The <strong>Mid</strong>-<strong>Atlantic</strong><strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> &Humanities and <strong>the</strong>rebirth of <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>The <strong>Mid</strong>-<strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> & Humanities(MAC) was born <strong>in</strong> September 1970 at a critical juncture <strong>in</strong><strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’s history. In <strong>the</strong> 1960s, <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong> had become a magnet <strong>for</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>gnumbers of historic preservationists and artists, attracted byits collection of Victorian seaside architecture. Their visionwas <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly at odds with <strong>the</strong> city government, whichsaw modern motel construction as <strong>the</strong> answer to <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’sdecl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g number of visitors. By 1970, preservationists vowedthat <strong>the</strong>y would band toge<strong>the</strong>r and fight any demolitions. They did not have long to wait. In September, <strong>the</strong> developer-ownersof <strong>the</strong> Emlen Physick Estate announced plansto bulldoze this landmark to make way <strong>for</strong> tract hous<strong>in</strong>g. Tostop this plan, MAC’s founders took <strong>the</strong> lead <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mid</strong>-<strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>.Their first priority, naturally, was to restore <strong>the</strong> Physick Estate. They rallied an army of volunteers, who repaired leak<strong>in</strong>groofs, sanded and pa<strong>in</strong>ted, reglazed miss<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>dows, clearedjungle growth from <strong>the</strong> grounds, and carried out <strong>the</strong> manytasks needed to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Estate back from <strong>the</strong> br<strong>in</strong>k. They<strong>the</strong>n embarked on a thoroughrestoration of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> houseas a Victorian house museum,a mission which has cont<strong>in</strong>uedto <strong>the</strong> present. From <strong>the</strong> outset, however,MAC’s founders launched programsthat went far beyondrestor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Physick Estate. One of <strong>the</strong> major <strong>in</strong>itiatives wasto extend MAC’s <strong>in</strong>terpretativereach over <strong>the</strong> entire community. In 1971, MAC startedguided walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>tours</strong> of <strong>Cape</strong><strong>May</strong>’s Historic District. Thefollow<strong>in</strong>g year, <strong>the</strong>y purchased<strong>the</strong> <strong>trolley</strong> tour franchise of<strong>the</strong> defunct Victorian VillageDevelopment Corporation, and<strong>in</strong> 1973 began major historichouse <strong>tours</strong> that opened largenumbers of <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’s Victoriangems to <strong>the</strong> public.Equally important, MAC’sfounders launched specialThe Emlen Physick Estate today at1048 Wash<strong>in</strong>gton St.The Emlen Physick Estate <strong>in</strong> 1970events that <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’s appeal to visitors and trans<strong>for</strong>med<strong>the</strong> economy of <strong>the</strong> area. They broke new ground <strong>in</strong> 1973when <strong>the</strong>y held <strong>the</strong> first Victorian Weekend over <strong>the</strong> ColumbusDay holiday. The follow<strong>in</strong>g year, MAC’s first Christmas CandlelightHouse Tour put <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong> on <strong>the</strong> path of becom<strong>in</strong>g a majorChristmas dest<strong>in</strong>ation.As <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’s popularity rose <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980s <strong>in</strong> response toa national craze <strong>for</strong> Victoriana, so did <strong>the</strong> range and complexityof MAC’s <strong>tours</strong> and activities. From <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>trolley</strong> tour routeof <strong>the</strong> 1970s, a second was added <strong>in</strong> 1983 and a third <strong>in</strong> 1985. In1984, <strong>the</strong> four-day Victorian Weekend <strong>in</strong> October was expandedto a 10-day Victorian Week. Christmas <strong>trolley</strong> <strong>tours</strong> were <strong>in</strong>troducedto <strong>the</strong> holiday season, and special events were launched <strong>for</strong>February, April and <strong>May</strong>.MAC’s next phase of growth was <strong>the</strong> “acquisition” of <strong>the</strong><strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong> Lighthouse. After three years of <strong>in</strong>tensive negotiations,MAC received a long-term lease <strong>in</strong> 1986 from <strong>the</strong> State ParkService <strong>for</strong> this 1859-v<strong>in</strong>tage structure. Under <strong>the</strong> lease, MACassumed responsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> restoration and operation of <strong>the</strong>Lighthouse as a museum. In 1987, <strong>the</strong> ground floor was opened to<strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year, public safety improvements weremade that allowed <strong>the</strong> public toclimb to <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> tower. The restoration of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cape</strong><strong>May</strong> Lighthouse offered a newarea of <strong>in</strong>terpretation, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>glighthouse and maritime historyand technology. It appealed tonew audiences — lighthousebuffs and families with children— with <strong>the</strong> 60,000 visitors <strong>in</strong>1988 <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g to over 110,000by 1997. The Lighthouse alsohoused MAC’s first MuseumShop. In <strong>the</strong> decades s<strong>in</strong>ce, MAChas cont<strong>in</strong>ued to make greatstrides <strong>in</strong> its ef<strong>for</strong>ts to extend <strong>the</strong>tourism season and offer moreto see and do <strong>for</strong> <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong>’svisitors. In 1990, MAC launched<strong>the</strong> <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>May</strong> Music Festival tobr<strong>in</strong>g music lovers to <strong>the</strong> area(CONTINUED ON FOLLOWING PAGE)
