The Year ofFaithDuring the Year of Faiththe Holy Father urges usto rediscover and reliveour faith. Rediscovering our faith must be a goalfor all of us who believe in God. Rediscoveringour faith cannot be completed or achieved allat once, it is a daily and on-going task for everyChristian. Faith is a gift of God, a treasure. It islike a precious pearl, a hidden treasure that onehas to look for, that will allow a person to give upeverything in order to possess it.Isuppose this makes onequestion whether faith hasbeen lost, if we now needto rediscover it? Our faithhas not been lost, but it has beenovershadowed by the manymaterial thingsthat the humanheart yearnsfor. Many ofus, instead ofgiving Godcentre-stage inour lives, getmanipulatedby materialacquisitions and slowly, but indisputably, begin to forget aboutGod and live a life marked with acertain deafness towards God.With the proclamation of theYear of Faith, we as Catholicsare encouraged to break out ofour routine and to consider whatelse we might do to grow in andrefresh our understanding of ourfaith. And, since we are livingin a very materialistic worldwith all its trappings, we are alsoinvited to reflect on the ways inwhich our faith impacts on ourdaily living, the decisions that wemake and the choices we have.As the Year of Faith wasannounced an official logo wasunveiled. The significance ofthe logo is very simple, for theofficial logo of the Year of Faithshows the image of a ship whichsymbolises the Church. Themast of the vessel is a cross withfull-blown sails which form themonogram of Christ (IHS) and inthe background is the sunrepresenting the Eucharist. The official Vatican logo ofthe Year of Faith is for the use ofeveryone, but various diocesesaround the world, in celebrationof this year, have creativelyproduced their individual logos. In the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, our logo embraces thecross, because the cross is a signof love, it is the sign of our faith.Together with the cross there isthe sign of the tongues of fire. The flickering flame calls to mindour baptism, reminding us of thepromises made on the day of ourbaptism, and the responsibility tokeep the flame burning brightlyso that theflickering flameof faith will bekept alive inour hearts at alltimes.Surroundingthe cross andthe tongues offire is the sunrepresenting theEucharist. The Eucharist for us isat the core of our lives, it is at thecentre of the life of faith.Father Paul Beukes OMIDate Talk/Topic SpeakerTues 16 Apr Introduction / Registration LeadersTues 16 AprGod’s LoveTues 30 Apr Salvation Fr Anthony Egan SJTues 07 May New Life Fr Barney McAleerTues 14 May Receiving God’s Gift Fr Jeremias Martins MCCJTues 18 May One on One Session Leaders & ParticipantsTues 21 May Baptism in the Holy Spirit Fr Joseph Wilson MSCTues 28 May Growth & Transformation Fr Shaun Von Lillienfeldin ChristTues 04 Jun Thanksgiving Mass Fr Tony Daniels OMIDate:Venue:Time:For a deeper, personal relationship with God.Please join us for:“... the Lord declares – I shall pour out My Spirit on all humanity ...” Acts 2 : 17Tuesday 16 April 2013 toTuesday 04 June 2013Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church15 Mullins Rd, Malvern East19h00 till 21h00Entrance is free, love offering will be taken forPriestsFor further details please contact:Maria 082 954 1672 • DaSilvaM@ishltd.co.zaAfricae Munus –a magna carta for AfricaThe Holy Father BenedictXVI in the Post-SynodalApostolic Exhortation –Africae Munus – expresses hislove and his spiritual closenessto the Catholic Church in Africa.Africae Munus offers the opportunityfor all members of thechurch in Africa to take their fullplace in church and society tobring about justice, peace andreconciliation.Dawn Linder and CharmaineKhawula from the JohannesburgJustice & Peace office attendedan Africae Munus workshop forwomen, organised by the InterRegional Meeting of BishopsYoung adults of St Albert’sin Vosloorus hosted a HealingMass at on Saturday19 January.Invited parishes that attendedinclude St Salvador-Leondale;Holy Family Spruitview; St PaulPalm Ridge; St Nicholas Diepkloofand St Paul from Tsakane.Parish priest Fr Thabo Motshegwadelivered the sermon. In his homily, he said that in ourjourney in life we always seekGod for good things. “If we praywith faith and trust, God will de-of Southern Africa (IMBISA) inMaputo, Mozambique.Around 30 Catholic womenfrom Angola, Botswana,Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia,South Africa and Swaziland metover three days from Monday14 January to Wednesday16 January to study and reflecton Africae Munus. Abortion and theConstitutionDear Editor,The ‘Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act’ could not havebeen passed by our Parliament if it had contravened the provisionsof our Constitution, which is paramount. In this regard, attention is drawn to the following:Our country’s Constitution, despite its otherwise excellentqualities, is one of those most favourable to abortion in theworld. During 1996, the Constitutional Court requested thosewho were opposed