BSc and MSci Exams <strong>FAQ</strong>Mathematics Department2013-14Version 2014.1This <strong>FAQ</strong> gives some departmental in<strong>for</strong>mation about the datesand deadlines <strong>for</strong> this year’s <strong>exams</strong> process. It tells you who to see ifyou have any questions on the <strong>exams</strong> process or your results, andgives some of the options that might be available if somethinggoes wrong. This is an in<strong>for</strong>mal document, so if any in<strong>for</strong>mationhere contradicts college regulations or practices, it’s theregulations or practices that take precedence.Where do I go <strong>for</strong> general in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>exams</strong>?Most of the personalised in<strong>for</strong>mation you need is on the CampusConnect web portal. Also, the following web page gives lots ofgeneral in<strong>for</strong>mation, including a list of key dates, and a link tocollege regulations:http://www.rhul.ac.uk/ecampus/academicsupport/examinations/home.aspxWhat do I do if I’m ill? What if I have other extenuatingcircumstances?You need to declare these, and provide evidence, as soon as youcan. For circumstances affecting Maths <strong>exams</strong>, you need to submitoriginal copies of your evidence in writing (e.g. doctor’s certificateor other relevant documentation to support your case) toGuillaume Subra, the Departmental Administrator, and addressedto the Chair of the Maths Sub-Board Prof Pat O’Mahony. Thedeadline <strong>for</strong> submitting evidence is 12.00 mid-day on Tuesday 3rdJune 2014.

Who can I talk to?Talk to your personal adviser. If you are not in your final year, theycan give an indication of your results once the pass/fail lists arepublished. Who can I talk to?When the pass/fail lists are released you can talk to Dr Jens Bolte(jens.bolte@rhul.ac.uk). Either go and see him directly in his officeor email him (and arrange a time to meet if this is possible <strong>for</strong> you).After the full exam results have been released and it is confirmedthat you did not pass the year you must talk to our AcademicCoordinator Dr Jens Bolte (jens.bolte@rhul.ac.uk)): he is there toanswer your questions in this situation. You might get an email fromhim over the summer: you should check your college email everyday, as we might need in<strong>for</strong>mation from you at very short notice.You are also very welcome to talk to your Personal Adviser.I’ve not done as well in one of my courses as I hoped. Whatare the options?You should discuss this with your personal adviser. Here are somepoints you should be aware of.Here is some terminology. MT1810 is a course and BSc Mathmaticsis a programme. If you retake (or repeat) a course, you attend thecourse again the following year; this includes attending thelectures, and submitting all coursework as well as attending thesummer exam. If you resit a course, you just attend the summerexam.3

It is awarded to thegroup of students who submit the best MT2800 project.The Mary Bradburn Prizes were given in memory of Dr MaryBradburn, student at Royal Holloway College 1935-1940 and staff1945-1980. They are awarded to under-graduate students of theMathematics Department in their third or fourth year <strong>for</strong>outstanding ef<strong>for</strong>t or achievement, and were awarded <strong>for</strong> the firsttime in 2004The Driver prizes, in all subjects taught at Royal Holloway at thetime, were endowed by Miss Mary Ann Driver in 1887, just after theopening of the College. Miss Driver was the sister of Jane, wife ofThomas Holloway. Up to two are awarded in Mathematics, <strong>for</strong>post-examination essays.The Robert L. MacNeil Mathematical Prize is <strong>for</strong> the third yearundergraduate who made the most valuable contributions to thedepartment.The two IMA Prizes are awarded by the Institute of Mathematicsand its Applications to the two best finalists in Mathematics at theCollege. The prizes consist of free membership to the IMAApart from the IMA and Thewlis/Wilks prizes, the Mathematics prizesare to be spent on books.7
