Thank You for Supporting Napa Valley College Athletics
The citizens of Napa County made
a clear commitment to higher
education in 1941 when they
passed a bond issue to establish
Napa Junior College. One year
later, in 1942, Napa Junior College
was founded as part of Napa
Union High School district. World
War II held its first class to just
16 students, only one of whom
was male. Once the war was over,
The profile of a Napa Valley
College students has changed
over the history of the college.
Our first students entered after
high school and studied full-time.
Today’s student body is diverse in
age, ethnicity, family status, years
elapsed since high school and
We believe
that
participation
in physical
education
and intercollegiate
athletics is
a vital part
of the college and university
experience. It is a common saying
in the field of sports sociology
that participation in sports does
not build character. Participation
in sports reveals character. Our
student athletes and coaches consistently
demonstrate the truth of
this maxim in their daily student
lives as well as on the playing
field or court.
In order to allow smaller colleges
to compete on an even playing
field, the Bay Valley Conference
was realigned five years ago.
Larger schools which enjoyed a recruiting
pool of as many as 35,000
students per semester were shifted
to the Big Eight Conference.
Napa Valley College is a full member
of the Bay Valley Conference.
In the fall/winter sports framework,
Napa Valley College is represented
by teams in men’s soccer,
women’s volleyball, women’s golf
and men’s and women’s basketball.
Also beginning in fall 2011,
NVC will be fielding women’s
GIs flooded into the new college.
During 1948-49, a modern new
college was built next to the high
school.
The community reaffirmed its
commitment to the local college in
1962 by passing a bond issue to
buy land and build a new college
campus. The college finally had
its own campus, which opened in
1965, its own school district, and
educational goals. Our students
also have much in common: they
are bright, inquiring and goaloriented.
They share a strong
belief in education as a means of
improving their lives.
Approximately 60 percent of our
credit students are female, and
soccer – see the last paragraph
of Dean Luckey’s message on the
next page.
In the spring, Napa Valley College
is represented by teams in baseball,
softball and men’s golf.
Men’s golf and women’s golf
participate in Northern California’s
Big Eight Conference.
Men who attend Solano College
full-time may participate in NVC’s
soccer program. Men who attend
NVC full-time may also participate
in Solano’s football program, a
sport not available at NVC.
In addition to Napa Valley College,
the BVC is now composed of College
of Marin, Mendocino College,
Solano College, Los Medanos
College, Merritt College, Laney College,
Contra Costa College, Yuba
College, Folsom Lake College and
College of Alameda.
Some of the factors taken into
consideration in developing the
new alignment included size of
the student population, number of
sports offered, size of the athletic
budget and facilities (members of
the Big Eight, for example, have
more money to maintain facilities
and keep equipment upgraded).
Students who represent Napa Valley
College through participation on
an athletic team are subject to the
an enrollment of 1771 students. It
renamed itself Napa College.
In 1982, Napa College changed its
name to Napa Valley College. In
addition, while classes had long
been offered in the upper Napa
Valley, the opening of a permanent
Upper Valley Campus in the early
nineties brought educational
opportunities close to home for
upper valley residents, and added
the majority are under 25. More
than 10 percent of NVC students
are over 50. More than 70% of
our students attend on a part-time
basis. Approximately 3 percent
have already earned associate
degrees and approximately 5
percent hold bachelor degrees.
PE/Athletics Renovations
The passage of a $133.8 million
college district bond in 2002 has
resulted in the renovation of many
of Napa Valley College’s facilities
and the planning of new facilities.
Included are the new lighted
tennis courts to the west of the
gymnasium. In addition to regular
day, evening and weekend credit
tennis classes, the courts are host
to many events from NVC Tennis
Club sponsored activities to USTA
juniors tournaments and clinics.
The courts are also available to the
public when not scheduled for NVC
classes or activities.
The new North Gym opened over
Summer 2010 and is used for many
physical education, athletics, adaptive
PE and police academy classes
and activities. State-of-the-art equipment
is utilized by instructors and
professors.
NVC intercollegiate athletes
participating in the indoor sports
of volleyball and basketball and
in credit volleyball, basketball
new dimensions to the college
curriculum.
Napa Valley College celebrated
its sixtieth anniversary in 2002,
and continues to seek new
avenues of service to students
and the community. For example,
services and classes are being
offered and expanded in the
rapidly growing community of
American Canyon.
These statistics translate to NVC
classrooms which are enriched
by diversity. The college values
diversity in its student body,
faculty, staff and curriculum.
Individual differences are respected
and valued in all parts of the NVC
campus.
and badminton classes now enjoy
the benefits of the complete
gymnasium upper floor overhaul
completed six years ago. Bleachers,
the basketball/volleyball
courts-flooring system, the sound/
broadcast-system, the lobby and
rest rooms, the overhead lighting
and electrical systems all received
a complete face lift.
The volleyball team and men’s
and women’s basketball teams
and classes in basketball, volleyball
and badminton play on a
safer, new wooden flooring system
under brighter, more efficient new
lighting. In addition, the coaches’
offices were remodeled and the
interior repainted. Around our
Olympic-sized swimming pool, new
decking was put in place.
Other Changes
The new Library and and Learning
Resource Center and the
new Performing Arts Center (see
page 22) opened in fall 2010 to
resounding popularity. Remaining
bond projects underway include
the reassignment and design of
the old Library Building into a
new Administration Building and
the conversion of the current
Administration Building into a
Student Services Center.
Welcome to Napa Valley College and
the spring sports seasons. We are
excited about our entire sports program
and the direction that it is headed
under the leadership of a group of fine
coaches. Jim Wiechers, a highly respected
golf veteran, is heading our men’s golf
program. Michelle Hobbs, entering her
sixth season at the helm, is leading our
women’s softball team. Bob Freschi, who
has built a very solid program, is the
men’s baseball skipper. Each team looks
to be solid and ready to compete well
in their respective conferences. Softball and baseball
will play in the Bay Valley Conference, and golf will
compete in The Big Eight Conference. All of the spring
sports teams have opened their seasons and look to be
competitive in their conferences.
The competition is a vital part of the educational
process for our student-athletes, and it provides
a component for growth and maturity that is unique
in the educational structure. We believe that it is our
job to help our student-athletes develop on the court,
on the course and on the fields. It is also our job to
help them see their potential in a field of study or a
profession and to understand their duties as citizens.
We are proud that many of our student-athletes take
advantage of the opportunities that our program and
our institution provide. Many of our student athletes
transfer to four-year institutions to continue their
studies, and many continue their playing careers.