to the new Constitution to lodge their objectionswith the Court before it certified that the said- Constitutioncould become law.The Pro-Life Organisation, under the leadership of its president,Dr Claude Newbury, accordingly briefed expert Counsel,Advocate Johan van der Vyver, and lodged with the court anobjection to the new Constitution on the grounds that portionsthereof would clearly permit the future legalisation of abortionon demand. Pro-Life was, in fact, the only organisation in thecountry to lodge an objection of this nature. The Pro-Life objection was, however, rejected by theConstitutional Court. The new Constitution was then declaredby law, and, as predicted by Pro-Life, the subsequent passagethrough Parliament of the ‘Choice on Termination of PregnancyAct’, which legalised abortion on demand, was a mere formality.Had the objection succeeded, the said Act could not at any stagehave been promulgated. The right to life is, in theory, conferred by the Constitution onall persons by Section 11 thereof, which states that ‘everyone hasthe right to life’. However, as this right is so crucial, there shouldbe no doubts whatsoever about its legal limits, either in termsof the Constitution itself which is paramount, or in terms of anyother legislation. Thus if our legislation is to accurately reflectthe present situation regarding the fundamental right to life, theaforesaid Section 11 of the Constitution should be amended bythe addition at the end thereof, of the words ‘after birth’ **. Thealternative, which is definitely preferable, is that the right to lifeshould be protected constitutionally and unconditionally fromits first beginning, also by amending the said Section 11 of theconstitution, by the addition of the words ‘from conception’, atthe end thereof. It is submitted that the last mentioned very simple amendmentwould transform the present dubious status of our constitution, tothat of a pre-eminent guarantor of the fundamental human rightsunequalled anywhere else in the world. This is thus something, which, without doubt, is eminently worth working towards andpraying for, to the best of our ability.Damian McLeish** Ed. : The Constitutional Court ruled in 1998 that the“right to life” referred to in Section 11 of the Bill of Rights onlyapplied “after birth”.WAYS INTO PRAYERWhat is Spiritual Direction? And why would I want it?One of the great gifts of being Catholic is that our church is this vaststore house of knowledge and thinking and practice. But like manygreat store houses sometimes I am afraid that most Catholics onlyever make it into the very front of the building.think lots of us think thingsI like, ‘What I learned when Iwas preparing for HolyCommunion and was eight yearsold is really good enough for me’. Or maybe, ‘what I learned whenI was preparing for Confirmationis all I really need.’I often think faith is the onlyplace where we don’t want togrow up and take responsibilityfor being an adult. Is whatI learned as a child reallyenough? We don’t think thatabout finance, or medicine. Wewould not want our teachers toonly teach what they learned aschildren. But we are prepared toleave the riches of our faithtradition to a few specialists. As Christians we say that webelieve that the ultimate meaningand purpose of our lives is toKnow God, to Love God and toServe God. This is a profoundlyradical statement. I know it assomething I aspire to live, andfail to live most days. If Godreally is at the centre of my life, what does that mean for how Ilive my life? For me, spiritual direction isan essential part of the Christianexperience. It is the relationship Igo to, to discern what God wantsfor me and of me. It is where Iallow myself to dream big, andto search my own deepest desiresFrances Correia of the JesuitInstitute-South Africa, explores IgnatianSpirituality.for God’s desires for me. It iswhere I am challenged, whereI find the courage to look at myown areas of weakness. It iswhere I am seen as a uniqueperson and am helped to learnhow to collaborate with God.Ever since my late teens,I have had someone who waswalking with me on my ownChristian journey, helping meto become more the person Godwants me to be. I have had differentspiritual directors in the20 years since I started usingthis ministry. Some were priests, some religious and some laypeople. At different moments inmy life, these different directorshave helped me to discern God’son-going invitation. This ministry has sopowerfully shaped my own lifethat I realised in my mid 20s thatBraaing forpregnantwomen womanFr James Ralston OMIand Paul Spolander at thenew braai.this is what I wanted to do thiswith my life. I worked with theJesuits and trained as a SpiritualDirector (and discovered alongthe way that God is really thedirector, and that I had to learnhow to get out of the way, andin the words of St Ignatius, ‘letthe Creator deal directly with theCreature’.)Why am I writing this now?In the midst of Lent I am alwaysmoved by the call of thepsalmist to ‘Come back to Godwith all my heart’. For me thiscall always involves thinkingdeeply about my relationshipwith God. And thinking aboutmy relationship with God alwaysleads me to phoning my directorfor an appointment and thengoing and reassessing my lifewith them. I have been doing thismy whole adult life, and I amalways amazed at how God’s callin my life remains eversurprisingand new. I invite youtoo, to think of seeking out thisministry and exploring in moredepth, God’s unique call to you.If you would like to try outthe experience of SpiritualDirection you can contact TheJesuit Institute and we will helpyou find a director. 