I! have! recently! been! to! Wagga! to! see! our!daughter!at!her!March!Out!Parade!taking!place!at!Kapooka!before!she!is!moved!to!Puckapunyal!for!further!training!and!then!going!to!Townsville!later!on!in!the!year.!For!those!past!QANTAS!employees!who!followed!me!on!the!club! run! to! Burrawang! Village! Hotel! and! were! upset! that!the! number! plate! on! the! Triumph! was! 2mm! off! level,! I!would!like!to!report!that!great!effort!has!gone!into!making!sure!it!is!now!in!line!with!the!top!of!the!panel!it!is!bolted!to.!In!doing!this!I!found!it!is!still!not!level!with!the!ground!and!investigation!has!revealed!that!the!body!of!the!Triumph!is!a!little!off!level.!This!remains!an!item!for!further!investigation!after!the!Cootamundra!run!is!completed.!In!the!last!President’s!Report!you!will!have!read!that!Garry!and!Noelene!were!off!overseas!for!a!while,!well!its!good!to!see! they! have! had! a! great! trip! and! a! safe! return.! Keith! met! his!‘angel’! by! chance,! in! Wollongong.! Although! Bundle!informed! him! that! she! was! ‘not! available’,! Keith’s!persistence! paid! off! and! they! were! married! a! short!time!later,!living!in!Mollymook!where!they!had!a!most!happy!and!content!life!together.!Keith! and! Bundle! were! active! members! of! the! Car!Club.! They! were! an! elegant! couple,! quietly! attending!most! functions! and! always! entering! into! the! spirit! of!theme!events.!Earlier! this! year! Bundle’s! illness! began! and! she!approached!it!head!on,!fighting!a!courageous!but!short!battle.!We!learnt!of!her!passing!on!the!5 th !September!2013.!Bundle! was! one! of! the! most! gentle,! thoughtful,! kind!and! considerate! people! that! you! would! ever! want! to!meet! and! befriend.! Gary! Whitwell’s! Ford! Fairmont!and!Colin!and!Dawn!Spicer’s!Ford!Capri.!We!went!through!Kangaroo!Valley!and!it!had!a!very!big!Fair!on.!Some!stopped!for!coffee,!others!parked!at!the!ambulance!station!and!had!their!coffee!and!slices!there.!Meurys!made!a!scrumptious!raspberry!slice!and!offered!it!around.!Barry! and! Dot! missed! the! turnoff! but! arrived! a! few!minutes!late.!We!were!off!again!and!drove!up!the!mountain!toward!Burrawang.!All!cars!performed!very!well!and!we!finally!arrived!at!the!Pub.!The!Publican!had!two!tables!reserved!for!us!overlooking!a!nice!garden!under!a!canopy,!which!was! a! little! cool! but! very! nice.! A!few!of!the!club!members! found! a! nice! table! in! the! sun! and! settled!there.!We!did!have!a!little!problem!as!we!could!not!find!Barry!and! Dot,! and! found! out! when! they! finely! arrived! that!they! missed! the! turn! and! continued! torward! Milton! Ulladulla! Vintage!and! Classic! Car! Club’s! publicity!officer! came! face! to! face! with! the!new! technology! that! will! dominate!our! car! world! as! we! know! it! at!present.! ! ! ! Being! dragged,! kicking!and! screaming,! out! of! the! age!of!coils,! spark! plugs,!dynamos! and!starting! handles!into! a! concept! of!seamless! electric!drive! and!sophisticated!computer!controlled!functions!is!not!an!easy! transition.!!!In! June! our! club!members! Janet!and!Rob!Temperly!became! the!owners! of! a! 2012!!Prius! C! ! for! City!1500!cc!four!door!!sedan,! with!sunrise! bright! ! orange! duco! and! a!dark! grey! interior! with! lighter! grey!reliefs! and! are! now! heavily!engrossed! in! familiarising!themselves! with! the! intricacies! of!petrol/!electric!car!use.!This!is!the!first!electric!Hybrid!in!the!club! and! is! therefore! of! great!interest! to! many! of! us! who! have!little!or!no!understanding!of!what!it!is! all! about.! Now! Prius! cars! have!been!around!since!1991!and!several!thousands! have! been! made.!!However!here!in!Ulladulla!they!are!a!rarity,! but! as! the! rugby! song! says!“they! may! be! rare! in! Berkeley!Square! but! not! on! the! Rio! Grande”!and! the! main! market! has! been! in!America! and! Asia! and! Europe! (well!that!just!about!covers!the!rest!of!the!world!that!matters).!Briefly,!the!Prius!works!like!this:!a!45!kw! electric! motor! is! driven! by! an!ohc! four! cylinder! 1500cc! petrol!engine.! ! The! electric! motor! in! turn!acts! either! as! a! driver! or! as! a!generator!to!a!nickel!metal!hydride!battery!bank!of!20!modules!each!7.2!vimodule!with!an!overall!voltage!of!144!at!6.5!ah.!!Through!an!inverter!the!maximum!voltage!surges!to!600.!!With!the!batteries!fully!charged!the!power! is! then! passed! through! the!electric! motor! to! a! seamless! CVT!