That cannot be, for accordingto the apostle John, “Whosoever is born <strong>of</strong> God doth notcommit sin; ...” (I John 3:9). “Whosoever committethsin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression<strong>of</strong> the law” (verse 4).Some would have us believe that God made themthat way! Such is impossible. God is holy, and He wouldnever make anything that was unholy. It may well bethat there are some children who have that type <strong>of</strong>feeling. If so, sin, not God, made them that way. Godcan save anyone and everyone from their sins if theywill confess and forsake them.The title <strong>of</strong> this editorial is Christians Hate Sin—Not Sinners. And I really mean that, for a person cannotbe a Christian and hate anyone. If you have a friendor a relative who is living that way, do not shun ormistreat them in any way. How can you ever win themto the Lord if you do that? God said those acts were anabomination in His sight, yet He loved all mankind somuch He gave His only begotten Son to die for them sothey could be saved. Let us work with Him and notagainst Him in this effort <strong>of</strong> seeing souls saved anddelivered from all sin. The Abundant Life2012 Cayman Convention Message by Bro. Alvin A. CraigWE JOIN with Bro. James in expressing our appreciationfor the presence <strong>of</strong> each one <strong>of</strong> you whoare here tonight, and I thank the Lord for theprivilege I have <strong>of</strong> being here again this year. The Lordhas been good to me and has enabled me to live to bewith you this another time.I do feel the need <strong>of</strong> the Lord’s help, and I’m askingthat the saints bear me up in your prayers. It is a verysacred thing to stand behind the pulpit to declare God’smessage to the people. Not only will you give an accountto God for the message that you hear, but I shall givean account to God for the message that I deliver.Well, as you know, we have a theme; and when wehave a theme, a lot <strong>of</strong> our preachers try to build theirsermons around the theme. So sometimes you may hearone preacher preach the same thing that another onehas already preached. I remember old Bro. R. L. Erwin.Years ago, I held a couple <strong>of</strong> meetings with him in Mississippi.He said a lawyer said to him, “You preachersthink just because you’ve said something one time,that’s all you need to do, but we lawyers take a strongpoint and say it over and over again.” It made me think<strong>of</strong> a tract I once read. Some preacher was telling otherpreachers how to preach. He said to those preacherswho say, as I’ve said before, “Well, if you’ve said it before,why are you saying it again?” That preacher had a differentestimation <strong>of</strong> what the lawyer had said as towhat we should do. So don’t be surprised that I’m goingto speak on the same thing as the others have. I’m goingto read a few more verses though than I normally do.INTRODUCTIONIf you have your Bibles, turn with me to John 10. Iwill read through verse 14. “Verily, verily, I say untoyou, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold,but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thiefand a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is theshepherd <strong>of</strong> the sheep. To him the porter openeth; andthe sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheepby name, and leadeth them out. And when he puttethforth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and thesheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a strangerwill they not follow, but will flee from him: for theyknow not the voice <strong>of</strong> strangers. This parable spakeJesus unto them: but they understood not what thingsthey were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesusunto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am thedoor <strong>of</strong> the sheep. All that ever came before me arethieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall besaved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. Thethief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and todestroy: I am come that they might have life, and thatthey might have it more abundantly. I am the goodshepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for thePage 2sheep. But he that isan hireling, and notthe shepherd, whoseown the sheep are not,seeth the wolf coming,and leaveth the sheep,and fleeth: and thewolf catcheth them,and scattereth thesheep. I am the goodshepherd, and knowmy sheep, and amknown <strong>of</strong> mine.”Theme:“The Abundant Life—Christ’s Purpose for His People”DO YOU BELIEVE THE BIBLE?I have a question for you. Do you believe the Bible?Do you really believe the Bible? “I am the door: by meif any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go inand out, and find pasture.” In the first verse, Jesus saidthat if anyone tried to climb up some other way, he wasas a thief and a robber. There are many people tonightwho are trying to climb up another way, and Jesus said,“They are the same as a thief and a robber.” He said,“I am the door.” How many doors are there to thesheepfold? Now, think with me. How many doors arethere to the sheepfold? If you go through that Door, andI go through that Door, you’re saved and I’m saved; butif you go and join this, and I go and join that, that’sanother way. There is only one Door, and when youenter that Door, you don’t become a mere church member.You’re saved. Salvation means, “deliverance fromsin,” and not in sin. So there is only one Door to thesheepfold, and since there is only one Door to the sheepfold,there’s only one sheepfold. If there were twosheepfolds, you would have to have two doors. So sincethere is only one Door to the sheepfold, then there isonly one sheepfold. “I am the door: by me if any manenter in, he shall be saved.”Christ said that He was a Shepherd, and the sheepfollow Him (John 10:4); and if you are not willing t<strong>of</strong>ollow Christ, you are not going to be in His sheepfold.I know the Church <strong>of</strong> God has a standard, and I knowsome people think its too strict; but I say again, Christis the Shepherd <strong>of</strong> the sheepfold, and the sheep followHim, for they know His voice. If you are really savedand in the sheepfold, you know the Shepherd’s voice.Now, back in Bible times when they had sheepfolds,there would be more than one shepherd who wouldbring his sheep into that fold for protection at night.The next morning, the porter would open the door, andeach shepherd would call out his sheep. knew them by name, but those that were only his wouldhear his voice and come out, and those <strong>of</strong> the nextshepherd would come out, because they knew his voice.Christ said, “I am the Shepherd, and My sheep knowMy voice, and they follow Me.” So make sure you’re inthe right fold.SATAN COMES TO STEALThe tenth verse <strong>of</strong> our text, John 10, speaks aboutthe thief that comes. Do you know who the thief is? Thedevil. He comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy. I knowBro. Bascoe has spoken on the thought <strong>of</strong> “steal,” butI have something I want to say about it, too. This thiefcomes to steal your affection away from God and putyour affection on the world. Now, Jesus was not talkingabout some literal thief breaking into your home andstealing your jewelry, etc. He was talking about somethingfar more important than your valuable things inthe house. You know, John said in I John 2:15-17, “Lovenot the world, neither the things that are in the world.If any man love the world, the love <strong>of</strong> the Father is notin him. For all that is in the world, the lust <strong>of</strong> the flesh,and the lust <strong>of</strong> the eyes, and the pride <strong>of</strong> life, is not <strong>of</strong>the Father, but is <strong>of</strong> the world. And the world passethaway, and the lust there<strong>of</strong>: but he that doeth the will<strong>of</strong> God abideth for ever.”Notice those three things John mentioned: the lust<strong>of</strong> the flesh, the lust <strong>of</strong> the eyes, and the pride <strong>of</strong> life. Goback to the Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden and you will notice thosewere the very three things that Satan tempted Evewith. I’m sure Eve had been by that tree before andhad seen that fruit, but on this particular occasion, shelooked at it in a different way. Satan, this thief, got herto look at it—lust <strong>of</strong> the eyes; and then, the lust <strong>of</strong> theflesh—he was successful in getting her to desire to eatthe fruit, and told her if she did, she will be wise likethe gods—appealing to the pride. So Satan temptedEve, and he was successful in doing so with the verythree things that John said was <strong>of</strong> the world. I say toyou, the thief comes to steal your affection away fromGod and causes you to put it on the world.I asked you earlier, Do you believe the Bible? Doyou know what Jesus said? He said, “No man can servetwo masters: you will either love one, and hate theother.” “O no, Bro. Alvin, you can’t tell me I hate God.”I didn’t tell you that you hate God. Jesus told you. Doyou believe what He said? One verse says despise. Well,that’s about the same thing as hate. Jesus also said, “Ifyou love Me, you will keep My commandments.” So theonly people in the world who are serving God are thosewho love Him. Someone mentioned this afternoon aboutsomeone saying, “So-and-so made me a Christian.” Youcan’t make people be Christians. Absolutely not! You’llserve God because you love Him. No one is walkingaround with a gun to my back and saying, “I have todo this.” No, I am endeavoring to serve God because Ilove Him and His way. So Satan steals your affection.SATAN COMES TO KILLThe second one mentioned is, “to kill.” Jesus wasn’ttalking about taking a gun and killing someone. WhatJesus was talking about was killing the soul, and sinkills the soul. “The wages <strong>of</strong> sin is death.” Those preacherswho are telling you that we are all sinners aretelling you a falsehood. Believe it or not, you are lookingat a person who is not a sinner. I’m a Christian. I’mnot a sinner. Thank God, He saved me from my sinswhen I was seventeen years <strong>of</strong> age. That’s what salvationis—deliverance. Signing a decision card doesn’tdeliver you from sin; being baptized in water doesn’tdeliver you from sin; becoming a church member doesn’tdeliver you from sin. I believe we heard a song earlierabout the blood. It is the blood <strong>of</strong> Christ that cleansesfrom sin, and that’s the only thing that will cleansefrom sin. “There is one God, and one mediator betweenGod and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Peter said, “Thereis none other name under heaven given among men,whereby we must be saved.” Jesus Christ gave Himselfto redeem us from all iniquity, and to purify unto Himselfa separate people, zealous <strong>of</strong> good works. TheChurch <strong>of</strong> God, the saints <strong>of</strong> God are a separate people.Because we are, we don’t think we’re better than otherpeople. We just thank God for being redeemed. So thesecond part, “to kill,” is talking about the soul.That’s what happened to Adam and Eve. They died.Sin killed them. God said, “In the day that you eat <strong>of</strong>the fruit <strong>of</strong> that tree, you shall surely die.” They ate <strong>of</strong>it, and they died. Before that they had looked forwardto God coming down in the cool <strong>of</strong> the evening to fellowshipwith them. It was their delight to have God tocome down to fellowship with them, but after theysinned, they tried to hide themselves. Why? Becausethey had lost that fellowship with God and were undercondemnation.SATAN COMES TO DESTROYThe third says, “destroy.” I could tell you some pitifulthings that I’m not going to take the time for, butthe ultimate aim <strong>of</strong> Satan is to destroy you in the lake<strong>of</strong> fire. He does a lot <strong>of</strong> destroying in this time world.He destroys homes, lives, and other things. One <strong>of</strong> thereasons that we, the saints <strong>of</strong> God, are facing the perilwe are facing today is because the nominal religion hasgone with the world. They’ve lost their morals. Let metell you something, I don’t see how in the world a Christiancan vote for a man who advocates same sex marriage.How in the world can a Christian do that? Godsaid that it is an abomination in His sight. I think Godknew what He was talking about. Well, maybe that wastoo weak. I know God knew what He was talking about.But that’s not all. They are aborting children by themillions. The latest thing they’re coming out with iswhat they call partial birth abortion. When the childis almost out <strong>of</strong> the mother’s womb, a sharp instrumentis stuck in the back <strong>of</strong> the child’s head to kill it. It ispartial birth abortion, because the child is partway out<strong>of</strong> the mother’s womb.I am not a politician, nor am I talking politics, butthis man who was up for election a few weeks ago inour country, supports abortion. We had a big news itemin our country the other day after the election. A lesbianin Minnesota was elected to the Senate, and she’s goingto be the first open lesbian in our Senate. It madeworld-wide news, I suppose. I know it was all acrossour country. I said awhile ago, and I say it now, one <strong>of</strong>the reasons why we are in a perilous state is because<strong>of</strong> religion losing its power, its standard, and joiningwith the world. I tell you, whenever those who call<strong>April</strong> 2013 Page 3


