PaphosThere are more than 30mosques in the Paphosdistrict. Most of them arerelatively recent buildingswith limited value. Thesignificant ones used to beold Byzantine churches.In the town of Paphos, theAyia Sophia is of theclassical Byzantine stylewith a dome. The mosquein Timi is also of theByzantine type, singleaisledwith two domes,while those in Chrysochou,Polis tis Chrysochous andPelathousa are singleaisledand have no dome.Recent restoration workon the mosque of Polis tisChrysochous has revealedmagnificent frescoes.172. 178, 179. The mosque in thetown of Paphos used to be anold Byzantine church known asAyia Sophia. This is a classicalByzantine cruciform buildingwith a central dome. A tallminaret was added in thenorthwest corner. The buildingis undergoing extensiverestoration work.84

184, 185, 186. The mosque inthe village of Timi used to be anold Byzantine church knownalso as Ayia Sophia. It is singleaisled with two domes. It isunder the protection of theAntiquities Department as areall the mosques that were to beold Byzantine churches and themost significant mosques inthe cities. The walls werecovered with frescoes, whichwere lacerated and destroyedfollowing its conversioninto a mosque. Restorationworks revealed only isolatedfragments, a testimony to themonument's past.86

215, 216. An old church, themosque in the village ofPelathousa has an added aisleon the north side. The ceiling ofthis part has suffered theeffects of erosion and needsrestoration. Two decorativepaintings of Muslim origin arevisible in this old church.94

219, 220. The mosque inthe township of Polis tisChrysochous used to be an oldByzantine church, as testifiedby its architecture and itsmagnificent frescoes. It wasdedicated to Ayios Andronicos.Restoration work completed inthe early 1990s revealed richwall-paintings dating to theXVIth century. Some partsare very well preserved;unfortunately in the lower partsof the walls no paintings havebeen saved.96

221, 222, 223. The mosque inPolis tis Chrysochous used to bean old Byzantine church.97

224, 225. The mosque in thesmall village of Chrysochou,used to be an old Byzantinechurch dedicated to AyiosNicolaos. Restoration workand the removal of plasterrevealed only traces of paint(reminiscent of frescoes?) andsome decorative paintings ofthe Ottoman period. Theminaret collapsed following anearthquake in 1996 and wasrebuilt in 2000. Adheringto prevailing internationalstandards, the restorationrespected both the Christianand Muslim features of themonument.98
