INTRODUCTIONHalton <strong>and</strong> St Helens Primary Care Trust are committed to minimising the impact ofenvironmental pollution related to any of its activities. The safety of patients, staff <strong>and</strong> thegeneral public is of the utmost importance <strong>and</strong> therefore procedures will be adopted to reduceany risk associated with waste disposal. These guidelines outline the actions to be taken inorder to ensure safe disposal of all waste. It is taken from the Department of Health’s, HealthTechnical Memor<strong>and</strong>um 07-01; Safe <strong>Management</strong> of Healthcare <strong>Waste</strong>.There is a very real need to reduce both the cost <strong>and</strong> environmental impact arising from thegeneration <strong>and</strong> disposal of waste in health care settings. The safe <strong>and</strong> effective disposal of thiswaste starts with the health care practitioner.PURPOSEThe purpose of this policy is to ensure waste is segregated <strong>and</strong> disposed of safely.The success of good waste management systems depends on every waste producer <strong>and</strong>h<strong>and</strong>ler assuming responsibility.All staff will produce <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>le some kind of waste at some point in their working day, whetherit is scrap paper, empty packaging, used syringes or dressings.The person generating the waste is responsible for ensuring it h<strong>and</strong>led <strong>and</strong> disposed ofcorrectly.ObjectivesIt is the aim of the PCT to ensure waste is managed correctly which meet the requirement ofenvironment <strong>and</strong> sustainability, Health Technical Memor<strong>and</strong>um 07-01: Safe <strong>Management</strong> ofHealthcare <strong>Waste</strong> (HTM 07-01) <strong>and</strong> the European <strong>Waste</strong> Catalogue (EWC). Adherence to thiswill ensure all waste is segregated <strong>and</strong> disposed of efficiently <strong>and</strong> in the correct manner <strong>and</strong>receptacle.OutcomeThe risk of health care associated infection, contamination <strong>and</strong> injury from incorrect disposal ofwaste will be minimised. Financial implications should be considered when disposing waste.DUTIESDuties within the OrganisationIt is the responsibility of all service leads <strong>and</strong> producers of waste to ensure that they underst<strong>and</strong>their obligations in relation to waste disposal <strong>and</strong> that they comply with this <strong>Policy</strong>.The following specific duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities within Halton & St Helens PCT apply:Page 4 of 33