themselves Church <strong>of</strong> God join in with the world, they’reno longer the Church <strong>of</strong> God. It takes more than thetrue name to be the true church. So the thief comes tokill, to steal, and to destroy; but Jesus said, “I am comethat they might have life, and that they might have itmore abundantly.” When Jesus said those words Hewas not talking about material prosperity. He wasn’tpromising you a mansion, two or three cars, and a lot<strong>of</strong> other things. Preachers who are preaching this fromthe standpoint <strong>of</strong> material things are misrepresentingwhat Jesus taught. He was not talking about materialthings when He said, “I am come that they might havelife, and that they might have it more abundantly.”Jesus was talking about life in the soul. He said, “Aman’s life consisteth not in the abundance <strong>of</strong> the thingswhich he possesseth.” In fact, He said, “How hardlyshall they that have riches enter into the kingdom <strong>of</strong>God!”ABUNDANT LIFEJohn (where our text is taken from) speaks <strong>of</strong> lifethirty-six times more than any other New Testamentwriter. Sin brings death, Christ brings life. The Christianlife is a personal intimate relationship betweenyou and Christ. My father was a Church <strong>of</strong> God preacher,but that did not give me spiritual life. It had an influenceon me, yes. I am thankful for the Christian heritagethat I have, but Christianity is a personal intimaterelationship between you individually and Christ. “Hethat hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not theSon <strong>of</strong> God hath not life.” Jesus gives us a whole newmeaning to living, because He provides personal satisfactionand perfect guidance. That is why Paul said, “Ifany man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old thingsare passed away; behold, all things are become new.”The Greek phrase used to having it more abundantlymeans, “to have a super abundance <strong>of</strong> a thing.”I think Bro. James emphasized that point this morningin his message. It’s not just an abundance, but a superabundance. It’s something really special. Being a child<strong>of</strong> God is something special, and having a close intimaterelationship with Christ is something special. To reallyhave a knowledge <strong>of</strong> Christ, to know who He is, andwhat it means to be a Christian is to have this superabundant life. Jesus tells us what life is in the beautifulprayer that I call the Lord’s Prayer, which is John17, because that’s the one He actually prayed. In the3 rd verse <strong>of</strong> that chapter, Jesus said, “This is life eternal,that they might know thee the only true God, andJesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” To know Christ isto know life. “He that hath not the Son <strong>of</strong> God hath notlife.” If you do not have Christ, you do not have life.Jesus told us what it is.Let me read in First John about some <strong>of</strong> the blessingswe have in being a child <strong>of</strong> God. John says here,“That which was from the beginning, which we haveheard, which we have seen with our eyes, which wehave looked upon, and our hands have handled, <strong>of</strong> theWord <strong>of</strong> life; (For the life was manifested, and we haveseen it, and bear witness, and show unto you thateternal life, which was with the Father, and wasmanifested unto us;) That which we have seen andheard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowshipwith us: and truly our fellowship is with thePage 4Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” John said, “Thisis why I am writing this to you, so you can have fellowshipwith us, for our fellowship is with God the Father,and with Christ.”Fellowship starts with God. If you don’t know God,you don’t have fellowship with the saints. John said,“Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with hisSon Jesus Christ.” We’re telling you these things so youcan have fellowship with us, because we have it. Wewant you to have what we have. That’s one reason whywe’re having this convention. We want you to have whatwe have. We want you to have that abundant life, thatoverflowing life, and fellowship with God, with Christ,and with the saints. An experience <strong>of</strong> salvation givesyou that fellowship, and only those who have salvationhave that fellowship. I tell you, fellowship with thesaints is sweet. It’s like the precious ointment that randown Aaron’s beard. “Behold, how good and how pleasantit is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Don’tthink that I am preaching a sectarian message tonight.There’s a hymn in our book that says, “We reach ourhands in fellowship to every blood-washed one.” I tellyou one thing, God wants all <strong>of</strong> His sheep to be together.He doesn’t want them divided into 100, 200, or 300different folds. Fellowship is one <strong>of</strong> the things we havein this abundant life. We have Sonship. Well, I don’twant to take up the rest <strong>of</strong> tonight’s service talkingabout what all we do have, but I will mention a fewthings.Being a sheep in God’s fold gives us peace. Jesussaid, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” The worldcannot give you what it doesn’t have; but Christ has it,and we can have it. Paul said in Romans 14:17, “Thekingdom <strong>of</strong> God is [not going to be] not meat and drink;but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the HolyGhost.” “While others dream <strong>of</strong> an age to come, He’sreigning in our hearts today.”What a pleasure in life it is bringing!What assurance and hope ever bright!O what rapture and bliss are awaiting,When our faith shall be lost in the sight!’Tis a kingdom <strong>of</strong> peace, it is reigning within,It shall ever increase in my soul;We possess it right here when he saves from all sin,And ’twill last while the ages shall roll.I am not looking forward to the rapture, as far asthe seven-year false doctrine is concerned, and I’m notlooking for a literal kingdom here on this earth. I amlooking for the kingdom Christ has already set up tobe taken with Him to heaven. When Christ comes He’snot coming to set up a kingdom, but He’s coming todeliver up the kingdom that’s already set up. The Biblesays, “When Christ comes, then cometh the end.” Sothe kingdom <strong>of</strong> God is a present reality, and the kingdom<strong>of</strong> God is a kingdom <strong>of</strong> peace.Beloved, this abundant life gives us the privilege <strong>of</strong>prayer. We had a lovely prayer meeting this morning.It is good for saints to get together and pray, but don’tforget your own personal prayer life. I’ve said manytimes, to be a victorious Christian, you must have avictorious prayer life. You cannot have a victoriousThe <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong>


Christian life without a victorious prayer life. We havethe privilege <strong>of</strong> coming to our heavenly Father in thename <strong>of</strong> Christ, because we are one in His sheepfold.Here again we see Jesus was not talking about materialthings. He was not talking about material abundance,but He was talking about spiritual life, and what joyand pleasure it brings. “For God so loved the world [theworld <strong>of</strong> people], that he gave his only begotten Son,that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, buthave everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into theworld to condemn the world; but that the world throughhim might be saved.”CONCLUSIONNow, a choice must be made. Again, Jesus said, “Noman can serve two masters”; but you are going to serveone, and you must individually make the choice whichone you’re going to serve. Bro. James can’t make it foryou; I can’t make it for you; Bro. Junior, Bro. Terry, andothers can’t make it for you. There’s no one who canmake that choice for you. You’re the only one who canmake it for yourself. So a choice must be made. It mustbe! You can’t get by without making a choice. You’re notgoing to live in this world without making a choice,“Therefore, O thou son <strong>of</strong> man, speak unto the [Caymanians];Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressionsand our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them,how should we then live? Say unto them, As I live, saiththe Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death <strong>of</strong> thewicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live:turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will yedie, O [Caymanians in your sins]?”Jesus loves you. He gave Himself for you, and it isnot His will, along with the Father, for you to perish.But again, it’s a choice you must make. There is a transformationthat must take place in a person’s lifeto experience a change. I believe withall <strong>of</strong> my heart today that a born againChristian is a changed person. What doesthe Bible say about this?I will be reading from a familiar passage <strong>of</strong> scripturetaken from the 1 st chapter <strong>of</strong> Romans, and from 1 stPeter, chapter 2. Romans 1:14-16, “I am debtor both tothe Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise,and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am readyto preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. ForI am not ashamed <strong>of</strong> the gospel <strong>of</strong> Christ: for it is thepower <strong>of</strong> God unto salvation to every one that believeth;to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” From I Peter2:6, “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture,Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious:and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”You will notice that both <strong>of</strong> these scriptures (Romans1:16; I Peter 2:6) refer to those who believe.After much laboring and suffering, Paul was eagerto preach the gospel to those people at Rome also; notonly eager, but ready. He was not reluctant to declarethat he was not ashamed <strong>of</strong> it, but that it was the power<strong>of</strong> God unto salvation only to those who believe. Somuch rest on the individual if he is to experience thistransformation. He “must believe that he [God] is, andthat he is a rewarder <strong>of</strong> them that diligently seek him.”It is not what church our grandparents may havebelonged to, but it is believing on the Lord Jesus Christthat will save us from sin. God has handed down to usa wonderful gift, a wonderful privilege, but we mustbelieve in order to receive it. It is a biblical fact. It iscomparatively easy to make Christ the center <strong>of</strong> ouroutward forms <strong>of</strong> worship, or to make Him the center<strong>of</strong> our discussions and arguments. Only a born againexperience <strong>of</strong> conversion enables one to make Him theactual governing center <strong>of</strong> his total life.Peter referred to Christ and what He is to theChristian. Verse 6 that I read from I Peter 2, says,“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold,I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: andhe that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” Thisrefers to Jesus Christ, the chief Cornerstone, the Head<strong>of</strong> the church. Peter also referred to the church and herdistinctiveness. Verse 5, “Ye also, as lively stones, arebuilt up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to <strong>of</strong>ferup spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by JesusChrist.” Verse 9, “But ye are a chosen generation, aroyal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;that ye should show forth the praises <strong>of</strong> him who hath<strong>April</strong> 2013 Page 5


called you out <strong>of</strong> darkness into his marvellous light.”What a change! What a transformation that takes placein the life <strong>of</strong> a person who is redeemed by the blood <strong>of</strong>Jesus Christ!Peter told us how to mature as Christians. Thereare some things to be laid aside. “Wherefore layingaside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, andenvies, and all evil speakings” (I Peter 2:1). “All malice.”Malice is “a desire to harm others, or to see others suffer.”A lot <strong>of</strong> malice is in the world today. Let me tellyou, Friends, Christians are different. Christians area peculiar people. Christians do not walk around withmalice in their hearts. “All guile.” Guile is “skillfuldeceit, or treacherous cunningness.” What a word!“Hypocrisies.” Hypocrisies, which means, “falseness”;also, “people who are pr<strong>of</strong>essing to be what they arenot.” We cannot hide from God. He knows all about us.