Both teams were excitedand ready to play. The 2ndscame out with a fast paced gameand great transitional offence.The game was there for thetaking and with 5 minutes to gothe boys were down by two.Knox showed great poise in thefinal minutes and came awaywith the victory, 39-32.Congratulations to all the boys inthe 2nds, especially the seniors;Dejan Nakic, Jackson Farley,Matthew Chau and AndrewGaitero who played their finalgame of basketball for Waverleyever.The 1sts also had a very closegame with Knox. It was anintense match which also saw 2points between the teams withinthe dying minutes. Waverley lost the toss and was sentin to bat. The first wicket fell with the total on 7when Benjamin O’Donnell was bowled. RavinDe Silva and Christian Cuenca looked solid andmoved the score along to 20 before Ravin DeSilva poked at one to be caught at a wide 2nd slip.Benjamin Hoffman hit a couple of nice shots butthe wet outfield was very slow and the Waverleyrun rate of 1.6 per over was not progressing thescoreboard at any speed. Christian Cuenca wasout attempting to lift the run rate and BenjaminHoffman fell soon after. Joseph Zieme wassomewhat successful in lifting the rate andcompiled 24 runs in a brief partnership with JasonMacDonald in his first outing for the 1st XI. Hebatted with confidence but was out attempting topush the score along. William Paterson, JamesMaunsell and Ryan Faulkner-Hogg all did theirbit to push the total along with James Maunsellinjuring an ankle turning for a 2nd run.At the end of 41 overs Waverley had totalled 8for 87. Nicholas Hardie gave the side a goodstart with a wicket in his 2nd over but a droppedcatch soon after let Knox begin to cruise towardsthe total. Jason MacDonald bowled 5 overs andwas unlucky not to pick up a wicket. As the totalapproached, William Paterson managed to get afalse stroke from the batsman who skied the ball tothe ever-reliable Christian Cuenca who after muchcatching practice on the day accepted the chance.He was rewarded with an over himself in the 1st XIto complete the season. Knox reached the totalin the 29th over for the loss of just the 2 wickets.Congratulations to the Knox team on winning theCAS title.All other games were washed out whichunfortunately left the 2nd XI just 1 point behindKnox in 2nd place.Saturday night saw a crowd of over 200 studentsand parents attend the presentation evening inthe Gymnasium. It was a fun night with Mr JamesMaloney again surprising the crowd with his triviaknowledge and Br Brian Murphy presenting theawards.Joseph Zieme, from the 1st XI, won the majoraward, bearing Br Murphy’s name, with DeanJones from the 2nd XI a very close 2nd and HarryPepper in 3rd place.I would like to thank the Cricket Supporters’ Club,Mr New and those members of the 10A & B teamswho helped set up, as well as Mr Eldridge andsome 9A members. In particular Mr John Kara,Mrs Tracey Murphy and Mrs Louise Zieme forassisting with the success of the evening.Mr. J.W.
