I musthave the most biased view ofanyone, but I think we deserveit, not necessarily for ourcurrent success competitively,as no club in the land couldhope to match the dominanceour team of the early 1960′shad on the roads and over thecountry, and with severalOlympians to call upon, but forthe way we have become allembracing in providing trainingand competition for all abilitiesand all ages. The single sex,seniors only team of the 60′shas evolved into a verydifferent club, one thatarguably promotes our sport toa wider community than couldever be contemplated back inthe ‘good old days’.Inspiration for parents ofour young athletesJust over a year ago, a parentapproached me at the end ofmy PV Session and asked if wedid indoor training. I saidthat we had no indoor PVfacilities within 50 miles ofPortsmouth, but we trainedoutside when conditionsallowed.I soon got to know ClaudiaCubbage quite well, anddiscovered that she was amulti eventer before havingher children. She trained hardover the winter and had afantastic season, culminatingin becoming Veteran F40British PV Champion. AsClaudia said “Not bad forsomeone who has spent thelast 12 years doing absolutelyno sport what so ever, neverthought I would win thewww.portsmouthathletic.co.uk Page 10
Masters title or be selected forHampshire Seniors”.Event 2013100HW 27.66HJ 1.30PV 2.30LJ 3.53SP4K 8.50HT4K 15.28JT600 19.60Among herseason'sachievements isbeing ranked 4 th inthe UK at Polevault and 15 th inshot put the v40categoryHelen Lockyer also returned tocompetition recently and hasserved the Club well, returningto good form and winningways.Ros Stansbury competed inevery Veteran, SAL andUKWAL, and she has youngtwin girls who obviously takeup her time.Steve Davey and RichardHealey were good pointearners for the men's team inthe SAL, with Steve helping toclinch our survival in the topdivision in the last event of thelast match at Southampton.Steve also become BritishDecathlon Champion thisyear.The moral of this is: 'If you didit once, you can do it again'and help the Club whilstkeeping yourself fit.Our Veteran Athletes havemade an enormouscontribution to our own SCVACLeague (the ladies winning forthe second year running) ANDthe Senior Leagues - ourteams would struggle withoutthem.I am very proud of our olderathletes and hope toencourage more 'returners'next season.Lynne NewtonVeterans' Team Managerwww.portsmouthathletic.co.uk Page 11
