CARES Campaign to Help the Needy<br />
HFM’s unique brand of “mission based<br />
health care” is special. HFM is a non-profit<br />
health care network that digs deeper than<br />
any organization in the region to help the<br />
disadvantaged. There’s no denying it. The<br />
need for the Community Care Program,<br />
which ensures financially needy patients<br />
receive the medically necessary care they<br />
require, has more than tripled since 2003. The<br />
CARES 2009 campaign is helping patients<br />
like Christine through the Community Care<br />
program. Here’s her story.<br />
As a hairdresser for 35 years, Christine<br />
Stewart never made much money, always<br />
enough to “get by.” Breathing in toxic hair care<br />
products every day and other harmful life<br />
choices took its tool on her body.<br />
Over the years with the cost of health<br />
insurance increasing, her premiums<br />
exceeded her mortgage payment. Like many,<br />
she made the tough decision to stay in her<br />
home. This decision eventually worked<br />
against her.<br />
One day in March this year when she woke up,<br />
breathing was strangely difficult. By evening,<br />
she was gasping for air. As she struggled, she<br />
choked out the words, “Let’s go . . . to the<br />
Emergency Room . . . right . . . now!” She<br />
was rushed to the ER by her daughter and<br />
ushered into an exam room where doctors<br />
asked a battery of questions to figure out<br />
what was wrong. In the Critical Care Unit<br />
late that evening, Christine was told she had<br />
emphysema, a disease that severely reduces<br />
lung function. Dying was certainly a fear,<br />
but the thought of the cost of her care was<br />
overwhelming.<br />
Months later, now, Christine is<br />
alive and well. Her condition<br />
is irreversible, but it’s under<br />
control. Admittedly, she owes<br />
her life to the doctors and<br />
nurses who served her.<br />
Last year, $2.1 million in<br />
Community Care was provided<br />
and 992 people like Christine<br />
were helped. The CARES 2009<br />
goal is to raise $50,000 to help<br />
people just like Christine.<br />

From the Desk of Erik Barber...<br />
Thank you! I want to say that first. In spite of the difficult<br />
times in which you and I find ourselves, some great<br />
friends of HFM have been more generous than ever. Let<br />
me explain:<br />
• Through August, the average gift size has increased<br />
42% this year versus the same period in 2008<br />
• Through August, the average Year to Date giving per<br />
giving unit is up 22% compared to the same period<br />
in 2008<br />
• Several of our special events have exceeded their<br />
budgeted results this year: Samaritan Day by 1%,<br />
HFM’s Italiano by 30%, and the Garden Party<br />
Fundraiser by 39%<br />
Through September, $425,000 has been raised – all to help<br />
people in Manitowoc County. This puts us on target to raise<br />
the $775,000 budgeted this year. Some of the departments<br />
benefiting from your philanthropic giving are:<br />
• Sexual Assault Resource Center – $80,000<br />
A hospital can be an intimidating place. That’s why<br />
the Heritage Garden was created. It’s a healing, nonintimidating<br />
place, for patients, their families, and visitors<br />
to relax, unwind and find inner peace. Whether viewing<br />
the Garden from a distance or getting down in the dirt to<br />
pull a few weeds, it provides a break from the concerns that<br />
bring people to HFM.<br />
On August 27 th , <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong>’s Garden Party<br />
celebrated the Heritage Garden’s third anniversary. Over<br />
seventy-five participants helped to raise nearly $1,500.<br />
Funds raised will go to maintain the Garden, replace<br />
plants and flowers, etc., ensuring the Garden continues<br />
to be a meaningful, beautiful and healing experience.<br />
The Garden Party kicked off at 6:00 p.m. in the Haven<br />
of Hope garden area with wine by Courthouse Pub,<br />
cheese donated by Saxon Creamery, and hors d’oeuvres<br />
by HFM’s Cafeteria. The event featured raffles and sales<br />
of Heritage Garden photography and note cards donated<br />
by local photographers Heidi Dalberg, Heather E.N.<br />
• Samaritan Endowment Fund – $80,000<br />
• Cancer Care Center - $35,000<br />
• Tobacco Control - $30,000<br />
• Providence Fund – $10,000<br />
• Heritage Garden – $8,000<br />
• Hospice – $5,000<br />
• Community Care Fund - $4,500<br />
• Tamarack Behavioral Health – $4,000<br />

