As we go to press, Jeanette is floatingin the Great Salt Lake while visitingher kids. She asked your Editor to puta plug in for Friday’s great camaraderieget-togethers, so here goes:Oh, the joy of boating – it seems thatMurphy’s Law was made for boaters. You maintain your boat, keep the enginewell tuned and still somethinghappens at the worst time. I recentlybought a new engine for my boat believingthat I would be trouble-free –wrong. It seems the manufacturer ofthe engine placed the starter too lowon the engine, close to the water in thebilge and when your boat is on theplane all the water collects by the driveshaft and sprays your engine. An entirelyrusted starter just doesn’t work.Like you are mooching for Salmon offof Rocky Point and you want to restartyour engine and nothing happens. What a wonderful feeling knowing youhave vessel assist insurance. Youpick up your phone, give them a call inan hour or two they pick you up andtow you to your berth or a shipyard ofyour choice. I’ve used them manytimes over the years I’ve owned boatsfor problems like hitting driftwood to anover-heating engine. Why they nevercanceled me out I’ll never know.Maybe they realize that they reallyweren’t my fault. Enough said.By the way if any of you need anyelectrical work done – starters, alternators, etc. the place to take them is Star-Gen Co. located in West Oakland atWillow and 14 th Street. They do excellentwork at a reasonable price.Salmon fishing has been a hit andmiss affair this year. Kenny Hill andhis wife Peggy took the good shipBounty up to the Fort bragg area forsome decent Salmon fishing but whenthey came down to the coast of MarinCounty the fishing turned poor. The fishing for Rock Cod and LingCod is excellent at the present time.Limits are being reported. Boats areworking the Double Point area andDuxbury. The party boat Huck Finnout of Emeryville is a good boat to fishon. Always brings fish home. Thecost is about $100 per person. Just afew years ago it was $45. Just as longas the cost of fuel is high, everythingelse will remain high. Rememberwhen gas was 75¢ a gallon?Gene CovelloBalloon JIB October, 2011 Page 7
