7 tiny plays, 7 sketches written by young playwright Lasha 

Bugadze, and staged by young director Zurab Getsadze, are absolutely 

independent stories, based on 

our social problems. They look like piquant anecdotes, written in an absurd manner, but beyond the 

façade real problems are felt – contemporary tragedy, hidden hysteria and neurosis. Stories are funny 

but also scaring, because characters’ inner, hidden emotions, feelings are revealed, met text coming 

out. Performance tells the story of the society that recently has passed through terrible and strange war.

Tumanishvili Film Actors’ Studio Theatre is a very popular production company in Georgia and also 

is highly appreciated all over the word. 

It was founded in 1978 by one of the most brilliant and inventive theatre man Mikheil Tumanishvili. 

The Theatre maintains permanent troupe. It is repertory theatre and is subsidized by the State.

The characters of Gio Mgeladze’s play are neighbors and 

friends, but the relation between them is quite strange. 

Young girl Lizi is about to give birth to a child, but she has 

no idea of who is the father, because she has an affair with 

three men at the same time. Lizi’s neighbor Lova lives with 

two mistresses Ketato and Ketuta. This triangle has no future, 

as the girls decide to separate from their man. Another 

neighbor Prakaza has is own problems as well. 

At last, Lizi’s baby is born, but instead of a child we see a balloon full of water. 


Rustaveli National Theatre is 130 years old and inherited the professional drama theatre reestablished 

by Ilia Chavchavadze and Akaki Tsereteli. On September 1, 1879 first theatrical season was opened 

by a comedy of Barbare Jorjadze “What we were looking for and what we have found.” 

In 1921 theatre was named after Shota Rustaveli. The interesting history of the Rustaveli Theatre was 

created by famous directors: Kote Marjanishvili, Sandro Akhmeteli, Sh. Aghsabadze, D. Aleqsidze, 

M. Tumanishvili, A. Chkhartishvili, G. Zhordania, T. Chkheidze. Performances directed by Robert 

Sturua “Caucasian Chalk Circle” and “Richard III” brought fame and success to the theatre. 

Rustaveli theatre is famous with its triumphal tours in different countries: England, Germany, France, 

Italy, Swiss, Mexico, Australia, Finland and Island. Theatre has participated in different festivals in

In one strange Georgian village everybody can speak: humans and river, animals, birds and even 

subjects. Here people and nature can understand each other. Nikala and Tamta who live in this village 

fall in love with each other and they get married. Next day after wedding, when Russia hits Georgia, 

Nikala is going to the war to protect mother country and he is killed there. Tamta stays alone with two 

children. Some time after Tamta meets the Russian soldier who is living in their village and is citizen 

of Georgia after war. Tamta likes this Russian soldier, but she knows that he can be the killer of her 

husband. That’s why she does not know how to behave. Nikala gives advice to Tamta, he comes back 

from the other world to explain to his wife how perfect the life is and that everything in this world 

depends on love. 


“Liberty Theatre is a property of famous Georgian director Avtandil Varsimashvili. The second 

theatre after “Theatre Basement” that Mr. Varsimashvili opened in Tbilisi. The architectural form of 

the theatre is the ship - the representation of liberty. “Liberty Theatre” is one of the top Georgian 

theatres. It is the only Georgian theatre where the tickets are sold two-three weeks before the 

play.Theatre has 20 professional actors of different age. Theatre’s program includes 15 plays, which 

are delivered everyday, except Monday.

Marjanishvili State Drama theatre was founded by a great theatre director and reformer of 

the Georgian theatre Kote Marjanishvili, who, educated in Russia, played a crucial role in 

the development of Georgian theatrical life, and is generally credited with navigating a path for modern Georgian theatre. 

Using established Georgian theatrical traditions, Marjanishvili created a modern theatre in which antique, classical and 

modern drama were all equally at home. 

Tbilisi’s intellectual life from in twentieth was centered on the theatre. From the very beginning, the Marjanishvili theatre 

company was first rate: the legendary actors who created an entire epoch of Georgian theatre were acting here, the names 

of many well-known stage directors, designers ad composers are tightly linked with the Marjanishvili Theatre. 

Even though the soviet system denied Georgian artists to represent their theatrical mastery abroad, Marjanishvili Theatre 

still managed to attend different art and theatre festivals, where critic and public alike have always been enchanted by 

Georgians passionate and innovate approach to the theatre and to the life.After a three-year pause in 2003-2006 brought on 

by renovations, MARJANISHVILI THEATRE is set to return to its audience with new artistic director Levan Tsuladze - 

one of the acclaimed leader’s of new generation of theater in Georgia. 

