蕭 紅Xiao Hong (1911-1942)原 名 張 乃 瑩 , 出 生 於 黑 龍 江 省 呼 蘭 縣一 個 地 主 家 庭 , 自 幼 喪 母 , 童 年 時 代經 常 流 徙 於 異 鄉 , 生 活 孤 苦 悲 涼 。1927 年 , 蕭 紅 接 觸 五 四 以 來 的 進 步思 想 和 中 外 文 學 , 尤 受 魯 迅 、 茅 盾 和美 國 作 家 辛 克 萊 作 品 的 影 響 。1932年 在 哈 爾 濱 邂 逅 報 社 編 輯 蕭 軍 , 二 人相 戀 並 於 翌 年 一 起 出 版 小 說 合 集 《 跋涉 》。1935 年 蕭 紅 出 版 第 一 本 長 篇小 說 《 生 死 場 》, 生 動 地 描 寫 了 幾 個農 婦 血 淋 淋 的 悲 慘 命 運 , 該 著 作 由 魯迅 撰 推 薦 序 , 令 蕭 紅 從 此 蜚 聲 文 壇 。193 8 年 與 蕭 軍 在 西 安 分 手 , 其 後 與端 木 蕻 良 於 武 漢 結 婚 。19 4 0 年 , 蕭紅 與 丈 夫 從 重 慶 抵 港 , 寫 下 最 成 功 的回 憶 長 篇 小 說 《 呼 蘭 河 傳 》, 以 及 《 馬伯 樂 》 和 回 憶 故 鄉 的 中 短 篇 《 小 城 三月 》。Xiao Hong was a Chinese writer. Her real namewas Zhang Naiying. She was born in Heilongjiangprovince and spent an unhappy and lonelychildhood under a domineering father. In 1927,she encountered the progressive ideas of theMay Fourth Movement as well as Chinese andforeign literature. She was particularly impressedby the work of Lu Xun, Mao Dun and UptonSinclair. She met newspaper editor Xiao Jun inHarbin in 1932. They fell in love and publisheda joint collection of short stories, Bashe (ArduousJourney). In 1935, Xiao Hong published herfirst full-length novel, The Field of Life and Death,of which the foreword was written by Lu Xun.Xiao Hong has been renowned in the literaryfield since then. In 1938, she broke up with XiaoJun in Xian and married Duanwu Hongliangin Wuhan. In 1940, Xiao and her husband,Duanwu Hongliang settled in Hong Kong, whereshe wrote her most successful novel, Tales of theHulan River, based on her childhood memories,along with a number of short stories based onher childhood, like Spring in a Small Town.12

Xiao Hong,fiery and genuine, travels with Xiao Jun fromHarbin to Qingdao, then onto Shanghai…they depend on each other. Hong believes shehas attained her goal in life — love.Because of her novella, The Field of Life andDeath, Xiao Hong came to the attention of LuXun. Lu’s brilliance and rationale inspires XiaoHong and stirs her soul. As if guided by thelight of a beacon, Xiao Hong moves forward.Xiao Jun and Hong fall out of love, no longerin empathy emotionally or in their careers.Xiao Jun leaves for the battlefields in Yan’an.Lu Xun is fatally ill. Clairvoyant about his owndeath, he pens the essay Epitaph.Alone, Xiao Hong travels to Japan. She findsout that Lu Xun is dead. Standing alone onthe street, she senses for the first time herindependence as well as an overwhelmingloneliness.17

Tracing her memory, she walks along amountainous path harbouring hopes for a newlife. She falls, unable to bring herself to stand.The place from which she escaped has becomeher only solace. The novel Hulan River cameinto being. Fantasies and the force of lifeeventually flow away with the river. That ismy position.Some critics depict her later works astouching upon the deepest secrets ofthe human psyche. To me, these are notcommon desires, but notions far larger andbroader.Many of her writings are shrouded by asense of self-surrender, yet I detect thereina fervent desire for life: she strove to breakthrough in her own maverick and carefreemanner. Humans are complex by nature: itall depends on our perspectives and choices.I’m wary of delineating a straightforwardbiography, because that does not qualifyas artistic creation. And this work is not21

For XiaoHong, they comprise the temperaments, fearsand responsibilities, as well as stubbornnessand aspirations that her hometown andupbringing bequeathed her. Others might detectan inner spirit within this structure. When strungtogether, an answer to life emerges.All of us must complete prescribed taskswithin respective timespans. Doubt, resistance,acceptance, possession, rejection, and loss,facing life anew, riding the ups and downsthat mark existence...Some view them asstruggles while others revel in grappling withthem.I must extend my heartfelt thanks to theHong Kong Arts Festival, composer ChanHing-yan and director Helen Lai. In thefinal year of her life, she completed her mostrenowned novel, the semi-autobiographicalTales of Hulan River.Playwright Yan Yu feels a natural affinity toXiao Hong. They are both from HelongjiangProvince, and they both left their native landand came to Hong Kong. Xiao’saspirations in life were love and family.Chang saw romantic relationship aspsychological antagonism between desire anddefense. Even though solitude and lonelinessexist in both writers’ world, Chang’s creativeuniverse is a cold shade of navy whereasXiao’s is a fiery red. "I feel being fiery is anexpression of pure solitude."Yu believes that Xiao was searching forwarmth and love all her life. And becauseXiao wholeheartedly believed in its purity, aswell as absolute interdependence and trust,she was constantly disappointed and defeatedin real life. Her tumultuous relationshipsand life seemed to be an expression of herpursuit for untainted feelings, and with it,came the tragedy of reality. Yu hopes thatHeart of Coral is an illumination of Xiao’sunderstanding of her own life. For example, the homeof Xiao Hong in northeastern China isinvoked through elements of folk musicfrom the area and its neighbouring Russia.Twelve musicians form the ensemble, playingWestern instruments from the wood, brass,strings and percussions sections, plus Chinesesheng, pipa and erhu. There is also a groupof six singers.Heart of Coral is dance artist Helen Lai’s debutas opera director. Lai feels that even thoughXiao experienced many setbacks in life,her courage always drove her forward. Sheagrees with Yu that Xiao’s life is a fiery red,"Yan’s script really moved me. It captured thefeeling." As for realising the story on stage,she is opting for minimalism – it will not begrand and opulent, and yet it is not going tobe too "realist" either. He began his musical studies at an earlyage under Chiang Wai-man and Rosaline Pi, andstudied under Dr Derek Anthony and MichaelRippon. He later studied with Joy Mammen andAudrey Hyland at the RAM. He performed hisfirst major role at 19 as Rinuccio in Puccini’sGianni Schcchi. He went on to perform other leadroles such as Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte, Mozartin Korsakov’s Mozart und Salieri, Pong in Turandot,Testo in Monteverdi’s Il Combatimentto di Tancredi eClorinda, Goro in Madama Butterfly, Monostatos inThe Magic Flute, Remendado in Carmen, Gaston inLa Traviata, Spoletta in Tosca, Malcom in Macbeth,and Parpingol in La Boheme, among others.
