1879 Emlen Physick EstateHistoric Sites1048 Washington St., Cape MayA visit to the Physick Estate offers alook back at our Victorian past: its architecture,decorative arts, customs, and the livesof one Cape May family, the Physicks.Emlen Physick Jr., his widowed mother,Frances Ralston, and his maiden aunt EmilieParmentier moved into their home whenit was completed in 1879.Emlen, who never married, was descendedfrom a famous and wealthy Philadelphiafamily. His grandfather, Dr. PhilipSyng Physick, was considered the father ofAmerican surgery and invented numeroussurgical procedures and medical instrumentsthat are still in use today.While he did graduate from medicalschool, Emlen never practiced medicine. InHouse tours are offered daily April through Decemberand select dates at other times of the year.Special living history presentations are also available.The Physick House and the Carriage Houseare air-conditioned for the comfort of our visitors.Cape May, he led the life of a gentleman farmer.He bought and sold a great deal of real estate inCape May, and took an active interest in localdoings.The Physick House is attributed to FrankFurness, who designed more than 600 buildingsin the greater Philadelphia area in the late-19thand early-20th centuries. Such trademark featuresas the greatly oversized corbelled (upsidedown) chimneys, jerkinhead dormers, and porchbrackets appear in many other Furness buildingsof the period.Also on the grounds is the 1876 Carriage House. Historic Sites1859 Cape May LighthouseLocated in Cape May Point State ParkIn December,1986, the Cape MayLighthouse wasleased to the Mid-Atlantic Center forthe Arts & Humanities(MAC). The organizationassumedresponsibility forrestoring the lighthouse,interpretingit as a historic siteand opening it to thepublic.The process ofrestoration tookmore than 15 years (1987-2002), and was funded bynearly $2 million in grants.MAC supervised the restoration of the lighthousewindows and doors, the addition of safety improvements,the restoration of the oil house which is at the entrance tothe lighthouse grounds, the restoration of the lantern roofand windows, the interior walls and staircase, an archaeologicalinvestigation that located the original privies andwalkways, and the restoration of the grounds.The lighthouse has also been re-painted in its originalcolor scheme, in which the tower is a light beige and thelantern is red.Visitors can climb the 199 steps to the top for a breathtakingview of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay.For those who choose not to climb, the Lighthouse’sOil House has been fully restored and houses a visitors’orientation center as well as a museum shop offering avariety of lighthouse and seashore memorabilia. Specialtrolley tours offer a chance to visit the Lighthouse atnight and hear ghost stories involving the Lighthouse.Thousands of visitors each year experience a visit tothe top of the lighthouse, participating in a century-oldJersey Shore rite.World War II Lookout TowerLocated on Sunset Boulevard in Lower TownshipRestoration of Fire Control Tower No. 23, a World War II coastal artillerylookout tower, is MAC’s latest historic preservation project.Fire Control Tower No. 23 is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War IItower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known asFort Miles. Built in 1942, the tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteriesof coastal artillery. The tower was listed on the National Register of HistoricPlaces on Nov. 17, 2003.The restoration included building spiral staircases in the Tower so that the publiccan safely climb to the top; construction of a wooden walkway from the streetto the Tower, and a deck around its base to preserve the fragile dune environment;replacing missing windows and doors; recreating historical details, such asthe original wooden ladders, and outfitting the watch room and viewing platformat the top; installing interpretive panels along the walkway and at every level inthe Tower; and upgrading the existing parking lot across Sunset Boulevard. AWall of Honor on the third level honors local World War II veterans. The Mid-AtlanticCenter for the Arts &Humanities and therebirth of Cape MayThe Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities(MAC) was born in September 1970 at a critical juncture inCape May’s history.In the 1960s, Cape May had become a magnet for growingnumbers of historic preservationists and artists, attracted byits collection of Victorian seaside architecture. Their visionwas increasingly at odds with the city government, whichsaw modern motel construction as the answer to Cape May’sdeclining number of visitors. By 1970, preservationists vowedthat they would band together and fight any demolitions.They did not have long to wait. In September, the developer-ownersof the Emlen Physick Estate announced plansto bulldoze this landmark to make way for tract housing. Tostop this plan, MAC’s founders took the lead in incorporatingthe Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts.Their first priority, naturally, was to restore the Physick Estate.They rallied an army of volunteers, who repaired leakingroofs, sanded and painted, reglazed missing windows, clearedjungle growth from the grounds, and carried out the manytasks needed to bring the Estate back from the brink. Theythen embarked on a thoroughrestoration of the main houseas a Victorian house museum,a mission which has continuedto the present.From the outset, however,MAC’s founders launched programsthat went far beyondrestoring the Physick Estate.One of the major initiatives wasto extend MAC’s interpretativereach over the entire community.In 1971, MAC startedguided walking tours of CapeMay’s Historic District. Thefollowing year, they purchasedthe trolley tour franchise ofthe defunct Victorian VillageDevelopment Corporation, andin 1973 began major historichouse tours that opened largenumbers of Cape May’s Victoriangems to the public.Equally important, MAC’sfounders launched specialThe Emlen Physick Estate today at1048 Washington St.The Emlen Physick Estate in 1970events that increased Cape May’s appeal to visitors and transformedthe economy of the area. The following year, MAC’s first Christmas CandlelightHouse Tour put Cape May on the path of becoming a majorChristmas destination.As Cape May’s popularity rose in the 1980s in response toa national craze for Victoriana, so did the range and complexityof MAC’s tours and activities. From the single trolley tour routeof the 1970s, a second was added in 1983 and a third in 1985. In1984, the four-day Victorian Weekend in October was expandedto a 10-day Victorian Week. Christmas trolley tours were introducedto the holiday season, and special events were launched forFebruary, April and May.MAC’s next phase of growth was the “acquisition” of theCape May Lighthouse. After three years of intensive negotiations,MAC received a long-term lease in 1986 from the State ParkService for this 1859-vintage structure. Under the lease, MACassumed responsibility for the restoration and operation of theLighthouse as a museum. In 1987, the ground floor was opened tothe public and the following year,public safety improvements weremade that allowed the public toclimb to the top of the tower.The restoration of the CapeMay Lighthouse offered a newarea of interpretation, involvinglighthouse and maritime historyand technology. It appealed tonew audiences — lighthousebuffs and families with children— with the 60,000 visitors in1988 increasing to over 110,000by 1997. The Lighthouse alsohoused MAC’s first MuseumShop.In the decades since, MAChas continued to make greatstrides in its efforts to extend thetourism season and offer moreto see and do for Cape May’svisitors.