Since 2006 the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre has produced more than 30 performances - classical and modern drama.

The play tells us the story about the eminent and at the same time with very manipulative-abilities of 

woman, whose name is Emilia Martis. She is a singer and the dream of every man, nonetheless 

Emilia’s choice of the perfect man is obscured, and nobody really knows her love story. At the very 

end of the play, the audience finds out that Emilia is 300 years old and really what she was looking 

for was the ‘life syrup,’ to further elongate the pleasure that she was gaining from the life. Emilia 

dramatically changes the fate of six men, she is able to alter their thinking of life rigorously and finally 

helps them thoroughly acknowledge their personas. 

About Theatre: 

It has been only five years as the theatre “ATONELZE” exists. The theater was founded by Revaz 

Salukvadze. He decided to add another tiny theatre to the theatrical world of Tbilisi. Step by step the 

empty, distorted building was transforming into the theatre. In the autumn of 2004, the transformation 

came to an end, the theatre “ATONELZE” was ready to welcome its guests. Since than it shows quite 

interesting performances and has its place amongst professionals and audience.

Performance “Tale of the Cat” - written by the famous Czech writer, dramatist, journalist and 

interpreter Karel Chapek (director M. Antadze). Like other Chapek’s writings, didactic and educative 

character is typical for this play and it’s supposed to be interesting for all children of different ages. 

“Tale of the Cat” is distinguished by pleasant humor, fantasy and light style of representing. Here are 

many allegories like in bible fables. It’s filled by human kindness and warmth. We hope the audience 

entitles the performance as “glory to kindness” - this is what we were thinking of. 


Nodar Dumbadze Tbilisi State Central Theatre, the heir of the second children theatre in the world, is 

83 years old. The Theatres has three halls: large, small and experimental. 

The plays are divided into two categories: the first one for children 3-12 and the second for teenagers 

aged 13-18. This time in the Theatre is 15 children and 7 teenager performances. The work goes on 

for 7 new performances. 

From 2007 The Theatre began restore the traditional season ticket interrelation with schools. 

Nowadays 170 schools collaborate with our Theatre.

On 6 th of December 2009 the Experimental Hall of the 

Rustaveli Theatre hosted a premier of the Verbatim Show 

directed by Alecky Blythe, a young director from UK. 

Verbatim Show is a part of a Partnership Project between 

The Rustaveli Theatre and the UK’s famous National 

Theatre. The partnership has been facilitated by the 

British Council and supported by BP and HSBC Bank 

Georgia.Alecky Blythe chose for her show Georgians 

who had to flee from their homes as a result of the 

Russia-Georgia war in August 2008. She visited IDP 

camps in Gori and Tserovani to record people’s talk. As a 

result she created an impressive story about their hopes and troubles.

The protagonist, a famous middle-aged behavioral researcher 

professor Kürmann is given a chance to modify his 

biography, but the alterations he makes are only minimal and 

he, and his fate, remain essentially the same. 

Herr Kürmann, experiments with different episodes in his life 

to see if they could have been played differently. The catalyst for the action is the breakdown of a 

marriage. 

It features three principal players: Hannes Kürmann, Antoinette, and a figure called the “Registrator” 

(in our version acting from TV on stage), an epic presence or director-on-stage. 


Founded in 1987 by famous Georgian actor Kote Makharadze. Theatre located in the house memorial 

of V.Andjaparidze & M.Chiaureli. Main productions were mono plays performed by Kote 

Makharadze and Sofiko Chiaureli - the famous Georgian film and theater actress. Some productions

School… the final class… awkward age… and the problems related to this age… Our heroes, with 

plenty of such problems, are the pupils of the 12th class, full of happiness, friendship and love. One of 

them, Sandro Machabeli, is in love with Tea Tabagari, who is the victim of family violence. Sandro 

injures Tea’s father while trying to protect her from him and becomes arrested by the police. The knife 

found at the accident place makes his situation even worse, however the support from his friends and 

teachers helps Sandro to overcome this peril. 


Tskhinvali State Drama Theatre after Ivane Machabeli was founded in 1876 , on the behalf of the 

“stage lovers” society . The first performances were staged with the initiative of famous public figures 

– Ivane and Zaal Machabeli - great Georgian translators, philologists and active society persons. 

In 1929 the theatre has been awarded the state status by Soviet Georgian government. 

