Sexual relationshipsFigure 38 shows that respondents currently inrelationships that have lasted more than oneyear are more likely to state that their partner’slast HIV test was negative, and less likely tohave not asked their partner about their HIVtesting history or to state that they “don’t know”their partner’s testing history.Forty-three percent of respondents currently ina regular relationship of less than six monthshad not asked about their partner’s HIV testinghistory or said that they “don’t know”, comparedto just 10% of those who were currently in arelationship of 3-4 years duration.Figure 38. Sexual relationshipsCombining information on a partner’s last HIV test status with information on therespondent’s last HIV test status, the degree of possible sero-concordance (having the sameHIV status) with regular partners was determined (Table 19). It is important to note that weare not able to establish the actual level of sero-concordance, since a respondent’sassessment of their own or their partner’s actual HIV status may not be correct.Table 19. Only includes men who had a current regular sexpartner and who provided information on their own HIV test history (n=613).Respondents whose last HIV test was negative were most likely to state that their currentregular partner’s status was HIV negative (71.8%), and respondents who had tested HIVpositive were most likely to state that their partner had tested HIV positive (34.6%).Just over half (53.5%) of the men with a current regular sex partner could be categorised asbeing in a possible sero-concordant relationship based on their last test result (theirrespective latest HIV test statuses were both negative or both positive). A small number(4.4%) were possibly in a sero-discordant relationship (tested positive and negative or testednegative and positive) and in 39.6% of cases the respondent was uncertain about either theirown or their partner’s HIV test status. These findings are similar to those found in 2002.Concurrent sexual partneringSome individuals - and couples - have sex with men other than their current regular partnerat a time when they are still together. There are many different scenarios in which this mayoccur. Sometimes it might happen within the bounds of an agreement between partners in acouple, or, it might occur in contradiction of agreed terms to a relationship. It could happenwith or without the other partner’s knowledge, and it can also happen when a relationship isjust forming or about to end.The reason why we have designed the GAPSS questionnaire to identify overlapping,simultaneous or “concurrent” relationships is primarily because it presents risks for thetransmission of HIV in certain conditions. While it would be extremely valuable to learn moreabout the circumstances, pressures and meanings facing men who have sex with men inlonger-term sexual relationships, particularly with regards to sex outside the relationship, thisis beyond the scope of the GAPSS questionnaire. The following analysis presents theproportion of men in regular sexual relationships that we were able to identify as havingconcurrent sexual partners, and later sections will examine the patterns of condom use andHIV risk present in these circumstances.GAPSS 2004: Findings from the Gay Auckland Periodic Sex Survey 38
