NEWSCELEBRATING A CENTENARY OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATING YOUNG WOMENPRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Issue 12 – 9 August 2013Dear Parents, Students and Friends of OLSH,World Youth Day 2013...It is great to be back at OLSH after the wonderful adventure of the World YouthDay/Saints of Lima Pilgrimage. During the last three weeks, Year 11 students– Shenede, Ruby, Jordan, Lexie, Sarah and Savita, Youth Ministry Coordinator,Mrs Ashleigh Barker and myself have shared a life changing experience –an experience of joy and hardship, connection to the universal Church and apilgrimage of faith. We have had a journey to the heart and each one of ushave encountered the face of Christ. Transformation is not easy to describe,it’s lived - the girls’ comments and reflections will give you an indication of theheart of the trip.Important DatesTuesday, 13th AugustStaff Development DayWednesday, 14 th —Friday,16 th AugustYear 11 RetreatFriday, 13th SeptemberOLSH Centenary DinnerDanceThere were many aspects to our pilgrimage, however I would like to focus on the weekend of World YouthDay and the Pope’s homily on World Youth Day, Sunday 28 July. We began the Saturday with a 9km pilgrimwalk from Aussie Central to Copacabana Beach where we participated in the Vigil sleeping out on the beachwith 3 and half million pilgrims (over 350 pilgrims were from Sydney Catholic Schools). Mass for World YouthDay was celebrated by Pope Francis. In his homily, the Holy Father reflected on three key ideas in relation tothe WYD theme from the gospel of Matthew“Go and make disciples of all nations!”Firstly we are to “go” – there are no bordersor limits to where Jesus sends us.The Gospel is for everyone and we are togo and bring Christ to everyone we meet.God seeks us and wants us to know hislove, mercy and compassion. The Pope’smessage to the young people was thatthe Church needs you to GO, the churchneeds the JOY of young people.Secondly, Pope Francis told us not to beafraid because Jesus never leaves usalone. We are with the communion ofsaints both in heaven and on earth. Weare not in isolation and are called to live incommunity. The Pope also had a specialmessage for the older pilgrims – we need toaccompany our young people with generosity and joy.Thirdly, he spoke to us about being willing to serve. There is an invitation to discover the song of your life– allowing our lives to sing the song of Jesus. We are to serve and wash feet as did Jesus.OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: info@olshkensington.catholic.edu.au w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE (Continued)The Pope finished his homily with the following – “Jesus is counting on you, God is counting onyou and so is the Pope”. His words were extraordinary as we stood on the beach amidst so manypilgrims – the hope for our young people and church was real, you could almost touch it... I knew whywe had come on such a journey.PostscriptIn the shanty towns of Lima, Peru we were given the privilege to serve and participate in missionwork. Our practical support included building cement steps into the slope of the Andes mountainrange on which the town has been built: forming a people chain where we carried buckets of rocksand dirt to excavate for easier access to higher places; painting a kindergarten and a meal kitchen forthe locals. Whilst our time was short, the impact on the community was huge and I am sure that thisexperience and perspective will live forever in the hearts of our girls.Special thank you to Ms Rodwell who was acting Principal and Mrs O’Farrell as acting Assistant Principalfor leading the College during the time we were on pilgrimage. I look forward to the rest of theterm and am very grateful to be back.Ms Libby DennyPrincipalYOUTH MINISTRY—WORLD YOUTH DAY—SAINTS OF LIMA PILGRIMAGE“Go and Make Disciples of all Nations” Mt 28:19Youth Ministry at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College is all about empowering young people tolive as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. This year there has been a particular opportunityfor our OLSH girls to engage in this challenge by Jesus: World Youth Day. Six students undertookthis challenge on behalf of the OLSH community, in World Youth Day Rio.I was privileged to travel with our College Principal, Ms Elizabeth Denny and six OLSH Pilgrims;Shene’de Wells, Alexandra Smith, Sarah Buxton, Savita Kanera, Jordan Kilby and Ruby Bannatyne,on the Saints of Lima Pilgrimage throughout Brazil, Peru and Argentina. We travelled toWorld Youth Day to serve in the mission of “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19). Studentslearnt that Jesus is speaking to each one of us, saying: “It was wonderful to take part inWorld Youth Day, to live the faith together with young people from the four corners of the earth, butnow you must go, now you must pass on this experience to others.”The pilgrimage began with the trip to Lima and a mission component in the shantytowns of the Peruviancity. There, we had the opportunity to