In 1991, because of the well-known events in Tskhinvali, the theatre was forced to leave the native 

place and seek shelter in Tbilisi. At present it is acting in the Building of National Music Centre.

Kutaisi state drama theatre is 150 years old. The first performance was held on march 3, 1861 by the 

volunteers. The first professional troupe in Kutaisi was held by Kote Meskhi in 1885. The second 

professional troupe was held in Kutaisi by Kote Marjanishvili in 1928. The theatre was conferred by 

the name of greatest Georgian artist and director Lado Meskhishvili in 1940. The Lado Meskhishvili 

state drama theatre building was officially opened in 1955, it got status monument of the Georgian 

architect in 2009.

(Three Novels on War and Love) 

The first novel refers to the tragicomic life of a young Georgian 

emigrant in Russia, who lives there without any ID documents and 

becomes almost mad because of his relations with some eccentric 

person. The second novel describes the history of a young Georgian guy 

who suffered from August’s war. At one of the International Airports of 

Europe the foreign female customs officer finds in his suitcase a 

souvenir dagger and wants to take it from him but the young fellow 

starts retelling her with his bad English the story of August’s war in such 

an emotional manner that he even manages “to involve” the customs 

officer in the imaginary war. 

The third novel reflects the family scenes taken place on the roof of a high building, where a depressed 

man having lost a leg and an arm due to August’s war tries to commit a suicide. Soon a fireman and 

other members of the family appear on the roof to help him. Crawling on the roof they tell the man 

their stories and try to assure him that they are the ones who really need to kill themselves.

people attempted to resist to perfidious plan of Russian empire. 

Intrigues, rivalries, treasons to each other, ambitions and “wise” 

policy of external forces demolished the country, but even in such 

situations appear persons for which the native country is much 

more important, than his(her) personality. 

The last queen of Georgia Mariam was such a strong person, she 

gave the proper answer to the assailant enemy and resuscitated the lost dignity to the nation! 


In 1967 the group of young actors of Marjanishvili theatre under the leadership of chief director Giga 

Lortqipanidze decided to establish the theatre in Rustavi; In the same year, on the 30-th of 

November under the leadership of Giga Lortqipanidze the theatre was opened with romantic drama 

“Cyrano de Bergerac”. 

After that the theatre was managed by A.Kutateladze, T.Mesxi, G.Kavtaradze. During the whole 

history of Rustavi theatre performances were directed by L.Ioseliani, M.Kuchuxidze, M.Bukia, 

L.Tsuladze, Endre Marton , A.Enuqidze and others. 

In 2004 Rustavi theatre was established under the status of Municipal theatre. 

Since 2009 the Artistic Director of the theatre is Gocha Kapanadze.

The play ,,The Hot August” describes the events, 

which took place in Georgia in August of 2008.The 

action takes place in one of the villages from conflict zone. The play is based on real facts, 

which are depicted in a highly realistic manner. This is a tragedy of the people, who are 

obliged to leave their native land, their houses, the graves of their ancestors, but they don’t 

lose the hope that some day they will return by all means not only to their land, but to the 

environment and to people, that staid over the barrier. 


The history of Gori Theatre begins in 1865, though Professor S. Khutsishvili on the basis of Mari 

Brosse’s archives states that the date of the foundation of the theatre is 1845. The 

performances by than were shown in the building of Rotunda in the town park. 

The present-day building of the theatre was built in 1939, but started functioning in 1940. 

In 1947 the Gori State Drama Theatre was named after the famous Georgian playwright of 

the 19th century, one of the founder’s of the Georgian theatre - Giorgi Eristavi. Many 

generations of Georgian artists were brought up on the stage of Gori Theatre. Nowadays a new 

generation of artist work here and are continuing rich traditions of their ancestors.

Peasant Iokhio worked on the field, he found the wounded crane 

once. Iokhio treated the crane and let it go. The crane could transform as a woman. The crane 

came back to Iokhios’s house and marry him as a token of gratitude. The crane knitted the cloth 

and Iokhio sold that as an expensive thing in the market. 

Sodo and Undzu- cloth sellers, found out about it and agreed Iokhio, that his wife would knit the 

cloth again. Iokhio compelled his wife to do this mission. The wife- Tsini gave him consent to knit 

cloth on condition, that nobody would look into the room at the time of knitting. But Iokhio 

abolished the condition. Tsini lost strength of being the woman and turned into the crane is 

compelled to separate from her wife. Their separation is very sorrowful. Because of that their love 

destroyed. 