This past fall ten of our sophomore athletes earned
Bay Valley Conference academic honors. They all
maintained over a 3.0 grade point average during
their years of competition at NVC. The honorees are
volleyball players Nicole Bickham, Christina
players Bryan Aguilera, Joel Ng and Luis
Orozco; women’s basketball players Jordan
Price and Kelsey Zeller; and, men’s basketball
players Paul Dugoni and Rosevelt Smith.
These athletes have balanced academics and
athletics in a way that sets an example for all
athletes.
Napa Valley’s athletic program would
be unable to compete effectively
and accomplish our academic mission
without the continued support of the
college administration, staff and faculty. And, the
community support has been vital in the ongoing
facility improvement. In order to compete effectively
and to continue to build our programs it truly takes
a team effort, and we in the athletic department are
very appreciative of the support that we receive from
so many areas. On October 14 we will once again host
The Storm Classic Golf Tournament, this year at the
Eagle Vines Golf Club. It has been a very successful
fundraiser for our program, and many individuals and
businesses have helped to make the success possible.
We invite you to join us this year. In addition, we will
host our inaugural Napa Valley College Athletic Hall of
Fame on October 1 at Embassy Suites.
Despite California’s dire budget situation, the
Athletic Department and the Physical Education
division members are optimistic about the future. Some
very good things are happening in athletics at Napa
Valley College. We are looking forward to continuing to
work with all members of the Napa Valley College and
Napa Valley teams to serve the student/athletes and to
make all of our programs the best that they can be.
The Napa Valley College Storm Baseball Team and Coaches
thank the many Spring Program advertisers who have offered
their support. We encourage you to consider their products
and services.

Athletic program benefits from fund-raiser
About 75 golfers
participated in the 5th Annual
Storm Golf Classic at Silverado
Resort and Country Club on
June 9. Nearly $8,000 was
raised according to Sonia
Wright, Foundation executive
director, and Kevin Luckey,
dean of Athletics and Physical
Education.
The funds play a vital role in
maintaining a quality athletic
program.
The tournament has become
a true showcase for the spirit
of our community. Our student
athletes are on the course, at
the check-in table, and helping
with the auction.
Next year’s tournament will
be October 14, 2011. The event
will be hosted by Eagle Vines
Bob Freschi
Head Coach Baseball
Head baseball coach Bob Freschi
enters his tenth season as the
skipper of the Storm. "Skip"
entered the fray as an adjunct
coach and instructor in 2002,
and was hired full-time and
permanent at the end of the
season.
He brought a significant
resumé to NVC. In addition to
numerous support roles for a
wide variety of baseball venues,
he was assistant baseball coach
in charge of hitters, catchers,
outfielders and recruiting and
a general physical education
instructor at Cañada College
from Aug. 1997 to Aug. 2001.
In 2000, Coach Freschi was
a Stanford Baseball Camps
instructor, assisting coaches in
organizing and coordinating
baseball camps.
From 1994 to 1996, he was a
European Envoy baseball coach
serving Major League Baseball
International. Acting as coach
for the Slovakia National team.
He conducted instructional
camps and clinics in several
European countries and was
heavily involved in activities
designed to market and promote
the game of baseball for all ages.
“Every year, we look to compete
at a high level in the BVC,
performing better each season.
Our staff strives to develop
players, successfully transfer our
student athletes to the four-year
level and to have fun,” notes
Coach Freschi.
In 2004, Coach Freschi was
awarded Coach of the Year for
the Bay Valley Conference.
Season Outlook: "We are
putting an emphasis on pitching,
defense and timely hitting to
move the Storm forward this
season," says Coach Freschi.
If we maximize our ability to
throw strikes consistently and
play a high level of catch, we will
prove to be very competitive
this season." Coach states that
"The 2011 Storm is a young team
with only seven sophomores
Warren Brusstar
Pitching Coach
Paul Freitas
Assistant Coach
returning. We are looking for
these freshmen to mature as
players, develop as athletes
and get acclimated to college
baseball.
"We are counting on our seven
sophmores to produce and
to lead the Storm, led by Paul
Sciacca, Tyler Kozlowski, Joel
Moreno, Michael Crandell, Sean
Viratos, Robin Groom and Ryan
Wagner.
"We have a great core freshman
group led by Jordan Grubbs,
James McLemore, Andrew
Ratterman and Ben Monroe.
"The pitching staff is comprised
of twelve frosh and one
sophomore so we will be
learning on the fly and anticipate
steady improvement
"We will be a contact hitting club
that has the ability to run. The
Storm will be an aggressive team
willing to take advantage of that
speed.
"All in all, the Storm will produce
a competitively exciting season!"
Pitching Coach Brusstar begins
his fifth year with the Storm. He
played with the NVC baseball
team in the seventies and was
awarded a scholarship to Fresno
State University. He added
substantial baseball credits to
his resume by playing 15 years
of pro ball including nine with
The Show with the Philadelphia
Phillies, Chicago Cubs and
Chicago White Sox. He was
a member of the 1980 World
Series Championship Phillies
team. He believes pitchers and
players "...should hustle, play
hard and have fun." As to 2011,
"we've gotten better in the last
few years. We need to continue
that improvement. We should
be better this year as a team. We
have the same goal every year:
To win the BVC!"
Paul Freitas embarks on his
second year as a Storm assistant
coach. He is a former assistant
coach for Fairfield High School
and a coach for the 2000
championship. Coach Freitas
said, "This group looks strong to
me and I'm very excited to be a
part of the 2011 NVC Storm. The
boys have a good work ethic that
will enable us to put an exciting
brand of baseball on the field."
Bob "Pop" Freschi returns as an
all-around utility coach for his
eighth year following a two-year
hiatus. Welcome back, Coach!
Lino Garcia is also a second
year assistant coach. He comes
to the Storm with substantial
credentials: Nine years
professional baseball as an
outfielder with both the Arizona
Diamondbacks (A) and Colorado
Rockies Major League Baseball
organizations (AAA). He was
recognized as the D-Backs No. 6
prospect in 2002; he participated
in major league spring training
camp (2001-2004); and he was
invited to play Midwest League
All-Star Game (2002) and the
Golden Baseball Leagues All-Star
Game in 2007. Coach Garcia
won the Golden Glove Award in
2002 with a .914 fielding record
and in 2006 with a .922 fielding
record. More recently, he was
the key offensive player for the
Tucson Toros inaugural season
where the Toros captured the
49 RBIs and 22 stolen bases
in only 66 games. Originally
seasons in the Venezuela Winter
Coach Garcia states, "Although
my professional coaching
experience is limited, I am
passionate about the sport and
sharing my skills and experience
with other talented players to
enable their advancement in the
game of baseball."