participate in catechesis and a dental awareness programmein a local high school. We were also able to partake in the building of steps, a communitycentre and a community kitchen in the suburb of Pamplome. These few days certainly opened oureyes: although the extreme poverty was confronting, the chance to give something to another communitywas an invaluable opportunity for our students. The experience of mission work certainly put into context the message of the Holy Father which wewere to receive in Rio in the following days. Jesus is calling on us to be a disciple with a mission!Three simple ideas have remained with us after journeying together: Go, do not be afraid, andserve. For our OLSH girls this message emphasises, we must go out, to learn about the world welive in. We must not be afraid of going against the grain and standing up for what we believe inand the work we do. And finally, we must serve; serve humbly through the works of social justice.OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: info@olshkensington.catholic.edu.au w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au

WORLD YOUTH DAY—SAINTS OF LIMA PILGRIMAGE (Continued)During the pilgrimage it was clear that new friendships have been shaped within the group and asense of unity amongst our new companions has been formed. Each student entered into their ownpersonal journey as well as a journey together as a group. This became particularly clear during ouropportunities for reflection during the retreat at Iguazu Falls. In our hearts, we know World YouthDay has been one of the most important experiences of our lives and has been a great support to ourfaith formation. After the rejuvenating and inspiring experiences of World Youth Day, I believe thatour six young OLSH women are ready for the challenge ‘to go and make disciples of all nations’.Overall it was an experience that I myself will always cherish and I know the students will never forget. For the rest of the year, youth ministry at OLSH College will have opportunities for our six pilgrims tospread and engage in the mission of being young disciples. Other students within the College willalso have the opportunity to engage in prayer, catechesis, social justice, and advocacy.Mrs Ashleigh BarkerYouth Ministry Coordinator2013 OLSH PILGRIMS WORLD YOUTH DAY REFLECTIONS2013 OLSH Pilgrims World Youth Day ReflectionsRuby Bannatyne: My pilgrimage to Rio De Janeiro Brazil was an amazing trip. The people I havemet, the challenges I have faced and opportunities I have been blessed with have shifted my perceptionof the world and my outlook on faith. It would be fair to say that as I set foot on our firstplane trip, faith was not a priority in my life: it was always pushed to the side. If this trip has taughtme anything, it’s that religion provides tremendous support and guidance through all aspects of life.Meeting so many faith-filled individuals has inspired me to go and make Disciples of all nations, asMatthew's Gospel teaches us. The journey through Peru, Brazil and Argentina I will never forget. The highlights from this journey include meeting the primary school students in the shanty towns inLima, building stairs within the shanty towns, visiting the breathtaking Machu Picchu, waking up onCopacabana beach in Rio for the final Mass with 3.5 million others, and finally experiencing the tripwith strangers who inevitably become like a family. This pilgrimage was a trip of a lifetime, it wascertainly not easy, and we were without doubt pilgrims: not tourists. Never again will I take forgranted a hot shower, or my family. Despite it being hard the real challenge in myself was realisinghow grateful I am for my life and opportunities I am blessed with. More than anything, seeing immensepoverty made me feel incredibly selfish. There are many people in the world that do nothave food to eat, a place to sleep or a family to cherish them. Overall there is nothing I wouldchange about the journey, other than the fact that I wish my friends and family saw it all with me. Iwill never forget the message from Pope Francis: “Go, be not afraid, and serve.” Overall, I will notforget the people I met, friends I made, life experiences I gained or the people who made it all possible. The only thing I say with regret is that it’s over and all that is left are the memories and greatphotographs. It certainly was a trip of a lifetime.Sarah Buxton: World Youth Day 2013 was the best experience of my entire life. From participatingin mission work, sleeping on the floor, walking 9kms just to get to Mass and many other hardships,I think everyone on this journey, including myself, has become a different person and we allhave made relationships with people that are like no other, and will never be forgotten. On thispilgrimage I learnt many lessons: the main ones were found whilst doing the mission work in Lima,Peru. During this mission work I felt so spoilt and ungrateful for my own life in Australia. I learnt toappreciate everything, and to always trust God. From this journey Christ has sent me to open mymind about faith as well as to educate the youth of today, through my experiences and what I havelearnt. I want to educate people to be more involved in the Church, and to motivate others to becomedisciples of all nations.OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: info@olshkensington.catholic.edu.au w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au