“Envies.” Envies, “feelings <strong>of</strong> discontent and resentmentaroused by desire for the possession or qualities <strong>of</strong>another person.” The last one, “Evil speakings.” Evilspeaking is “saying something that causes ruin, injury,or pain.” The Apostle here says, “Lay it aside.” “Whereforelaying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies,and envies, and all evil speakings, As newbornbabes, desire the sincere milk <strong>of</strong> the word, that ye maygrow thereby.” What he was saying was a believer inChrist has become one in God’s family <strong>of</strong> peculiar people,and is therefore expected to reflect that life.Now, what is belief? It is “faith in believing in somethingor someone you don’t have at hand before you.”That is my definition <strong>of</strong> faith, but that is what it reallyis. Faith in Jesus’ blood affects forgiveness from sin.We don’t see Jesus, we don’t see the blood <strong>of</strong> Christeither, but we know it happened. By faith we know thatit came to pass. It is faith and trust and believing inthis great God. The Bible tells us that Noah obeyedGod by faith, and there were things yet not seen. InHebrews 11:7 we read, “By faith Noah, being warned<strong>of</strong> God <strong>of</strong> things not seen as yet, moved with fear, preparedan ark to the saving <strong>of</strong> his house.” Yes, that’swhat belief is, Friends, that’s what faith is. Let me tellyou, Noah set about to build that ark, and he took along time to do it, but he believed God. He found favorin the eyes <strong>of</strong> the Lord.Believing in God caused Sarah to give birth at theage <strong>of</strong> 90 years. If you look into the 11 th verse <strong>of</strong> Hebrews11, it says, “Through faith also Sara herself receivedstrength to conceive seed, and was delivered <strong>of</strong> a childwhen she was past age, because she judged him faithfulwho had promised.” This thing called salvation is awonderful thing. This thing called faith is real. It is nota word-<strong>of</strong>-mouth thing. No, it is a deep act <strong>of</strong> belief inGod. It is from the heart.Faith caused Moses to make a major change in hislife. “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refusedto be called the son <strong>of</strong> Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosingrather to suffer affliction with the people <strong>of</strong> God, thanto enjoy the pleasures <strong>of</strong> sin for a season; Esteemingthe reproach <strong>of</strong> Christ greater riches than the treasuresin Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense <strong>of</strong> thereward.” The Bible goes on to say, “By faith he forsookEgypt, not fearing the wrath <strong>of</strong> the king: for he endured,as seeing him who is invisible.” Egypt is a type <strong>of</strong> sin.Page 6When you put your trust and belief in God, you leavea world <strong>of</strong> sin, and then you believe and trust fully inthis living God. Leave the world. When you leave theworld, leave it. When you leave sin, leave it. Put itdown, and don’t go back after it, Friends. That’s whatit means to believe and to trust in God.Believing in God caused the walls <strong>of</strong> Jericho to falldown. It was not the vibration from the trumpet, as alot <strong>of</strong> people would like to believe. The Bible says in the30 th verse <strong>of</strong> Hebrews 11, “By faith the walls <strong>of</strong> Jerich<strong>of</strong>ell down, after they were compassed about seven days.”Obedience to God and faith in God caused the walls t<strong>of</strong>all down.Believing in and accepting the Lord Jesus Christinto your life will result in a new birth, Friends. TheBible tells us in I John 5:1, “Whosoever believeth thatJesus is the Christ is born <strong>of</strong> God: and every one thatloveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten<strong>of</strong> him.”Believing in and accepting the Lord Jesus Christinto your life will result in freedom from condemnation.Paul said, “There is therefore now no condemnation tothem which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after theflesh, but after the Spirit.” What a freedom! what a joy!what a peace! What an assurance to know that you’reliving for the Lord, you’re safe in His arms, and yoursins have been forgiven. You are no longer under thecondemnation <strong>of</strong> sin.Believing in and accepting the Lord Jesus Christinto your life will result in a desire to forsake that life<strong>of</strong> sin. The Bible tells us in I John 3:9, “Whosoever isborn <strong>of</strong> God doth not commit sin.”Believing in and accepting the Lord Jesus Christinto your life will result in an effort to forgive otherpeople. You don’t live unto yourself. There is a realityin this, My Beloved Friends. One <strong>of</strong> the first scriptureslearned in Sunday school is Ephesians 4:31, 32—“Letall bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, andevil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgivingone another, even as God for Christ’s sake hathforgiven you.” How can we expect God to forgive us ifwe don’t forgive our fellowman? That’s what the Bibleteaches. The Christian experience is a forgiving one. Itis one <strong>of</strong> love, <strong>of</strong> forgiveness, and longsuffering; it is one<strong>of</strong> knowing how to get along with people and with oneanother; it is one <strong>of</strong> loving your neighbor as yourself.Believing in and accepting the Lord Jesus Christinto your life results in a new man. Paul said, “If anyman be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things arepassed away; behold, all things are become new.” It’s awonderful life, Friends. It is a transformed life. Youcannot live it alone, but by the grace <strong>of</strong> God, you canlive it. By the power <strong>of</strong> God and you, you can live it.One <strong>of</strong> these days your life will be rewarded by hearingthe words <strong>of</strong> our Master, “Well done, thou good andfaithful servant; ... enter thou into the joy <strong>of</strong> thyLord.”If you don’t know the Lord today, why not seek toknow Him? We do find propheciesto the effect that the time would come when theGentiles would be a part <strong>of</strong> God’s people. It was possiblefor a Gentile to become a proselyte, but it wasmore an act on his part and not an effort <strong>of</strong> the Hebrewpeople.However, the time came when the “middle wall” wasbroken down, and it was made known that the Gentileshad the same access to the grace <strong>of</strong> God as the Hebrews.This truth was not fully accepted overnight! It tooksome time for this fact to be accepted.MEDITATIONSGO YE INTO ALL THE WORLD—Mark 16:15—Jesus had come into the world and ministered to Hisown people. He said He was sent only to the lost sheep<strong>of</strong> Israel. After His resurrection, and shortly before Heleft them to return to the Father, He told them theywere to go into all the world and preach the gospel toevery creature. Verse 16—Jesus had come to “His own,”and His own, with some exceptions, had rejected Him;now they are instructed to “Go” with the gospel—thegood news—and whoever would believe and obey themessage was to show their acceptance <strong>of</strong> the messageby being baptized.GO AND TEACH—Matthew 28:19, 20—Teach allnations that Jesus Christ had come into the world, andHe had died and risen again so everyone could be saved.Again, those who heard and accepted Him as Saviorwere to be baptized, and Jesus told them how theyshould go about this: “In the name <strong>of</strong> the Father, and<strong>of</strong> the Son, and <strong>of</strong> the Holy Ghost.” This was, and is,New Testament baptism! It was not baptism untorepentance as John’s had been. Baptism is a burial; itis not sprinkling; it is not pouring.They were to teach the new converts to obey all <strong>of</strong>Jesus’ commandments—not the Old Covenant law. Ifthey would do this, Jesus promised to be with them tothe end <strong>of</strong> their lives.THUS IT IS WRITTEN—Luke 24:46—It wasnecessary for Christ not only to come into this worldand teach the way <strong>of</strong> life, but it was necessary for Himto give His life so that we could have life. Without theshedding <strong>of</strong> blood there is no remission <strong>of</strong> sins. Modernreligions that leave the blood out <strong>of</strong> their songs andsermons have only a form <strong>of</strong> godliness and deny thepower there<strong>of</strong>. Jesus rose the third day just as He saidHe would. “Why seek ye the living among the dead?”Verse 47—The disciples were not to preach churchjoining. They were to preach repentance—“Except yerepent, ye shall all likewise perish.” True repentancebrings remission <strong>of</strong> sins.A UNIVERSAL GOSPEL—John 3:16—The wordworld in this verse means “the world <strong>of</strong> people.” Godloves every soul in every nation, and He gave His onlybegotten Son for every soul. The teaching that only aselect number <strong>of</strong> people can be saved is a doctrine <strong>of</strong>the devil! “Whosoever will may come.” Verse 17—Goddid not send His Son into the world to condemn theworld. The world was already condemned, for “all havesinned and come short <strong>of</strong> the glory <strong>of</strong> God.” God sentHis Son so that the world through Him might besaved.HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM—Verse 18—When one truly believes on Christ, having repented <strong>of</strong>all sin, condemnation is gone! “There is therefore nowno condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”(Romans 8:1). Those who do not believe the messagego on in their condemnation, and if they die in thatstate, they will be eternally lost, for Jesus said, “If youdie in your sins, where I am you cannot come.”LIGHT IS COME INTO THIS WORLD—Verse19—We are told that for nearly 400 years, there wasno open vision; but we read in the Scriptures, “Thepeople which sat in darkness saw great light; and tothem which sat in the region and shadow <strong>of</strong> death lightis sprung up” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus said, “I am thelight <strong>of</strong> the world: he that followeth me shall not walkin darkness, but shall have the light <strong>of</strong> life” (John 8:12).If we desire to have fellowship with God, His Son(Christ), and the saints, we must walk in the lightwhile we have it! “Yet a little while is the light withyou. upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knowethnot whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe inthe light, that ye may be the children <strong>of</strong> light” (John12:35, 36).CONCLUSIONJesus said He would build His church and the gates<strong>of</strong> hell would not prevail against it. His church was setin divine order on the day <strong>of</strong> Pentecost when the 120were filled with the Holy Spirit. Around 3,000 soulswere added to the church that day, and shortly thereafter,5,000 more. Jesus was building His church, andHe is still building His church every time a soul issaved. “The Lord added to the church daily such as[were being] saved” (Acts 2:47). “But now hath God setthe members every one <strong>of</strong> them in the body, as it hathpleased him” (I Corinthians 12:18). Those who makeup His church today have the same commission thatHe gave the disciples.FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION1. To whom did Christ give the commission to gointo all the world with the gospel?2. Palmer“And Jesus went about all Galilee teaching in theirsynagogues, and preaching the gospel <strong>of</strong> the kingdom,and healing all manner <strong>of</strong> sickness and all manner <strong>of</strong>disease among the people” (Matthew 4:23).WHAT AN encouragement this verse ought to beto the sick and afflicted! It reveals Jesus as theMaster <strong>of</strong> every affliction and disease. I knowthat there are many who sc<strong>of</strong>f at the statement thatGod heals today and there have been a great manyreproaches brought upon the teaching <strong>of</strong> divine healingby those who pr<strong>of</strong>ess to have faith and do not possessit. But in spite <strong>of</strong> unbelief and improper demonstrations<strong>of</strong> divine healing, there is the truth that God does healtoday. ...Before we enter into a discussion <strong>of</strong> divine healing,let us define what it is. Divine healing is the healing<strong>of</strong> an affliction, disease, or injury by supernatural powerin answer to prayer.There are several things which cannot be classed asdivine healing. Divine healing is not the power <strong>of</strong> themind exercised over certain afflictions. Much <strong>of</strong> the sickness<strong>of</strong> the world, we know, is mental. Many say that allsickness is in the mind. This, however, stretches reasontoo far and goes beyond what we know to be facts. A manwhose leg is broken might believe in his mind that itwas not broken. But if his head were cut <strong>of</strong>f and histhinking faculties were destroyed, the leg would still bebroken. Mental attitudes have a great deal to do withone’s recovery, but they do not change facts.Divine healing is not something that can be practiced.By that I mean that I could not hang out myshingle as a healer and actually heal my patrons orgive them treatments. By so doing I might deceive some<strong>of</strong> the people and make a reputation for myself, but Ichoose rather to teach the people the truth that divinehealing is not practiced in any such form. Divine healingis a touch <strong>of</strong> divine power eliminating the sicknessin answer to prayer.People, and even godly ministers, have rejecteddivine healing because <strong>of</strong> their traditional background.They have become confused by a denominational orcreedal position and have become prejudiced againstthe plain teachings <strong>of</strong> God’s Word. If such people wouldgive careful, earnest, and humble consideration to God’sWord aside from all modern distortions <strong>of</strong> divine healingthey would soon see that it is God’s will and Hisplan to heal His people. Godly men who oppose divinehealing readily acknowledge that God answers prayer.They say that God saved the soul, which is unseen, butthey refuse to admit that God heals the body, which wesee. They have accepted God’s promises in the realm<strong>of</strong> the unseen but they reject God’s promises in the visible.By so doing they limit God’s power, in their ownministry, and the faith <strong>of</strong> those who hear them.Natural physical healing is <strong>of</strong>ten accepted as divinehealing. Often a person becomes ill. He goes to thehospital, is given the very best <strong>of</strong> care, may even havean operation, and comes home well. He says that Godhealed him. I believe that if we stop and think we willreally recognize that that is not divine healing butnatural, physical healing. It is an effort at cooperationwith the laws <strong>of</strong> nature—something which always tendsto promote the recovery <strong>of</strong> a person—but it cannot becalled divine healing. It is true that God has ordainedthe physical laws <strong>of</strong> the body and the science <strong>of</strong> medicineand surgery is designed to help those laws functionproperly. This is all very true, but I want to call yourattention to the fact that almost every patient in thesickroom is being healed in that way. The man who iswicked, sinful, doubting, and unbelieving is beinghealed that way. ... This sort <strong>of</strong> healing is natural healingoperating according to established laws; it is notdivine healing at all. Divine healing is that whichsupersedes laws. It disregards laws and effects a curein response to faith. It is sometimes hard to make adistinction between natural healing and divine healing.But divine healing is the result <strong>of</strong> an act <strong>of</strong> faith in thepromises <strong>of</strong> God that brings about definite results inanswer to prayer. The healing may be instantaneous,or it may be a rebuke upon the cause <strong>of</strong> the afflictionthat allows the normal recovery <strong>of</strong> the individualaccording to physical laws. Whether healing is instantaneousor gradual, the act <strong>of</strong> healing is just as muchdivine in one case as in another.The <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong>