As to how he will approach his
role with the Storm, he says,
"Baseball is my passion and I
believe that when the love for
the game is as strong as mine,
success follows with hard work
and motivation. My goal is to use
my professional experience, my
mistakes and accomplishments
to help other players move
Brian Houle is returning to the
2 Joel Moreno
Sophomore Joel Moreno comes to the
Storm from Hogan High School and Coach
Damien Neves' program. A Sociology major,
this 175 pound, 6-foot right-hander will be
guarding the left field hole as he takes up
the position of shortstop. Transfer options
are open–USC,UCLA, NYU,..."anywhere that
wants me." He cites a major athletic highlight
as "spending the last two years at Napa
Valley College and having the opportunity to
continue playing baseball after high school."
He thanks his parents "for always encouraging
me to continue playing..." and he plans "...to
continue playing baseball as long as possible,
and maybe one day get drafted." He's also a
fan of the S.F. Giants and a Double Double from
In-N-Out Burgers.
Coach Freschi notes: J-Mo started with the
Storm as a redshirt sophomore who is making
the transition this year from second base to
shortstop. He's magical with the glove and
has a great bat! Looking for him to provide
leadership for this young Storm team!
3 Robin Groom
Stepping into the Storm staff as a six-foot
right-hander, Robin Groom is Vintage High
School product, having played for Rich
Anderson. He is a business transfer major.
His favorite ball team is the S.F. GTiants, and
he has tremendous respect for former Giant
Barry Bonds and World Series Champion Tim
Lincecum. Robin identifies being a starting
pitcher during a game played at the River
Cats stadium in Sacramento as a major sports
experience. On his life's bucket list he would
like to have a photograph of his execution
published by the photography benchmark
magazine, National Geographic. More than just
tongue-in-cheek, his favorite quote:
"What are my Chances?"
"Not good."
"Not good like one out of a hundred?"
"I'd say more like one out of a million..."
"So you're tell me there's a chance!"
That's how dreams are realized!
Coach Freschi says: "Robin has the ability
to be tough to hit when he locates his
pitches, and he has a great cut fastball. He
also provides maturity and leadership to the
pitching staff!"
4 Michael
Crandell
Returning to his position
between the batter and umpire,
sophomore Michael Crandell will
bring experience from last year's
freshman outing with the Storm
and Todd Pridy's Napa High School
program. At 195 lbs. and 5'9",
he will bat from the left side of
the plate. Michael has baseball
kudos aplenty: MEL Catcher of the
Year; 2009 MEL Champs; 2009
All-County First Team; 2009 Napa
American Legion area champs,
advancing to the state tournament.
He played for Top Speed during
their record season of 50-9. Also
playing first base, Michael brings
his role model's philosophy to the
game: "My Dad is hard-working
and he is persistent!" A transfer
student, Mike plans to become
a sports historian, a baseball
coach and plans to play baseball
"...as long as I can." He gives a
nod to the East Bay, identifying
the Oakland Athletics as his favorite baseball team. He embraces the
challenge of Ted Williams' quote: "Hardest thing to do in sports...hit a
round ball with a round bat and try to hit square." He also thinks Field
of Dreams is a great movie (he's not alone in that thought!) and his
favorite food is one of those awesome sandwiches from the Brown's
Valley Market Deli.
Coach Freschi relates: Michael is not only an outstanding baseball
player; he is also a terrific student athlete. He is the epitome of what
forms the foundation of NVC Baseball: Academics, Athletics and Great
People!
5 Jordan Grubbs
Mounting the hill as a right-handed
hurler, freshman Jordan Grubbs
joins the Storm from Justin-Siena
High School's program under the
generalship of Coach Scott Wright.
A Sports Management major, Jordan
At Justin, Jordan was named MVP his
and Pitcher of the Year his junior year.
He was also named Napa Valley Pitcher
of the Year as a junior and Napa
Valley Player of the Year his senior
year. Peyton Manning is an athletic
role model for Jordan "...because he
plays the game right." His Dad figures
as his life role model. "He provides
a great example for me." Jordan's
favorite root-for team is the San
Francisco Giants, and manages to not
crack a smile when citing his favorite
quote, from football great coach, Vince
Lombardi: "If winning isn't everything,
why do they keep score?" He likes
the movie Step Brothers and is a
connoisseur of the In-N-Out menu.
Coach Freschi: Jordan is an extremely
talented athlete. He is a strike thrower
with three pitches. He has a bright
future at NVC as a Storm starter.
Jordan also plays the outfield and has
great speed.
Ryan Wagner is a right-handed sophomore
from Bear Creek High School where he
played for coach John Stevenson. He's
going to take care of the second bag and
spend some time on the mound. At 170
strong contribution to the team. After NVC
he hopes to transfer to a four-year college
ultimately targeting a Bachelor's degree
in Criminal Justice. As a senior he received
Offensive Player of the Year for SJAA; First
Team All-League and All-Area Shortstop for
SJAA. He is inspired by Oakland Athletics
second baseman Mark Ellis "...because he
always works hard and plays the game the
right way!" He identifies his last year of
high school and "the last two years here at
NVC as a part of the Storm System..." as
personal athletic highlights. He favors the
Oakland Athletics and likes Kevin Durant's
quote, "Hard work beats talent, when the
talent doesn't work hard." He also gives
Saving Private Ryan high marks, likes the
Zac Brown Band and Squeeze Inn.
The Skipper says: Wags is a hard-nosed
player who will be the starter second
baseman as well as a relief pitcher. When
he is not playing Call of Duty, we will call
his number quite often!
7 Paul Sciacca
Armijo High School graduate Paul Sciacca takes his
place at third base this season. Playing for Mike Singer
at Armijo, this sophomore throws right-handed and
bats left-handed. At 5'11" and 165 lbs. Paul will also
be taking a spot in the bull pen as a right-handed
pitcher. He sees Sacramento State University in his
transfer future where he will finish his degree as a
Social and Behavioral Sciences major. High on his list
of athletic highlights is a crop of home runs. Helping
shape his future is identification with Derek Jeter as a
primary role model, who is "...a class act both on and
off the field." Paul greatly appreciates Joe DiMaggio's
famous quote about his Paul's favorite team: "I want
to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee." He
likes the band Avenged Sevenfold and prefers In-N-
Out's 4x4 with animal fries.
Coach Freschi: Paul is a gifted player who can flatout
hit! We're looking for great things from Paul this
season!
8 Sean Viratos
This sophomore joined the
Storm from Don Lyons'
program at Sonoma Valley
High School. Sean Viratos is
bringing 180 lbs. and five feet
10 1/2 inches of hustle to the
right field. This right-hander
received a defensive MVP nod
in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2006,
and was named to Sonoma
County League All-League
team in 2008. He likes the
San Francisco Giants and
reminds us that Vidal Sassoon
had it right: "The only time
success comes before work
is in the dictionary." Sean's
favorite food: "Sushi!" End of
discussion. He looks to favorite
movies Get Him to the Greek,
How High and Half Baked for
down-time entertainment. He
also likes a Tribe Called Quest.
