When the firstfilter Boozer started operation <strong>in</strong> 1995 this was the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of a str<strong>in</strong>g of success. Page 10 of 16FrameTrak – New Cloth Fix<strong>in</strong>g Methods for Drum, Disc & Pan FiltersFrameTrak is a new method of attach<strong>in</strong>g filter media to disc, drum and pan filters designed and developedby Madison Filter and <strong>BOKELA</strong>. It replaces the old-fashioned, burdensome caulk<strong>in</strong>g method or the moremodern bolt down clamp<strong>in</strong>g methods on drum and pan filters as well as the bag method for disc filters. Itsma<strong>in</strong> function is to elim<strong>in</strong>ate the numerous Operational Health & Safety issues associated with the exist<strong>in</strong>gmethods of re-cloth<strong>in</strong>g filters. Filter cloth can be secured to a filter without the use of power tools.FrameTrak consists of three parts: 1. A special designed steel profile. 2. An extruded elastomer polymerprofile with cloth <strong>in</strong>serts. 3. A second extruded elastomer polymer profile, which acts as a lock<strong>in</strong>g strip. Themajor advantage for drum filters is the cloth exchange time can be remarkably shortened and only thosefilter cells which need a cloth change can be re-clothed. The same reason<strong>in</strong>g can be applied to pan filters.The ma<strong>in</strong> advantage for disc filters is the cloth can be exchanged without remov<strong>in</strong>g segments. Page 11 of 16Hi-Bar Steam Pressure <strong>Filtration</strong> –Breakthrough <strong>Technology</strong> for Dry Bauxite ResidueFuture methods of bauxite residue treatment must be capable not only to improve the red mud handl<strong>in</strong>g butto provide material with very new product characteristics and, thus, to allow at least a simple and risk-freetransport storage and reclamation of disposal sites or even an <strong>in</strong>dustrial re-usage of dry bauxite residue.The target is clearly def<strong>in</strong>ed:• achiev<strong>in</strong>g a dry residue material <strong>in</strong> an economic way• mak<strong>in</strong>g re-usage feasible <strong>in</strong>stead of disposal• m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g the loss of valuable soda.Our <strong>in</strong>novative Hi-Bar Steam Pressure <strong>Filtration</strong> is a patented process successfully applied <strong>in</strong> various<strong>in</strong>dustries that shows the way for future bauxite residue treatment.This cont<strong>in</strong>uous Hi-Bar <strong>Filtration</strong> can be realised as pressure filtration process with compressed air or assteam pressure filtration. The plant design is based on rotary drum or disc filters which are <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong>side apressure vessel that is filled with compressed air. Over-pressure of up to 6 bar is applied for filtration andcake dewater<strong>in</strong>g. For the patented Hi-Bar Steam Pressure <strong>Filtration</strong> superheated, pure steam is applied forfilter cake treatment. For this process a specially designed steam cab<strong>in</strong> covers a part of the filter area andforms a separate room with superheated steam.Thus, filtration, wash<strong>in</strong>g and dewater<strong>in</strong>g of bauxite residue is performed <strong>in</strong> a new quality and leads to• a really dry bauxite residue with an extremely low moisture content of 22– 25 %• an excellently washed and clean material with very low soda content• a bulk-like, sandy and easy to handle material which can be safely transported over long distancesand processed like a bulk material.This breakthrough technology <strong>in</strong> red mud filtration leads to product characteristics never achieved before <strong>in</strong>one process step. Page 12 of 16<strong>Filtration</strong> of Bauxite Ore after Pipel<strong>in</strong>e Transport – a World PremiereThe cont<strong>in</strong>uous pressure filtration is the chosen technology for the dewater<strong>in</strong>g of the worldwide first pipel<strong>in</strong>etransported bauxite at an Alum<strong>in</strong>a ref<strong>in</strong>ery of Alunorte (Alum<strong>in</strong>a do Norte do Brasil S/A) <strong>in</strong> Brazil.When Vale was design<strong>in</strong>g the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and beneficiation of the Paragom<strong>in</strong>as m<strong>in</strong>e it was to decide by whichmeans the bauxite should be supplied to the Alum<strong>in</strong>a ref<strong>in</strong>ery. Beside ship or railroad transport the mostpreferred option was pipel<strong>in</strong>e transport of the bauxite. Pipel<strong>in</strong>e transport of bulk materials such as kaol<strong>in</strong> oriron ore is not only a proved but also a more economical and environmental method than ship or railroadtransport. Cost for pipel<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is lower than ship or railroad transport. At the ref<strong>in</strong>ery, however, the pumpedslurry has to be dewatered and it is a decisive condition for realiz<strong>in</strong>g pipel<strong>in</strong>e pump<strong>in</strong>g of bauxite to have afeasible filtration