There are some who explain away the miracles <strong>of</strong>Jesus, but for the most part conscientious ministerswho accept God’s Word as authoritative believe thatJesus performed miracles while He was here on earth.Our text testifies to this fact. Many, many other scripturestell about Jesus’ miracles <strong>of</strong> healing. ...Divine healing was manifested in the early churchafter Jesus’ ascension. We read <strong>of</strong> Peter healing thelame man at the temple gate. We read <strong>of</strong> Stephen doinggreat wonders and miracles among the people. ... It isevident, too, that God desired the healing ministry tocontinue for in the establishment <strong>of</strong> His church and theinstructions concerning spiritual gifts (given in I Corinthians12:9, 10). He mentions the gift <strong>of</strong> faith, thegifts <strong>of</strong> healing and the working <strong>of</strong> miracles. ... I Corinthians12:28 says: “God hath set some in the church,first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers,after that miracles, then gifts <strong>of</strong> healing, helps, governments,diversities <strong>of</strong> [languages].” I cite these scripturesto show that God has made provision for this phase <strong>of</strong>the gospel ministry and that divine healing was to bea permanent and not a temporary thing. ...When we look in the Word <strong>of</strong> God we find instructionsfor the sick to follow. In James 5:13-16 we read:“Is any sick among you afflicted? let him pray. Is anymerry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? lethim call for the elders <strong>of</strong> the church; and let them prayover him, anointing him with oil in the name <strong>of</strong> theLord: And the prayer <strong>of</strong> faith shall save the sick, andthe Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committedsins, they shall be forgiven him.” ... As he obeys God’sWord and follows the instructions <strong>of</strong> the Lord, his faithis stimulated and strengthened. There is no virtue inthe oil or in the laying on <strong>of</strong> hands, but faith is theimportant thing. These acts may and will stimulate orprovoke active faith. The oil is the symbol <strong>of</strong> the HolySpirit who accomplishes the healing. Then there isadded to the instructions the scripture that the ferventprayer <strong>of</strong> a righteous man avails much.Brother, sister, if you will turn to Isaiah 53 and readyou will find that Jesus suffered stripes to heal yoursickness and diseases. “With his stripes we are healed”(verse 5). His Word is forever settled in heaven. Jesusis the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is touchedby the feeling <strong>of</strong> your infirmity. Why not step out onbelieving faith and trust God for your healing? All vegetation waskilled in a spot about the size <strong>of</strong> a large room.When I was attending high school, my last class forthe day was on the 2 nd floor. There was a balcony withstairs from the 2 nd floor to the ground. There had beenfreezing rain which caused the balcony and stairs to beglazed with thick ice. I didn’t realize that was the condition,so I rushed out to go to my bus. I fell on thebalcony and slid to the edge. A few more inches and Iwould have plunged to the ground. God sent His angels,because He knew I was going to get saved in a few yearsand serve Him.When I was a young child, my parents and I werecrossing a flooded creek in a wagon pulled by a pair <strong>of</strong>mules. This was in the early 1930’s. The bridge waseither washed out or not safe, but Daddy found a spotwhere he believed we could make it across. In midstreamthe wagon bed became attached from the running-gearand wheels. The bed floated to safety beingpulled by the swimming mules. I say that was anothermiracle, praise the Lord!I had an issue <strong>of</strong> blood every day for over a year andbecame very weak and pale. I sent a prayer request toBro. Raib Arch and Sis. Wilma M<strong>of</strong>fitt in Grand Cayman.The day they received my letter, I was healed. Ina few days I was back to normal.I had a fistula in the late 1970’s, which caused megreater suffering than anything I have ever had beforeor after, including childbirth. I trusted God. I knew Hewould see me through if I wouldn’t give up. However,there were times the pain was so great I had to endureone minute at a time. I would have Mother to call thesaints in Hagerstown, sometimes in the middle <strong>of</strong> thenight. The details are so personal I will not write them.God honored my desire to trust and obey Him. Healingcame very gradually, but was complete as He saw fit.In the early 1980’s, I had a spell with my heartbeating so fast and hard that we couldn’t count thepulse, and the blood pressure was so low the machinewouldn’t register it. I have two members <strong>of</strong> my familywho are experienced in checking blood pressure levels.That spell lasted all night. Suddenly, at 7:00 A.M., my<strong>April</strong> 2013 Page 9I


heartbeat returned to normal. However, it left me weakfor weeks. Then about two years later, my heart wentto skipping beats. Finally, it was so bad it would beatone and skip one. Sometimes it would beat once andthen skipped two. I called Bro. Junior Trisler in Louisianaand he prayed for me over the phone. He said hehad the witness that I was healed. I felt no different,but claimed the witness and the promise. Healing wasgradual, but in due time my heartbeat returned to normal.A nurse friend <strong>of</strong> my mother checked on me everyday. She was experienced in working closely with acardiologist. She said that I was in severe heart failureand could have died any minute. That happened in themonth <strong>of</strong> March, and I was still so weak by camp meetingtime in July that I was unable to sit up for very longat a time, but I made my reservations to fly to Washington,D.C., to attend the camp meeting in Hagerstown.Thank God, He gave me the strength to go.The greatest miracle <strong>of</strong> all was when the Lord savedme in September 1949. I had not been brought up inthe church and knew very little about the Bible, butGod was patient and merciful to teach me, because mydesire was to obey, to learn, and to stay true. Even though we are small in number, Iknow that we hold the true meaning <strong>of</strong> the Word in thechurch.My story <strong>of</strong> salvation started when I was about 15years <strong>of</strong> age. I would hear the message in church andreally ponder about it, but it would be like I wouldn’ttake it with me. You see, my mother pretty much wouldforce me to go to church. Although I always wanted to,it seemed like I would go to make her happy, or for thefree food we would have afterwards during a potluckdinner.We had a visitor from California, and she sat downby me one day. When we were standing and singing ouraltar call song, she looked at me and asked me if I wouldmake a trip to the altar with her and pray with her.Taking the first step out <strong>of</strong> the pew was something thatwas so hard to do. When we got to the altar, I told herthat she needed to ask for forgiveness and ask the Lordto come into her heart so she could become a servant<strong>of</strong> His, and she did. On the way home that day, I feltthe Lord convict me and asking me, “Why didn’t youask for forgiveness? Why hadn’t you gone to the altarand pray?”On the following Sunday, I felt like the message wasdirected towards me. The message was about how weare all born <strong>of</strong> the Adamic nature. The message steppedon my toes and told me that I needed to make my wayup to the front, and that is what I did. Although Sis.Rose McDonough at this time was blind, I heard hershout “Amen” from the front pew. I hit my knees hardthat day. I asked for forgiveness. I told the Lord Iwanted to be a part <strong>of</strong> His kingdom, and that I wantedHim to be the center <strong>of</strong> my life. Even now talking aboutit, I get goose bumps. I felt a sense <strong>of</strong> calmness whenI returned to my seat. I felt the power <strong>of</strong> God take hold<strong>of</strong> me.I still attend church regularly. I attended a four year college; however,coming home and seeing the poverty in which my familywas stricken by, due to the poor economy, in a senseit was hard for me to go back. I stayed home one semesterin order to help out my mother, for she is a singlemother. I could see the help that was needed. Althoughsome people thought I was jeopardizing my future, withmuch prayer I felt like I made the right decision.I continue to grow strong in faith. I enjoy attendingthe convention in Hagerstown in the summertime withthe church, and going to all the other revivals that wepartake in. Some <strong>of</strong> those versesare what the 1,000 years’ reign people use. Verses 40,41, “Some will rise in the sky with Jesus—some willremain here on earth for the great tribulation.” Whatdoes all this mean?—AnonymousANSWER: First <strong>of</strong> all, I do not claim to understandevery verse in this chapter, but I do know it is not talkingabout a “great tribulation” out in the future, nor isit talking about the end <strong>of</strong> time and the second coming<strong>of</strong> Christ. It is dealing with the destruction <strong>of</strong> Jerusalemand the end <strong>of</strong> the Jewish people as a nation. “Verily Isay unto you, This generation shall not pass, till allthese things be fulfilled” (verse 34).Verses 1 and 2: “His disciples came to him for toshow him the buildings <strong>of</strong> the temple. And Jesus saidunto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say untoyou, There shall not be left here one stone upon another,that shall not be thrown down.” Jesus goes on tosay—Verses 4-6: “Take heed that no man deceive you. Formany shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; andshall deceive many. And ye shall hear <strong>of</strong> wars andrumours <strong>of</strong> wars: see that ye be not troubled: for allthese things must come to pass, but the end is notyet.”Within a year after Jesus returned to the Father, aSamaritan arose claiming to be Christ. Also, we readin Acts 8 <strong>of</strong> Simon Magus who lived in Samaria andclaimed to be the great power <strong>of</strong> God. There were others,too. Around 55 A.D., Felix, an Egyptian imposter,collected 30 thousand followers and led them up on theMount <strong>of</strong> Olives telling them at his command the walls<strong>of</strong> Jerusalem would fall—<strong>of</strong> course they did not.There were wars and rumors <strong>of</strong> wars, there wereearthquakes—politically and literally—there werefamines, etc., all before the great tribulation came.Verses 15 and 16: “When ye therefore shall see theabomination <strong>of</strong> desolation, spoken <strong>of</strong> by Daniel theprophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, lethim understand:) Then let them which be in Judaeaflee into the mountains.” Abomination <strong>of</strong> desolation.One explanation for abomination <strong>of</strong> desolation is “thesupplanting <strong>of</strong> true worship <strong>of</strong> God by pagan worship.”We read in Josephus, Book VI: “And now the Romans,upon the flight <strong>of</strong> the seditious into the city, and uponthe burning <strong>of</strong> the holy house itself, and <strong>of</strong> all the buildingsroundabout it, brought the ensigns to the temple,and set them over against the east gate; and there didthey <strong>of</strong>fer sacrifice to them, and there they did makeTitus imperator with the greatest acclamations <strong>of</strong> joy.”Tertullian, one <strong>of</strong> the early church fathers wrote,“Almost the entire religion <strong>of</strong> the Roman camp consistedin worshiping the ensigns, swearing by the ensigns,and preferring the ensigns before all other gods.” Verse15 says when you see this, “Then let them which be inJudaea flee into the mountains.”Verse 21: “For then shall be great tribulation, suchas was not since the beginning <strong>of</strong> the world to this time,no, nor ever shall be.” This, then gives us the time forthe starting <strong>of</strong> the “great tribulation”—the Roman armyencircled the city <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem. It might be <strong>of</strong> interestfor me to point out that Titus encompassed the city atthe time <strong>of</strong> Passover—the same time <strong>of</strong> the year thatJesus was crucified, and that because <strong>of</strong> this many moreJews were there than would have normally been.The historian, Josephus, without knowing the Scripturesgiven here, describes what happened to Jerusalemand the temple in great detail just as Jesus said it wouldbe. “Caesar gave orders that they should now demolishthe whole city and temple, except three towers and apart <strong>of</strong> the western wall.” In Matthew 23:34-38, Jesusspeaks <strong>of</strong> how they had killed prophets, and mistreatedothers, then He said, “That upon you may come all therighteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood <strong>of</strong>righteous Abel unto the blood <strong>of</strong> Zacharias ... whom youslew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say untoyou, All these things shall come upon this generation.... Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.”Luke 21:20, 21 says, “When ye shall see Jerusalemcompassed with armies, then know that the desolationthere<strong>of</strong> is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea fleeto the mountains; and let them which are in the midst<strong>of</strong> it depart out; and let not them that are in the countriesenter thereinto.”Matthew 24:16 and 17 says about the same thing.Some say after the Roman army encircled the city, forsome unknown reason they withdrew for a short time,and it is said then is when all the Christians fled out<strong>of</strong> the city as Jesus had instructed, while many <strong>of</strong> theJews fled INTO the city which Jesus said they shouldnot do.Some think the Roman army withdrew for awhilebecause the Jews inside the city were fighting and killingone another and the Romans did not interfere.“Much fighting broke out inside the city between thewarring factions. The factions <strong>of</strong> John and Simon werefighting each other, and the area around the Templewere burned down” (Josephus, page 354). They alsodestroyed some <strong>of</strong> their food while fighting oneanother.Verse 21: After the saints had fled, the Roman Armyreturned, and this verse says “then shall be greattribulation.” I suppose we could include the fightingamong the Jews as part <strong>of</strong> “the great tribulation.”This quote from Adam Clarke’s Commentary: “Thenumber <strong>of</strong> those who fell by the sword was very great.ELEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND perished duringthe siege. Many were slain at other places, and othertimes.” Then Clarke goes on to give numbers for variouscities in other countries. For instance, Alexandria50,000, at Japha 15,000 and at Joppa 4,200. Josephussays, “The number <strong>of</strong> captives taken in the whole war<strong>April</strong> 2013 Page 11


amounted to 97,000.” The total for all countries is placedat around 1,357,660.There was great famine in the city. The Jews beganto fight among themselves and destroyed some <strong>of</strong> thefood they did have. Josephus said that “children pulledthe very morsels that their fathers were eating out <strong>of</strong>their very mouths, and, what was still more to be pitied,so did the mothers do as to their infants; and whenthose that were most dear were perishing under theirhands, they were not ashamed to take from them thevery last drops that might preserve their lives. Theyalso invented terrible methods <strong>of</strong> torment to discoverwhere any food was, and they were these: to stop uppassages <strong>of</strong> the privy parts <strong>of</strong> the miserable wretches,and to drive sharp stakes up their fundament.”Some tried to escape out <strong>of</strong> the city, but the Romanarmy caught them, tormented and killed them. Hundredswere crucified on crosses, as many as 500 in oneday. One <strong>of</strong> the most gruesome stories was about amother who had boiled her child and eaten part <strong>of</strong> itand saved the rest to eat later, when some men smelledthe “food” and demanded where it was. When she showedthem, and told them it was her child and she had eatensome and <strong>of</strong>fered it to them, they left and did not eatany <strong>of</strong> it. You find much more detail about the destruction<strong>of</strong> Jerusalem in Josephus’ book. This is the greattribulation Jesus was talking about.After the great tribulation, verses 23 to 34 tells youwhat happened. There is nothing in the Bible to supporta seven-year rapture before the great tribulation takesplace. All the teaching about having to receive a markin your hand or forehead before you can buy groceries,a literal kingdom <strong>of</strong> a thousand years, a rebuilt templein Jerusalem where Jews will <strong>of</strong>fer animal sacrificesGod will accept, and a lot more is false doctrine withno Bible support.As to the supposed seven-year rapture, that comes,in part, from Daniel 9:24-27. Daniel was told “Seventyweeks are determined upon thy people and upon thyholy city, to finish the transgression, and to make anend <strong>of</strong> sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, andto bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal upthe vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.”Those who teach the rapture doctrine, understandthe 70 weeks (490 days) represent 490 years, and theyteach that the first 69 (483 years) came one right afterthe other, but they put what some call “the big gaptheory, or the church age” between the 69 th and 70 thand work their false doctrine around that 70 th week—seven years. They invent an extra “prince” that is notin the Scriptures, and make him “the anti-christ” whoenters into a seven-year covenant with the Jews. Bythat time the Jews have a rebuilt temple in Jerusalemand are making their animal sacrifices. This temple issupposed to be the “most holy” that was anointed.Richard DeHaan, in his book, Israel and the Nationsin Prophecy, says, “In Daniel 9:27 we are told this dictator(the anti-christ) will make a seven-year pact withthose Jews who are in the land <strong>of</strong> Israel at the time <strong>of</strong>his accession to power. In the middle <strong>of</strong> this seven-yearperiod he shall deliberately break this treaty and inauguratean intense persecution <strong>of</strong> the Jewish peoplewhich will precipitate the most dreadful time in theirPage 12troubled history.” If I understand their teaching, thechurch will be raptured out <strong>of</strong> the world and not haveto go through the great tribulation; however, not all <strong>of</strong>them teach the church will be taken out <strong>of</strong> the earth.The Bible does not teach any such doctrine. The 70 thweek followed the 69 th without any gap at all. A rebuilttemple is not what was anointed. DeHaan says, “Toanoint the most Holy definitely refers to the Holy <strong>of</strong>Holies in a reconstructed temple. The Jews will havea new temple which God will anoint and acknowledgeat the beginning <strong>of</strong> the millennial age.” When JesusChrist was baptized in the Jordan River and whilestanding in the River, the Holy Spirit came upon Himand anointed Him, and that was the beginning <strong>of</strong> the70 th week. Jesus Christ was “cut <strong>of</strong>f” (crucified) in themiddle <strong>of</strong> the week to bring in everlasting righteousness.Matthew 24:36-39: Jesus is still talking about theevents leading up to the destruction <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem andthe time the Jews will cease to be a separate nation. Ifyou look in Luke 17:26-31, you will see where Jesusrefers to the days <strong>of</strong> Noah. Then in verse 31 He says,“In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, andhis stuff in the house, let him not come down to takeit away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise notreturn back.” This could not possibly be talking aboutthe second coming <strong>of</strong> Christ and the judgment! One isnot going to bring “his stuff” to the judgment. What ishe to do? He is to do what Jesus said in Matthew 24:16,he is to “flee into the mountains.”In regard to verse 36, this verse has no reference towhat we call the second coming <strong>of</strong> Christ. Jesus is stilltalking about the destruction <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem and the end<strong>of</strong> the Jewish people as a nation. In Mark 13:32, weread, “But <strong>of</strong> that day and that hour knoweth no man,no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son,but the Father.” Adam Clarke’s comments on this verse:“This clause [neither the Son] is not found in Matthew24:36 or Luke; and Ambrose says it was wanting insome Greek copies in his time. To me it is utterly unaccountable,how Jesus, who knew so correctly all theparticulars which he here lays down, and which wereto a jot and tittle verified by the events—how he whoknew that not one stone should be left on another, shouldbe ignorant <strong>of</strong> the day and hour when this should bedone, ... I strongly suspect that the clause was notoriginally in this Gospel.”As to Matthew 24:40, Adam Clarke says, “The meaningseems to be, that so general should these calamitiesbe, that no two persons, wheresoever found, or aboutwhatsoever employed, should be both able to effect theirescape; and that captivity and the sword should havea complete triumph over this unhappy people.” Josephussays many who tried to escape out <strong>of</strong> the city werecrucified on crosses.According to Luke 21:22 “all things which are writtenmay be fulfilled.” As far as I know, that verse issaying all that was written about the literal nation <strong>of</strong>Israel was fulfilled by the time Jerusalem was destroyedor shortly thereafter. Under the New Covenant theHebrews are not God’s covenant people; they mustaccept Jesus Christ to be a child <strong>of</strong> God just like all therest <strong>of</strong> us. THECHILDREN’SCORNERALL THINGS NEWA Bible Lesson by Sis. Rebecca Bland“Have you fed and watered the chickens yet?” mymother asked me. It was late in the afternoon <strong>of</strong> a coldwinter day. I looked out the window. Snow was falling,the wind driving it into s<strong>of</strong>t piles at the corners <strong>of</strong> theporch steps.“No,” I answered her. “Not yet.”“Well, you’d better get out there now,” she said. “It’llbe getting dark pretty soon and you won’t be able tosee where you’re going.”I put on my coat and scarf and headed toward thedoor. At the kitchen sink I stopped to fill a quart jarwith water. Once I got to the chicken house, I wouldexchange this jar <strong>of</strong> water for the empty one that wasout there now.It was a simple watering system. There was a roundmetal drinking trough screwed to the top <strong>of</strong> the quartjar in place <strong>of</strong> a lid. After screwing a jar <strong>of</strong> fresh waterto the drinking trough, all I had to do was invert thewhole thing, and water would automatically refill thetrough as the chickens emptied it.I decided to use warm water because I didn’t wantit to freeze before the chickens could drink it. In fact,the water was almost hot. By the time I got out to thechicken house, I knew it would be cooling <strong>of</strong>f. Carefully,so as not to spill any <strong>of</strong> the water, I opened the kitchendoor and stepped out onto the porch.Brrrr! It was cold! I walked down the porch steps,pushing snow out <strong>of</strong> my way with my boots. The windstung my eyes, making them water.At the entrance to the chicken yard, I struggled withone hand to undo the twisted wire holding the gateclosed. Try as I might, the stubborn wire resisted allmy efforts. I sighed. I would have to set the water downand use both hands to open the gate.I set the jar <strong>of</strong> water down in the snow beside thepath and undid the wire. In no time at all I had thegate open.I reached down to pick up the glass jar. To my surprise,the water in the jar rushed out, making a steamingpuddle on the ground where the jar had been. Ilooked again. The bottom <strong>of</strong> the jar had broken cleanlyaway from the rest <strong>of</strong> it and was sitting in the middle<strong>of</strong> the puddle.“The jar broke!” I said to my mother as I reenteredthe kitchen. “The jar <strong>of</strong> water for the chickens broke,and the water went everywhere!”“It broke?” she said in surprise. “What did you do—drop it?”“No,” I said. “I just set it down to open the gate,and the bottom came out <strong>of</strong> it!”“Hmmm,” she said. She thought for a few moments.“Did you put warm water in the jar?”“Yes,” I answered. “I didn’t want the water to freezebefore the chickens could drink it.”