Coach Freschi: I see Sean as being a major competitor and contributor to the
2011 Storm season. He is an outfielder who has a great arm with good range.
9 Blake Boehlke
Long and lanky, freshman pitcher
Blake Boehlk is a Sonoma Valley High
School graduate attending NVC as a
Science major. His athletic highlight
comes from a single game where he
struck out 18, stole home and hit a
home run. "Still lost, but who cares?
That was off the chain!" He admires
Satchel Paige: "He played 'til he was
like 40, throwing 100 mph and going
complete games; Beast!" Blake "...
lives for the moment but I work
hard at making things turn out for
the best." He like the San Francisco
Giants, Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas and Caddyshack ... and the
Jimi Hendrix Experience. Oh, yes–and
Calzone!
The Skipper says: Blake has a
bright future as a starter or possible
middle reliever this year. He's starting
to really develop as a pitcher!
10 Matt Bejar
A six-foot tall and 205 pound
freshman coming to Napa
Valley College from Vintage
High School and Coach Cam
Neal's program, Matt is a
right-hander who will stake
out first base and will provide
depth for the bull pen. A
Viticulture major, he will
continue his studies at UC
Davis. He was Napa County
Pitcher of the Year in 2008
and led Vintage High School
to its first playoff appearance
in 13 years. He was also
All-County First Team in 2008.
He plans to use his drive and
determination to succeed in
every aspect of life. He admires
the 2010 World Champions,
the San Francisco Giants,
and a movie quote, which is
race car driver Reese Bobby's
advice to his son Ricky in
Talladega Nights: "If you're
not first, you're last!" Matt
likes Pineapple Express, The
Ojays and enjoys the culinary
potential of Hamburger Helper.
Coach Freschi says: Matt is a
hard worker who will provide
us with quality depth in the bull pen.
joining the Storm bull pen. He played on his high school All-Star Team. "My role model
is my mother, for trying her hardest and never giving up." He's a Giants fan and like the
quote, "I have a dream." His favorite musical group is Young Morely, his favorite movie is
Troy and he likes chicken fried steak.
Coach Freschi: Shanniel is a right-handed pitcher who throws strikes and will be used as
a short reliever!
his major studies. A member of the Joe Dimaggio All-Tournament Team, he identifies his
parents as his role models and wants to play baseball at the four-year college where
he finishes digital design degree. He'd love to work at Pixar. Cole favors the Oakland
A's as his main team. His favorite phrase, "Play like a champion," surely guides him in
life as well as in baseball. He likes the film Summer Catch and listens to Tech N9ne. He's
probably eating his favorite food, popcorn, while watching and/or listening.
Coach Freschi: Cole will be a major contributor to our bull pen and will be helping us
Robert Ojala, a freshman coming to us from Todd Pridy's program at Napa High School, will spend time divided between
shortstop and second base. A six-foot one-inch freshman, Robert is a Business major planning to transfer to San Diego State
University or California State University, Chico. His athletic highlight is admirable: "Staying in playing shape, avoiding injuries."
Cole looks to "My Dad as my role model; he has
taught me everything I know. Now I try to live
up to his memory." Cole's life goals will surely
honor that memory: "To be successful in life; to
always be happy no matter what situation life
brings me." He likes the movie Four Brothers,
eats cheeseburgers and French fries and likes the
Oakland Athletics. His favorite phrase, probably
derived from the Southern California surfing
world, can be applied to just about every aspect of
sports and life: "Go big, or go home!"
Coach Freschi: Bob is the most improved player
of the fall. A dirtbag type player who will play
shortstop and second base. He has a great arm!
15 Tyler Kozlowski
Business Administration major Tyler
Kozlowski will be guarding the left side
of the deep field for the Storm. A righthanded
sophomore, Tyler is an El Molino
High School graduate where he played
for Rick Tackala. A San Francisco Giants
fan, his favorite saying is Duck the
Fodgers ... said very, very carefully. He
likes the flic, Step Brothers, and listens
to Country recording artist Jason Aldean.
He also likes to patronize Squeeze In
Burger.
Coach says: Koz rejoins the Storm after
taking the 2010 season off. He will be
instrumental in the Storm's success this
year! He will bat fourth and will provide
a quick bat for the Storm.
17 Andrew
Ratterman
Ranging between left and center
fields, left-handed Andrew Ratterman
is a lanky six-foot one-inch Education/
History major who plans to move on
to a four-year university. He played for
Sergio Martinez at Dixon High School
before heading West to join the Storm.
He batted 400-plus as a junior and
senior and his summer team took third
in the Joe Dimaggio World Series. He
reveres "Barry Bonds, because he was a
Giant and was the best ever." Andrew
looks forward to playing baseball "for as
long as I can, and then start a family."
He's entertained by the 2004 movie
Collateral, and when he's not practicing
on the field, likes to eat BBQ chicken
wings. Al Davis says it all for Andrew:
"Just win, baby!"
Coach Freschi notes: Ratt is a hard
working competitor; he's got a great
perspective of what he wants as a
baseball player. The sky is the limit for
Andrew, and we were look for great
things from him!
20 Nate Waschuck
Helping to develop the breadth and depth
of the Storm bull pen, right-handed pitcher
freshman pitcher Nate Waschuck is a Cam
Neal product from Vintage High School.
A Communications major, Nate's looking
at Sacramento State, Cal-Poly, Pomona
and Sonoma State University to complete
his studies. One of his proudest athletic
achievements was a 3 1/3 inning no-hitter
against Vintage rival Will C. Wood High
School, nailing six strike-outs and no
earned runs. Nate holds New Orleans Saints
quarterback Drew Brees in high regard "...
because he has accomplished good things
on and off the field." Nate's accademic
and professional goals include getting
his Bachelor's degree in Communications
followed by a Master's degree in Business.
Oakland A's are his Main Team and he
embraces John Wooden's comment,
"Winning and losing doesn't matter. Put
forth your best effort and that's all you can
ask." He also likes the movie Friday Night
Lights and Italian food.
Coach Freschi states: Nate will provide
the bull pen with depth. He is very
knowledgeable in all sports and has a true
love of the game of baseball.
