The village is locatedin the gorgeous Columbia Valley, nestled between the PurcellMountains, the Rockies and the gateway to beautiful KootenayNational Park. The village is bordered by the Columbia RiverWetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America.Radium Hot Springs is home to 1,000 year-round residents, and many more residents from out of town make this theirsecond home as often as they can.Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a lifestyle second tonone. With the village council’s commitment to making thevillage a “walking town,” individuals can enjoy walking themany trails and paths located throughout Radium. With golfing, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, birdwatching, fishing, snowmobiling and many otheractivities available in and around the Radium Hot Springs,it is easy to see why this four-season village is a favouriteplace to visit and especially to call home! The Radium Hot Springs story is as old as the Rockies. Thestory began with the unleashing of powerful forces that leftits tale in heaving, tortured rocks. The earth’s crust crackedalong a fault, more than two kilometres deep. The shatter zonearound the fault lets groundwater seep close to the earth’s core— heating, pressurizing and returning it to the surface.Prior to any development by settlers of European descent, the local First Nations peoples found the hot and odourlessmineral water issuing from the rocks at the base of RedstreakMountain to be soothing and healing for their aches and pains. The first legally-registered owner other than the Crown(government) was Roland Stuart, an Englishman whopurchased the springs in 1890 for $160 and owned themuntil 1922. A group of Englishmen headed by LordNorthcote began construction of the first pool prior to1914. Their efforts were halted by the outbreak of WorldWar I. The Canadian government took over and the hotpool and the first log bathhouse were completed in 1923. BIGHORN SHEEPBighorn sheepBighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) are a famous attraction for Radium Hot Springs.During late October and early November, they can be seen around the villagepartaking in their famous head-banging ritual and rutting activities. The horns from a male bighorn sheep can grow to be up to 127 centimetreslong (50 inches). Adult rams grow to be about 100 cm (40 inches) tall and weighbetween 90 and 135 kilograms (200 to 300 pounds). A ewe, a female bighornsheep, also grows horns, but these are much smaller than the ram’s horns. Thesheep do migrate throughout the year. During the spring and summer, the sheepmove higher into the mountains to lamb. During the fall and winter, the sheep areseen around town and along the highway towards Invermere.Photo by Dani Tschudin/Visual Exposures PhotographyPhoto by Kara Cassidy/Tourism RadiumVILLAGE HISTORYA history of Radium Hot Springs (cont.’d) After Kootenay National Park was formed in 1920, theCanadian Pacific Railway built the original Radium HotSprings Lodge. One of Radium’s pioneer families — John andJessie Blakley — built a second hotel that was followed by athird, The Gateway Hotel, which was owned by Mr. Oliver. An imposing park gateway was constructed close to the pooland entrance fees for vehicles were collected. On the arch overthis gate was the quote, “THE MOUNTAINS SHALL BRINGPEACE TO THE PEOPLE.”This development followed the construction of the originalBanff-Windermere Highway throughthe park. Visitors came by train toBanff and were transported to RadiumHot Springs by bus or limousine overthe narrow, dusty roads.Miss Charlotte Armstrong, whosefather, Captain Frank Armstrong, hadthe first riverboats on the ColumbiaRiver from Golden to Windermere, was the first manager of the RadiumHot Springs Lodge. She was fondlyremembered years later for herhospitality and quick wit. In 1937, she purchased the lodgefrom the Canadian Pacific Railway and later sold it to Mr.and Mrs. H.B. Williams. Miss Armstrong retained ownershipof one of the cabins for her summer visits into the 1950s.They sold the property to Duncan and Dorothy McIntoshand family in 1952, who, in 1965, subsequently turned arather rustic mountain retreat into a modern hotel complexoverlooking the pools. Douglas and Bruce enlarged the lodgein the ‘70s and headquartered some of the first skiing andgolf package marketing along with heli-skiing in the valley. The Radium Hot Springs and Lodge in 1970.A famous visitor in 1929 was Sir Winston Churchill, whospent a week in a bungalow at the Radium Hot SpringsLodge. He was accompanied by his son Randolph, hisbrother and a nephew. They are reported to have enjoyedconsiderable time in the hot pools. The 60th birthday of the opening of the Banff-Windermerebrought back vivid memories to some who travelled it inthe early years. The Model T Fords of the time usually tookone whole day to drive from Banff to Radium Hot Springs.Construction of the road was finished on September 30th,1922 with the official opening onJune 30th, 1923. In 1948, the oldbathhouse was destroyed by fire to bereplaced by the lovely new aquacourt, plus a new hot pool as well as athree-quarters Olympic-size pool.As expected, this resulted in a greatincrease in traffic as, at the time, thepresent Village of Radium Hot Springswas rapidly developing and growing.Kootenay National Park replacedthe original campground above thepools with a spacious new one on the hill overlooking thevillage. Also, the park offices were located on the hill. In1956, Duncan McIntosh and Steve Capowski built a driveintheatre, offering entertainment for both tourists andlocal people. The Radium Hot Springs Resort Golf Course, together with other housing subdivisions, resulted in morepeople settling in Radium Hot Springs on a permanent basis.Today, regardless of all the other developments, the warmodourless mineral pool remains the star attraction atRadium Hot Springs on a year-long basis.8 • Radium Hot Springs Visitor Guide 2013/2014
