Underwater LightsTechnical InformationKey points -Borofloat glass offers outstanding clarity and canhandle extreme pressure and heat. The lens will notblacken or crack. The bronze exterior surfaces of the lamps maybe anti-fouled in a similar fashion to otherbronze underwater fittings. The bronze used for the housing component isaluminium bronze AB2.Lamps must be installed below the waterline.Installation instructions recommend idealinstallation depths for each lamp. The back surface of all lamps is completely sealedand will provide a watertight installation whenproperly installed. The lamp body must be secured and sealed with3M 5200 marine adhesive or an equivalent product. The bronze body of the lamp must be electricallybonded to the vessels grounding and cathodicprotection system. Failure to do so may causecorrosion by electrolysis.A clear anti-fouling may be applied to theglass lens. A soft brush is recommended forcleaning the glass lens to prevent scratching. The light pattern can range fromapproximately 3m to 30m / 10ft to 100ftdepending on the model used and waterclarity. The lamps may be operated when the vesselis out of the water, however it is recommendedthis operation occurs only for short periods oftime. The lamps may be left on when the boatis running at speed. The bulbs of HID and Halogen lamps may bereplaced from inside the vessel. LED lampsare completely sealed non-servicable units.Xenon Gas Discharge (HID) TechnologyHID underwater lights differ from traditional bulbversions in that, instead of light being created bypassing current through a filament to make it glow, light is created by an arc in a tube filled with a mixtureof xenon gas and metal salts. The light arc is shockproof as there is no filament to break.A 12V or 24V DC electronic ballast, housed remotelyor integrated into unit, is used to ignite the HID bulband provide constant levels of light output, even if thevessel’s voltage supply fluctuates by up to 10%.The advantages of using Xenon Gas Discharge(HID) underwater lights include:• Increased luminance results in a brighter andlarger illumination of underwater area.• Vibration resistant light arc instead of a fragilefilament.• Service life up to five times longer – reducedexpenditure for bulb replacement.• Constant brightness – independent offluctuations of up to 10% in the supply voltage.• Only 42W or 50W power consumption – lessstrain on a vessel's power supply.105