(Constant! Variable! Transmission)! to!the! front! wheel! drive.! ! This! type! of!transmission! is! not! new! and! was!used! in! the! last! century! by! several!manufacturers! and! is! based! on! the!sliding! cone! design! which! gave! an!operating! range! according! to! the!length! and! pitch! of! the! cone.!!!Probably! the! most!successful!application! of! this!method! was! by!the! Dutch! DAF!company! famous!for! their! trucks,!who! put! it! into!their! cars! of! the!1960s,! which!among! other!virtues! had! the!distinction! of!being!able!to!go!as!fast! in! reverse! as!forwards,! thanks!to!a!curious!elastic!band! belt! drive!from!the!engine!to!the! gearbox.! ! This! feature! caused!much! ill! considered! mirth! among!motoring! journalists! at! that! time.!!However! we! digress…! Back! at! the!Prius:! ! When! the! batteries! are! low!or!when!extra!power!is!needed!the!petrol! engine! cuts! in! automatically!and!supplements!the!electric!motor!and!charges!the!batteries.!!But!that!is! not! all! as! the! man! in! the! adverts!says.! ! Cleverly! Toyota! have! used!technology! from! the! Bucyrus! Eyrie!electric! face! shovels! used! in! the!mining! industry! since! the! 1950’s! to!8!

!Torque'Talk' ' August'–'October'2013'harness! regenerative! power! from!the! kinetic! energy!during!bucket!lowering!in!the!digging!cycle.!!When!the! car! is! braking! or! running!downhill! without! drawing! electric!power! the! transmission! runs! the!electric! motor! in! effect! as! a!generator! and! back! feeds! some!current! into! the! batteries.! ! One!main! problem! used! to! be! that!regeneration! was! sporadic! and! the!spikes! in! current! were! hard! to!control.! ! Toyota! have! developed! a!much! more! satisfactory! design! to!regulate! regeneration! and! Rod!McKinnon,! service! manager! at!Ulladulla! Toyota,! was! extremely!helpful! in! explaining! and! discussing!the! features! and! technical! aspects!of!the!Prius.!After!a!short!start!up!procedure,!Rob!drove! the! Prius! absolutely! silently!out! of! the! garage! –!not!a!sound!–!uncanny.! ! On! the! road! the! ride! is!excellent!and!does!not!pitch!and!jar!like!a!small!car,!but!doubtless!Nick!is!not! too! familiar! with! modern! small!car!suspension!developments.!!Then!at! higher! speeds! or! when! power! is!needed! like! moving! briskly! from!traffic! lights! the! petrol! engine! joins!in!the!fun!with!no!sudden!impact!or!harshness.! ! There! is! the! usual!modern! dashboard! with! a!bewildering! array! of! information! on!it,! but! it! has! a! clear! digital! speedo!and! a! device! indicating! fuel!consumption.!!The!Prius!is!frugal!and!does!about!65!mpg!normally!in!old!money,! or! up! to! over! 80! mpg! on!long! gentle! runs! which! resonates!with! our! readers! as! a! fantastically!low! consumption.! ! The! computer!decides!whether!the!car!drives!with!either! petrol! or! electric! or! with! a!combination!of!both.!!You!have!no!choice.! ! Just! press! the! pedal! after!engaging!D!and!all!is!taken!care!of.!!So!much!cleverness!in!such!a!small!car! is! clearly! a! snapshot! of! what! is!to! come! in! the! future.! ! Hobart.!!Geoff! is! one! of!the! main!organisers! of! the!Shannon’s!sponsored!supporting! tour!during! the! Targa!Tasmania!annual!rally,!which!will!be!held! again! in! 2014! from! 9! to! 21!March.! They! travelled! in! their! 1931!series! 355A! Town! Sedan! and! won!the! prize! for! the! competitors!travelling!the!most!distance!and!also!for! the! best! dressed! pair! in! the!costume!of!the!period.!MUVCCC! caught! up! with! Michelle!and! Geoff! and! the! Cadillac! during!their! stay! with! club! members!Yvonne!and!Jim!Casey.!!The!Cadillac!is! one! of! many! cars! under! Geoff’s!care.! ! He! has! owned! it! since!November!2012,!having!obtained!it!from!a!dealer!in!Melbourne.!!At!the!time! of! purchase! the! Cadillac! was! a!nonAstarter,! which! gave! Geoff! a!strong! bargaining!position.! ! Upon!completion! of! the!deal,! a! few! simple!adjustments! to! the!twin! points! in! the!distributor! made!the! Caddy! run!almost! perfectly!and! it! was! driven!back! to! Hobart.!!The!first!owner!was!a! mining! company!in! Arizona,!America!who! bought! it! for!the! use! of! their!general!manager!as!an! inducement! for!him! to! work! for!them.!!Later,!after!several!owners,!it!was!restored!in!Arizona!in!1986!and!won! the! Governor’s! Cup! Concours.!!Sometime!in!2010!it!was!shipped!to!Melbourne! and! subsequently!obtained!by!Geoff.!9!

