The Silent ServiceVickers Ltd: a unique 1915builder’s design model of HisMajesty’s ‘K’ Class Submarine,with ebonized hardwood hullwith keel, conning tower andtorpedo tube outlines, fore andaft decking, finely detailed withrudder and propeller, theconning tower marked ‘K-X’ (‘X’denoting ‘experimental’).The model rests upon a displayplinth of Honduras mahogany,bearing engraved ivorine plaque,reading: ‘H. M. Submarine ‘K-X’High Speed Fleet Submarine ‘K’Class Prototype ModelConstructed For BritishAdmiralty By Messrs. Vickers.Barrow - In - Furness September1915’. English, 1915. Ref 5674A brave but unfulfilled concept,the ‘K’ Class submarine wasfirst promoted shortly after thestart of the Great War, in late19<strong>14</strong>. Regarded as ‘state of theart’ at the time, the primitivetechnology available failed tomatch the Royal Navy’srequirements and the ‘K’ Classsuffered several disasters in its9-year lifespan. ‘A Night to Remember’Radiguet: a superb and exceptionallyrare live-steam toy gunboat, circa 1890 infine original condition, the boat with gildedGriffin figurehead, and brass anchor,mounted on a wooden stand. Lengthoverall: 20 inches (50 cms). Ref 5058Radiguet, long-standing and respectedmanufacturer of optical instruments andscientific equipment, was established in1830 by Marie-Honore Radiguet. The firmstarted producing luxury toys “all abouteducation and instruction”, from 1872,ceasing only around 30 years later.Toy boats have proved familiar playthingssince the days of the Greek Empire,and examples by the Parisian maker areproperly given their due as “among themost beautiful and desirable of all toys”.(Source: The Collectors’ Encyclopedia,pub. Salamander, 1988).A rare and wonderful find, especially inthis condition, and a second chance toexperience the delights of childhood.A massive ship’s bell of castbrass, with a rope handledclapper, engraved R.M.S.Titanic, 1912 in black recessedlettering, the crown of the bellsecured with a ‘D’ clip to acustom-made support of arope-covered frame andwooden base, with a brassplaque engraved ‘R.M.STITANIC 1912, THIS BELLWAS USED IN THE FILM‘A NIGHT TO REMEMBER’PINEWOOD STUDIOS 1958,DIRECTED BY ROY BAKER’made as a screen prop for the1958 Rank Organisation film,about the story of R.M.STitanic.