Party Helps Grow the Garden<br />
Doucette, Cyndy Larson, Robert Kellner, Kristin Gresl and<br />
Michael Wellner. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed<br />
fine wine, great food, and conversation as they wandered<br />
through the Labyrinth retreat and St. Francis Passage to<br />
the <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Garden Area patio where the photography<br />
gallery was located and raffle took place. Many guests left<br />
the event with new photography to adorn their homes and<br />
offices. Additionally, some purchased and one of a kind<br />
packs of note cards created from photography featured in<br />
the raffle.<br />
Special thanks to donors, buyer, attendees and Garden Party<br />
Chair, Cyndy Larson, and her committee, Ana Sadowski<br />
and Judy Lango, for putting on the event.<br />

Heritage Garden Calendar.<br />
2010 Heritage Garden calendars are now<br />
available! For just $10, you can purchase a<br />
calendar with pictures taken of various Garden<br />
flowers and elements. Kristin Gresl of HFM’s<br />
Marketing Department snapped fantastic photos<br />
of the Garden which were compiled into the first<br />
Heritage Garden calendar. To order, check the<br />

Racing for Hope<br />
Cancer patients at <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> can<br />
thank the community for playing a part in their<br />
treatments. This summer, two memorial run/<br />
walks were held to benefit patients.<br />
Carol Rose Wester <strong>Memorial</strong> Run<br />
The 2 nd annual Carol Rose Wester <strong>Memorial</strong><br />
Run/Walk featured more than 250 runners<br />
on August 15 at Red Arrow Park. The event<br />
raised more than $6,500.<br />
Carol Wester, previously an active HFM<br />
volunteer and close friend of many, lost her<br />
battle with cancer in 2007. In her memory,<br />
her husband Cal and grand daughters, Liz and<br />
Stephany Becker, planned the event. Carol’s<br />
love for running made this race a fitting tribute<br />
and a great way to help others. By organizing<br />
the Run/Walk, Liz and Stephany continue<br />
their grandmother’s legacy of inspiring hope<br />
and smiles. Proceeds from the race benefit<br />
patients at HFM’s Cancer Care Center to<br />
help ease financial burdens and allow time for<br />
enjoyment with family and friends.<br />

NEW Love Light Tree Takes Root at<br />
New Home: Harbor Town!<br />
The 2009 Love Light Tree Celebration is moving to HFM’s<br />
Harbor Town campus! After 22 years, the Reed Avenue<br />
tree has reached retirement, and a beautiful new pine has<br />
been planted at Harbor Town to anchor the Celebration<br />
for years to come. <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> invites you to<br />
build on the tradition of celebrating and honoring<br />
loved ones and veterans at the annual Celebration<br />
on December 7 at 6:00 p.m.<br />
The move paves the way for new possibilities<br />
and opportunities beyond what was possible at<br />
the Reed Avenue campus. While the historical<br />
Love Light Tree is impressive, it had become<br />
difficult to decorate and maintain. Harbor<br />
Town provides a number of other features<br />
that compliment perfectly the Celebration<br />
such as:<br />

and the Tree, greater exposure for<br />

Proceeds from the 2009 Love Light Tree Celebration will<br />
be used for Sexual Assault Nurses Examination training<br />
(SANE) for Emergency Room nurses. As well, a portion of the<br />
funds will be directed to the RSVP Volunteer Center, which<br />
strengthens the community and empowers people through<br />
volunteer service. As always, 10 percent of event proceeds<br />
are designated to the Providence Fund, which provides a onetime<br />
helping hand to needy patients requiring medical-related<br />
transportation and prescription medications.<br />

Rubick <strong>Memorial</strong> Run<br />
On August 8th at 10am, a race was held to honor the<br />
memory of Coach Ron Rubick, Lincoln High School’s<br />
football coach from 1968-1998. A little less than a year<br />
ago, Coach Rubick lost his battle with cancer. Following<br />
his death, former student and Green Bay Packer, Don<br />
Davey, felt it appropriate to honor Ron by doing some<br />
good – just what Coach Rubick would have wanted. The<br />
race committee selected the Cancer Care Center as one<br />
of the recipients of the funds raised. Funds will be used<br />
for staff education, equipment and other Cancer Care<br />
Center operating needs to enhance the patient experience.<br />
<strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> received $3,500 from the race that<br />
featured more than 400 participants who ran, walked, and<br />
strolled for 3.1 miles before enjoying the camaraderie of<br />
the post-race party at Rubick Field. Following the race,<br />
Don Davey said, “I have never been so proud to claim<br />
Manitowoc as my hometown as I have been this year .”<br />
Together, the Carol Rose Wester Run/Walk and the<br />
Rubick <strong>Memorial</strong> Race raised more than $10,000 to help<br />