GM! and! the! enterprise!would! have! collapsed! had! it! not!been! for! the! strong! sales! of! the!Cadillac!brand.!!A!close!parallel!is!the!adventurism! of! Donald! Stokes! in!England,! grabbing! anything! that!moved! in! the! car! industry! –!Jaguar,!Rover,! AEC,! Leyland,! Scammell,!BMC,!Triumph!and!Daimler!until!the!whole!lot!collapsed!in!a!tearful!heap.!The!Cadillac!355A!has!a!353!cid!side!valve! L! head! 90!degree!V8! engine,!96! hp! at! 3000! rpm! with! a! threeAspeed! all! synchromesh! gearbox!driving! a! conventional! differential.!!Geoff’s!car!has!the!high!compression!5.26:1! engine.! Cadillac! did! not! use!chassis! numbers,! but! relied! on!engine!numbers!to!account!for!their!production.! ! Of! the! 10,717! cars!made! in! 1931! starting! at! engine!number! 800001,! this! 355A! is!number!803335.!!This!is!a!very!high!output! given! the! depression! period!in! America! then.! ! The! Fisher!coachwork! body! is! a! four! door!traditional! design,! beautifully!finished! in! a! deep! maroon! with!contrasting! black! wings.! One!interesting! feature! is! the! wing!mirrors!mounted!by!straps!onto!the!twin!spare!tyres!on!each!side!of!the!car.!!On!the!gentleman’s!side!of!the!rear! seat! is! a! cigar! lighter!compartment! and! for! the! lady! a!silver! cigarette! case.! ! The! Cadillac!weighs! 2,122! kgs! and! sits! on! huge!wire!wheel!shod!700!x!18!whitewall!!tyres.! ! In! its! day! the! wire! wheels!were! an! optional! extra! to! replace!the! standard! wooden! spoked!artillery!items.!!Spare!wing!mounted!wheels!were!also!an!optional!extra.!!It! seems! that! this! Ulladulla!Vintage!and!Classic!Car!Club’s!newly!elected! secretary! David! Freeman’s!VG! Valiant.! ! ! David! and! his! wife!Meurys! have! brought! the! Valiant!back! to! first! class! condition! after!several! months! of! restoration.! The!car! has! a! six! cylinder! 245! cid! Hemi!engine!developing!185! bhp! at! 4600!rpm! and! 240!ft/lbs! torque! at!2000!rpm.!!Linked!to! a! threeAspeed!column! operated!transmission,! the!Valiant! offers!effortless! smooth!travel.! ! Unusual!these!days!are!the!14Ainch!wheels!on!a! larger! car,! but!the! Valiant! sits!very!well!on!its!5A½! J! rims! with!195/75!R!14!tyres.!!Front! suspension!is! controlled! by! longitudinal! torsion!bars! and! double! acting! shock!absorbers.!!The!rear!suspension!is!by!semi! elliptic! leaf! springs! and! a!diagonal! control! arm! linking! with!single!action!shock!absorbers.!Over! many! years! whilst! living! at!Rylstone,! Ambulance! service! in! 1972!when! it! was! only! two! years! old.!!After!a!long!time!David!managed!to!buy!the!Valiant!from!the!farmer!and!it!was!in!remarkably!good!condition!then! with! no! rust! or! real! panel!damage! and! the! mechanicals! still!working!reasonably.!In! August! this! year! the! car! was!resprayed! in! white! by! Todd!Chapman! of! Ulladulla! Smash!Repairs!to!a!very!high!standard!with!a!deep!solid!finish!to!it.!Due!to!the!work!of!the!poultry!farmer!the!rear!tailgate! opening! lock! and! winder!had! ceased! to! function! after!constant! use.! ! David! managed! to!find! a! local! machinist! who!fabricated!a!cone!split!feral!to!take!up!the!wear!and!completely!fix!the!problem.! ! The! vinyl! upholstery! on!the! seats! was! replaced! along! with!the! seat! springs! by! Brian! Azzopardi!at! Kings! Point.! ! Meanwhile,! David!overhauled! the! brakes! with! a!reconditioned! master! cylinder,! new!front!disc!pads!and!rear!linings.!!The!engine! has! been! well! serviced! and!the! compartment! is! stunningly!clean.!!A!new!heavy!duty!12!volt!battery!has! been! installed!and! the! whole!presentation! looks!reliable! and!workmanlike.! ! New!windscreen!rubbers!and! other! seals!have! completed!the!restoration.!Married! for! over!forty! years! Meurys!and! David! have!three! children! and!six! grandchildren.!!They!have!lived!just!outside! Milton! for!the! last! twenty!years.! Most! of! David’s! career! was!spent!at!Qantas!working!as!a!ground!engineer! mainly! on! engine! repair!and! maintenance.! ! After! leaving!Qantas! he! had! spell! at! the! Civil!Aviation! Authority! dealing! with!safety!issues!until!moving!to!Milton!where! he! managed! a! Skillforce!programme!for!a!few!years.!!The!VG!Valiant!will!be!a!worthwhile!addition!to! the! many! varieties! of! cars! in! our!club.!11!

