Can I see my doctor in the evening or at weekends?
Many surgeries are now open for longer. Contact your current GP surgery to ask
about opening hours. For details of GP surgeries that offer appointments in the
early morning, in the evening, or at weekends, please see the list provided, call
the number below or visit us online.
When will the new health centre be ready to openin Manchester?
Spring 2009.
Will I have to register with the health centre to use it?
No, although you will be able to register there if you wish. The health centre will
be open to all members of the public. To register, remember you would need to
switch from your current GP surgery if you have one.
When will the new GP practices open in Manchester?
Three new practices are due to open in 2009 and further details will be made
public as these services are introduced. These are all new services in addition to
the practices we already have in Manchester. If you wish to use these surgeries
you will need to register with them.

doctor and get the services you need

Health care when and where you
need it
Patients tell us that they want more convenience and choice from the services
they receive from doctors. Many people want to be able to see a doctor in the
evening, at weekends or when they are away from home.
We are committed to giving you quality healthcare, when and where you
need it. We are making it easier for all patients to see a doctor and we are
introducing new services. This leaflet tells you more about the improvements.
Extended opening hours
We have been working with GP surgeries to get agreement for them to
stay open for longer, giving you the opportunity to see a doctor early in the
morning, during the evening, or at the weekend.
More than half of GP surgeries in Manchester now offer appointments outside
normal working hours. You can easily check who offers this service in the list
provided here, or please call the number below or visit us online.
Fast, easy access to your doctor
If you need to see a doctor quickly, remember you should be offered an
appointment within two working days. Equally you may wish to be seen less
urgently so you can plan your appointment or see a particular doctor.
GP out-of-hours
If you need to see a doctor urgently when your local surgery is shut, please
contact your surgery on the usual number and follow the instructions to access
the out-of-hours service. Alternatively, call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Extra GP services coming to
your area
New health centre
We are working to give you new GP services for more choice and convenience. In
Spring 2009 a new health centre will open in Manchester city centre, operating 7
days a week from 8am to 8pm.
Any member of the public will be able to simply walk in and see a doctor or nurse
at the new health centre or phone and book an appointment in advance. You will
not need to be registered with the health centre to use it. You will be able to use
the services offered there if you choose, as well as those at the GP surgery where
you are registered.
New surgeries
Three new GP surgeries will be opening in Manchester in 2009. The details
will be publicised locally as the services become available. Please call us on the
number below or visit us online if you would like to know more.
Registering with or changing GPs
If you are not registered with any doctor or would like to change your GP, you
can find out about GP surgeries in your area, the services they offer and opening
times by calling 0845 46 47 or visiting the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk.
Stay well this winter – remember your flu jab!
If you are over 65 or have a long term health problem such as a heart or
chest complaint, kidney disease or diabetes, you should have a flu jab this
winter.
If you’re in any of these groups the jab is available for free on the NHS.
It protects you from seasonal flu, which is an unpleasant illness and can
sometimes contribute to more serious health problems. Please ask at
your GP surgery for details.