2013 OLSH PILGRIMS WORLD YOUTH DAY REFLECTIONS (Continued)Savita Kanera: A few weeks ago a group of OLSH pilgrims journeyed to South America for WorldYouth Day. We began the trip with an intense week in Lima, where I experienced the face of Jesusin the students at the shantytown school of Our Lady of Mercy. It was an experience that reallyopened my eyes to the richness of religion in these children’s lives as well as their joy and gratitudefor what they had, even though it was so little. The school of Our Lady of Mercy had no computersor smart boards, but when our group acted out the parable of the Lost Sheep the children truly enjoyedit. Their delight at our arrival and their disappointment of our departure (running after ourbus) made me feel ashamed for the things we take for granted and our lack of appreciation. Theweek in Rio was exciting and we were all inspired by the words of Pope Francis, as he spoke to usabout the need to help others in our community and to accept all as we have no right to judge. Itwas also amazing to be celebrating Mass and adoration with millions of other Catholics fromaround the world. It made me feel part of an incredible movement of young people, and made meexperience something unique even through all the illness and tiredness!Jordan Kilby: My pilgrimage to World Youth Day Rio has given me opportunities that I am unlikelyto experience ever again. The theme was ‘go make disciples of all nations’, and that is exactlywhat I now feel equipped to do. My time in South America presented me with many situationswhere I shared my faith with others, and now upon returning back to school I feel compelled to dothe same, to try and put the faith that I have received into the hearts of all those who didn’t makethe journey. I have rediscovered my place as a disciple of Jesus, and through my strengthenedfaith I can share this with the community. As well as strengthening my faith, I have been taughtsomething by everyone I have met. From the children at the school we visited, I learnt that perceptionand state of mind is key to optimism. Also from the pilgrims on Copacabana Beach I learnt toembrace my faith. Furthermore Pope Francis taught me to leave my doubts behind and to go andbe a disciple. This pilgrimage was as much a spiritual journey as it was physical. My view of theworld has changed, I know I have the power to change, and I feel as though I have the strength tomake a difference in the future.Lexie Smith: Through this trip I have become more independent and learned not to rely as muchon my parents as I once did. I have become aware of how truly lucky I am. Seeing shantytowns inLima, Peru has made me appreciate what I have. I have become more grateful for the opportunitiesI have in Australia and even the opportunity I was given to go to WYD Rio. I have learned howbig the Catholic faith is, by standing on Copacabana Beach surrounded by pilgrims from all overthe world. This trip truly defined us as pilgrims and not tourists. One hardship was that we wereconstantly wearing dirty clothes and having little to no access to washing machines. Another challengewas walking back to hotels when public transport was full and sleeping on the floor in WYDRio week. These moments truly enforced the fact that we were pilgrims. This journey helped meto understand what Christ has sent me to do, I aim to be a missionary through volunteer workwithin the College. In doing this I feel I am being more involved in my Catholic community and beinga disciple of Jesus. Overall the trip was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I havemade friends that I will hopefully have for life.Shene’de Wells: World Youth Day was one of the most amazing experiences I have witnessed. Imet many different people and made many different friends that I will keep in contact with for therest of my life. On this journey I witnessed a lot, we helped young children in Lima and built stairsfor their community. I feel after this journey I am more connected with God and with my faith. AfterWorld Youth Day I have seen how it is in different places and seen how lucky I really am. My goalfor the future is to spread the word of God and help people that are in need. I also aim to not takeanything for granted, and strive to always put others before myself. Overall, the best part wassharing Mass with Pope Francis (Papa Francisco). Even though it was in a different language itwas made special by the people that you were surrounded with sharing their faith with you andseeing how happy people are to be connected with God.OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: info@olshkensington.catholic.edu.au w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au