“Well, don’t ever set warm glass in something cold,”she said. “It’ll break.”With that piece <strong>of</strong> advice in mind, I grabbed anotherjar and filled it with water. I’d be a little more carefulthis time.It was not until later, in science class at school, thatI learned exactly why the jar <strong>of</strong> warm water had brokenwhen I set it in the snow. The inside <strong>of</strong> the glassjar expanded because <strong>of</strong> the warm water, while theoutside contracted when it touched the cold snow. Thisquick contraction was more than the glass could handle,causing it to break.Jesus <strong>of</strong>ten used examples like this from real lifewhen He explained the kingdom <strong>of</strong> God to His audiences.Jesus once said that He had noticed how menput new wine into new bottles instead <strong>of</strong> into old ones.If they used old bottles for new wine, He told His listeners,the new wine would cause the old bottles to breakduring the fermentation process, making a big mess.What can we learn from this story Jesus told? Theremight have been several different lessons Jesus had inmind when He told this story. One <strong>of</strong> them was abouthow foolish it is to try to mix old things with new whenit comes to our Christian lives.When Jesus comes into our hearts, He makes allthings new. Old, ugly selfish habits are replaced byactions <strong>of</strong> kindness toward others. These beautiful newactions belong in a heart that Jesus has made new.Good things do not fit in a heart that is not madeclean and new by Jesus. If we try by ourselves to putgood things into our lives without first giving ourhearts to Jesus, it is like the people <strong>of</strong> long ago whoput new wine into old bottles. It will not work.We cannot make our lives good on our own. SHALL WE CONTINUE INJames W. FairSin is intention. It is the doing <strong>of</strong> evil when we knowbetter. When people plunge their sinful lives beneath theblood <strong>of</strong> Christ, their sins are gone.WSIN ?HAT IS this thing that so influences the life <strong>of</strong>mankind? How does the Bible define sin? Theapostle Paul writes, “Whatsoever is not <strong>of</strong> faithis sin” (Romans 14:23). James states, “To him thatknoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin”(James 4:17).Sin, then, is not ignorance on our part; it is intention.It is the doing <strong>of</strong> evil when we know better.First John 5:17 reads, “All unrighteousness is sin.”Sin is twisting and wringing life out <strong>of</strong> its proper shapeor out <strong>of</strong> conformity to that which is right in the sight<strong>of</strong> God. John further declares, “Whosoever committethsin transgresseth ... the law: for sin is the transgression<strong>of</strong> the law” (I John 3:4). We sin when we deliberatelybreak away from the will <strong>of</strong> God, making sin consist <strong>of</strong>open rebellion against God on the part <strong>of</strong> man.Those who continue in sin are its slaves. Their lotis separation from God and eternal life. James wrote,“Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James1:15).G. B. Ciard has very aptly illustrated how sin barsmen from God:The Jewish rabbis used to teach that Adam and Evelost by their disobedience a radiance <strong>of</strong> face and a radiance<strong>of</strong> character which they had had in the Garden <strong>of</strong>Eden. For in the garden they were like mirrors, reflectingthe light <strong>of</strong> God’s presence. Their whole life was aresponse to God: he spoke and they could answer; hecommanded and they could obey; he gave and they couldreceive; he loved and they could love in return; his natureradiated holiness and goodness which they reflected inthe goodness <strong>of</strong> their souls. But when they chose to disobeyGod and were shut out from his presence, they werelike mirrors in the dark room; they had lost the gloryGod intended them to have.There can be no doubt that the apostle Paul hadthis teaching in mind when he said, “The wages <strong>of</strong> sinis death” (Romans 6:23). For when sin enters people’slives, they are separated from God. They lose God’spresence in their lives. From that moment death beginsto reign in their lives.Sin not only separates between man and God, butit completely disrupts the life <strong>of</strong> the individual. I haveseen trees that were blown over by a great blast <strong>of</strong> astorm while surrounding trees stood firm. The cause <strong>of</strong>their downfall was found upon examination <strong>of</strong> thetrunk. Unknown to the forester, the process <strong>of</strong> dry rothad been going on. When the winds came, these treeswere utterly destroyed.When people allow sin to enter their lives, theirattitudes become warped. They begin to violate thestandards <strong>of</strong> God. One thing leads to another, and theyplunge deeper and deeper into sin and destruction.These people are missing the standard <strong>of</strong> God. Theyare perverting their character by wringing their livesout <strong>of</strong> conformity with what is right. The result is adecaying life. ...Homes are broken and innocent children are leftparentless because <strong>of</strong> sin. Penal institutions and reformschools are the result <strong>of</strong> sin. Sin results in one thing—life at its worst.The apostle Paul asks, “What shall we say then?Shall we continue in sin? ... God forbid” (Romans 6:1,2). Instead, we should die out to sin. In the same chapterPaul writes, “Let not sin therefore reign in yourmortal body” (verse 12). “He that is dead [to sin] is freedfrom sin” (verse 7).To die to something is to have nothing to do with it,to be totally separated from it. But to live to a personlike Jesus Christ is to be entirely given up to Him. Itis to have the most intimate connection with Him. Paulwas referring to this when he said, “If we be dead withhim, we shall also live with him” (II Timothy 2:11). InChrist, Paul saw man as God intended him to be, reflectingthe goodness <strong>of</strong> God. So he preached the gospel <strong>of</strong>the good news that if we die out to sin, we may becomealive to Christ.A man tells about visiting in the home <strong>of</strong> his friendwhen the small daughter in the home ran suddenlythrough the room. A few minutes later the girl’s brotherhurried excitedly through the room. The father, sensingthat something was wrong, went into the adjoiningroom to find that his daughter had cut herself slightly.In the excitement that followed someone attempted toapply iodine to the cut and spilled it on a pretty whitescarf, leaving a large brown spot in the middle.The wife regretted the matter and was ready tothrow the scarf away when her husband asked for it.He immediately took it to the college laboratory, wherehe was studying chemistry. The pr<strong>of</strong>essor gave him acertain solution in which to dip the ruined scarf. As hesubmerged it, the spot disappeared.The young husband asked the pr<strong>of</strong>essor, “Doctor,what happened to the iodine?” The teacher replied bygiving the formula, to which the husband remarked, “Iknow the formula, but what happened to the iodine?”The pr<strong>of</strong>essor said, “Well, you can reverse the processand get the iodine back.” “I don’t want the iodine back;I just want to know what happened to it.” This thepr<strong>of</strong>essor could not answer. He knew only that whenthe stained scarf was dipped in the solution, the spotdisappeared.This illustrates the remedy for sin. When peopletake their sinful lives and plunge them beneath theblood <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ, their sins are gone. We neverknow what happens to them, but our lives become pureand clean, without spot or blemish.Shall we continue in sin when Jesus Christ died forus? God forbid. GOD’S PURPOSE FOR MARRIAGEEd. Note: This lecture was deliveredby Bro. Okereke Ogbonnaya in Okposi,Nigeria (condensed).Introduction to the Subject:The origin <strong>of</strong> marriage: Marriage is aholy institution instituted by the all-wiseGod Himself. After God created the first man, Mr. Adam,and watched him for some time, He said: “It is NOTgood that the man should be alone; I will make him anhelpmate for him” (Genesis 2:18). He gave a beautifullady, a woman, to Adam who was called Eve, and shebecame his wife.The first reason for instituting a marriage: In mymind the first reason was to build a home; thus, a youngman and a young lady will leave their parents’ ro<strong>of</strong> andstart a life afresh under their own ro<strong>of</strong>. “Therefore shalla man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave[be joined] unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”(Genesis 2:24). It is never good and will never be goodfor two families to share or live in one house.Another reason, like the first, is to avoid loneliness.Solomon the wise man said that two are better thanone, which is a statement <strong>of</strong> fact. See Ecclesiastes 4:9,10.The second reason for instituting a marriage: Toavoid fornication or adultery. Genesis 2:24, 25, “Theyshall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the manand his wife, and were not ashamed.” Those who dressimmodestly, even in Christian gatherings, should learna lesson here. The only man or woman who has a rightto see your nakedness is your husband or wife. Paulsaid in I Corinthians 7:2, “To avoid fornication, let everyman have his own wife, and let every woman have herown husband.” Please bear this in mind: There shouldbe no unfaithfulness in marriage.The third reason for instituting a marriage: To preserveposterity on earth. “So God created man in hisown image ... male and female created he them. AndGod blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful,and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it”(Genesis 1:27, 28).How should a husband and wife live? I am not ableto say all that the Bible says on this point, but just toremind you <strong>of</strong> a few. The apostle Peter, in I Peter 3:7,said, “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them accordingto knowledge ...” And in verse one he said, “Likewise,ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands.” Seealso Ephesians 5:22-25; Colossians 3:18, 19. In I Corinthians7:3-5 we read, “Let the husband render untothe wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wifeunto the husband. The wife hath not power <strong>of</strong> her ownbody, but the husband: and likewise also the husbandhath not power <strong>of</strong> his own body, but the wife. Defraudye not one the other, except it be with consent for atime, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer;and come together again, that Satan tempt you not foryour incontinency.” With these scriptures in mind, andPage 16MISSIONARY PAGEothers alike, if a couple should so live there will be noquestion <strong>of</strong> divorcement.What is divorcement? According to Webster’s NewWorld Dictionary Second College Edition, Divorce:“(1) legal and formal dissolution <strong>of</strong> a marriage. (2) anycomplete separation or disunion.”Old Testament Divorcement: The Bible is very clearand plain in regard to divorcement in Old Testamenttimes. Deuteronomy 24:1, 2 reads, “When a man hathtaken a wife [Please note here: it is not saying betrothed],and married her, and it come to pass that she find n<strong>of</strong>avour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleannessin her: then let him write her a bill <strong>of</strong> divorcement,and give it in her hand, and send her out <strong>of</strong> his house.And when she is departed out <strong>of</strong> his house, she may goand be another man’s wife.” Note that the wordUNCLEANNESS has no connotation <strong>of</strong> either fornicationor adultery as some refer. Why? The law for fornicationor adultery had already been given to them asrightly pointed out in Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy22:22-26. [The law was death for such.] The Phariseesquoted the law in John 8:5, and they knew well thatthe law carried the death penalty—stoning to death.If we would interpret that the uncleanness referredto had anything to do with unchastity on the part <strong>of</strong>the woman, her lot would be stoning to death and notdivorcement, or becoming another man’s wife would bestrange. No <strong>of</strong>fender will live, no matter who is involved.Again, the word betroth is simply, “a bond <strong>of</strong> a promise<strong>of</strong> marriage.” It is only a promise, not marriage, andcan be broken without a letter <strong>of</strong> divorcement.Why divorcement in old Israel? The Master Himselfanswered the question with ease, “Because <strong>of</strong> the hardness<strong>of</strong> your hearts” (Matthew 19:8). Instead <strong>of</strong> abusinghis wife, the man was instructed to give her a bill <strong>of</strong>divorcement, and let her go and get another man. Inthe Old Testament, a woman did not have the right todivorce her husband.Separation as taught in the New Testament: Theapostle Paul teaches the possibility <strong>of</strong> separation in theNew Testament church. It is plain and to the point. Ifthe house is in disarray and chaos that could no longercontain the couple, the Apostle said the couple couldseparate until they could work out their problems andcome together again, but they could not marry another.Separation here is not divorcement. Paul never taughtdivorcement. See I Corinthians 7:10, 11.Divorcement in the New Testament church: Christthe Messiah came with “grace and truth.” Before thecoming <strong>of</strong> Christ, the penalty for the sin <strong>of</strong> adultery orfornication was death. Instead <strong>of</strong> stoning an <strong>of</strong>fenderto death, Christ, who is full <strong>of</strong> grace and truth, changedthe law <strong>of</strong> divorcement which is far better. The Son <strong>of</strong>man did not come to destroy life but to save it.The temptation <strong>of</strong> the Pharisees: “The Pharisees alsocame unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Isit lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?”Mark the words, “for every cause.” They never said foradultery or fornication. Christ referred them to creationwhen God instituted marriage, and that marriage isfor life, according to God’s plan. “Till death do we part”(Matthew 19:3-6). They then questioned the law <strong>of</strong>Moses on divorcement and putting her away. ChristThe <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong>


