After a great controversy with Buddhis<strong>the</strong>retics from Ceylon <strong>the</strong>re appeared a venerable butunknown devotee who prayed to be allowed to write downall <strong>the</strong> saint s songs from his own lips.This he did, and<strong>the</strong>n disappeared ;for it was no o<strong>the</strong>r than Shiva himself,who took <strong>the</strong> songs to heaven for <strong>the</strong> gladdening <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> gods. Next morning a perfect copy was found, athousand verses in all, signed by <strong>the</strong> god himself, besidehis imagein Chitambaram. All <strong>the</strong> devotees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>temple hastened to <strong>the</strong> saint for an explanation he told;<strong>the</strong>m to follow him, and led <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Shivain <strong>the</strong> Golden Court. &quot;That is <strong>the</strong> meaning,&quot;he said,and <strong>the</strong>rewith he disappeared, melting into <strong>the</strong> imageand he was seen no more.itself,A Legend <strong>of</strong> Shiva s DanceIt came to <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> Shiva that <strong>the</strong>re resided inTaragam forest ten thousand heretical rishis, who taughtthat <strong>the</strong> universe is eternal, that souls have no lord, andthat <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> works alone suffices for <strong>the</strong>attainment <strong>of</strong> salvation. He bade Vishnu accompany him in <strong>the</strong>form <strong>of</strong> a beautiful woman, and <strong>the</strong> two entered <strong>the</strong> wildforest, Shiva disguised as a wandering yogi, Vishnu as hiswife. Immediatelyall <strong>the</strong> rishis wives were seized withviolent longing for <strong>the</strong> yogi; <strong>the</strong> rishis <strong>the</strong>mselves wereequally infatuated with <strong>the</strong> seeming yogi s wife.
