Outings Classifications 

The Chapter Safety Committee has established 

classifications for all Chapter sponsored outings 

to differentiate the levels of skill required 

of participants and the event leaders. This 

classification does not relate to outing strenuousness 

C For outings conducted by a non-Sierra 

Club entity (i.e. Concessionaire) 

O Applies to a variety of uncomplicated 

outings (i.e. city walks, bike rides, trail hikes, 

backpacking) May involve simple off trail 

hiking not requiring navigation skills. 

I Includes outings that involve crosscountry 

travel where navigation is necessary. 

Rougher ground than “O” outings may be traversed, 

and the use of hands for balance may be 

necessary. Includes outings that have snow 

travel or skiing on easy terrain. Climbing level 

“Class 2” terrain. 

M, E, T These are more skilled outings 

which require moderate to specialized skills, 

including climbing. Check with the Safety 

Committee for specific clarification.

Join us for a day in the Sequoia National Forest 

just south of Lake Isabella. Lightner will be Rt. 2, 

10 miles round trip, 4500’ gain on motorcycle trail 

and cross-country. Bald Eagle is 1 ½ miles, 600’ 

gain on use trail and cross-country. Other routes

Crystal Cove State Beach Provisional Hike, 4 

miles, 100’ gain, Enjoy an autumn walk along the 

beach. We will walk along the bluff to Pelican Point, 

then head down the path to walk back along the 

beach to the cottages and tide pools. There will be 

an optional lunch at Ruby’s Shake Shack. Meet at 

9:30 AM on the east(inland) side of PCH in the 

parking lot at Los Trancos. Wear comfortable walking 

shoes. There might be some rocky beach to

Explore the historical Hollywood and Whitley 

Heights neighborhoods. This is a moderate 4 mile, 

600’ walk that involves climbing hills and staircases.

Hollywood Heritage Museum, 2100 N. Highland

"Wild Alaska - Up Close and Personal -- the small 

cruise ship advantage" with Terry Gardner, travel 

writer for the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune 

and Dallas Morning News. Terry will tell us about 

her recent trip with InnerSea Discoveries aboard a 

cruise ship small enough to explore the narrow 

passages and secluded fjords of Alaska’s rugged 

coastline. She'll discuss embracing the wilderness 

and playing outside along Alaska’s rugged coastlines. 

She hiked, snorkeled, kayaked and did stand 

up paddleboarding. She saw amazing wildlife in 

their own element. - humpback whales bubble net 

feeding and lunge feeding and baby whales

eaching in Icy Strait and a pack of wolves confronting 

a coastal brown bear on the beach at Tidal 

Inlet in Glacier Bay after the young bear came too

. Want to have the kiddos enjoy nature and bake 

cookies in the mountains? Have kids play twister 

while you sit in front of the fireplace sipping coffee? 

And don’t put away the Halloween costumes. Let’s 

have a costume party. Join us for a weekend of 

easy family hikes, nature, crafts and kids activities. 

Enjoy delicious food and a weekend full of relaxation, 

laughter and fun on Mt. Baldy. On Saturday, 

we will be hiking 1-2 miles in the local mountains 

alongside a stream. Splashing in the stream and 

water play are part of the deal! The kids will help us 

bake cookies in the evenings. On Sunday, we will 

be going to the San Antonio waterfall, and enjoy 

some more fun activities together. Harwood Lodge 

was built in 1930 as a memorial to Aurelia S. Har-

wood, past president of the Sierra Club and Angeles 

Chapter leader. It is located in the San Gabriel 

Mountains, above Pomona, on Mt. Baldy (Mt. San 

Antonio). The elevation is 6300 feet. The lodge facilities 

include a picturesque, large, 3-story rustic 

stone building with a wonderful wooden dance 

floor, separate dining room, kitchen, two cozy fireplaces 

on the 2nd floor, gorgeous views, and relaxing 

porches. In the men's and women's and family 

dormitories you will have bunk beds with mattresses 

(please bring your own sheets, pillow and 

sleeping bag or comforter), hot showers, and flush 

toilets. Lots of space for the youngsters to run 

around. And yes, there is wi-fi, if you absolutely 

must be connected. If you are ready to get the kids 

away from the city and enjoy the solitude of clear 

mountain air and blue skies, this is the trip for you. 

