She’s known by many different names, depending on who the person is andwhen he, she or they, knew her. Some refer to her as Fred. These people, like John Martin, Victor Ng and IanCraighead to name a few, would morelikely have known her during the good olddays of the Malaysian Advertising Industry.Others, all of whom have left us to goto the big theatre in the sky, the likes ofKrishen Jit, Leslie Dawson, Syed Alwi,Bosco D’Cruz, Lloyd Fernando, MustafaNor and many others, affectionatelyreferred to her as Fari — as do so manyother theatre practitioners still with us, likeMarion D’ Cruz, Fatima Abu Bakar, AnnLee, Sukania, Shantini Venugopal et al.Her siblings and relatives call her Faridah,as do I, and most other people. There are those who call her by her title,Dato’, but as many will tell you she prefersto drop the title amongst friends andcolleagues. There are some who call her ‘aunty’, whichshe hates. Her son, Feroz, calls her ‘meh’,which she loves. She refers to herself asFM when signing off on her emails. The press often refer to her as ‘the firstlady of Malaysian theatre’.Yue May refers to her as ‘boss’.Jit Murad calls her ‘mum’... and if Trafficand Miss Piggy (our two cats) could talk, they’d more than likely call her ‘the bestestcat mummy in the whole wide world’.But no matter what you call her, there’s nodenying who and what she is …Simply put, Fred aka Fari aka Faridahaka Dato’ aka Aunty aka ‘meh’ aka FMaka ‘the first lady of Malaysian theatre’aka ‘boss’ aka ‘mum’ aka ‘the bestest catmummy in the whole wide world’ … is allof the above and more.Joe Hasham is the Artistic Directorand Co-Founder of The Actors StudioMalaysia, The Kuala Lumpur PerformingArts Centre and The Performing ArtsCentre of Penang.Living Arts MalaysiaEditor & Art DirectorNicholas ChinAdvisorsDato’ Faridah MericanJoe Hasham oamPrintDI Print Solutionswww.diprintsolutions.comAll feedback/comments about thispublication and/or the performingarts in general are welcomed at:nicholas@theactorsstudio.com.myThe Actors Studio@Lot 10Roof Top, Level 8A, Lot 10 ShoppingCentre, 50, Jalan Sultan Ismail50250 Kuala LumpurTel: (03) 2144 2009 (General Inquiry)(03) 2142 2009 (Box Office)(03) 2143 2009 (Box Office)www.theactorsstudio.com.myThe Kuala Lumpur PerformingArts Centre (klpac)Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan51100 Kuala LumpurTel: (03) 4047 9000 (Box Office)www.klpac.org3

Two months ago, I was driving on thecoastal side of Penang, slow enough for meto read all the store names on a street I wasunfamiliar with, one stood out, a restaurantnamed “No Eye Deer”. Cute, but more thancute. Memorable. Distinctive. And clever. Itstuck with me, obviously, as no other store'sname did. Had “No Eye Deer” been namedH&T Restaurant, would I have taken note?Love 'em or loathe 'em, puns are here tostay and have been around since ancienttimes. But do they deserve the disdain thathas been piled upon them by their hatersdown through the ages? Bad puns areeverywhere, but I think of them as cheap orconvenient, rather than bad. For example, atasteless newspaper headline about a camerashop that had burned down – “Out of Film”.On the other hand, quality puns at least arenot the lowest form of humor, but amongthe highest, involving imagination, creativityand wit. The inspired punster’s mind cyclesthrough homophones or semantical twinsin search of a jibe like the way rapperslust for in rhymes or babies experimentinglanguage with babbles. Therefore, the leastunbearable puns are those that avoid thepun’s essential immaturity.Knowing I was writing this article, with theintention of encouraging punning and topromote a play about puns – CorporalPUNishtment (which I am directing), a friendasked me, "Doesn't punning have to comenaturally? Can you actually teach people topun?" Yes, I said, by reading puns, analyzinggood and bad ones, having people keep onthe lookout for them, and encouraging themto pun themselves. Puns are a wonderfulaspect of language to promote, on onecondition, if you are learning to pun; you muststrive to pun with class.A brief definition, so that our minds aresynchronized in one track: A pun is thedeliberate confusion of similar words, phrases or sounds for humorous — andsometimes serious — effect.Sometimes a pun is on a different senseof the same word, as when in Romeo andJuliet the dying Mercutio (who can't resist apun even in his last moments) says, "Lookfor me tomorrow and you will find me agrave man."Sometimes the play is on the twist of anexpected word, or part of one, such as “doyou know that the economy is so bad thatsome hospitals had to cut coroners?”In those examples we see some of thecrucial elements in pun-making — a richvocabulary, including a familiarity withproverbs, expressions, clichés and otherlanguage elements that can be distortedto make a pun; and a reading backgroundranging from nursery rhymes, fairy talesand mythology to classic novels, plays andpoetry. The more literate one is, the greaterthe opportunity to pun.Puns maybe the lowest form of wit (andtherefore the foundation of all wit, :D) andonly if you didn’t think of it first.Freddy Tan is Production Manager atklpac and also the director of CorporalPUNishment. He challenges you to catchall 117 puns in his play. Please see listingson page 12 for details.Kimmy Kiew is a Director-in-Residence at klpac. She talks about theinspirations behind her upcoming playFlower & Sword, and its relevanceto the current sociopolitical climate inMalaysia. The Hierarchy of NeedIt’s not typical of this magazine to discussrecent headlines but the restructuring atthe Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestrastruck a little close to home.A comment that’s come up is why arewe, the Malaysian taxpayer, helping tofund something that benefits a small andselect group of people?I did not immediately have a good answerfor this one, although behind the questionwas a larger point, one that looms largeover discussions on art in general. Why should we pay for it at all? Whyshould we, the general public, fund art?Isn’t it for the rich, the elite, the artistic? I’dargue that this is an issue of perception.Cinema is art but we have no problempaying for it. TV contains art but we haveno problem paying for it. (For any whoargue that the current trend of realityprogramming isn’t art; bad art is still art.)Within this questioning of the MPO’snecessity is a deeper concern. In aneconomy where your paycheck isn’tstretching nearly as much as it usedand needs to, why should we spendour hard earned on art? Apart from thecinema/ TV response above, I would liketo more fully answer. In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslowproposed a system which ranked humanneeds. In his hierarchy, he placed air andfood as more important than friendshipand family, which itself is placed abovemorality and creativity, etc.I fully agree with the structure suggestedby Maslow. Roof overhead and tabledfood are crucial. The perspective that’smissing from this is that for some art isnot merely a creative urge or a graspat the esteem of our peers. For some itis a need like friendship, like work, likelove. It’s not more important than living totomorrow, but it’s close.I cannot speak for everyone. It is possibleyou do not share this perspective, andthat’s fine. It is not a requirement ofthe human experience to be party toeverything. But do understand; there arethose for whom art is not a luxury, not ahobby, not a pastime.Experiment: Turn off your radio the nexttime you’re in your car. Drive to whereverit is you’re going in total silence. Thenlisten, carefully, for the sound of your soulyearning for something more.We willingly pay for services and goods.Well, art is a service. Art is a good. Wewon’t know how good until we lose it; butlet’s not get to that point.Calvin Wong is a full time writer andteacher of writing. His favourite piece ofclassical music is ‘Pictures at an Exhibition:Promenade’ by Modest Mussorgsky.Photo Credit moonbird @ flickr.com67