21 Robert Covarrubias
Another player coming to the Storm from
Stockton's A.A. Stagg High School and
Coach Victor Sanchez's program, Robert
Covarrubias is another right-hander helping
develop bull pen depth. At six-feet threeinches,
he's going going to come off the hill
to the plate like a 'Storm.' He is currently
a general education major exploring his
options. He points at a one-hitter and
14 strike-outs as one of his peak athletic
experiences to date. Robert reveres his
parents as his top role models. "They are
a big part of my success." He plans on
adding to that success with a four-year
college degree and a successful career. He's
a fan of Friday Night Lights and likes the
statement, attributed to place-kicker and
four-time Super Bowl ring holder Adam
Vinatieri, "To be the best, you've got to
beat the best." The rest of the actual quote
includes, "That's all there is to it." Oh, yes...
Robert also lists pizza as a favorite culinary
indulgence.
Coach Freschi states: Covo has a
tremedous upside as a right-handed pitcher.
He has a bright future at NVC as a starting
pitcher who has an excellent drop ball.
23 Corey Dillon
Another weapon added to the
Storm's bull pen arsenal, southpaw
Corey Dillion brings his game to
the mound from Clear Lake High
School where he played for Brian
Figg. He is a five foot eleven inch
Administration of Justice major who
threw three no-hitters as a high
school hurler. When he completes
his academic education, he plans to
embark on another steep learning
curve – as a California Highway
Patrol officer. Corey likes the Atlanta
Braves, the movie The Hangover,
and a quote originally attributed to
Steve Martin as a comeback to a
concert heckler in the 80s, but is also
noted in the movie Step Brothers:
"I remember when I had my first
beer." Corey also likes an East Coast
delight, Philly Cheese Steak.
Skip says: Corey has a very good
arm and will see plenty of time on
the bump as the only lefty on the
staff. He has a great curve ball and
good velocity!
22 Benjamin Wayne
Monroe
A freshman coming over from Vintage High
School who redshirted for the Storm last year,
right-handed pitcher Ben Monroe is a solid
six-foot one-inch hurler who was Pitcher of the
Year his sophomore year at Vintage. In response
to who his role model in life might be, his
answer is simple and straightforward: "Dad."
Something of a rebel in Northern California, his
favorite team is the LA Dodgers and he likes
the Mark Beltaire comment, "Baseball is almost
the only place in life where a sacrifice is really
appreciated." He also likes Academy Award
Best Picture nominee, Best Visual Affects winner,
Inception, and Chinese food ranks at the top of
his list of chow-down preferences.
Coach Freschi: Ben has worked very hard
to perfect his pitching. He is developing as a
pitcher who will be very instrumental to the
Storm's pitching staff as either a starter or a
long reliever!
24 Louie Alvarez
Six-feet two-inches and 215 pounds
of force joins the Storm as a third
and first bagger. A freshman fresh
from Todd Pridy's Napa High School
program, Louie Alvarez is a general
education major who is looking at
Chico State, University of Oregon and
Oregon State as possible transfer
destinations. He has looked to his
Dad for life-guidance: "If it were
not for him, who knows where I
would be?" He looks forward to a
four-year institution and hopes for
the opportunity to continue playing
baseball. Louie is another S.F. Giants
and In-N-Out fan...and he likes the
movie, The Town.
Coach Freschi observes: Lou is
a big physical kid who brings a
toughness to the Storm! Lou is a
player will play third and first and
who can swing it!
enjoyings playing the game!
25 Cory Hardesty
Looking to take his place behind the
plate, six-foot two-inch freshman
Cory Hardesty will pick off the
seccond base steal as a righthanded
catcher. A graduate of East
Union High School where he played
for Coach Dan Triglia, Cory is an
Engineering major with eyes on Cal
Poly San Louis Obispo but remains
open-minded for other opportunities.
His junior year team went to the
State Championships for their HS
division. He reveres his neighbor
"Because he taught me to become a
catcher and everything I know about
baseball." Cory embraces every true
athlete's dream–to play the game
for the rest of his life. A fan of the
Boston Red Sox and Mel Gibson's The
Patriot, he goes back a few decades
for musical enjoyment, citing Def
Leopard as a favorite; he likes pasta
and bread, and when he "Needs a
moment–Chew it over with Twix."
Skipper's observation: Cory is
campaigning for the catching job.
He's a hard-nosed, tough kid who
28 James McLemore
Another transplant from Stockton, this
time from Coach Payler Pijl's St. Mary's
High School baseball program, freshman
James McLemore adds more depth to the
already dynamic bull pen. A right-handed
pitcher and Business major, James played
in the section championship for St.
Mary's. In 2006 he was TCAL First Team
All-League Catcher of the Year. Giants
pitcher Matt Cain figures as a top athletic
role model: "He does his job consistently;
he gets it done!" As for getting it done,
James plans to enter fire-fighting service
following completion of his Bacherlor's
degree in Business. Liking Matt Cain, it's
not a stretch that his favorite team is the
Giants. His favorite quote, interestingly, is
not from his favorite move, which is Fight
Club. It's from Supertroopers: "I don't
want a large farva. I want a blinketyblank
liter o'cola!" When James is not
listening to August Burns Red he might
be found eating something Chipotle
flavored...or maybe at the same time.
Coach Freschi says: Mac will be asked
to close games! He has a great personality, and he knows how to handle
tough, adverse situations!
26 Max Dodson
Coming to Napa Valley College from
Stockton where he played baseball for
Coach Ryan Murray at Lincoln High
School, Max Dodson will be patroling
the outfield. A Business major, will
transfer to a four-year institution
following a bit of investigation. He
remembers two years playing for
a semi-pro baseball league as an
athletic high mark and notes that his
brother is a significant role model
for him: "He is very accomplished,"
which leads to his own life's goals
– to "Become accomplished at
everything I do." Guns and Roses, the
San Francisco Giants and anything
Chipotle help keep him entertained
when he's not playing baseball. And
for life in general, "Just do it!"
Coach Freschi: Max is our utility
guy who is solid in all aspects of the
game!
29 Adam Timmons
Six-feet three and a half inches of right-handed
concentration, freshman Adam Timmons will
be extending the bull pen presence. Adam
is another local lad, hailing from Napa High
School and Coach Todd Pridy's diamond. He
is a History major looking forward to Chico
State. An athletic highmark was when he "Got
invited to join a team going to play in the Joe
Dimaggio World Series in Carson City, NV, as
a pitcher." He models his life after his role
model father, "Because he taught me that life
doesn't always give you everything on a silver
platter, and that real men are able to overcome
adversity." Adam joins some of his teammates
as an Oakland Athletics fan. His favorite quote:
"No man for any considerable period can
wear one face to himself and another to the
multitude, without finally getting bewildered
as to which may be the true."–Nathaniel
Hawthorne. He likes Beethoven, The Dukes of
Hazard and homemade cuisine of one pound
bacon, Ranch dressing and avocado burger
accompanied by shrimp salad. Yum.
