Our TeachersSchoolThe school is housed <strong>in</strong> a typically <strong>English</strong>, beautiful Victorianbuild<strong>in</strong>g whose bright and spacious rooms are an idealenvironment for students from all over the world to get together for<strong>English</strong> language learn<strong>in</strong>g. The school has a very welcom<strong>in</strong>g andfriendly atmosphere and we do our best to make every student’sstay as successful and enjoyable as possible.ClassroomsThe school has 12 bright and airy classrooms all appropriatelyequipped for effective language teach<strong>in</strong>g.ReceptionOur reception is open from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and17.00pm. Our staff are very approachable and always available tohelp students with their enquiries regard<strong>in</strong>g tuition,accommodation, excursions or any other issues.CafeteriaThe school has a lovely cafeteria located <strong>in</strong> the school residence. Itis open from Monday to Friday for all students from 8.30am to13.30pm. We serve a variety of hot and cold lunches and dr<strong>in</strong>ks andsnacks <strong>in</strong> all breaks. It is a great opportunity to socialise with otherstudents and practice the <strong>English</strong> learned <strong>in</strong> lessons. There iscomfortable <strong>in</strong>door seat<strong>in</strong>g for colder days and also a beautifulgarden for the summer.ComputersOur computer room is equippedwith 12 computers all connected tobroadband <strong>in</strong>ternet. We offer freeuse of computers from 8.30am to5.00pm. The school also has freewireless <strong>in</strong>ternet throughout, whichstudents with their own laptopscan connect to.GardenThe school has a beautiful garden where students can socialisedur<strong>in</strong>g breaks and lunchtime. In the summer we also regularly useit to hold barbecues <strong>in</strong> for all students.ResidenceThe school has its own student residence, which is available allyear. Adult CoursesJanuary to December – ages 16+General <strong>English</strong>Our general <strong>English</strong> courses run all year round and students can start any Monday. Thelength of the course is up to the student. Students can study from a m<strong>in</strong>imum of twoweeks, up to a long-term course of three, six or even twelve months. We offer a choice of15 or 25 hours of General <strong>English</strong> per week. All lessons are 60 m<strong>in</strong>utes.LevelsAll students are given a level test on their first Monday and will be placed at theappropriate level. Most weeks we offer six levels <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g elementary, pre-<strong>in</strong>termediate,<strong>in</strong>termediate, upper-<strong>in</strong>termediate, advanced and advanced plus.Please note that we do not offer group classes for beg<strong>in</strong>ners. Beg<strong>in</strong>ners are required totake one-to-one lessons until they reach the right level to jo<strong>in</strong> our elementary group.SyllabusAll levels have an ongo<strong>in</strong>g eight-week syllabus with anatta<strong>in</strong>ment test at the end, after which students then move upa level, if they have passed the test.The 15-hour course offers grammar-based lessons l<strong>in</strong>ked to avariety of topics. Different skills are also <strong>in</strong>tegrated from thebeg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and throughout the lessons.to different social contexts. Classroom material and activitiesare often authentic and reflect real-life situations anddemands. Skills are <strong>in</strong>tegrated from the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g; a givenactivity might <strong>in</strong>volve read<strong>in</strong>g, speak<strong>in</strong>g, listen<strong>in</strong>g andperhaps also writ<strong>in</strong>g.Maximum Class SizeThe maximum class size is 14.The 25-hour course, <strong>in</strong> addition to what the15-hour course covers, also offers skills-based lessons <strong>in</strong> theafternoons. They give students the opportunity for furtherpractice <strong>in</strong> speak<strong>in</strong>g, read<strong>in</strong>g, listen<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g.MethodologyOur method of teach<strong>in</strong>g is the communicative approach. One-to-onecourses are tailor-made for you. Students get the closestpossible attention from their own personal tutor. Adult Exam PreparationCourses LondonChristmas Course16+ IELTS and Cambridge FCE & CAEIELTSIELTS (International <strong>English</strong> Language Test<strong>in</strong>g System) is ahighly practical and valid <strong>English</strong> language assessment,primarily used by those seek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational education orprofessional recognition. It is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly becom<strong>in</strong>g the mostwidely recognised <strong>in</strong>ternational