FROM THE DIRECTORSpring has arrived in Rochester and with summer fast approaching, there is a lot tosee and do at the Rochester Art Center (RAC). Working with local Rochester schoolchildren, Minneapolis-based artist Katie Hargrave offers multiple ways to contemplatethe visual iconography behind the Minnesota state flag in her exhibition How to FoldL’Étoile Du Nord as part of our 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series. We proudly concludeour second season of RAC 2 Exhibition Series for local artists with a thoughtful andplayful sculptural installation by Rochester-based artist Nicole Havekost. Our summer will be animated, as our thematic group exhibition The Protagonist:Animation and Narrative considers narrative storytelling in animated short films andvideo through the work of six internationally recognized artists. The protagonist is alsoexplored in painting, drawing, sculpture, puppetry, photography, and film. I encourageyou to spend plenty of time viewing the many current issues presented through livelymoving images. We are delighted to present our 2013 Wells Fargo Atrium Series with a beautiful airy installation by Uppsala,Sweden-based artist Henny Linn Kjellberg entitled Critical Mass. Henny was in residence over a week in Rochesterand will present a delicate contemplative porcelain piece that wonderfully spans our atrium. In addition to our exhibitions, we have an impressive array of programs for all ages. Our inaugural DistinguishedLecturer Series and inaugural Past President’s Lecture were both huge successes. Our 42-year young programTotal Arts Day Camp continues to thrive and enrollment is up. Rochester’s only afterschool teen program TasteLike Paint is inspiring. And, for your enjoyment, FLUX returns newly invigorated on June 7; and on July 12, wewill once again host the much anticipated Palette to Palate co-chaired this year by the dynamic team of HeatherNessler and Brian Smidt. All of us at Rochester Art Center are committed to supporting the creative pursuits of artists and working togetherin our community to provide greater access to those artists and the work they make. EXHIBITIONSHenny Linn Kjellberg: Critical MassWells Fargo Atrium SeriesSummer, 2013 – Spring, 2014Known for her cutting-edge ceramic work, Swedish artist Henny Linn Kjellberg has created an original, site-specificinstallation called Critical Mass that considers dual interpretations of this frequently used term. As described byKjellberg:Critical mass is most often used within nuclear science to describe the smallest amount of fissile materialfor a sustained nuclear chain reaction. It is also used as a socio-dynamic term to describe the existenceof sufficient momentum in a social system, such that the momentum becomes self-sustaining andcreates further growth. Critical Mass reflects on the idea of the growth of human knowledge and theforce of the group dynamic such as political movements and uprisings, and how actions and eventssometimes can grow fast, or out of control, with either positive or negative outcomes.Critical Mass is made of approximately 1,500 thin, paper-like white porcelain sheets that hang and seem to floatfrom our atrium’s 50-foot ceiling in a dense cluster. On each sheet is black, underglazed text from the 1651political-philosophical book Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes.Although trained a ceramic artist, Henny Linn Kjellberg has often collaborated with artists in the performancefield. In order to cross boundaries between the art forms and widen the concept of stage design, she has createdceramic objects that have been used as costume and installation art as well as set design. In this context, andin collaboration with American composer Ellen Lindquist and Danish percussionist Birgit Løkke, she has beenresearching ceramics and sound through the development of a set of porcelain percussion instruments. She hasalso created the set designs for the project Dream Seminar, a new piece for music-theatre based on the work ofcontemporary Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer. The Wells Fargo Atrium Series is made possible through funding by Wells Fargo.Support for this exhibition is provided by The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, The WindgateCharitable Foundation, The Swedish Council of America, and Judy & Robert Douglas in Honor of Ed &Virginia McKevitt.Henny Linn Kjellberg, Critical Mass, 2013, porcelain, dimensions variable (detail).Olson | Becky Paape & Chris Wendland | Alexandra G. FALL EXHIBITION PREVIEWDAVID RATHMANSeptember 13, 2013 – January 19, 2014Opening on September 13, 2013, the RochesterArt Center will present the first survey exhibition ofMinneapolis-based artist David Rathman. Includingworks produced from 1991-2013, this exhibitionwill provide a comprehensive overview of the artists’output spanning a twenty-two year period. Throughhis masterful use of ink, oil paint, and watercolor,Rathman confronts iconic emblems and motifsregularly associated with notions of masculinity—theAmerican West, rock and roll, boxing, football, andthe automobile. Frequently incorporating text andimage, his works present themselves as fracturednarratives—a singular, crucial moment of action in anotherwise protracted story that has been graduallyunfolding out of view. His protagonists seem to becaught in a moment of reflection or introspection,David Rathman, Above Ground, 2002, ink on paper, 22 x 25 inches.showing, at times, signs of fragility—answering forthings they have done or responding to the things done to them, standing proudly firm or humbly making amends. With intertwining themes of melancholy, failure, mortality, and nostalgia, Rathman’s work examines and confrontsthe nuanced conditions and associated histories of learned gender roles.David Rathman lives and works in Minneapolis. He received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art andDesign in 1982. Rathman was the recipient of a Bush Foundation fellowship in 1992, McKnight FoundationFellowships in 1993 and 2000, and a Minnesota Book Award in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions at LarissaGoldston Gallery, New York, NY; Weinstein Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; Mary Goldman Gallery, Los Angeles, CA;Clementine Gallery, New York, NY; and Franklin Art Works, Minneapolis, MN. He has participated in group showsat Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Cohan and Leslie, New York,NY; and Clementine Gallery, New York, NY. Rathman’s work in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the J.Paul Getty Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Stanford University, and the Walker Art Center. An extensive catalog will be produced in association with the exhibition.
