IF NOT THIS,WHAT ELSE WILL ??“Woman is not man’s plaything”- Mahatma GandhiWhile the speaker of these words wouldbe bleeding tears in heaven, the childrenof his land are going about their usualexistence. The nation was rocked by protests againstthe gang rape of a 23 year old girl in the nation’scapital, and like any other cradle which stops afterrocking, India has resumed to normalcy. Here, wortha mention is the amazingly short civic memory ofthe Indian public (don’t heave, it also includes meand you). How many times in the past has such aheart wrenching incident happened and gone unnoticed? How many times in the not very far pasthave heinous rape crimes been forgotten? The gangrape of a nun in north India and a few other handfulof incidents come to my mind but I wouldn’t like topump statistics into this piece of writing. Let’s let thepast rest, talking about the present – after the Delhiincident a plethora of sex crimes were reported indailies and channels all around India, it was as if thespotlights had suddenly shifted to rape crimes. As ifone brutal rape – turned murder wasn’t enough, therapists were trying to prove that they would havetheir way and they made their statement with an evilgrin and the successive reports which came in afterthe Delhi bus incident stand testimony to whateverI just said.In this land where the apostles of peace such asMahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa once walked, itis nothing less than ironical to see lust thirsty animalsroam. If hunger drives the four-legged beasts ofthe jungle, it is testosterone that drives their twoleggedconcrete jungle counterparts!! Apostles ofSatan don’t take the cover off the night or sanctityof seclusion to satisfy their hunger, instead thesemonsters commit the crimes in public places in daylight and walk among us without fear. The long armof the law which hurts other life offence committersappears to caress the rapists. I am not a critic of thejudicial system and neither am I qualified to questionit, but I cannot help but point out the in-adeptnessof the penal code on tightening the noose aroundthese people’s necks. In my personal opinion, keeping the recent incident in mind, I feel that thereis a gaping hole in the law system and it should befilled with proper law amendments rather than befilled with SYMPATHY which nobody is in need of.“Rape” in itself is a taboo word in Indian culture. You aren’t allowed to utter it out loud in public, youaren’t allowed to discuss it in front of your familyand in a culture such as ours which deems sex astotal taboo, talking about RAPE can put a person inbad books. Despite all these barriers and unwrittentaboo laws, the people of this strange land managedto brave the odds and raise their voice against therapists and hoped against hope that it would ringbells to the snoring politicians. (India Awakening???) What started off as a moaning initially, withstudents group protesting and assembling at publicsites, turned into a feeble cry when activists andwomen’s rights groups joined hands and becamea full-fledged clarion call only when Hundredsmarched on streets, by this time rape incidents werecropping up so abundantly that, owing to the mediaattention, Rape and related protests had become aphenomenon! The Delhi Phenomenon (one that it had become),continued to gain strength feeding off the temporaryanger of the Indian public (with a population whichcries to soap operas and relents in anguish to thecricket team’s losses, inhumane rape issues wouldeffortlessly qualify to incite anger) and gainingmomentum, the country was walking tight ropebetween chaos and total explosion of riots. Thiscalled for the Illusionists – None other than the menand women who are at the helm of the nation, cladin white clothes and call parliament their workplaceto think of stringent laws.Rape in itself is massacre of a woman’s self, thesheer un-holiness of violating a woman’s psyche isuntellable. The 6 satanic men who were aboard thebus not only raped the unsuspecting girl, but alsoannihilated her body and destroyed it beyond repair. If this barbarous, gross, bone-chilling act doesn’tqualify these men for hanging, what else will?. Thestrong words in this piece of writing might do wellto appeal to your heart, but strong words haven’tstopped criminals in the past, nor will they in thefuture. Only strong action can stop the beasts – thekind of strong action which I see coming soon in thismysterious land.S.Y.A. AASIM SHERIFF ( I ECE)67

A day of the World Red Cross Societies!!We the Youth Red Cross members celebrated the Red Cross Day with full enthusiasm, igniting the youthminds to care of their own health and of others, to serve the society and to maintain a good friendship withall the people of the world. It is not just the celebration but a starting point to bring in a dramatic change inthis world. The Red Cross Day in KCT, unlike other functions marks a difference by planting service seeds inthe minds of kind hearted KCTians. The students of YRC KCT, on this day made a rightful decision, not onlyto serve their own material needs but also to serve the needy, as they believe that only if there is equalityamong the people in the world there will be peace and harmony. To mark the celebration we showcasedtwo banners near four corner containing the motto and the services of Youth Red Cross. We also displayedin the notice board of all first year classes to ensure that they understand the need for the establishment ofYRC. The poster also contains the motto, fundamental principles and the activities of YRC. It is also one suchremarkable day making all the KCTians know that, knowingly or unknowingly they are all the members ofYRC, once they join this college. Thus, Red Cross Day is celebrated with a message……..When there is a need …. When there is a crisis… When thesituation arises … There we are … The Youth Red Cross.19