told them that Moses gave them that law because <strong>of</strong>the “hardness <strong>of</strong> hearts,” that it was not so from thebeginning.Christ, in verse nine, went on and established a newlaw for the new dispensation. “I say unto you, Whosoevershall put away his wife, EXCEPT it be for fornication,and shall marry another, committeth adultery: andwhoso marrieth her which is put away doth commitadultery.” See also Matthew 5:32.Let us consider the word EXCEPT. According toWebster, except in part, means, “to leave out or takeout: mark an exception <strong>of</strong>; omit.” Longman ContemporaryEnglish says, except “(1) uses to introduce theonly things or person in a group about which a statementis not true. (2) not to include something when youare talking about or considering a number <strong>of</strong> group <strong>of</strong>something.”No matter what your wife or husband will do, thefts,murder, cursing, blasphemy, etc., the grounds for divorceand remarriage according to the Master is fornicationor adultery [moral uncleanness]. The word except inMatthew 19:9 carries the same meaning as in John 3:3,5; Luke 13:5, 6; Matthew 18:3, etc. What do you, whoclaim to be wiser than the Master, say to these scriptures?See also Matthew 5:20.Having your own wife or your own husband givesno grounds for unfaithfulness. As honest hearts whopr<strong>of</strong>ess faith in Christ, let us answer these questionssincerely with Paul: “Know ye not that your bodies arethe members <strong>of</strong> Christ? shall I then take the members<strong>of</strong> Christ, and make them the members <strong>of</strong> an harlot?God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joinedto an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be oneflesh (I Corinthians 6:15, 16).Some advocate out <strong>of</strong> a lack <strong>of</strong> understanding thateven if your partner turns out to be a harlot, you shouldlive with him or her; that is, your wife is running aroundwith other men, or your husband with other women,and when he/she comes back you embrace him/her andcall them darling. What then is marriage? Marriage isbased on love. If you love your partner sincerely, youwill have no business with another.Nothing prevents you from forgiving your partner ifhe/she falls into the sin <strong>of</strong> adultery and becomes trulysorry, and repents and asks for forgiveness. Such a onemust be sincere and repent sorrowfully to be forgivenby God and the one who has been sinned against. Totruly repent one must turn from his evil way. “He thatcovereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confessethand forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).To the woman caught in adultery, Christ forgave her andcommanded her to “go, and sin no more” (John 8:11).Conclusion: We must not rationalize Christ’s comments;neither can we show a better way for marriagethan Christ Himself. Similarly, this position is not inany way in favor <strong>of</strong> divorce, for Christ has given us thestandard which we must lift up, but to deny the “exception”is to be jaundiced [a bitter or prejudiced state <strong>of</strong>mind] in our vision <strong>of</strong> His Word. My good people, let uslay aside our human wisdom and ideologies and sticktenaciously to the plain teachings <strong>of</strong> the Word <strong>of</strong> God.God bless you as you endeavor to do His goodwill. “IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL”This hymn was written by a Chicago lawyer, Horatio G. Spafford.You might think to write a worship song titled, “It Is Well withMy Soul,” you would indeed have to be a rich, successful Chicagolawyer. But the words, “When sorrows like sea billows roll ... It iswell with my soul,” were not written during the happiest period <strong>of</strong>Spafford’s life. On the contrary, they came from a man who hadsuffered almost unimaginable personal tragedy.Horatio G. Spafford and his wife, Anna, were pretty well-knownin 1860’s Chicago. And this was not just because <strong>of</strong> Horatio’s legalcareer and business endeavors. The Spaffords were also prominentsupporters and close friends <strong>of</strong> D. L. Moody, the famous preacher.In 1870, however, things started to go wrong. The Spaffords’ only sonwas killed by scarlet fever at the age <strong>of</strong> four. A year later, it was firerather than fever that struck. Horatio had invested heavily in realestate on the shores <strong>of</strong> Lake Michigan. In 1871, every one <strong>of</strong> theseholdings was wiped out by the great Chicago Fire.Aware <strong>of</strong> the toll that these disasters had taken on the family,Horatio decided to take his wife and four daughters on a holiday toEngland. And so, the Spaffords traveled to New York in November,from where they were to catch the French steamer “Ville de Havre”across the Atlantic. Yet just before they set sail, a last-minute businessdevelopment forced Horatio to delay. Not wanting to ruin thefamily holiday, Spafford persuaded his family to go as planned. Hewould follow on later. With this decided, Anna and her four daughterssailed East to Europe while Spafford returned West to Chicago.Just nine days later, Spafford received a telegram from his wife inWales. It read: “Saved alone.”On November 2 nd 1873, the “Ville de Havre” had collided with“The Lochearn,” an English vessel. It sank in only 12 minutes, claimingthe lives <strong>of</strong> 226 people. Anna Spafford had stood bravely on thedeck, with her daughters Annie, Maggie, Bessie and Tanetta clingingdesperately to her. Her last memory had been <strong>of</strong> her baby being tornviolently from her arms by the force <strong>of</strong> the waters. Anna was onlysaved from the fate <strong>of</strong> her daughters by a plank which floated beneathher unconscious body and propped her up. When the survivors <strong>of</strong>the wreck had been rescued, Mrs. Spafford’s first reaction was one <strong>of</strong>complete despair. Then she heard a voice speak to her, “You werespared for a purpose.” And she immediately recalled the words <strong>of</strong> afriend, “It’s easy to be grateful and good when you have so much,but take care that you are not a fair-weather friend to God.”Upon hearing the terrible news, Horatio Spafford boarded thenext ship out <strong>of</strong> New York to join his bereaved wife. Bertha Spafford(the fifth daughter <strong>of</strong> Horatio and Anna born later) explained thatduring her father’s voyage, the captain <strong>of</strong> the ship had called him tothe bridge. “A careful reckoning has been made”, he said, “and I believewe are now passing the place where the ‘de Havre’ was wrecked. Thewater is three miles deep.” Horatio then returned to his cabin andpenned the lyrics <strong>of</strong> his great hymn.It would be very difficult for any <strong>of</strong> us to predict how we wouldreact under circumstances similar to those experienced by the Spaffords.But we do know that the God who sustained them would alsobe with us.No matter what circumstances overtake us may we be able tosay with Horatio Spafford ...When peace like a river attendeth my way,When sorrows like sea-billows roll,Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,“It is well, it is well with my soul.” <strong>April</strong> 2013 Page 17

I do not knowwhat is happening.” Young and old alike are sayingthis. Sometimes you wonder if it is some sort <strong>of</strong> disease,but I don’t believe it is anything else other than oldage. Anyway, there are instances when it is wonderfulto be able to forget.Sometimes Mama would ask me to do somethingfor her when I got to town, but when I arrived backhome I’d say, “Mama, I forgot to do what you asked meto do.” She would say, “Child, thank God, we can forgetsome things.” That was good consolation to me. Shewasn’t too annoyed at my forgetfulness. It helped mea little bit.We should also forget the wrongs that have beendone to us. We should forget injuries, and don’t be piningand bringing it up all the time. We can forgive andforget. Now, that’s good forgetting, but there are somethings we can’t afford to forget.In forgetfulness, it is not all life-threatening; e.g.,if you forget to put gas in your car, you might be leftstranded on the road, but someone will come by andpick you up. To those who do not have an electric stove,you might forget to have your second propane cylinder<strong>of</strong> gas outside to turn on when the first one goes out,and you’ll end up with a half-cooked meal, but no problemthere. You might forget to renew your passport, oractually arrive at the airport and realize you left it athome and miss your flight, but you can catch the nextflight out. You might set the alarm and decide not toget up when it goes <strong>of</strong>f and are late for work. You mightforget to lock your house door and a burglar might getin. You might forget to eat your breakfast and start tohave a headache, and all <strong>of</strong> a sudden you rememberwhy you have it. These are not too serious, but thereare some things we dare not forget. This is what I wantto speak about today.I wish I had the time to read the entire chapter <strong>of</strong>Deuteronomy 4. I want you to read it after I finish thismessage so you will get the sense <strong>of</strong> what I have said.I will just use one verse and take it from there. Deuteronomy4:9, “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thysoul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thineeyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart allthe days <strong>of</strong> thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thysons’ sons.”The other verses in Deuteronomy 4 are so beautiful,but I can’t utilize the time in reading them. Read themand see for yourselves. The verses are all about Israeland all God had done for them, and the way they forgotHim. By the time one miracle was done, they were backin their idolatry or something. Let me tell you, whenyou read the history <strong>of</strong> the children <strong>of</strong> Israel, you’llrealize the patient God whom we serve. You know,everywhere they looked they saw the work <strong>of</strong> God. Youwonder how they could do anything else but serve Him.You’ll know <strong>of</strong> the awful things they did, and they paidfor what happened in those instances. They went on sobad one time that Moses lost his patience, and he wasprevented from going into the promised land. All <strong>of</strong> theseinstances are in the fourth chapter <strong>of</strong> Deuteronomy.The children <strong>of</strong> Israel were what I would call astubborn, stiff-necked bunch <strong>of</strong> people, and only Godcould handle them. In too many instances, they forgot,and that memory loss proved fatal. When we turn toother gods and forget the God who made us, we aregoing to get into trouble. This is what has happened totoo many nations today, and we need not let it happento us. It concerns me very much, and I think it concernsevery sober thinking person.I’ll just read a few lines from a clipping I have hereby Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the Russian philosopher—“More than half a century ago, while I was still a child,I recall hearing a number <strong>of</strong> older people <strong>of</strong>fer the followingexplanation for the great disasters that hadbefallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God: That’s whythis all happened.’ He went on to say, “I have spent nighfifty years working on the history <strong>of</strong> our Revolution. IfI were asked today to formulate as concisely as possiblethe main cause <strong>of</strong> the ruinous Revolution that swallowedup some sixty million <strong>of</strong> our [Russian] people, I couldnot put it more accurately than to repeat: ‘Men haveforgotten God, that’s why this all happened.’ ”Let’s reflect a little bit. We are old enough to rememberwhen we didn’t need a calendar to tell us it wasSunday. We could sense it in the atmosphere. Therewas a sacredness, a quietness, a spirit <strong>of</strong> worship, anda spirit <strong>of</strong> reverence. It made no difference what wehad to do, because it was the Lord’s day, and we honoredit. Do you know I am <strong>of</strong> the opinion that those oldpeople who honored His day and did what they did inrecognizing Him, we have reaped the benefits <strong>of</strong> thattoday? I believe it, because God tells me, “He thathonoreth Me, him will I honor.” We can depend on God’swords. We have had forefathers who have honored God,and we have been blessed as a result. But today, canwe look at this generation and see them doing the samething? I’m afraid in too many instances, no. It seemsas if too many people have gotten away from it, gottenaway from Him, and gotten away from the idea thatwe have a God to whom we have to give an account.Never have we seen more happening in the world. It iscorrect to say that the Cayman Islands, in which welive, have become a part <strong>of</strong> this world. It seems as ifanything that’s happening anywhere else now is happeninghere. We have it on a smaller scale, but we haveit, and they’re not all good things.I think <strong>of</strong> murders that’s occurring. I think <strong>of</strong> suicides.We are having this in children and adults now.It is not good. I think <strong>of</strong> the robbing, the drunkenness,the substance abuse, the waste <strong>of</strong> youth, the waste <strong>of</strong>strength, the waste <strong>of</strong> energy, the waste <strong>of</strong> intelligence,and the waste <strong>of</strong> life. Do you see these things? Am I theonly one seeing these? Are they real? Am I having anillusion? No, they are as real as the sunrise. Somethinghas happened to us.The <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong>


