sunday afternoon ramble18 August 2013 – The day dawned at about 8 o’clock looking like it had some potential, butthat didn’t last long as it started to rain before I could finish my morning coffee. But with theonly other option being to watch the wife’s recordings of shows like Fashion Police suddenly theweather didn’t look so bad. After an early lunch the TC21 was readied and off I went.Upon arrival at the clubrooms I was pleasantly surprised to find 14 other cars had bravedthe wet weather conditions and some were even full of passengers. Some of the noteworthycars was a 1922 Essex, a 48 Jaguar, a 53 Alvis, a 51 London taxi cab and four Drop Heads, all withtheir tops up.After receiving our instructions we set out on our adventure. It was a leisurely drive exceptfor the written quiz which required close attention to the surroundings in order to answer thequestions. The run took us out through Taradale, past the EIT, over the bridge and through thecountryside to Fernhill, along Highway 50, past the Bridge Pa aerodrome, along Maraekakahothrough Hastings and back to the clubrooms where a nice cup of tea and a slice of banana cakewas waiting for us.The winner of the quiz was Larry and Shona Freemantle with yours truly coming in dead last. Thanks to Mark Jenkinson for organising the run.Our best wishes go to Derek Gordon who is off to get his “carburettor” fixed. We wish him aspeedy recovery.Kevin SweenyREQUEST FOR VEHICLESHawke’s BayA & P Show23rd – 25th OctoberWairoaA & P Show19th January 2014To celebrate 150th Anniversary they arelooking for cars to represent each decadefrom 1900. AGM of the vcc of nz (inc)This was held on the 17th August 2013 at Riccarton Park, Christchurch, attended by some120 members/delegate with our branch represented by Steve Donovan and myself. As arelatively new member of the club, it gave me an insight as to the overall workings of theorganisation and how it all fits together. There were the usual presentations of various reports, discussions as a result of thosereports, presentation of badges to four life members, election of officers (including the newClub Captain – Northern Region, Paul Collins from North Shore) together with general business. One issue that I believe has been raised at previous meetings was that of the “ageing of existingmembers” and the need to attract younger members. This also carried over into discussion re apossible name change and the impact of the word “vintage” on potential members. The weekend also included a sightseeing trip around Christchurch on the Saturday afternoon, where despite the rain and cold wind we were able to view firsthand the devastation as a resultof the earthquake. While we haveall seen the news presentations, tostand in front of the Cathedral andsee what can only be described as abomb-site up close brings the realityof the forces of nature home. Wewere also taken to the CanterburyBranch Clubrooms and Spares shedwhich, like Hawke’s Bay, is set in apark, and is well set up to cater fortheir members.Overall an interesting weekendand a great insight into the VCCoperation.Ian Elmsly10

23rd National motorcycle rallyIn February of this year I travelled to Whangarei for the 23rd National Motorcycle Rally. I wasthe only entrant from Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne even managed two entrants. The total number of bikes was 98, including a Dutch entrant and several Australians and aCanadian. The Rally started with a great Friday night get-together. The competitive rally started at 9amon Saturday with bikes leaving at one minute intervals from the centre of the city. A supporters’van followed the rally which covered 100 miles with a gymkhana at Ngungaru before we hadlunch.Saturday night dinner followed with a guest speaker. On Sunday there was a bike display forthe public then a non-competitive run to the Marsden Point Oil Refinery followed by a greatlunch and then we returned to Rally Headquarters (70 miles). On Sunday night the dinner and prizegiving was held at the Kamo Club. On Monday I headedback to Napier but there was a four-day tour to Cape Reinga and back to Whangarei. The Rally was brilliantly organised with competitors from all over New Zealand, including atea of 20 bikes and riders from Canterbury and good numbers from other South Island centres. Now, what I am proposing is that in February 2015 the Central Otago Vintage Car Clubis hosting the 24th National Motorcycle Rally in Cromwell, and I think that with not a lot oforganising Hawke’s Bay could assemble a team of bikes, riders and supporters to travel down toCromwell and participate. If you are interested or slightly interested get in touch with me and we can have a mettingand work out a plan of attack to make the trip.Ross NewlandPhone 06 844 4248 – email newross@xtra.co.nzmotorcycle show 29-30 novHi Everyone,The Southland Branch is once again holding a Motorcycle Show on the 29th –30th November in the Otatara Hall with bikes ranging from 1903 to 1983. Thetheme this year is “The unapproachable Norton from flat tanks to rotary”. Manyother rare bikes will also be on show, including a Brough Superior, Cotton, Rudgeand Singer as well as more well known makes. We understand that this will be the biggest display of Vintage Bikes to be held inNew Zealand. Profits from this event will be going to Hospice Southland and thiswill be held on the same week of the Burt Munro Challenge.Kind Regards, Donald Ward, Southland Branch VCC11

Mother’s day/lady drivers’ runMAY 12th 2013 – Some years ago, when shestill lived in NZ, my Lizzie (who used to be yourMag Editor) and I, decided to take on the LadyDrivers’ Run. It was on a Mother’s Day too ... wewere allocated, out of his immense collection, one of Jimbo's feeble Morrie Minors. After we'd lost power on a hill, lost thegearbox out in the country somewhere and losta lot of patience, faith, and clumps of hair, weamazingly came second.Following a family tradition, this year, as hewas going to be out of town for the weekend, Iwangled an "old" sporty thing out of him – hisbeloved Mazda MX5, scaringly referred to by most of my kids as the Sardine Tin (sure is fishy, theway it roars up the road). Having never driven it before (and horrors! it's MANUAL, with the silliestlittle gear stick – not very masculine, that) I was "taken on a test drive to see if I could drive it".Passed, so off he went, and I collected youngest daughter, Jenni, and drove to the starting gate inSplash Planet land. The smallest one there, and of course, not REALLY Vintage (but old, actually).Loftily looked down upon by big old Vintages, with white-faced ladies (AND some men!!) at thewheel, we felt a bit intimidated. I was scared stiff I'd drive into something, but Jen was a force tocontend with navigating – she was on to it right from the Windsor Park grounds. As we roaredup Grove Rd (slowly), she didn't miss a beat. Out into the country, along lovely Oak Avenue (we'dput the top down on the Sardine Tin, as it sure is claustraphobic in there with it on), being reallycareful NOT to follow anyone else, selecting all the Pioneer Maize numbers (good idea, Anne –made us concentrate) checking on Play Centres, and orchard numbers. Woops! What the hellare we doing on Pakowhai Rd with all the numbers on the gates wrong? Well, she was a smartnavigator that one." Go back to Evenden Rd Mum, that's where we went thru a crossroads, looking for a T-junction". And she was dead right. Anne had "made a Typo", and there was Mark, waving us down Oak Ave again, and on out to Bridge Pa, where we had a lot of up and downing(and U-turns) looking for obtuse signs on fences (about now we suddenly discovered we werebeing stalked by a grey RAV 4 – James, no less, driving along behind me reckons he's come acrossthe VCC cars by mistake ... well, I hadn't done anything naughty, so he was disappointed). We all ended up in the lovely Golf Club upstairs Cafe with Devonshire teas, sitting out on theamazing deck, looking at the well-behaved golfers. What a neat day! I was really shocked to find we'd won it – I was so sure Sharon and Markwould have as everywhere we went they were there first! She was equally pleased to find shegot second and doesn't have to set next year's run.Jen said she'd help me set it, so look out ladies!!Thank you Anne and Mark. It was a real pleasure to be back in the driver's seat again.Apologies to the owner of the Sardine Tin. I didn't even SCRATCH it!!!!!!!Barbi Speers13