technology available which is capable to dewater the arriv<strong>in</strong>g slurry to a low residualmoisture content <strong>in</strong> an economical way. This <strong>in</strong>tensive dewater<strong>in</strong>g step has to guarantee a very lowmoisture content below a critical moisture of 14 % due to the follow<strong>in</strong>g reasons:• the amount of water enter<strong>in</strong>g the ref<strong>in</strong>ery process has to be below a critical po<strong>in</strong>t• above a certa<strong>in</strong> moisture content the bauxite filter cake becomes sticky and has poor transportationand process<strong>in</strong>g characteristics (very similar to bauxite residue)• different sorts of bauxite have to be blended which requires a dry and mixable filter cake• the portion of f<strong>in</strong>es can vary due to chang<strong>in</strong>g quarriesAnalogous to the bauxite residue (red mud) the f<strong>in</strong>e milled bauxite is difficult to dewater. After extensiveanalysis by Alunorte, <strong>BOKELA</strong> and other expertised groups the cont<strong>in</strong>uous pressure filtration was preferredaga<strong>in</strong>st filter presses s<strong>in</strong>ce these filters achieve better moisture content and require less <strong>in</strong>vest andoperation cost. <strong>BOKELA</strong> designed a process flow sheet which ensured that the cont<strong>in</strong>uous pressure filtersachieve the required moisture content of below 14 % which can be improved by application of the <strong>BOKELA</strong>Steam Pressure <strong>Filtration</strong> to even mc = 10 - 12 %. The first five pressure disc filters of 168 m² each werecommissioned <strong>in</strong> May 2007 already prepared to be equipped for Stream Pressure <strong>Filtration</strong>. Theeng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and supply of these filters was managed by a consortium of Andritz AG, Graz (Austria) and<strong>BOKELA</strong> based on a comprehensive feasibility study done by <strong>BOKELA</strong>. Meanwhile 13 pressure disc filtersof 168 m² each are <strong>in</strong> operation.<strong>BOKELA</strong> Backflush FilterThe <strong>BOKELA</strong> Backflush Filter is of advanced hydraulic design which is the basis for pregnant liquorpurification with improved performance and improved operation. The <strong>BOKELA</strong> Backflush Filter comprisesma<strong>in</strong>ly a vessel, filter elements arranged <strong>in</strong> a star-shape, a top reservoir, pneumatic valves with fastopen<strong>in</strong>g/clos<strong>in</strong>g characteristics and a new developed auto-control system with excellent mechanicalelectrical<strong>in</strong>tegration. Vertical filter elements <strong>in</strong>side the vessel are connected to external manifold viasyphons each equipped with an isolat<strong>in</strong>g valve and sampl<strong>in</strong>g valve, by which filtrate quality can bemonitored. In case of turbidity the relevant isolat<strong>in</strong>g valve can be closed, so that filtrate quality can beguaranteed. The filter runs <strong>in</strong> completely closed operation to prevent exposure to air what m<strong>in</strong>imises crustformation over the bags and provides for long lifetime of filter bags. Fully automatic operation makeshandl<strong>in</strong>g easy.The ma<strong>in</strong> important improvements <strong>in</strong> design and operation of the <strong>BOKELA</strong> Backflush Filter are• comprehensive PC-PLC control, excellent mechanical-electrical <strong>in</strong>tegration and user-friendly manmach<strong>in</strong>e<strong>in</strong>terface result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a stable optimized process sequence with the consequence ofsuperior pregnant liquor throughput• strong filter elements of double-layered sta<strong>in</strong>less metal with firm mechanical properties• special reliable pneumatic valves with f<strong>in</strong>e dynamic characteristics (e.g. half-ball valve for sludgedischarge with fast open<strong>in</strong>g/clos<strong>in</strong>g characteristics)<strong>BOKELA</strong>Leadership <strong>in</strong> <strong>Filtration</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>


Page 13 of 16• improved cake discharge by uniform backwash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all filter elements• <strong>in</strong>dividual cone angle of depend<strong>in</strong>g on product <strong>in</strong>stead of fixed cone angle.The filter elements are of strong design and made of double-layered sta<strong>in</strong>less metal provid<strong>in</strong>g firmmechanical properties. Reduction of the open flow area dur<strong>in</strong>g operation is m<strong>in</strong>imized which is aprecondition for high capacity. The flow patterns <strong>in</strong>side the filter element prevent that solids hav<strong>in</strong>g passedthe filter cloth at the beg<strong>in</strong> of the filtration cycle dur<strong>in</strong>g turbid filtrate recycl<strong>in</strong>g can deposit at the bottom ofthe filter element. Deposits of solids at the bottom of the filter elements often lead to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g weight of thefilter elements and cloth destruction.
