Brand policyThe BFV creates added value for its fruit through its brands. We guarantee a healthy, hygienic and safe product for the consumer to eat with implicit trust. This is in part because our fruit is so delicious and produced in the most environmentallyfriendly way possible. However, it is also because our associates have grown the productas a labour of love and that is the result that you see. Each brand is a synthesisof these general values and a number of extremely specific values.

A collaboration that bears fruitThe Belgian Fruit Auction (Belgische Fruitveiling/BFV) has seen enormous growth since its foundation in 1990 right up to thepresent day. This has come about through us joining forces with over 1,500 professional fruit growers while managing costsmeticulously. In addition to this, we operate a dynamic commercial strategy and invest in the best state-of-the-art equipment forcooling, pre-sorting, packing and sales systems. This enables us to offer you a flexible service, products of consummate qualityand especially competitive prices. These factors all go towards creating healthy stimuli for your growth. The results that we haveachieved also make an impact: the Belgian Fruit Auction (Belgische Fruitveiling/BFV) occupies the premier position in the Belgianfruit market with a market share of more than 50%. Approximately 60% of the products supplied from the whole country byus end up as exports.Market leader in Belgiumand trendsetter in EuropeWe didn’t grow by chanceA super-modern company with robust branchesOur headquarters have been firmly planted in Sint-Truiden, in the province of Limburg. This is not by chance since the areasurrounding Sint-Truiden is one of the most concentrated and specialised fruit-growing regions in Europe. It is in Sint-Truidenthat we have centred our transport, marketing, packing and administration. Our branch in Glabbeek is responsible for supply, refrigeration and shipping. We have housed our ultramodern pre-sorting and refrigeration complex in Zoutleeuw and we alsokeep our products perfectly chilled in Hannut. At the beginning of February 2010 the Belgische Fruitveiling (BFV, Belgian Fruit Auction) took over the former Veiling Profruco inVrasene. This merger enabled BFV to strengthen its position as market leader in Belgium. The annual pear production increasedto 105 million kilos. This means that more than 42% of all Belgian pears are sold by BFV. The central location of our division inWaasland, at the heart of the golden economic triangle of Belgium (Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels), right next to the E17 just a stone’sthrow from the ports of Antwerp, Ghent, Vlissingen and Rotterdam, offers purchasers and fruitgrowers a multitude of logisticsadvantages and is a commercial asset for the Belgische Fruitveiling. And the reason why we call ourselves Belgian? That is because we not only work together with growers from Limburg but alsofrom all the other important areas of production in Belgium, including Hageland, Waasland and Haspengouw.Sint-Truiden departmentGlabbeek departmentZoutleeuw department

Index• Apples •• Pears •How we have grownIn 1952 the Sint-Truidense Fruitcentrale was founded, a cooperative association with 34members and an annual turnover of k 329,698. Its turnover witnessed explosive growthbetween 1981 and 1989, increasing from k 10,436,317 to k 47,099,769. The HagelandAuction was established in 1946 in Brabant, a fruit market that later merged with the HasseltAuction vegetable market to become the Demerland Auction. This merger was disbanded in1987 but the branch in Glabbeek continued to operate under the Demerland Auction name.In 1989 it registered a sizeable annual turnover of k 20 million. In 1990, the Sint-TruidenseFruitcentrale and the Demerland Auction joined their forces to form a new company: theBelgian Fruit Auction (Belgische Fruitveiling/BFV). Berries, raspberries and blackberriesThe cultivation of woody small fruit has seen a sharp rise in recent years. This is because the new varieties are more to the consumer’s taste. They produce large fruit, stand up well to transport and keep well. Sales systemsThree sales systemsWhat could be more customer-friendly?The BFV wishes to sell as much as possible as, indeed, do the growers who are ourmembers. That is why we listen to what our customers really want and make ourselvesas customeroriented as possible. Our sales systems are a good example of this. As acustomer, you can make purchases in three different ways. You, yourself, can choose theone easiest for you. In addition, you can log on to our extranet with your own codeand password where you can check prices, look at your invoices, follow current orders, see your sales statistics, etc.Live at the auctionOn Tuesdays and Thursdays, registered buyers can participatein our auction hall in Sint-Truiden at the fruit auction. Thetraditional Dutch auction system is in force here via a clock. Moreover, when in season, we also auction all kinds of soft fruitin the same manner. This is based on a simultaneous systemthat all Belgian auctions operate with each other. This enablesyou to be at one auction hall and still buy from any otherauction hall as well. With our interventionCustomers can get into direct contact with the BFV’s commercial department andorder their fruit according to specifications. They are then able to choose the type offruit, its quality, the packaging, as well as the time and location of the delivery. Whatcould be more customer-friendly?Online at homeIf you prefer, you can participate in these auctions from the comfort of your armchairvia your PC and the Belgacom ISDN network. Your PC’s clock simulation will be setto the time of the clocks at the auction and you will receive the text as well asthe images and sounds from the auction online. You will be connected directly withthe auctioneer on the clock. When you log on to the system, the sales data areautomatically downloaded, enabling you to buy starting from the next lot that follows. You can view the average clock price regarding quality and your own transactionswith one click of your mouse.

