”Non plus ultra”: Sell better –
Produce more flexibly and cheaper
Because consumers prefer attractive, well-presented products, it is
well known that on the sales front it is of vital importance to win the
contest for the nicest and most attractive packaging. But it is important
to be represented on the sales shelves at least as well as the competition.
Now, with packs produced from thermoplastics by the deep-drawing
process, it is significantly easier and cheaper to ensure a particularly
attractive appearance at the point of sale.
The process developed jointly by ILLIG and P’AUER is the optimal
solution. The innovative inline technology with integrated direct-labelling
provides a significant increase in efficiency and a just-in-time production
procedure in line with the needs, and also meets the stringent hygiene
requirements. In short, it is the ”non plus ultra” for every product

Simpler and cheaper overall
handling
Thanks to the innovative deep-drawing
process, subsequent printing and bandoliering
and later decoration with sleeves or labelling
with self-adhesive material are no longer
necessary. The storage of undecorated
material and several steps in the production
process can also be dispensed with. The
overall handling process, in regard to the
production technology and logistics, is simpler
and faster, but also cheaper. The fixing of
IML labels made from thermoplastic material
onto the same base material is in accordance
with the present trend in regard to recyclability,
and thus also from the point of view of
environmental protection.
Photorealistic packaging
as a success factor
The labelling of the containers is directly integrated
into the production process. The in-mould
labelling (IML) procedure, which has been
proved over many years in the injectionmoulding
process, is now used. Labels manufactured
according to the principle of the UV
process of P’AUER AG allow perfect photorealistic
presentation of the desired motifs.
Whether photographs of ripe oranges, strawberries
or a happy family, or graphic designs,
the images have to be shown in perfect detail.
With IML labels from P’AUER AG, thanks to
an extremely fine grid (up to a maximum of
120 grid-points per cm2 ), the outstanding reproduction
of images on thermoplastic materials
is not a problem.

presentation of 4-point scripts and bar-codes.

goods. What additional broadening of
the label functionality is possible with IML?
Depending on the particular product and the
target market, labels with additional properties,
such as special scratch resistance,
soft touch, resistance to water, for example,
can be created.
Just-in-time: fast, flexible and
hygienic production
The new inline technology for form, fill and
seal equipment with P’AUER labels integrates
the labelling directly, and reduces the manufacture
to one single production process. If
several different types of product are involved,
the IML labels can be changed in a matter of
seconds – without stopping the production.
With IML in the deep-drawing process, the
pack is decorated inline and individually
during the manufacture. With decoration
that is applied only by heat, without adhesives,
it is possible to meet the most stringent
hygienic requirements. At present, production
capacity of more than 25,000 units per hour is
possible.
Saving of time and reduction of
costs included
The revolutionary procedure is especially
interesting for marketing professionals, not
only in regard to design of the packaging,
broader label functionality and just-in-time
production. Thanks to the improved wall
stability and rigidity due to the IML labels,
packs in future can be produced with thinner
foil material. Because undecorated parts no
longer have to be stored and production is
carried out inline, the logistics are simplified
and flexible manufacture is speeded up. This
results in an overall saving of time in the
manufacturing process and significantly lower
production costs.
New opportunities for new markets
In view of the new technological possibilities,
it is conceivable that disposable coffee
beakers could bear the advertising of the
suppliers of the coffee or that polypropylene
party plates could be given a clever, smart
decor. Wherever the new inline technology
and IML labels are used, already today it is
certain that the deep-drawing process is going
to become considerably more attractive.

Technological advances in thermoforming
Milestone: Inline technology in thermoforming
To achieve an outstanding packaging design
with high-resolution picture quality in a single
production step has up till now been possible
mainly with injection-moulding procedures. In
the thermoforming procedure, either loss of
quality in the photorealism, i.e. loss of
attractiveness of the pack, has to be taken
into account, or this disadvantage has to be
overcome by using expensive dual-material
packaging.
The completely new generation of form, fill
and seal lines (FFS) developed by Adolf ILLIG
Maschinenbau, now provides all the necessary
production and design advantages –
also for packs that are manufactured by

the deep-drawing process. Newly integrated
in the production procedure is direct labelling
with in-mould labels printed by the UV
process. The capacity of the new FFS equipment
is more than 25,000 units per hour.
The UV printing process of the Swiss firm,
P’AUER AG, guarantees first-class IML (inmould
labelling) labels made from polypropylene
or another thermoplastic materials with
a high-resolution picture quality (grid of up to
120 lines per cm2 , also with frequency modulation).
In the future, also with the deep-drawing
procedure, clients will therefore benefit
from an economically produced single-material
pack with very brilliant image resolution.

The clever labelling with the ILLIG equipment
also offers considerable advantages for the
production of different types of product. The
P’AUER labels produced by the inline-cut
process can be changed in a matter of seconds
and the end-products, ready for use, are
produced in a just-in-time working process.
Because the IML labels improve the stability of
the beaker, in the production of beakers
thinner foil than usual can also be used.
Besides generally cheaper production costs,
this leads to an additional reduction of costs.
Highlights: new perspectives
With the new manufacturing procedure, not
only all the wishes can practically be met in
regard to design, but also special labels can
be used which are, for example, particularly
scratch resistant and durable etc. The ”intelligent”
labels of P’AUER AG are available in
many different variants. The following options
are available: matt, scratch-resistant, dishwasher-safe,
perfumed, for precision-punching,
water-resistant, gold, silver, metallised,
soft-touch, long-life.
With a look into the future, ongoing tests with
hybrid foils and projects with other types of
packaging foil promise interesting innovations