Nodar Dumbadze Tbilisi State Central Theatre, the heir of the second children theatre in the world, has 

been turned 83. The Theatres has three halls: large, small and experimental. 

The plays are divided into two categories: the first one for children 3-12 and the second for teenagers 

aged 13-18. This time in the Theatre is 15 children and 7 teenager performances. The work goes on 

7 new performances. 

From 2007 The Theatre restored the traditional season ticket interrelation with schools. Nowadays 

170 schools collaborate with our Theatre.

Well-known Georgian actor and director Gogi Kavtaradze presents Henrik Ibsen’s well-known play, An Enemy 

of the people depicting corruption and hypocrisy, Truth and falsehood in Norwegian dramatist’s typical way, 

moving from realistic contemporary life to symbolic drama. In Georgian director’s production place and time of 

the action is not concrete, characters have no nationality. Actualizing the state of things, director decided to 

stress that this can happen anywhere and anytime, which deepens effect on audience. It is no doubt, to the 

richness and complexity beyond the trappings of naturalism, that Ibsen’s plays in the main owe their lasting 

place in the theatre. 


Tumanishvili Film Actors’ Studio Theatre is a very popular production company in Georgia and also

The theatre was established in 1868, when the first performance of stage amateurs’ was performed in 

Ozurgeti. In 90 years the leaders of the stage amateurs’ were Alexandre Tsutsunava and V. Urushadze. 

In 1914, under the guidance of G.Gogitidze there was built theater building in Ozurgeti, which was 

opened on 1 st June. In various years there had been working well-known actors, directors, painters, 

choir-masters... 

In 1968 the theatre was annexed the name of Alexandre Tsutsunava. 

In 2005 the theatre was acclaimed as the Best Regional Theatre by Ministry of Culture and Theatre 

Actors’ Union.

Virgin Mary is sitting at feet of undeservedly crucified 

Christ, due to verdict of dull crowd and confirmation of 

Roman conquerors, and recollects the worldly life of 

personified Lord. Birth... cruelest verdict of King Herod – 

all infants, younger than two years old, to be killed. The 

mother saved son from an ordeal, by a miracle. Then 

Christ came back ‘home’ – to Jerusalem great temple and 

drove out the Pharisees, depraved and avid for gold 

people. Christ learned the mankind to forgive the casual 

sins, when he saved sinful Mary Magdalene from throw 

stones. He shielded her and said: ‘who sinless throw 

stone first.’ ...but a traitor never sleeps. Judah betrayed Lord for thirty silver coins, and Judge Pilate 

had ‘avoided responsibility’ letting people to make verdict over preceptor – ‘to crucify!’ Christ had 

taken sins of mankind himself and was crucified. After a while, Jews see the God committed miracle 

– resurrected Christ ascending to heavens. 


In 1963 the students of State University of Theatre and Cinema of Georgia have established the 

wordless-show group. The leader of group was student Amiran Shalikashvili – a future founder, 

manager and producer of first Dumb-Show State Theatre of Georgia. 2009 for Wordless-Show State 

Theatre of Georgia is the year of jubilee. This clever, original staff with own style turned 45. The way 

of theatre is the way of finding of own theme and expression means that does not mean that theatre has 

ignored the classic heritage of this genre. Quite the reverse, the theatre has shared values of world 

wordless-show art. This approach defines the future repertoire of the theatre.

Struggle between Perfidy and Love was and will be… The means just have 

changed. We tried to express and represent in the performance today’s face 

of this struggle. Besides the author’s text, there are used the best samples of 

Friedrich Schiller poetry in the performance, which are appropriate to this 

play and this fight between Perfidy and Love, provides new aspects and 

nuances. 


The Theatre after Sandro Akhmeteli was founded in 1981 by Stage Director Leri Paksashvili. On 1988 

the theatre was conferred the name of the well-known director Sandro Akhmeteli. 

In different years distinguished representatives of Georgian Art managed the Theatre and performed 

creative activities on stage . 

Performances staged by them repeatedly were recognized and awarded by different prizes (State, 

Marjanishvili and Akhmeteli prizes)

The play is based on the play by a modern Georgian dramatist, Lali Roseba. The plot develops in a 

theatrical family of little provincial town in Georgia. That is the place where a little orphan girl, 

Kato arrives. She dreams to become an actress, but the events, developing in family of her aunt and 

uncle turns the romantic girl back in a harsh reality. However, her love towards the theatre is strong 

and makes her go to another city with her uncle to set up a new theatre. 


