CHAIRMAN’S LETTERWelcome to our second Milford Tennis and Squash Club Magazine. The Clubhas had another very successful year, with membership held at around 620.The magazine gives details of all the different activities at the Club, with contactdetails if further information is required on any specific activity. With the interiorof the Club completed so successfully, in the last year we have concentratedon improving the grounds with the extended Club patio, new patio furniture andnew pathway to Courts 4 to 7 making a huge difference to the appearance ofthe Club. A lovely new patio area was also built next to the coaching court, sothat parents can watch their children in comfort. The area behind the Club wascleared, paved and the concrete shed modified to make a shop/store room forour Coach. We also installed acoustic panels on the Foster Taylor room ceilingwhich was much appreciated by the bridge and mah-jong players. As the Club has been here since 1927, it is surprising that lots of people inMilford don’t know we exist. Another step was taken to overcome this when, for the first time in the history of the Club, we took part in the Milford Carnival.Despite the appalling weather it was a great success. We didn’t win a prize, but a picture of the float and a mention appeared in the local paper. We plan toparticipate again this year and hope for better weather.Having finally received planning permission for lighting on tennis courts 4 and 7,the most exciting project in the coming year will be the installation of the lightingon those courts, the work being carried out at the same time as the re-carpetingof the 2 courts, in September 2013.Court 7 is the junior coaching court and the new lighting will significantly extendthe time available for coaching the juniors. We have over 100 junior memberswho, of course, represent the future of our Club. We have extensive mini andjunior coaching programmes and many activities including regular junior/seniortournaments where juniors have a chance to play with adults in a fun competition. If you are new to Milford, or haven’t seen the Club, why not have a look at ourlovely facilities in Lucerne Road and have a chat with some members, alwaysthe best ambassadors for a thriving Club like ours.As always, my thanks go to the members of the Club who have produced thismagazine, and to the Club’s Committee members who give so generously oftheir time and talents to make the Club such a success. I would also like tothank the sponsors and advertisers whose funding has helped to make themagazine possible.John RichardsChairman6

HISTORY OF MILFORD TENNISThe Milford Country Club was formed in 1927 and became a member of theL.T.A. in 1935, purchasing the freehold of its 1.8 acre site in Lucerne road in1945. Although tennis has always been the major sporting activity at the club, inthe early years croquet and hockey were also played. In 1936 the first squashcourt was built on the site and in 1950 the Squash Club, previously a separateclub, merged with the Country Club. The club originally had three grass courtsand four hard courts and, during these early years, the members largely playedsocial tennis with a limited number of matches being arranged with other localclubs. More recently, bridge, mah-jong and table tennis have also becomeimportant activities enjoyed by club members. In the late 1990’s, the Club changed its focus to include competitive tennis, thus providing opportunities for members of all abilities to participate in internaltournaments as well as in matches with neighbouring clubs. In 2001 the Clubchanged its name to the Milford Tennis and Squash Club and subsequentlyobtained the services of a full time professional coach. All the courts have beenresurfaced in recent years and the Club now possesses seven high qualityartificial grass courts which are much admired by visiting players. Floodlightswere installed on three of the courts in 2005 and two further courts will be floodlit later in 2013.In 2007/8, the Club carried out major improvements to the Clubhouse whichincluded providing new changing rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities as wellas refurbishing the whole of the premises. The full cost of this was £140,000,all of which was met from Club funds. Unfortunately, on Boxing Day 2009, adevastating fire destroyed approximately 50% of the Club premises sparingonly the new kitchen and squash courts. In a little over a year, the Clubhousewas totally rebuilt using the money from the insurance claim, with an additional£29,000 from Club funds being used to improve and upgrade the facilities. Thenew Clubhouse was formally opened in February 2010 by Mark Cox, the formerDavis Cup tennis player, and today the Club is fortunate to have a large functionroom, and lounge bar capable of hosting events for up to 60 people.10 www.milfordtennisandsquash.net

AND SQUASH CLUBThe management of the club is in the hands of the Executive Committee, whichconsists of a President, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and representativesof each of the Club’s main sections. The Club is run entirely on a voluntary basisand depends on the participation of a large number of the over 600 members.Social events are organized throughout the year and both internal and opentennis tournaments held regularly.Milford has always been a popular venue for junior tennis players and has, since 1938 hosted one of Hampshire’s largest Junior Tennis Tournaments, afact of which it is very proud. We are looking forward to our 75th DiamondAnniversary tournament this year.

FitnessTo get your best results on the court, it is best to train with court specific exercisesseparate from your on court physical, technical, tactical, and mental work. This can be as easy as split training where you will do intervals of running, jogging and walking. For speed, skipping and shuttling in between court linesare best. For strength it is best to use your own body weight ( trx training ) forresistance so as not to bulk: for example press-ups, pull-ups, squat or lunges..Tennis is an explosive game so plyometric training will help to develop speedand power on the court. Try exercises such as squat jumps, bunny hops, bounding, side throws and press ups. It is important to do all the above whilstkeeping your body under control in order to develop good core strength andbalance. You should aim to do strength and endurance training during autumn andwinter months and speed and explosive exercises in spring and summer whenyou have more matches.Hint: If you feel anxious before match, try breathing slowly and deeply. If you feel lethargic skip on the spot to raise heart rate.NutritionTo be able to get the best out of matches and training, your off court work isvery important. The vital times to eat are (1) at breakfast, since this is whenyou will burn most calories, and will lose muscle if not refuelled, (2) at least anhour before a match and (3) within an hour after a match..Before a match or training, carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potato, cereal, beans, bananas) are best to give you energy and improve your endurance. After amatch or training, it is important to include enough protein in the diet in orderfor your muscles recover, beans, eggs, meat (poultry, beef, pork, etc.) fish, cheese, milk, yogurt.Don’t forget to drink plenty of water the day before training or a match. On theday and during a match, constantly sip water and the next day continue torehydrate as your body is still recovering.24Have food and drink in your bag on court just in case.Love LifePlay Sport.....www.milfordtennisandsquash.net