011 4824616or f.correia@jesuitinstitute.org.zaSign Language MassFr Mark James celebratedMass for the deafcommunity of St Martinde Porres, Orlando East. WORD OF GOD“Master, I wantto meet you inyour Word.”In this Year of Faith, it isimportant to remember:“That all authentic and livingChristian Spirituality isbased on the Word of God,accepted, celebrated and meditatedupon in the Church.” (121)In Chapter 10 of Mark’sgospel, the disciples are scoldedby Jesus for chasing the childrenaway. The rich young man, offereda challenge, walks away. When Jesus speaks of his comingpassion, his followers fail tounderstand. James and John askfor the top jobs in the kingdom;the other 10 apostles are angrybecause James and John gotin ahead of them. Why are wepresented with such a variety ofexamples of blindness? Perhaps, like Jesus’ disciples, we too arenot seeing and thinking the wayJesus does.Christ himself is present in hisWord, since it is He who speakswhen scripture is read in Church.(52) This is also true when weopen the Bible and use the Wordof God as our source of prayer.Could it be that Jesus is challengingus, in this Year of Faith,to grow in our relationship withChrist through the Word of God?“And as he was leaving Jerichowith his disciples and a sizeablecrowd, Bartimaeus, a blindWe Celebratewith our ClergyPray for the following priestsand deacons who celebratethe anniversaries of theirordination and birth.OrdinationsMiguel De Lemos 20-3-55Gregory Brooke andAlbert Nolan 18-3-61Gerard O’Reilly 13-3-65Dominic Hession 5-3-66Gerard McCabe 24-3-84InigoAlvarez de Toledo 28-3-00March Birthdays1 st Didier Lemaire3 rd Joseph Nnadi andNkosinathi Nkabinde5 th Rev Bert Haupt8 th Rev Terry Fox12 th Jordan Ngondo14 th Benno Singer21st Chris Townsend and23rdStanley MasilompanaJames Towell andAnthony Amadi24 th Remigius Scheuber28 th Michael Van Heerden29 th Rev Keith Mc Kenzie31 st Carlos GabrielAnd in early April1 st Rev John Rahme andThulani Manana2 nd Wigbert Lange andKino MakhataBr Mike Chalmers cfc of theBible Foundation writes aboutthe Word of God in responseto the Synod call for spiritualgrowth and on-going formation.man, the son of Timaeus, sat atthe side of the way, begging. On hearing that it was Jesusof Nazareth, he began to call outand say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” And manyrebuked him, telling him to besilent. But he kept calling out allthe more, “Son of David havepity on me.”Jesus stopped and said, “Callhim.” So they called the blindman, saying to him, “Take courage;get up, he is calling you.”He threw aside his cloak, sprangup, and came to Jesus. Jesus saidto him in reply, “What do youwant me to do for you?” Theblind man replied to him,“Master, I want to see.” Jesustold him, “Go your way; yourfaith has saved you.”Immediately he received hissight and followed him on theway.” (Mk 10: 46-52)“And many rebuked him, tellinghim to be silent.” Now that isa strange way to spread the GoodNews. The crowd and Jesus disciplesonce again misunderstoodJesus’ message. Bartimaeus didnot. We are told that he followedJesus on the way. He adoptedJesus way of thinking and acting.Notice how many times theword ‘call’ is used in this story. We see a similar pattern in thecalls of Peter, Andrew, Jamesand John. In those stories Jesuscalls and the disciples respond. In this story, Bartimaeus is thefirst to call out to Jesus, and Jesusresponds. Encouraged by Jesus, the people respond by callingBartimaeus. They proclaim theGood News to this blind man. They move from trying to blockBartimaeus, to carrying outJesus’ mission. The transformationis remarkable. This is mostencouraging for us. We too canhear God’s call to change. Now let us turn to Bartimaeus.“He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.”There is much symbolism to befound here.Bartimeaus is not comfortablewith his situation, he is tired oflife under a blanket, he wants somuch more. Determined to makeso much more of his life, hethrows off the cloak, and movestowards Jesus. He stumblesforward, not at all sure where heis going. He is, however, certainthat all will be well, as he followsJesus’ invitation. Filled withconfidence, he answers Jesus’question with a prayer, “Master,I want to see.”This is a prayer that eachone of us can echo. Let us pray,“Master, I want to meet you inyour Word.”(Numbers in brackets are paragraphreferences in Verbum Domini.)Clergyo n-goingFormationSt Augustine College, theCatholic University inVictory Park, offers amonthly morning seminaron topics of use and interestto Clergy.
