As glove structures with enhanced cut resistance were developed,the EN388 standard cut resistance test method was found to be inadequate;therefore a new method has been created. BM Polyco selected theISO Cut Test Machine (ICTM) on the basis that it is widely recognised as providingaccurate and reliable measurements. Personal ProtectiveEquipment DirectiveThe Personal Protective Equipment at WorkDirective 89/656/EEC require employers toprovide the employees with appropriatePersonal Protective Equipment (PPE).Protective gloves which are classified asPPE must be CE marked.To assist in the selection of PPE, the Personal Protective Equipment Directive(89/686/EEC) is written such that safety equipment is categorised. Thiscategorisation enables Safety Personnel to select the appropriate PPE to matchthe hazards and risks identified during Health and Safety Audits. In addition, theproperties of protective gloves are described by a range of European Standards,and gloves must comply with relevant standards.The PPE risk categories are described as simple, intermediate and complex design.Simple design gloves may be used in situations where the end-user canidentify the hazards and level of protection required; where the effects of thehazard are gradual and can be identified in good time. Food Approval and Medical DevicesThere are two stages that a glove manufacturer must gothrough to ensure that a product is suitable for food use;1. Ensure that the product formulation is made from products listedin regulation 10/2011 (relating to plastic materials and articlesintended to come into contact with foodstuffs). This is a positivelist whereby the product concerned can only be made from thematerials listed in this directive.2. Perform migration testing to ensure that the article in contact withfood does not leach anything into the food. This is detailed in theEN1186 series of standards (materials and articles in contact withfoodstuffs - plastics).If both of these criteria are met, the following symbolcan be applied to the glove and/or packaging:EN1186This set of standards lays down what chemicals can be used toreplicate the various food types as well as the methods used.There are 4 food stuffs defined:• Aqueous where plain water is used as the food simulant• Alcoholic where 10% ethanol solution is used as the foodsimulant• Acidic where 3% acetic acid solution is used as the foodsimulant•Fattywhere various equivalents are used as the food stimulant.Typically these are iso-octane, 95% ethanol or olive oilTypically for gloves repeated extractions of 2 hours are carriedout at 40°C to mimic repetitive transient contact.EN1186 requires that there is a maximum overall migration limitfrom the article into the food of 10mg/dm 2 , any article being used incontact with food must meet this requirement.EN1186 also allows for reduction factors to be applied to fatty food.This is based on the fat content of the food and the ability of aparticular foodstuff to extract component(s) out of an article incontact with food. Laboratory TestsThe state-of-the-art Technology Centrelaboratories at BM Polyco are equipped tocarry out a range of tests on protective gloves.The chemical and physical test laboratories areaccredited by UKAS (United KingdomAccreditation Services) to ISO 17025.EN374-2 Determination of Resistance to PenetrationThis is the reference test specified by the European Standard for the assessment of glovequality. Gloves must pass this test in order to prove that they are an effective barrier againstliquids and micro-organisms.A statistical sample taken from a batch of gloves is subject to checks for pinholes and leaksby either inflation with air or by filling with water. Performance levels are assessed accordingto the acceptable quality levels (AQL) of the gloves. Gloves must meet at least level 2 ofEN374-2 to be considered micro-organism resistant.Level 1 2 3AQL 4.0 1.5 0.65EN374-3 Determination of Resistance to Permeation by ChemicalsResistance to permeation is assessed by measuring the time for a chemical to breakthroughthe glove material. Samples, cut from the palms of gloves, are placed in a permeation cellwhich enables the chemical to be placed in contact with the outer surface of the gloves.Collection air or water is passed through the cell to collect any chemical that has brokenthrough to the inside surface of the glove sample. Polyco laboratories are equipped with aFTIR spectrometer (to detect solvents), conductivity/pH electrodes (to detect acids, alkalis andsalts) and UV/Visible spectrophotometer (to detect high boiling point, water solublechemicals and solvents). Laboratory TestsEN388 Protective Gloves Against Mechanical RisksThe following equipment is used to assess the properties ofgloves