Skipper: Adam provides the Storm with
additional depth in the bull pen. He is a very
studious pitcher!
Zack Kalish is a Dixon High School graduate
who played for Sergio Martinez. Zack
redshirted the 2010 season and this year
will be playing opposite corners of the
diamond, at third and first. His academic
goals target a Social and Behaviorial Science
major which he will continue at the fouryear
college level. A five-foot, eleven-inch
right-hander, Zack was named to All-Capital
Valley Conference 2008-2009. His role-model
parents "...have supported me through
everything to reach my goals." He hopes to
play baseball as long as possible, and looks
forward to earning "...a great living." A part
of the Storm's Oakland A's informal fan club,
Zack's favorite quote stems from his favorite
movie, Bull Durham: "You have to play this
game with fear and arrogance," so sayith
Crash Davis! Zack likes the Zac Brown Band
and Italian food.
Coach Freschi notes: "Red" is a former
red shirt freshman who will be called on to
provide a spark to the Storm. He is a role
model by his relentless hard work!
32 Matt Barsetti
Another right-handed freshman who put on
the mask and pads behind the plate, Matt
Marsetti is a six-footer from Galt High School
where he played for Coach Keith Hodges.
He is a Social and Behavioral Science major
planning to transfer to Sacramento State.
Matt has a long list of accomplishments at
Galt: 2005 Galt High School Outstanding
Player; 2008 2nd Team SVC Conference All-
League. 2007 District 6 American Legion All-
Star Selection (from Galt Legion team). Matt
looks to the famous Pete 'Charlie Hustle'
Rose as an athletic role model: "He played
his hardest on every play and every inning."
His Dad is his life role model: "He's my friend
and mentor!" He anticipates "...playing
baseball at the highest level for as long
as possible and completing his Bachelors
degree." He follows his favorite team, the
Boston Red Sox, and embraces Pete Rose's
felling about baseball: "I'd walk through fire
in a gasoline suit to play baseball." Rambo
movies, chicken Chipotle burritos and 3
Doors down is where it's at for this catcher.
Coach Freschi tells us: Matt brings a powerful bat to the Storm. He will be
asked to be a run-producer, batting in the middle of the lineup. Also, look for
him behind the plate.
Coach Scott Wright of Justin-Siena
Redshirting for the Storm last year, he will
add his contribution from the mound. His
major at NVC is wrapped around Health
Occupations, the dynamic EMT Program
and ultimately a Fire Academy. Tony was
named to First Team All-League MCAL in
2007, First Team All-Napa County 2007 and
Second Team All-League MCAL in 2008. A
Dodgers fan all the way, his favorite quote
resounds from Tommy Lasorda: "No matter
how good you are, you're going to lose a
third of your games! No matter how bad
you are you are going to win a third of
your games. It's the other third that makes
the difference!" In addition, Matt like the
movie Pulp Fiction and "anything Italian."
Vista, and from 2001–2006 as varsity softball coach for
San Marcos High School, James Madison High School
in Claremont, Kearny High School and for Hamilton
City High School in Hamilton City. She began her first
collegiate head coaching gig for the Storm in 2006.
Last year, in off-season, she was head coach for 14 and
under travel ball, Team Xtreme. "After fall season, we
went 10-3 in three tournaments, earning a championship
and one runner-up position."
Coach Hobbs' reminds us that the Storm's overall
coaching, teaching and playing philosophy remains the
same: "We focus on refining skills and communication
during practices and within game play. We attack smart
pitches at the plate, keep the opposition's runs and
fielding opportunities to a minimum – and make it the
playoffs!"
Our goal this season is to continually emphasize the
mental game. The physical aspects tends to be easier for
this group. We plan to challenge their minds in game play
and to always be one step ahead of our opponent of the
day. We want to play heads-up ball and be both educated
and smart in all areas of softball!
Looking at the season, Coach Jones states: "My
goal as a Storm coach is to have our team focused
and ready to play every time we step on the
2 Pat Del Rosario
Sophomore outfielder Pat Del Rosario
played for Raja Woods at Jesse Bethel
High School. A Pre-Med major at NVC,
this ambidextrous switch-hitting dynamo
plans to transfer to either the University of
Hawaii or Hawaii Pacific University for the
next stage of her education.
She looks to her mom as her role model "...
because she has helped me with everything
for the last 20 years of my life." She will
graduate from medical school, she says,
and will live life with no regrets.
Coach Hobbs says: Pat brings quickness
to our team. She is aggressive at the
plate and is always looking to steal a bag.
Defensively, she has a strong arm and a
loud voice when calling down the ball. Her
leadership on and off the field helps guide
our team to success.
4 Anna Marie Scaduto
Five-feet nine-inches tall, Anna Marie Scaduto is
going to keep her eyes and glove ready to protect
center field this season. A right-handed freshman,
Anna Marie is a Criminal Justice Major planning
to transfer to Sacramento State University. A local
young woman, she graduated from Napa High
School where she played for Coach John "O"
O'Connor. She was named Most Inspirational
Player for Napa Valley Girls Fast Pitch Association
as well as Most Valuable Player for NVGFA, Most
Improved at Napa High School and All-County.
She looks up to her parents as her role-models.
Anna Marie plans to graduate with a Bachelor's
in Criminal Justice or a related field and become
a Police Officer.
What the Coach says: Anna Marie is a gamer!
She can't get enough of softball! She leads our
outfield in center and has cannon which fires
with accuracy. I look forward to many gun-outs
at the plate this season. At bat, she is confident
in reading the defensive field and hitting or
bunting it where the defense isn't. She has a powerful swing and a great eye for the
ball. Anna Marie is a confident base runner who never hesitates. Her confidence and
intensity are a real asset to the team. I love having her as a part of the Storm!
5 Bianca Camacho
Joining the deep-fence protective squad, freshman
right-hander Bianca Camacho will take a place
in the outfield. A five-foot three-inch player from
Buckingham Charter High School, her major is
Sports Medicine, which she will continue either
at CalPoly, San Luis Obispo, or California State
University, Fullerton. She plays the game and
attacks her studies guided by the philosophies
of her role model: "My father: his dedication,
determination and successfulness." Following
these precepts will be the best way to meet her
own personal goals, to "...become successful, and
be happy!"
Coach Hobbs: Bianca is a pleasure to have on
the team. She works hard and never gives up. In
the outfield, she has great direction recognition
on the ball and she attacks the ball confidently at
the plate. Bianca is constantly yearning for more
practice and knowledge, while always giving her
all. I can't imagine the team without her!