After! sampling! the! beautiful! array! of! cakes! and!slices! everyone! retired! to! their! motels! to! arrange! their!own! dinner.! ! Rugby! Don! Manwaring’s! shed!which!is!called!the!Toy!Shed!where!they!are!restoring!a!magnificent! 1909! Talbot.! ! We! were! welcomed! by!President! Don! Manwaring! and! Events! Organiser! Kay!North.! ! Once! again! there! was! a! magnificent! array! of!cakes! and! slices! for! morning! tea! supplied! by! the! hard!working!ladies.!They!told!us!that!if!you!break!the!cakes!in! half! the! calories! will! fly! away.! ! Tom! Turner! was!absolutely!delighted!with!this!bit!of!news!and!went!back!for! seconds,! thirds! and! fourths.! ! Obviously! Wattle! time.! ! Paul!McCann!and!his!mate!John!(affectionately!referred!to!as!3!Jaguars.!!He!also!had!locked!away!in!a!shed!a!special!D!Type!1955!Jaguar!of!which!there!are!only!2!in!Australia.!!He! had! the! Jaguar! enclosed! in! a! special! canopy! and!stated! that! he! would! unzip! it! so! we! could! get! a! closer!look.!This!comment!amused!some!of!the!ladies!but!we!believe! he! was! referring! to! the! canopy! and! not!something! else.! ! Upon! arriving! at! the! property! Jenny!“The!Boys”)!looked!resplendent!in!their!green!and!gold!wigs! and! they! were! even! brave! enough! beforehand! to!walk! into! the! bar! to! meet! the! locals.!!!A!prize!of!2!wooden!goblets!went!to!Jenny!Coulston!as!the!winner!of!the! most! memorable! event! during! the! day! recounting!about!her!finger!being!slammed!in!the!car!door.!!After!a!wonderful!2Acourse!meal!we!played!a!game!called!“put!the!pencil!in!the!bottle”.!!There!were!teams!contesting!from!each!club!but!it!was!the!Milton!Ulladulla!team!of!Jenny! &! Keith! Coulston,! Jan! Guest! and! Rob! Temperly!who!were!the!winners.!!Unfortunately!we!didn’t!win!the!next!game!of!naming!the!list!of!British!cars!but!we!came!second.! ! Some! tables! were! disqualified! because! they!were!using!smart!phones.!Coulston! slammed! her! finger! in! their! Porsche! car! door!and!then!tried!to!pull!it!out!with!the!door!shut.!!!Poor!Jenny,!her!finger!was!bruised!and!sore!all!weekend!and!she!had!to!keep!it!stuck!up!in!the!air!which!didn’t!look!very! ladylike.! ! We! then! headed! off! to! Temora! to! the!Rural! Museum! for! a! lunch! of! sandwiches! and! more!cakes.!!On!display!was!Don!Bradman’s!first!home!where!he! lived! with! his! parents! on! their! farm! near! Yeo! Yeo!Siding!for!two!and!a!half!years!before!moving!to!Bowral.!!There!was!also!a!wonderful!display!of!old!ambulances!as!well! as! vintage! machinery! and! an! FJ! Holden! Ute! just!crying!out!to!be!restored.!Saturday! night! saw! us! all! head! off! to! the! ExAServicemen’s! Club! where! everyone! was! asked! to! wear!Sunday'22 nd 'September'Once! again! we! met! at!