Sukhumi Konstantine Gamsakhurdia Drama Theatre is 125 years old. It has a rich history and creative 

traditions. In 90s of 20 th century, after the so called Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, the theatre had to 

flee to Tbilisi for a shelter. The plays were performed on different stages of several theatres in Tbilisi 

and regionally for several years. At present, the theater is located in Marjanishvili Theatre and takes

,,Naked theatre” is an art-studio founded by Nana Kvaskhvadze in 2006 on the basis of a group of 

young actors (graduates of Tbilisi State University of Theatre and Film). All the actors are aged under 

25. Together with their playwright, scenographist, bandmaster and choreographer they create the 

work, which is partly experimental and full of elements of ,,happening”; in postmodern style, close to 

the postulates of Peter Brook and Eji Grotovski. And also the repertoire is enriched with the plays of 

classicist authors. 

Since their existence, they’ve played not only in Tbilisi, but also performed very first shows in many 

regions of Georgia (,, There it was … but what?!” – after W. Shakespeare’s ,,Romeo and Juliet”, 

,,They bang the door” – by M. Fermo, ,,The arms were summoned here before” – after L. Asatiani, 

Merab Gegias - ,,The victim” etc…) 


Their latest show – “ The wisdom of a lie” is created after a well-known Georgian fable, written by a 

classicist author - Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani. The show is performed by six actors, who bring a synthesis 

of declamation, singing, movement on stage, without any extra props or decoration and with the help 

of “masks”. So it can be easily performed anywhere in the free space. “The wisdom of lie” is a 

combination of Satire and Philosophy. Since their existence, they've played not only in Tbilisi, but 

also performed very first shows in many regions of Georgia .

Incidentally, the Chechen Jokola meets Georgian Zviadauri and invites him to spend a night at his 

place. Jokola has no idea, that the guest he has invited was the enemy of Chechens and the murderer of 

his brother. Preacher announces the demand of ghosts to revenge and to sacrifice Zviadauri to his 

brother, Darla’s soul. Jokola finds out that Zviadauri is the enemy, but he can not betray the custom of 

hospitality and tries to defend him from Chechens. 

Delighted by the courage of Zviadauri Aghaza – Jokola’s wife – morns after his death and deserves 

the anger of ghosts. The brutal custom of sacrifice ruins the life of not only Zviadauri, but Jokola and 

Aghaza die too.

Inside everyone there is a Hamlet. They just need a stage...After a 

performance of Hamlet, a woman cleaner finds herself playing the 

actor’s definitive role, as a company of puppets come to life around her. 

Linda Marlowe collaborates with Georgian director Beso Kupreishvili 

and puppeteers from his Fingers Theatre, Tbilisi, in a performance of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy 

as you’ve never seen it before. With her extensive screen and stage career including the West End and 

the RSC, a 25 year partnership with Steven Berkoff and a history of Edinburgh hits, People’s Choice 

Award winner Linda has been specially invited to perform at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms, as it 

celebrates its 30th anniversary of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 


Following to successful completion of several sketches by director Beso Kupreishvili in Batumi 

during 1988 in Children's Art Studio “Mtiebi” the idea of founding the Finger Theatre was established. 

On June 7, 1991 in "Actor's House" adult theatre-studio "99+2" was presented with performance 

"Extravaganza". The performance was presented with new, unique way and established closer contact 

with the audience by means of costumed fingers, which had an impressive influence on the spectators 

with its creativity. That is the reason theatre-studio was called as "Finger Theatre" and despite its 

varying and wide range of performances it carries the same name up till now and the performance 

"Extravaganza" became its "visit card". "Finger Theatre" has become prominent as soon as it was 

established and occupied its own place in Georgian Theatrical space. 

February 6, 2006 - the official presentation of "Fingers Theatre" took place in Tbilisi. 

Since 2007 till present the performances and the rehearsals of "FINGERS THEATRE" takes place in 

"MARJANISHVILI STATE DRAMA THEATRE".

Saboli is the true story, on which Ioseb Bardanashvili 

wrote great music. 

In Jewish Ghetto German officer falls in love with Jewish 

actor woman Hanna. For this woman officer allows Jewish people to open the theater inside the 

Ghetto. 

Theater is opened and is physically saves a lot of Jewish people in Ghetto. 

German officer requests from Hanna full obedience, but Hanna hates him and she escapes from the 

Ghetto with partisans. Officer gives order to destroy Ghetto. 


Russian theatre was opened in Tbilisi in 1845 year. In 1932 in was entitled as Russian State Drama 

Theater and opened its first season with Gorki’s “At the Bottom”. Soon after, in 1934 the theatre was 

named after Alexander Griboedov. 