specified by the EN388 standard.A Martindale wear and abrasion tester is used to measurethe abrasion resistance. The test involves rubbing samples,cut from the palms of gloves, against a standard glasspaper until a hole is worn through one of the samples.The number of abrasion cycles is used to assess theperformance.A Sodemat (coup) cut tester is used to measure theresistance to cutting. Samples are cut from gloves andplaced in a frame which enables a circular, counter-rotatingblade to slice through the glove material. The number of cyclesrequired by the blade to cut through the glove are recorded.These are converted into a cutting index by comparisonwith the number of cycles required to cut through astandard reference material. The standard now allows for analternative test method to be used for highly cut resistantproducts and this test is described in EN ISO 13997. Itmeasures the force required to make a cut in the testsample 20mm long and is often referred to as the ISO CutTest. Performance levels are established according tocutting index.Puncture and tear resistance are measured with atensometer. Puncture resistance is measured asthe force required to break through samples from gloveswith a standard puncture needle (it should be noted that thedesign of this needle is comparable to that of a large nail,and the puncture strength from this test cannot be used toassess resistance to puncture by hypodermic needles). Tearresistance is measured as the force required to tear apartsamples from the glove, which are in the form of a pair oftrousers (this test is also known as a trouser tear test). Thelegs of the trouser samples are pulled apart and themaximum force used to assess tearing resistance of thematerial.EN420 General Requirements for GlovesThis standard includes tests for glove dimensions, dexterityand allergens. Laboratory TestsEN407 Protective Gloves Against Thermal RisksBurning Behaviour is tested according to EN ISO 6941 with the glovemounted and tested vertically. A flame is placed directly below and in linewith the glove at an angle of 30° and a distance of 20mm. The glove istested for each ignition time i.e. 3 seconds and 15 seconds. The flametime and after glow time for each performance level is as follows:Contact Heat is tested according to EN702. Samples are taken from thepalm area and placed in contact with a cylinder of the appropriate temperature.To gain the relevant performance level, the temperature of the inside of theglove cannot rise by more than 10°C within the threshold time.Convective Heat is tested according to EN367 : 1992. Samples aresubjected to the incident heat from a flame, and the heat passing throughto the inside of the glove is measured. The time to record a temperaturerise of 24°C is the Heat Transfer Index (HTI).Radiant Heat is tested according to EN ISO 6942 : 2002. The sample isexposed to radiant heat density of 20kW/m 2 and the time taken for thetemperature on the inside of the glove to rise 24°C gives the performance level.Resistance to small splashes of molten metal is tested according toEN348 : 1992. Molten drops from a metal rod melted by exposing the rodto a flame are allowed to fall on the sample. The number of drops requiredto raise the temperature on the inside of the glove by 40°C gives theperformance level.Resistance to large splashes of molten metal is tested according toEN373 : 1993. A quantity of molten iron is poured onto the sample, whichhas a PVC film mounted behind the sample. Thehand model is typically heated to 30-35°C. The resultant thermal insulation(ITR) is calculated using the hand model temperature, climatic roomtemperature and the power consumption of the heated hand to maintain aconstant temperature.Contact Cold is tested according to ISO 5085-1 : 1989. The ThermalResistance (R) is calculated by placing the sample on top of a heatedplate with another metal plate (cold plate) placed on top of the sample.This is placed inside a cabinet which has an extractor fan to draw air pastthe assembly which has a cooling effect on the cold plate. The temperaturegradient either side of the sample is measured and compared with thetemperature gradient either side of a reference standard. The ThermalInsulation is calculated from the known thermal resistance of the standardand the measured temperature gradients.Water Impermeability is tested in accordance with EN ISO 15383. Waterpenetration shall not appear less than 30 minutes after the start of the testand is essentially a pass or fail.EN60903 Live Working Gloves of Insulating MaterialTo obtain compliance with EN60903, all gloves must be tested to therelevant voltage in the table opposite. The construction, thickness and testvoltage combine to give the class compliance.
