25th Canadian Chess ChallengeOttawa May 18-20photo report by John UpperThe Chess ‘N Math Association held its25th annual Canadian Chess Challengeon May 18-20, at Carleton Universityin Ottawa. The event pits teams of grades 1to 12 students from each province againsteach other in a nine-match round robin.Ontario won with a perfect 9/9, followed byQuebec and B.C.Remarkably for a tournament with a constantlychanging set of participants, the organizersmanaged to have four things returnfrom the first CCC in 1989:• it was held in Ottawa;• it was organized by Larry Bevand;• the TD was IA Jonathan Berry; and• the 2013 coach of Team Quebec, FM LefongHua, was the first ever winner of thegrade 1 section of the CCC.Crosstables, and a PDF version of of thetournament booklet can be found at theCnM CCC website.Games were played at rapid timecontrol (G25 + 5s Bronstein), so scorekeepingwas not required. And since most of theplayers are quite young, and there wasn’tmuch time between rounds to consult withcoaches, games from the event are hard tocome by.Instead, these photos will give you someidea of what the event looked like, if not feltlike. The man behind the goldOrganizer and driving force behind theCanadian Chess Challenge, Larry Bevand.