As we always do, all participants will need to help 

with the cooking and cleaning and the kids activities. 

It is going to be a fun, social, and amazing trip 

you will never forget! The cost of the trip is $40 for 

current Sierra Club members (12 years and older) 

and $ 55 $ for non-members.(12 years and older). 

Price for kids younger than 12 year old is $35 for 

members and $50 for nonmembers. The fee includes 

lodging, crafts, snacks, 1 breakfast, and 1 

dinner. There is the option of lodging on Friday 

night Nov 9th after 7 pm for an additional $15 (12 

years old and older) and $10 (younger than 12 

y.o.). There is one private family room with bunk 

beds (in addition to the dormitories mentioned 

above) Families that come on Friday will have priority. 

All kids need to be accompanied by a parent

Pits. This is our longest section, which is approximately

Pits Architectural and Historical Walk 

Socially paced, 4 mi rt. with many stops. “Meet me 

at 3rd & Fairfax!” This is the trademark phrase for 

the Farmers Market and our meeting place. We 

stroll through a residential neighborhood with diverse 

architecture and head to the Los Angeles 

County Museum of Art (LACMA), La Brea Tar Pits 

and Museum Row. Our walk takes us to a section 

of the Berlin Wall, under the “Big Rock,” through 

the lamppost forest of “Urban Light,” past woolly 

mammoths and saber-toothed cats, and a peek in 

the windows of a 50s Googie-style coffee shop now 

famous as a movie location. Leaving Museum 

Square and the Miracle Mile, we cut through 1940s 

Park La Brea and Pan Pacific Park, ending at the 

Grove and Farmers Market just in time for lunch.

Point and Muir Peak (4688 

Hike the Sam Merrill trail to the historic railway and 

resort area at Echo Mtn, then up Castle Canyon to 

Inspiration Point and on to Muir Peak. We will return 

by the Middle Merrill trail. Trip is a total of 12 

miles with 2900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an 

overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), 

which begins January ’13. Subjects include safe 

mountain travel, map & compass and wilderness 

first aid. Meet 9:00 am at the North end of Lake 

Street at the corner of Lake and Loma Alta Street 

in Alta Dena by the “Gate”. This is a residential

each Outing and cannot be eliminated without destroying

Explore the wilds of Patagonia on this 17 day active 

adventure. We meet in Buenos Aires and then fly to 

southern Argentina. Crossing into Chile, we spend 5 

days hiking in the spectacular glaciated landscape of 

Torres del Paine National Park. In Argentina, we travel 

by boat on Lago Argentino to view the massive terminus 

of the Perito Moreno Glacier. A side trip takes us to a 

local Patagonia Estancia (ranch) on the pampas. We then 

embark on 3 days of hiking to explore the several beautiful 

lagunas (lakes) around El Chalten and hike to Laguna 

Torre to get a view of the famous Mt. Fitzroy and 

Glacier Grande, weather permitting. You will see condors,

trip. Leave early Friday morning for a 3 night stay in 

Yosemite's winter wonderland. This is the best time to 

be in the park. The air is fresh & clear; the crowds are 

few & there is always enough snow at Badger Pass. Skiers 

& non-skiers both welcome. There will be ample 

time to do whatever you wish: ski snowshoe, hike, iceskate,

Visit Yosemite National Park before the large summer 

crowds and the waterfalls should be at their best. Tram 

tour of the giant trees at the Mariposa Grove. Day outing 

to Tuolumne Meadows with optional hike. Another optional 

hike on the other day in the valley. In addition to 

the most outstanding scenery, there are museums, a visitor's 

center, restaurants, a pioneer cemetery, gift shops, 

ranger programs etc.