6 Colleen Clark
Taking the first bag, this freshman comes to
Napa Valley College by way of Armijo High
School where she played for Mark Nakatani. A
five-foot nine-inch right-hander, Colleen Clark
is a Business major who targets CalPoly, San
Luis Obispo, as her transfer goal. A powerhouse
with the stick, she admits one of her athletic
highlight memories is nailing two triples and a
double in a single game. Standing in the light as
her role model, she says "My mother is, because
she is the strongest person I know." With such
strength also comes the will to attain her own
goals: "To be successful and enjoy everything
in life."
Head Coach comments: Colleen has such a
relaxed swing, yet she is our power hitter this
season. She has an amazing eye for the ball
and appears very calm and confident in the
box. She is a solid first baseman who brings
communication and leadership to the infield.
7 Jessica Lothrop
A freshman fresh from Vintage High School,
Jessica Lothrop will help plug the left field
hole as she takes her spot at third. She's still
exploring her academic options as she takes
the field for the Storm. Her mom is her role
model "...because she's a very strong person."
Jessica looks forward to a degree in Child
Care.
Coach says: Jessica brings a solid bat to our
team. She has a natural swing and drives the
ball up the middle really well. Defensively,
her arm is accurate and she loves to get dirty
and make plays happen. She is a pleasure to
coach!
10 Mia Jones
A five-foot-four inch southpaw, Vintage High
School graduate Mia Jones will be alternating
between right field and first base. She is a
product of the Vintage program of Danielle
Priestey and Crystal Hamblin. She was named
as Most Improved and earned the Coach's
Award. Her major at Napa Valley College is the
relatively new Hospitality Program. She plans
to transfer to the Culinary Institute of America
where she plans to learn the ins and outs of
becoming a pastry chef; her professional goal
is to open up her own bakery. It could be said
that this is her mom's fault: "She is my role
model because she inspires me to follow my
dreams."
What Coach Hobbs says: Mia is such a hard
worker with a love for the game that radiates
from her. She always works hard and motivates
her team. I look to her for leadership in the
outfield. She is a heads-up base runner and
will take advantage of opponent's mistakes.
She is consistent in both the outfield and at
the plate. I am so glad she is a part of the Storm!
13 Paige Logan
Sophomore Paige Logan is working diligently
at her prerequisites for her X-Ray Technician
major which she will complete at a different
college. At five-feet eight-inches, this lanky
ambidextrous center fielder is a graduate of
Vintage High School and identifies her mom
and friends as role models in her life. She
plans to be successful and to live her life to
the fullest with no regrets.
Coach Hobbs observes: Paige is a co-team
captain this season. She has a strong whip of
an arm and she is never afraid to lay out for
a ball and make a diving play. She is quick on
the bases and runs with confidence. Paige is
one of our best bunters and uses her speed to
convert them into base hits.
15 Angelina Farias
Five foot three inch right-hander Angelina Farias
will be alternating between left and right fields.
She is a graduate of Rodriguez High School
and is a Register Nursing major who plans on
transferring to San Diego State University. Her
role model is "My Dad because no matter what
the situation, he has figured a way to come out
on top." And she shares the dream of just about
all of us: "Peace, happiness and true love."
Coach notes: Angie is a quick learner. She
has power in her swing and is an aggressive
base runner. She's never araid to slide or dive
back to a bag. Defensively, she has improved
tremednously. She is confident in being vocal
and will attack the ball in the outfield!
16 Melissa Santos
Freshman Melissa Santos comes to us
from Chula Vista High School and will
be moving around as a utility player
from second base, shortstop and stints
in the outfield. At four-feet eleveninches,
her strike zone is small and she
is quick. She played for Jackson Wyatt
at Chula Vista High and is a Registered
Nursing major who plans to return to
San Diego County to transfer to San
Diego State University. She was named
captain of her varsity softball team
and was awarded Most Inspirational
Player for her efforts. She looks to
her brother, Peter, as a role model
"...because he has shown me that
anything is possible, and to live every
day like it was the last." She is focused
on both today and the future, planning
"...to become a Registered Nurse, get
married and be successful with a happy
family."
Coach Hobbs observes: Melissa is a
confident bunter and base runner. She
brings speed and aggression to our team. She can play anywhere and
reacts very naturally to the ball in the outfield. She is a smart batter and
looks to take advantage of a pitcher's weaknesses. I'm excited to see
what she will do for us this season!
19 Rachel Gramlich
Four-foot eleven-inch second bagger and outfielder
Rachel Gramlich is a right-handed Vintage High
School product, playing for "Coaches Danielle
and Crystal." A General Education major while
she explores her academic options, she plans to
transfer to San Diego State University following
completion of her Napa Valley College studies. She
thanks her role model parents "...because they
give me the most suport."
The Coach says: Rachel brings versatility to our
team. She has a powerful and accurate arm from
both the outfield and infield. She's not afraid to
hack away at the plate and she is a joy to coach.
22 Lucinda 'Luie'
Knudson
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Luie
Knudson (she bats left-handed), is co-captain
of the Storm this season and is a player's
player who will help lead a crop of freshmen
through the season. A Political Science
major, Luie plans to take her studies to Notre
Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA,
following completion of studies at Napa
Valley College. A local product, Luie played
for Ward Mullins at Vintage High School. Her
athletic wall has a plethora of recognitions
including being named to the Bay Valley
Conference Second Team All-Conference
in 2010, Co-Best Defensive Player for NVC
2010, Kiwanis MVP 2008 and 2009, Kiwanis
Kathy Orchid Award for Most Inspirational
Player 2009, Best Offensive Player at Vintage
HS 2008 and 2009. And perhaps her best
accolade was as 2008 and 2009 Softball
Scholar-Athlete at Vintage. Her athletic and
academic performance reflects standards
demonstrated by her role mode, who is "...
my Dad, because he has a great work ethic
and encourages me to always do my best."
After NVC, Luie plans "To transfer to a
four-year university and play softball while
earning her Bachelor's degree in Poltical Science and then go to Law
School!"
Coach Hobbs: Co-team captain this season, Luie is an amazing pitcher
that leads by example. She throws six pitches consistently, with pin-point
accuracy. She is smart and always knows what to do with the ball when
she gets it. At the plate, she brings great opposite-field power from the left
side, along with an accurate eye for the ball. She is a coach's dream and
always gives more than what is expected of her.
24 Morgan Aiello
Freshman catcher Morgan Aiello
played for Donna Tafft at Lincoln High
school where she was named Most
Improved Player in 2007 and earned
the Coach's Award in 2008. Pursuing
general studies at NVC, right-handed,
five-foot six-inch Morgan will also
rotate to third base. She's hoping for
a scholarship to a four-year college
or university as a result of her studies
and play at Napa Valley College.