I think <strong>of</strong> the lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge among so manychildren where God is concerned. As children, we knewso many verses <strong>of</strong> scripture. We knew who God was;we knew who Jesus was; we knew the importance <strong>of</strong>being good; we knew the importance <strong>of</strong> prayer. We knewthe importance <strong>of</strong> thankfulness, but we’re seeing acompletely different picture, and it is not a pretty picture.I want to remind us not to forget God. It is detrimental.To forget God is life-threatening, and it is abouttime we realize this.If that Russian philosopher I referred to earliercould decide that the problem with his beautiful countrywas that the people forgot God, what are we goingto say? We might say, “Well, that was Russia.” Yes, itwas Russia, but Russia wasn’t always what we knewit to be. There was a time when they knew God, whenthey worshiped God, when they sent missionaries out,but something happened. What has happened to us?Do you know what has happened in too many instances?Greed has taken over the hearts <strong>of</strong> people. Greed! Howmuch is enough? A little more. A little more is enough,and we’re never satisfied any more. It’s more and more.We’re getting involved in this and that and the other.We’re saying that we’re doing it to make a better living,but are we making living better? May God help us.What are we headed for? What will the outcome <strong>of</strong> all<strong>of</strong> this be?We are warned in the New Testament, “Thereforewe ought to give the more earnest heed to the thingswhich we have heard, lest at any time we should letthem slip [leak out, drain away].” Too many peopleare forgetting the things which they have heard, andthey are replacing them with all sorts <strong>of</strong> philosophies.They’re replacing Jesus with all sorts <strong>of</strong> bogus people,bogus prophets, prophets who are supposed to supersedethe Christ. Isn’t that sad? Isn’t that pathetic?Isn’t that pitiful? Intelligent people are getting involvedin these things—cults, all sorts <strong>of</strong> things and ideas,and the nothing wrong syndrome. There’s nothingwrong, and all the time things are going wrong. It isnot a pretty picture. We need to take the more earnestheed. We can’t afford to forget. Too many things arehappening. If you were to ask, “Where are you spiritually?”from people who once knew God, what wouldthey say? Some would have an answer, and some won’t.They have embraced false religion. What happens inthese instances?Here is another frightening scripture: “Because theyreceived not the love <strong>of</strong> the truth, ... for this cause Godshall send them strong delusion, that they should believea lie: That they all might be damned who believed notthe truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” Whathappens here? Dear Ones, there is only method <strong>of</strong> salvation,and that comes in the truth <strong>of</strong> His Word. Believingin Christ is the only name by which we can be saved.When we put Him aside, when we substitute Him foranything else, or anyone else, we are in a delusion. Weare fooling ourselves. We are damned. May God helpus to see what is happening to the world.Have you ever heard <strong>of</strong> more corruption? Have youever heard <strong>of</strong> more churches? Have you ever seen moresin? Have you? Never has there been more religion andnever has there been more sin. We hear <strong>of</strong> corruptionin churches; we hear <strong>of</strong> things ministers are doing thatcauses your blood to curdle; we hear <strong>of</strong> corruption inbusinesses; we hear <strong>of</strong> corruption in families. Thesethings make you sick all over. What has happened?People have decided they can do it and get away withit, but they cannot hide from God.We are afraid to forget God. We can’t afford to forgetGod. We don’t want to. The child <strong>of</strong> God does not wantto forget Him. Do you know what King David said? “IfI do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to thero<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> my mouth.”If I would be ungrateful to God for His goodness tome, if I would forget His mercies to me, if I would forgetthe strength He gives me to live day by day, for Hisblessings day by day, how can I help but remember andbe thankful, knowing that it is in Him I live, and move,and have my being? Only He can give me what I need;only He can give you what you need. It makes no differencewhat we obtain in life, materially speaking.Nothing takes the place <strong>of</strong> our relationship with God,and when we come to the place that we are going t<strong>of</strong>orget Him, we are on dangerous ground. May God helpus to not be like the children <strong>of</strong> Israel in olden days.God did so many miracles and delivered them in somany instances from so many close calls, but theyturned around and made all sorts <strong>of</strong> images, worshipedthem, and decided, “This is the one that deliveredme.”Let us not be forgetful hearers. Remember thistoday: The first step on the road to ruin is to forget God,whether it is in your spiritual life, your material life,your political life, or wherever you are. No one is smartenough to direct his own steps. No one has enoughdegrees to direct his way and the way <strong>of</strong> our country.Let us get back to God. The times are serious, and theonly hope is found in Him.May God help us today to take heed to the thingswe have heard and get back to the old landmarks. MayGod bless you. Gregory E TylerHE SUBJECT at hand is one <strong>of</strong> great depth, onewhich could not be properly expounded were weto devote an entire issue <strong>of</strong> The <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong> to it.Yea, I doubt very much if all the volumes ever writtenon the subject could be considered to have exhaustedall that could be said about the will <strong>of</strong> God. Nevertheless,we would like to briefly outline some thoughts onthis beautiful truth. For a beginning, let us consider:WHO IS GOD, AND DOES HE HAVE A WILL?I realize we are living in an age in which somepeople are pr<strong>of</strong>essed atheists, and no wonder! We arenow harvesting a generation which have been taughtthe evolution theory as fact. The Bible has been removedfrom public schools, standards have disappeared, andrighteous principles have been compromised. Atheismand godlessness are the result. in the world cannot change the fact that there is a Godin heaven, that He is omnipotent, omnipresent, andomniscient (all-knowing, having infinite knowledge).“In the beginning [was] God ...” That is what the Biblesays, and I believe it! God always was, is now, and evershall be. He is eternal. He is the mighty Creator. Muchmore could be said about Him. When Moses was sent<strong>of</strong> this God <strong>of</strong> heaven to deliver His people from Egyptianbondage, Moses asked Him, “Who shall I tell themhas sent me?” God answered, “I am that I am. Tell themI AM has sent you.” Let it suffice us here to simply sayHE IS!Now, when the Lord created this earth He in nowise abandoned His creation. He had a definite planfor everything. Nature has certain laws and principles,and everything in nature obeys laws and principles. So,it is with man, His crowning creation. God does havea definite law, definite principles that mankind mustoperate within. (I’m speaking from the physical standpointat the moment.) If man doesn’t obey these lawshe must suffer the consequences. For instance, if aperson puts his hand on a red-hot stove, he is going tobe burned.However, God made man with a soul. He is differentfrom any other creation. Man has the ability to reason,to think, to choose. And God has not left us in the darkas to how He desires us to live. He does have a definitemoral law, some definite moral principles by which weare to be governed. GOD HAS A DEFINITE WILL FORMANKIND. And although the consequences for breakingthis moral law may not appear to be as immediateas those connected with the physical law—be notdeceived, Dear Reader—there are definite consequences.God’s moral law is given to be obeyed. His willis to be carried out. God’s will is not grievous. One thingwe must keep in mind is that God loves mankind, Hedesires fellowship with us, and He is definitely interestedin our welfare. He wants to keep us from thatwhich is harmful or detrimental to us. It should be ourdelight to do the will <strong>of</strong> God.He has a will for His church. It is not God’s will thatHis saved children be divided and separated into sectsand creeds. Jesus prayed in the seventeenth chapter <strong>of</strong>St. John that we all be one, as He and the Father wereone “that the world may believe.” What a wonderfulthing it would be if we would all speak the same thingand see Bible unity prevail. This is the will <strong>of</strong> God.God has a will concerning the conduct <strong>of</strong> husbands,wives, and children in the home. The home has deterioratedinto oblivion world-wide. If men and womenwould obey the will <strong>of</strong> God as given in Ephesians, chapterfive, and elsewhere, there would be no divorces, andhappiness, cooperation, contentment, and love wouldresult. Impossible? Not if the will <strong>of</strong> God were obeyed.God has a definite will in various areas <strong>of</strong> life.However, the area I would like to center our attentionon is that God has a definite will concerning everyhuman being as an INDIVIDUAL.GOD’S WILL FOR INDIVIDUALS IS:1. TO BE SAVED—We are told in II Peter 3:9 thatGod is “not willing that any should perish, but that allshould come to repentance.” This is the will <strong>of</strong> God. Godcalls every soul to repentance. You are not out <strong>of</strong> God’sPage 20will to pray that men be saved. That’s His will and theLord is faithful to call every man through His HolySpirit. Through conviction <strong>of</strong> sin, God would have everyperson repent with godly sorrow. The soul that comethto God, He will in no wise cast out. He will forgive you<strong>of</strong> your sins and make you His child.2. TO BE SANCTIFIED—“This is the will <strong>of</strong> God,even your sanctification.”—I Thessalonians 4:3. Canthere be any doubt that God would have the believersanctified? This is a second work subsequent to justification,or forgiveness <strong>of</strong> sins. There are definitely twoworks <strong>of</strong> grace, and the work <strong>of</strong> God is not complete inthe soul <strong>of</strong> man without this infilling <strong>of</strong> the Holy Ghostand eradication <strong>of</strong> the carnal nature.3. TO LIVE HOLY—“Be ye holy; for I am holy.”—I Peter 1:16. “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness,but unto holiness.” Every individual on the face<strong>of</strong> the earth is called to holiness. This is the will <strong>of</strong> God.To live holy is simply to obey all the commands <strong>of</strong> ourLord <strong>of</strong> which you have knowledge. Holiness is livingin obedience to all the known will <strong>of</strong> God. His will isrevealed to us in the Bible. Holiness itself is a vastsubject which can but be briefly mentioned here.4. TO PRAY—“Pray without ceasing.”—I Thessalonians5:17. Many other scriptures could be used hereas pro<strong>of</strong>s that it is God’s will that “men ought alwaysto pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1). A consistentprayer life is essential in the life <strong>of</strong> one who desires toknow and do God’s will.5. TO STUDY GOD’S WORD—“Study to showthyself approved unto God, a workman that needethnot to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word <strong>of</strong> truth.”—II Timothy 2:15. God speaks to us today through Hisinfinite Word. The Bible in most homes is a dust-collector,but in the home <strong>of</strong> the person who is striving todo God’s will, it should be read and studied every day.6. TO LOVE GOD AND HIS FELLOWMEN—“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy Godwith all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with allthy mind. This is the first and great commandment.And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thyneighbour as thyself. On these two commandmentshang all the law and the prophets.”—Matthew 22:37-40.All the will <strong>of</strong> God is founded on this basic truth. Godloves mankind, and He wills that mankind love Himand one another. Isn’t that beautiful? God wills this:“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do goodto them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefullyuse you, and persecute you; That ye may bethe children <strong>of</strong> your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew5:44, 45).7. TO BE AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS—“I beseechyou therefore, brethren, by the mercies <strong>of</strong> God,that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformedby the renewing <strong>of</strong> your mind, that ye may provewhat is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will <strong>of</strong>God.”—Romans 12:1, 2. Our lives should exemplify thewill <strong>of</strong> God. People should be able to point to us and saythat we are showing what is the will <strong>of</strong> God. We shouldprove to the world by our words and deeds what theperfect will <strong>of</strong> God is. This is a challenge for us all.The <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Truth</strong>


Many, many other things could be mentioned concerningthe will <strong>of</strong> God. These are just a few. I wouldexhort our readers to seek out and do God’s will. Inclosing, I would like to point out that by doing the will<strong>of</strong> God we will reap two outstanding benefits:(1) Happiness and contentment in this time world.There is a satisfaction in doing God’s will that cannotbe matched by anything else. Peace, joy, and everythingdesirable results from listening to God. This is not true<strong>of</strong> the sinner. “The way <strong>of</strong> the transgressor is hard.”(2) Eternal bliss forever. “And the world passethaway, and the lust there<strong>of</strong>: but he that doeth the will<strong>of</strong> God abideth for ever.”—I John 2:17. This world wouldbe a wonderful place if men would simply do the will<strong>of</strong> God. In heaven the angels do His will. That, in part,is what makes heaven wonderful. Jesus prayed, “Thywill be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” To knowinglytransgress God’s will is to have portion with Satan andhis demons in hell. The choice is ours to make.
