WelcomeWelcome to Féile an Phobail’s 20th birthdaycelebrations! Who would have thought all thoseyears ago that from the acorn of a few streetparties, a small march to Dunville Park led by a ponyand trap, and a rain drenched week of entertainmentin a circus tent in an Andersonstown car park, wouldemerge the great oak that is Féile an Phobail - thelargest community festival in Ireland and one of thelargest in Europe! In 1988 it was impossible toenvision a better, more peaceful world. We can thankour lucky stars that in Ireland – through dialogue, compromise, mutual respect, establishing principles ofequality and human rights – we have somehowemerged with a template for peacefultransformation. We like to think that Féile an Phobailplayed its part in encouraging dialogue, inclusivenessand reconciliation.Although the people of West Belfast are certainlynot of one political persuasion or a homogeneousgroup, I look forward to the day when we inAndersonstown, on the Falls, the Shankill and SandyRow can not only celebrate our neighbourlinesswithout division or barricade but celebrate one hugeféile across this great city which would include thenew brothers and sisters from other cultures andcountries whose presence we welcome and areenriched by.Finally, I would like to pay special tribute to the manyvolunteers, community groups, artists, committeemembers, funders & sponsors (see inside frontcover) and Féile staff who all made massivecontributions over the years and who will have madethis anniversary a resounding success! We have a brilliant programme. That’s what’s in store with ‘Dirty Dancing’ being at theDrive-In. In the summer of 1963, 17-year-old New Yorker Frances‘Baby’ Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is vacationing with her family atKellerman’s holiday resort. Baby develops a crush on the resort’sdance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) and when Baby isinvited to a party, she sees for the first time the ‘dirty dancing’ thatthe staff all enjoys. As Baby becomes Johnny’s pupil in dance, tempers flare and a romance begins. The clash of middle-class richkid and working-class dance instructor is fraught with angst yetdespite everything the magic of the dancing reigns supreme andthey certainly have the time of their lives!‘The Exorcist’Monday 4th AugustChris MacNeil notices dramatic and dangerous changes in thebehavior and physical make-up of her twelve-year-old daughterRegan. Regan exhibits strange, unnatural powers, including levitationand great strength. At first, Chris believes that Regan’s rapid mentaland physical changes are due to trauma from Chris’s recent divorceand doctors try to find an explanation for her bizarre behaviour.Supernatural occurrences plague the household and two priests arecalled to perform an exorcism. From that moment the horrordevelops… Possibly the scariest film you’ll ever see!‘Pulp Fiction’Tuesday 5th AugustEverybody can remember putting two fingers side ways in front ofyour face and doing the ‘pulp fiction’ dance to Chuck Berry’s ‘YouNever Can Tell’. If you claim you haven’t, you are obviously lying!Take two hit men (John Travolta & Samuel L. Jackson), a mob boss(Ving Rhames), his wife (Uma Thurman), a washed-up boxer (BruceWillis) and a series of bizarre coincidences, occurrences andmishaps involving Pumpkin, Honey Bunny, Captain Koons and theGimp, and you have what can only be described as one of QuentinTarantino’s best works.‘Dirty Dancing’Dé Domhnaigh 3ú LúnasaNí chuireann duine ar bith 'Baby' sa choirnéal, chan an Fhéile go fiú.Cuirimid í ar scáileán 40 troigh! I samhradh 1963, bhí Frances'Baby' House, 17 mbliana d'aois, as Nua Eabhrac ar saoire lenateaghlach ar laithreán saoire Kellerman.Titeann Baby i ngrá le hoidedamhsa an laithreáin Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) agus nuair atugadh cuireadh di dul ar cóisir, feiceann sí an 'damhsa salach' denchéad uair, damhsa as a mbaineann an fhoireann uile sult. Nuair aéiríonn Baby ina mac léinn damhsa ag Johnny, éiríonn rudaí teasaíagus tosaíonn an grá. Is casta é an chaismirt idir girseachmheánaicme agus oide damhsa den lucht oibre ach in ainneoin gachrud, éiríonn dríocht an damhsa i réim agus bíonn an t-am is fearr inasaol acu!‘The Exorcist’Dé Luain 4 LúnasaTugann Chris MacNeil faoi deara athruithe atá drámata agusbaolach in iompar agus cruth fisiceach a hiníne 12 bhliain d’aois,Regan. Léiríonn Regan cumhachtaí aisteacha mínádúrtha, eadarbhuasú agus neart as cuimse ina measc. I dtús báire, creideannChris go mbaineann athruithe meabhracha agus fisiceacha Regan letráma mar gheall cholscaradh Chris ar na mallaibh, agus déananndochtuírí iarracht teacht ar mhíniú faoina hiompar aduain.Tá anteaghlach cráite ag tarlaithe osnádúrtha agus cuirtear fios ar an dáshagart le deamhandíbirt a dhéanamh. Hisfourth novel, ‘Havoc, in its Third Year’(2003), was long listed for theMan Booker prize and short listed for the Impac award. His workfor Hollywood includes ‘Public Enemies’, currently being filmed bydirector Michael Mann (‘Heat’) and starring Johnny Depp. ‘10 Daysto War’, his series of short films to mark the fifth anniversary of theinvasion of Iraq, was screened on BBC2 in March to critical acclaim. His journalism and his creative work uniquely reflects and iscertainly informed by his early politicisation - the result of growingup in Belfast in the 1960s, and his imprisonment in Long Kesh andBrixton Prison in the 1970s. He recently caused a storm ofcontroversy when he accused British novelist Martin Amis of racismtowards Muslims. He also co-writes a chess column for the‘Guardian’ every Monday. Ronan will be discussing the way his workfuses the personal and the political, and how working in themainstream he strives to keep a political perspective.
