2013CLEARWATER CONSERVANCYANNUAL REPORTLearn more and get involved at clearwaterconservancy.orgIn its 32nd year of conserving land and water in CentralPennsylvania, ClearWater Conservancy continued to buildits capacity to provide conservation services to the peopleof Centre and surrounding counties.The conservancy works with a growing list of landowners whowant to conserve or restore natural resources on their land.Their foresight and commitment will have a profound effect onthe flora, fauna and aesthetics of this place for generations.2013 marked the 15th year of the Spring Creek WaterResources Monitoring Project. The project was initiatedin 1998 by the Spring Creek Watershed Association andis housed at ClearWater Conservancy. Its goal is to gatherbaseline information about the water resources in theSpring Creek watershed that can be used for the long-termprotection of these resources as demands increase with time.Annually, we leverage the goodwill of hundreds of volunteersto execute projects, events, conservation easement monitoring,riparian stewardship and more. From our board of directorsto the cadre of folks who gather in our meeting room to stuffenvelopes, a diverse group of people give generously ofthemselves to help with the cause.In 2013, we received about 1,000 individual gifts of cash orservices from families and enterprises in central Pennsylvania.That broad support is reflective of our core value that peoplehave a place in the landscape and that only through inclusion,education, partnership and the hard work of on-the-groundconservation will we continue to make a difference.The conservancy continues to expand its use of technologywith beneficial impacts on outreach, marketing, fundraising,mapping and record-keeping.Looking ahead, there is lots of work to do. As our regioncontinues to develop and grow, our unique landscapesand habitats will be increasingly pressured. Only throughthoughtful planning and conservation can we maintain thewonders of nature and scenes of beauty residents of centralPennsylvania have come to know and appreciate.5,146 acres of land protected69,890 ft of streamside bufferplantings installed

About 80 miles ofstream are monitoredannually through16 sites alongSpring Creek andits tributaries byClearWater’s WaterResources Coordinator,who also maintainsthe field stationsand a database ofinformation collectedthrough the WaterResources MonitoringProject, a collaborativeeffort of ClearWaterConservancy andthe Spring CreekWatershedAssociation.1,320 tree and shrub seedlings wereplanted in 2013 at 21 riparian restorationsites. 715 of these were locally native speciespropagated by ClearWater’s all-volunteerGrowing Native program.ClearWater conducted stewardshipactivities on 16 properties in 2013:14 conservation easements andtwo owned properties. In all, 1,647acres were scrutinized to ensurethat conservation objectives arebeing met.1919 ClearWater supportersare membersof our LISLECircle, named forElsa Lisle who gaveClearWater’s firstsignificant bequestin 2009. Annual Cleanup Day puts a dentin trash…More than 350 volunteers devoted more than1,400 hours to clean up 21 tons of trash throughoutCentre County during Watershed CleanupDay 2013.4,500linearfeetHoofing it forconservation…20 volunteerconservation easementsite stewards spent265 hours (mostlyon foot walkingproperties) monitoringand reportingon ClearWater’sConservationeasements in 2013.That equates to$6,000 in volunteercontributions tothe community inlabor value.320 people…The Riparian Conservationprogram restored 4,500 linearfeet of stream bank in 2013.320 people hit the trail, climbed or paddledwith ClearWater on its Adventures inConservation series of outdoor events in 2013.AIC is ClearWater’s effort to directly link itsconstituents with conserved lands and thewonders of the great outdoors.
