Lone Star Scouts NewsletterOctober, 2011It was a hot, dusty drive to Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville. An interesting place, FortClark was established in 1852 at Las Moras Spring to protect the Overland Trail fromSan Antonio to El Paso. Five Metal-Of-Honor recipients, as well as several famousofficers, served at the fort. After many active years and a colorful history, it was closedin 1944. In 1971, the abandoned fort was purchased and developed into a privaterecreation and retirement community. The Burns, Hagars, Hodges, Buckners, Wolfes, and Brattens (in spite of a flat tireenroute) arrived on Wednesday to a warm welcome by Shirley, the friendly manager. Most just set up, relaxed, and ate dinner in their rigs. The Burns went out to dinner inDel Rio with Janice’s high school friend and her husband. The friends gave Charlie andJanice the “low down” on what to see and where to eat in the area.Janice’s friend said the Crazy Chicken served outstanding breakfast tacos, so Thursdaymorning the Buckners had to try it out. They reported the recommendation wasaccurate and the tacos were yummy. Thursday was a quiet day of chatting and playingcards as folks watched the Gabriels, Carlisles, Collins, Shadrocks, Kregers, Rodens, and Sellars arrive and settle in. A few checked out the little town. For dinner, mostgrilled out and ate together – some in the clubhouse and some outdoors at picnictables.Friday morning, four couples flocked to the Crazy Chicken for breakfast. Back at theRV Park, the last of the group arrived – the San Miguels. It was a lazy day since there’snot much to do in Brackettville. The women played cards and the men enjoyed the

great outdoor weather gathered under a huge oak tree. That evening, most of theladies went to play bingo, a Friday night activity at the fort. Edie and Marie wonmonetary prizes! The Buckners, Wolfes, Mike Hagar, and the two Charlie’s went tocheck out Kickapoo Caverns State Park, open to the public only since last summer. One of the features is a large bat cave, but most of the critters had already begun theirmigration back to Mexico.Saturday, most went to Burger & Shake for lunch – everyone reported excellent burgersand shakes. Folks played cards, solved problems under the shade tree, and prepareddelicious dishes for the traditional pot luck dinner that night. The diners weresurrounded by pumpkins and witches in the spirit of Halloween.Marie gave birthday cards to Arline and Denny San Miguel. Not present were SteveWebb, Tom Bowen and John Hickman. Anniversary card to Finis and Edie.Saturday night, all were delighted to hear RAINDROPS accompanied by LOUD thunderand a spectacular lightning show (maybe not so welcome).Sunday morning breakfast sent everyone off fortified. Hosts, the Buckners, Wolfes, andCollins served scrambled eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy, Edie’s famous gritscasserole, orange juice, and four kinds of Janell’s homemade jam.Michelle Stanfield is doing well from her surgery and they hope to come in the next 2months.Tom Bowen is still having some health issues and tests. The next campout will be November 3-6 at the Fredericksburg KOA. There will be ascheduled meeting which will include a discussion of by-law revisions.Note from Edie: FREE -- Heavy Plastic Spare Tire Cover and Plastic Fiberglass butanegas cover for 2 tanks.