Coach Hobbs states: Morgan brings
solid defense to the plate. She has
a strong arm and is a smart and
knowledgeable player. Her swing
appears effortless and she can hit
well from both sides of the plate.
She has flawless bunting form and is
motivated to work hard and succeed.

Head Coach
Jim Wiechers
The Storm’s Jim Wiechers
is head coach for both the
women’s and men’s golf
teams, the men playing the
links in spring. Coach Wiechers
capped a 13-year career as a
PGA Touring pro by assuming
the responsibilities for the NVC
intercollegiate golfers.
His coaching philosophy
embraces improvement in all
his players, both physically
and mentally, as each season
progresses.
The Storm golf teams are allowed
to participate in the Big Eight
Conference insofar as the Bay
Valley Conference does not
participate in intercollegiate
golf. The Big Eight, as its name
The 2011 Storm
Men's Golf 2011
implies, is composed of much
larger schools that draw from
a greater pool of players than
would be the case if the BVC
competed in golf. Consequently,
the competition is a true
challenge for all participants.
Season Outlook: The vagaries of
college athletics led to a winterchange
almost overnight. While
the Storm will be competitive
this year and will field a team
of six, the season started with
twelve players, six of whom had
to withdraw for solid reasons.
We anticipate sending three of
four to the NorCal playoffs again
this year.
Todd Nalley joins the team as a
first-time Storm Assistant Coach
From Left: Head Coach Jim Wiechers, Brian Coloma, Alex Peterson, Justin
Brian Coloma Brandon Lloyd Duncan
Playing for Larry Miller at Jesse Bethel High School, sophomore
Brian Coloma is a five-foot nine-inch right-handed golfer who plans
to transfer to Sacramento State for his Physical Therapy degree. His
long-term goals include being successful in life and being able to
provide for this parents. His Dad is his main role model "...because
he plays many sports, like I do today, and he motivates me to try
harder." He attributes being an assistant golf coach his senior year of
high school as being a high-water mark for his athletic career so far.
Coach Wiechers: Brian is working hard in learning and improving his
golf game. This diligence will cause him to improve continuously as
the season progresses.
2011 Men's Golf Schedule
Vintage High School golfer Brandon Duncan played for Jim Costan
and comes to the Storm as a Sports Science major. He plans to
transfer to Sacramento State University after finishing his studies at
NVC. A five-foot eight-inch right-handed NVC freshman, Brandon
was named All-MEL three years at Vintage. He reveres "...my Dad,
because he has taught me everything I know."
Coach Wiechers: Brandon will start the year as our number one
player. He had a great career at Vintage High School. He has all the
talent in the world and continues to work on his skills and selfconfidence.
He will be in the hunt for All-Conference.
Jeston Mitchell
Jeston 'JJ' Mitchell swings a long golf club at six-feet five-inches. This
NVC freshman played golf for Rodriguez High School and for coach
Rick Bryan. To date, his peak athletic experiences have been on the
golf course, playing as a high school team golfer, as well as playing
in other golf tournaments. His role model parents "...support me in
everything I do." It's pretty certain he's going to achieve his life goals
of "...succeeding in whatever I attempt."
Coach Wiechers: JJ is a solid player who joins the Storm following an
outstanding high school career. He also will be in the NorCal playoff
hunt this season.
Mark your calendars now
Alex Peterson
Another local player, six-foot
four-inch freshman Alex Peterson
comes to the Storm from Vintage
High School where he played golf
for Jim Costan. A Business major,
Alex is targeting Sacramento State
University or California State
University, Chico, as his transfer
destination.
Coach Wiechers: Alex is a player
who will improve throughout the
season. He was a valuable member
of the Vintage High School team
last year, and I expect him to be
just as valuable as Storm team
member.
The annual Golf Classic is a fun way to help student athletes
take the next step in their academic and educational careers.
Justin Salum
Sophomore Justin Salum comes to
Napa from De Anza High School where
he played for John Myers. A five foot
seven inch right-handed golfer, John is
majoring in Liberal Arts/Advertising
and plans to transfer to the Academy
of Art University. A significant
golf highlight was qualifying as an
individual player entry in the North
Coast Section tournament (NCS) at
Las Positas Golf Course. He likes the
great golfer "Tiger Woods [before the
scandals] for two reasons: He was the
best at what he did, and he was highly
respected not just in golf." Justin's aim
in life is to "...support my family and
keep them happy."
Coach Wiechers: Justin is a wonderful
player. He should definitely figure in the
running for All-Conference this year as
he battles with Brandon for the number
one slot.
(707) 253-3222
Six-foot zip-inches Kolby Thomas
is a freshman emerging from
Vanden High School where he
played golf for Juan Guzman. He
focuses his life's goals on studying
Criminal Justice and playing golf.
He looks at Byron Esterling as an
athletic role model, who is "...a
golf mentor who has helped me
improve."
Coach Wiechers: Kolby has as
great swing and is capable of
good golf. He will be working on
his skills and self-confidence this
season as he challenges himself
with the team and on the golf
course."

Solar field provides
much of NVC’s electricity
The Napa Valley College solar array
was one of the first projects completed
through the financial auspices of the Bond
Measure N, passed in 2002 by the Napa
Valley community, and a significant grant
from PG&E. Dedicated on Feb. 22, 2006,
the array is spread over 6.5 acres with 5,600
solar tracking panels built by PowerLight
Corporation. Capable of generating about
1.2 megawatts, the array generates enough
electricity to power 1,200 homes. Savings
in electrical usage range between $300,000
and $400,000 dollars annually. At the time
it was built it was the fifth largest such array
in the United States and the largest in Napa
County.
Over the 30-year life of the photovoltaic
system it is estimated that the solar
generated electricity will reduce emissions
of carbon dioxide by 13,800 tons. This is
equivalent to planting over 130 acres of
trees, removing 2,700 cars from California’s
highways, or not driving 35 million miles.
New buildings constructed with funds
from Measure N were designed to have
as much natural light as possible, thereby
reducing electric light use during the day.
These and other green features can be
readily seen in the new McCarthy Library
on the south end of campus and the new
Life Science Building just west of the
Library.
Chiller Plant helps the
campus keep its cool
A new state of the art Central Chiller
Plant was completed in October 2007. A
local firm, Bell Products, Inc., helped put
the $7.2 million cooling plant online. This
green project includes a two story building
which houses cooling towers and pumps.
The facility is used to create one million
pounds of ice at night, while electricity
rates are lowest, and then distributes
chilled water to campus buildings for
cooling during daytime hours. Daytime
pumping is solar powered thanks to the
college’s photovoltaic field.