measure of <strong>English</strong> ability foruniversity entrants.DatesWe offer three different start<strong>in</strong>gdates for a four-week IELTSpreparation course throughout theyear. Please see registration formfor more details.TuitionThe IELTS preparation course is acomb<strong>in</strong>ation of 10 hours IELTSpreparation and 15 hours general<strong>English</strong> per week.LevelStudents must be at least upper<strong>in</strong>termediatelevel (accord<strong>in</strong>g to our placement test) to jo<strong>in</strong> theIELTS preparation course.Exam<strong>in</strong>ationThe exam<strong>in</strong>ation can be taken as part of the course, but it is notcompulsory. The IELTS test can be booked through us and isavailable at a nearby test centre most Saturdays.Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses –FCE and CAECambridge examsSelect <strong>English</strong> London has been anexam centre for Cambridgeexam<strong>in</strong>ations s<strong>in</strong>ce the 1960s.Cambridge exams are the world’slead<strong>in</strong>g range of certificates forlearners of <strong>English</strong>. Each year, theyare taken by around 1.5 millionpeople, <strong>in</strong> 135 countries and arerecognised by thousands of educational organisations andemployers throughout the world.DatesWe offer exam preparation courses for the FCE and CAE exams<strong>in</strong> March, June and December. The exam preparation coursesstart up to 9 weeks prior to the exams. Residential AccommodationSelect <strong>English</strong> owns a large spacious Victorian house used as our schoolresidence. The residence is open all year round and can be booked from January toDecember <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with an <strong>English</strong> language course for a m<strong>in</strong>imum of twoweeks.LocationThe residence is conveniently located two doors from the ma<strong>in</strong> school build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>Crystal Palace. It takes students less than a m<strong>in</strong>ute to reach the school from theresidence.RoomsThe residence has 7 s<strong>in</strong>gle and 2 double rooms. All rooms have central heat<strong>in</strong>g.Showers and ToiletsMost rooms have en-suite showers. For the rooms without showers, communalshowers are located on each floor. There are also shared toilets on each floor.Internet and TVThe residence has wireless <strong>in</strong>ternet throughout. Students who br<strong>in</strong>g their ownlaptop can access the <strong>in</strong>ternet for free 24 hours a day. Homestay AccommodationWe can also arrange for students to stay <strong>in</strong> local homestay accommodation dur<strong>in</strong>gtheir studies. Stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> homestay accommodation can be an excellent way to get toknow the culture better as well as provid<strong>in</strong>g more opportunities to practice <strong>English</strong>.All our homestay accommodation is chosen and regularly visited by our own schoolstaff. Our Accommodation Officer is always available to deal with any problems thatmay occur <strong>in</strong> a quick and efficient manner. After arrival students can always speak toour Accommodation Officer regard<strong>in</strong>g any homestay issues.LocationThe location of our school <strong>in</strong> Crystal Palace, a residential part of London, is ideal forhomestay accommodation. We are <strong>in</strong> a unique position to offer homestayaccommodation with<strong>in</strong> walk<strong>in</strong>g distance of the school. Professional InternshipProgrammeThe professional <strong>in</strong>ternship programme is an unpaidwork placement <strong>in</strong> a UK company. This programme isideal for students and young professionals who want toimprove their <strong>English</strong> <strong>in</strong> a work<strong>in</strong>g environment and ga<strong>in</strong>practical knowledge of a certa<strong>in</strong> UK bus<strong>in</strong>ess sector. It ismost suitable for students who have studied or worked,or are plann<strong>in</strong>g on study<strong>in</strong>g/work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the requested areaof bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Please contact us for more <strong>in</strong>formationregard<strong>in</strong>g the application procedure.AgeCandidates should be between 18 and 32 years old. Oldercandidates will only be accepted <strong>in</strong> exceptional circumstances.Preced<strong>in</strong>g <strong>English</strong> Language CourseThe <strong>in</strong>ternship has to be preceded by at least a four-week <strong>English</strong>course at Select <strong>English</strong>. Non-EU candidates have to study at least thesame amount of weeks as their <strong>in</strong>ternship.Length of InternshipThe <strong>in</strong>ternship should be a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 4 weeks. There is no maximumlength.
