Wake Med Takes to the Skies<br />
In November 2006, <strong>WakeMed</strong><br />
received Certificate of Need<br />
(CON) approval from the North<br />
Carolina State Division of Facility<br />
Services to move forward<br />
with an air ambulance program.<br />
After going to the <strong>WakeMed</strong><br />
Board of Directors for final<br />
approval this spring, <strong>WakeMed</strong><br />
plans to formally introduce an<br />
air ambulance flight program by<br />
the end of 2007. Upon Board<br />
approval, <strong>WakeMed</strong>’s Mobile<br />
Critical Care Services department<br />
will begin negotiating partnership<br />
agreements, training,<br />
and hiring or cross-training<br />
employees to staff the air ambulance.<br />
The Impact<br />
We know that reducing the time<br />
it takes to get a critically ill<br />
patient into the hospital can<br />
greatly improve clinical outcomes.<br />
Air ambulance transport<br />
is estimated to cut patient transport<br />
time in half, which is of the<br />
greatest benefit for trauma,<br />
stroke, cardiac, neonatal and<br />
other patients who require<br />
<strong>WakeMed</strong>’s specialty tertiary<br />
services, and whose outcomes<br />
are enhanced by receiving care<br />
as quickly as possible. In the<br />
first year of the program, we<br />
anticipate transporting more<br />
than 500 patients.<br />
“The introduction of an air ambulance<br />
service is an important step not only for<br />
<strong>WakeMed</strong> but for the patients we serve<br />
throughout the region,” explains<br />
Dr. Bill Atkinson, president & CEO.<br />
“By allowing us to transport and serve<br />
critically ill patients faster, we can now<br />
do even more to improve the quality of<br />
care delivered in North Carolina. This<br />
service will further enhance our outstanding<br />

A Long Road<br />

Due to the increasing volume of cardiac<br />
and trauma patients in our region and<br />
the increasing population in Wake<br />
County, <strong>WakeMed</strong> has worked hard to<br />
introduce an air ambulance flight program<br />
for several <strong>years</strong> now, an important<br />

Leading the Charge<br />
With this new service comes the introduction<br />
of Ed Woodard, Jr., who joined<br />
<strong>WakeMed</strong> on January 2 as Executive<br />
Director and Chief of <strong>WakeMed</strong> Emergency<br />
Response Services. Chief Woodard oversees<br />
<strong>WakeMed</strong>’s Mobile Critical Care Services,<br />
Campus Police & Public Safety<br />
departments, fleet management,<br />
and brings more than 30 <strong>years</strong><br />
of experience in emergency<br />
response, including air<br />
operations. Joining Chief<br />
Woodard in managing the<br />
new flight program is Betsy<br />
Sullivan, RN, EMT, CMTE,<br />
who was recently named<br />
director and chief of Mobile<br />
Critical Care Services. Betsy has<br />
been with <strong>WakeMed</strong>’s Emergency<br />
Services Institute for three <strong>years</strong>,<br />
and during this time, has played an<br />
integral role in <strong>WakeMed</strong>’s disaster<br />
response efforts and in preparing<br />
for the flight program.<br />
“I am pleased and feel fortunate<br />
to join <strong>WakeMed</strong> during such an<br />
important time,” explains Chief<br />
Woodard. “We are preparing to<br />
introduce a new service that will<br />
provide a higher level of care to<br />
patients in North Carolina. I have<br />
experienced firsthand the impact<br />
that a successful air ambulance<br />
program can have on the delivery<br />
of outstanding patient care, and I<br />