Food safetyPROVIDING QUALITY FRUIT DAY IN DAY OUTINVOLVES MORE THAN JUST PLANTING AND PICKINGOUR FRUIT IS RELIABLEFruit from the BFV must be completely reliable. This is a sacrosanct principle for us. Therefore, all the fruit that is commercialised byus, complies with all applicable legal regulations and more than satisfies the prevailing and most stringent quality & hygiene controlsystems. The BFV complies with the GLOBALGAP, BRC, IFS and QS standards. At the Belgische Fruitveiling 90% of the fruit production is GLOBALGAP certified.OUR GROWERS-COOPERATIVES ADHERESTRICTLY TO THE GLOBALGAP SPECIFICATIONSAll BFV growers grow according to the GLOBALGAP specifications,a quality system set up by European wholesale distributors that rests upon the following pillars:• TRACING & REGISTRATION: both the plots of land, the crop-protection agents and the harvest areregistered accurately. This means that the fruit can be traced with complete accuracy along every step of the way.• INTEGRATED PRODUCTION: continuous efforts are made to maintain the natural balance in the orchard.• HEALTH & SAFETY: we strive each day to ensure the health and safety of every employee.• ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: it goes without saying that we aim to place the minimum burden onthe environment.• SELF-AUDITING & COMPLAINTS MANAGEMENT: form the basis for continuous improvement.ENVIRONMENTAL MINDED CULTURE:NO ECONOMY WITHOUT ECOLOGYIn fact this is only logical because both share the same root ‘eco’ which derives from the Greek ‘oikos’ (‘house’ and, therefore, the environment around us). We advocate minimum pressure on the environment by integrated production methods. Integratedproduction is based on the natural balance in the orchard. To this end, the grower employs useful organisms against their naturalenemies. Concrete examples: in a new planting, predatory mites are brought in. These spread themselves out liberally and feed onthe eggs of the harmful red spider mite and rust mite. Aphids are eradicated by ladybirds and earwigs, caterpillars by birds, pearaphids by predatory bugs.BRC, IFS & QSTo safeguard the quality, hygiene and food safety at the BFV itself, all activities at the auction are set upin compliance with the English BRC standard, the French-German IFS standard and the German QS system. As wellas traditional auction activities, such as inspection, storage, buying and selling, other processes such as ULO cooling,pre-sorting and packing centre are also set up according to these standards. This is why the Belgische Fruitveilingattaches a lot of importance to the following pillars that are part of the day-to-day company policy.• Continuous monitoring of the CCPs (Critical Control Points).• A systematised residue monitoring plan.• All BFV employees are aware of their responsibilities.• All BFV products are traceable at every step both upstream and downstream.• Corrective and preventive measures form the basis for continuous improvements at the BFV.

OUR FRUIT IS AN OPEN BOEKWhen dealing with us, the consumer knows straightaway where the fruit has come from. We feel that this creates confidence. Our inspectors and computers provide a solid vehicle allowing complete transparency with regard to BFV fruit as it passesthrough the entire process. Following a product from the beginning to the end, from grower to point of sale, requires awatertight registration system. As well as the classic tracing system, whereby origin and product features are registered bymeans of pallet-box cards, crate cards, plastic covers and labels, the BFV also has an integrated computer-controlled tracingsystem. With the modern supply registration system via Internet, all supplied pallets and pallet boxes are immediately identifiedupon arrival at the BFV with a label that has been given a unique barcode number (= SSCC - Serial Shipping Container Code). The origin (information on the grower), the time of delivery and the product features of each unique SSCC that is allocated arerecorded in the central computer system. A wireless network connecting all BFV departments registers all movements of fruitand vegetables within the BFV via barcode scanners, up to the moment they are loaded by logistics employees. Thanks to this technology, upstream and downstream tracing at BFV is guaranteed at all times.WE CONTROL OURSELVES AND HAVE OURSELVES CONTROLLEDInternal controlWe subject our fruit to our own stringent controls throughout the whole process. Our inspectors check the fruit on delivery to the auctionon the basis of product specifications for optical quality (colour, visible residue, strange objects), organoleptic quality (firmness, peel quality),correct identification (tracing) and packaging. Via a systematised residue monitoring plan, samples of the fruit are taken every day. Theyare analysed by an accredited laboratory. We also systematically take fruit samples upon entry and during storage in our ULO cold stores, which are then inspected in our own laboratory for firmness, sugar content, diameter, colour and taste. This is how we monitor our productat every stage and thanks to this, quality and food safety is ensured continuously and optimally.External controlBoth BFV growers and the BFV itself are regularly inspected and audited for correct compliance with GLOBALGAP, BRC, IFS & QSby accredited independent inspection bodies. At the BFV we are convinced that CUSTOMER SATISFACTION can only be safeguarded by CONTINOUSIMPROVEMENT of both the internal processes at the BFV and the cultivation processes at the BFVgrowers, day in day out.