In this theater following famous directors were performing: A. Ridal, A. Rubin, V. Karpov, A. 

Smeianov, A. Avgustin. In 5 th of March, 1939 y. G. Tovstonogov made his performance for the 

Diploma in the theater– “Children of Valiushin”.Great role was played in the theater by some famous 

persons, like V. Meyerchold, K. Marjanishvili, A. Popov, K. Sach-Azizov, A. Takaishvili, D.

The performance is created through post modern allusions and 

transforms into allegorical parable in spite of the fact that it takes place in one family’s living-dining 

room kitchen. Here comic allegories are read as political symbols. 

Eccentric comedy with a hint of grotesque is played out in the kitchen illustrating Georgia’s recent 

history and the tragic war events of August 2008. History of a family and the story played out is being 

generalized and transformed into a State affair. 


Batumi Theatre is more than 130 years old, although it originated much earlier than that. There was a 

Roman theatre in Fifth Century in Gonio-Afsaro near Batumi. From 1879, when Adjara was returned 

to Georgia as a result of the war between Russia and Turkey, performances started to be staged by the 

stage lovers in Batumi. Simultaneously renowned Georgian directors and actors started to work in 

Batumi. 

In 2005 Robert Sturua who is a creative consultant to the theatre up to this day was invited as a 

creative director. 

In 2006 Sturua was succeeded on the position of theatre’s creative director by his student director 

Giorgi Tavadze. 

In 2007 famous film director Zaza Khalvashi was appointed director of the theatre.

from different viewpoints. The play is based on year’s long correspondence between two queens, 

where it is hardly possible to identify who is the true captive.

a space for free experiments. 

In 2008-2010 Royal District Theatre hosted 2 editions of festival of 25-minute plays, ARDI-fest, a 

competition with 31 small productions. The goal of the festival is to discover new/unestablished 

names in Georgian theatre, directors, and actors, playwrights, set designers etc. and thus encourage 

their work. 

Since 2008 a group of young theatre practitioners started working at the theatre. The group mainly 

consists of Drama School students. 

The theatre has hosted number of international projects including readings, co-productions, guestperformances 

and workshops/seminars through years, as well as it has mainly been oriented on 

contemporary drama in its repertoire.

scientific congress because of his ugly face. 

Mayenburg’s absurdly grotesque play tells a story of an ugly man 

who turns into a legendary beauty after the plastic surgery. But what 

is the price of this transformation? He looses uniqueness, his face is 

numerously copied throughout the country and his attractive 

appearance becomes an unbearable burden.

The Battle of Stalingrad (August 23, 1942 – 

February 2, 1943) was one of the most 

atrocious battles in the history of mankind. The 

battle is recognized by historians as a turning 

point of World War II – an unimaginable 

slaughter in which more than a million human 

lives were lost. The battle itself is just a 

context, a frame within which the audience follows several fates parallelly, including generals of the 

army, horses and ants whose lives are affected and determined by war. Gabriadze portrays his 

characters as tragic and comic and absurd, regardless of the warring side they belong to. Their stories 

are presented as mutually interwoven poetic fragments, in the literary and visual form of a collage. 

The author uses different kinds of puppets - marionettes, gignoles, shadow puppets of various sizes 

and materials. On his small puppet stage - box, he is able to produce spectacular effects using very 

simple means. 


In 1981 Rezo Gabriadze founded Marionette Theatre in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. It is not a theatre 

for children, and the puppets do not speak with childish voices. These stories are real and surreal, 

credible and fabulous. It is a theater of one author – Rezo Gabriadze – who writes scripts and makes 

marionettes. The performances staged here were: ”Alfred and Violetta”, “Marshal de Fantier’s 

Diamond”, “Daughter of The Trabizond Emperor”, “The Autumn of my Springtime”, “The Battle of 

Stalingrad”. All these performances have thrilled the spectators in all around the world: UK, France, 

Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, , Italy, Spain, Mexico, Norway, Holland, Canada, USA at 

the Kennedy Centre in Washington, the Lincoln Center in New-York, at Spoletto Festival in 

Charleston , Edinburgh Festival in the UK etc.

Vaso Abashidze’s Music and Drama State Theatre was founded in 1926. Its creative 

development was hampered by the political and economic shifts in post- USSR Georgia 

and a fire that destroyed most of the building . After assuming management of the 

theatre in 2005, the gifted young David Doiashvili built up an entirely new repertoire 

and revived the theatre.