Pre-sortingNo detail escapes the attention of IQS(Intelligent Quality Sorting)The IQS system assesses apples for their size, bloom and base colour and also for their skin quality. It is composedof an ingenious combination of computers and advanced digital colour and infra-red cameras. We have written thecomputer’s sorting programs. We based our ideas for this exceptionally precise and objective inspection on currentconsumer demands and market requirements.HOW DOES IQS OPERATE?• Each piece of fruit is photographed 72 times: 36 times in infra red, 36 times in colour.• Afterwards the computer calculates the coloured percentage of the surface and compares thephotographs with a pre-programmed databank. Thus it is able to recogniseall deviations, and each grower is given the same objective treatment.• This detailed job is performed at an extraordinary tempo. Some 20 tonsor 1 full trailer passes before its all-seeing eye per hour.Exact sorting yields a wealth of benefitsThis ultramodern pre-sorting system offers both grower andcustomer alike nothing but benefits. We sell the fruit immediately in the correct packagingIn this way, we avoid considerable additional costs from interim packaging, further sorting and cold storage. We can deal with sudden surges in demandThis installation enables us to sort a large capacity in a short time and thus solve any urgent problem immediately. We sort large batches extraordinarily quicklyThanks to IQS, all apples in a particular quality category conform to identical conditions irrespective of the batch, grower or time of sorting. Moreover, the fast throughput of sorting guarantees better retention of quality as well.We take industry’s demands better into accountAs a result of pre-sorting, we get a good picture of the percentage of fruit from the new harvest that will be suitablefor industrial use as early as at the picking stage. Consequently, we are able to make a prognosis of the quantity ofindustrial fruit in the cooling units and are better able to take industry’s demands into account.Furthermore, this enables us to give added value to the qualities A3++ and A4++ of industrial fruitby sorting them in advance as well. And that counts considerably against the costs of pre-sorting.

PreservationGood quality needs to be fosteredwith the best preservation methodsOwing to U.L.O. or Ultra Low Oxygen, we are able to keep apples and pears, which are bothharvested in autumn, for a whole year without any loss in quality. This allows us to stock ourcustomers with quality fruit all year round.Sint-Truiden departmentIn the picking stage, fruit is taken immediately to the cold stores where it is stored underoptimum conditions. They are stacked by variety (according to differing storage conditions) incold rooms of ±100,000 kg. Our preservation complexes have been spread out geographicallyin order to cool the fruit as quickly as possible (Sint-Truiden, Glabbeek, Zoutleeuw, Hannut,Vrasene).Glabbeek department Zoutleeuw department Hannut department Vrasene departmentUnder the U.L.O. conditions, we set temperature, oxygen and CO 2levelsin a balanced combination thus halting the fruit’s ageing process. Consequently, the BFV is able to store some 63 million kg.The fruit is also kept perfectly chilled between the times of supply and shipping, especially in ourgigantic cold waiting stores alongside the loading bays. Apples and pears are kept separately becausethe ethylene in the apples would otherwise cause the pears to ripen too quickly and because thestorage conditions are different for both fruits. Especially for strawberries and other soft fruits we haveseparate wet throughput systems that chill the fruit faster and preserve it in greater humidity. This ishow we are able to guarantee that the chilling process remains unbroken.

BFV in numbersThe Belgische Fruitveiling cvba (BFV) is the largest Belgian cooperation of fruitgrowers, with a market share of 50%.Our cooperation works together with 1500 members from all the important areas of production in Belgium. Our headquarters have been firmly planted in Sint-Truiden, one of the most concentrated and specialised fruitgrowingregions in Europe. Our divisions in Glabbeek and Vrasene are responsible for supply, preservation and shipping. We havehoused our ultramodern pre-sorting and preservation complex in Zoutleeuw and we also keep our products perfectly chilledin Hannut.
