Walking into the shoot at the EastwoodRichmonde Hotel early in the morning, RissaMananquil-Trillo is radiant even without makeupon. It’s hard to believe that she is a mother oftwo – with another baby on the way!As she settles down for a quick breakfast and prep time, we askher what styling tips she can give women on the go to help themlook and feel beautiful.“For a woman like me that plays many roles, I go for skin careproducts that multi-task. The precious minutes you save spellextra time with the family. I really like washing my face withPond’s facial washes. They do such a great job that they eliminatethe need for a toner and makeup remover,” enthused Rissa.Another one of her favorites is the MAC Mineralized ChargedWater Moisture Gel, which she described as an excellentmoisturizer that also preps your skin before makeup. She’s alsoreally gaga right now over the Pond’s Age Miracle BB Cream SPF30 PA++.“It’s my sunblock, anti-aging cream and makeup rolled intoone!” she exclaimed. She described her fashion style as a fusion of clean, timeless andthe unexpected.“If anything, I always keep in mindthat I won’t regret what I’m wearing.I don’t want it to look ‘dated.’ When Ilook at my photos 10 years from now, Iwant to say WOW and not WHOOPS.But that doesn’t mean I have to beboring and safe,” she said. While she used to be a very trendyand impulsive shopper, she said thatshe has grown in confidence over theyears on what clothes to wear and nowhas fun injecting trends through greataccessories, flea market finds, and oneof-a-kindaccessories from her travels.Rissa’s Top 3Style Staples: abeautifullybold necklace, dresses and a greatpair of heels!answered. “Also aspire for peace of mind and genuine happiness. The happier you are in life, the more beautiful you are going tobe on the outside.”And Rissa certainly has a lot to be happy about – her weeklyfashion and beauty advice column in The Philippine Star called“Style S.O.S.” remains a must-read for the city’s fashionistas, she’s a sought after modeling instructor, an endorser for a topbeauty brand, and even recently launched her own make-up linecalled Happy Skin.“It has always been my dream to have my own makeup line - thekind which allows me to be hands-on with creating, formulating, testing everything from the start. What fueled this dream of minewas how hard it was to find good makeup for morenas when Ifirst started modeling ten years ago. Even as a beauty columnist,I’ve always been proud to be brown and dreamed to create theperfect makeup line that would wonderfully celebrate Filipinaskin,” she explained. To find out more about Happy Skin, visit www.happyskincosmetics.comA Model MomAside from her busy career, what keeps Rissa fulfilled is her family,as she describes herself as a very hands-on mom to her kids Enzoand Celestia, who just turned one recently. She is also currently 3 months pregnant andis expecting another little angel on the way!“I’m very involved with both my children.I’m a strict disciplinarian. But I’m generouswith support, encouragement, affectionand praise. I embrace the role of mompassionately as it empowers me to be ableto mould a person’s mind. I love teachingas well as learning something new everydaywith my children. If there’s one thing mykids have taught me, I’m always remindedthat it’s the simple things that count,” Rissasaid.“It doesn’t matter if it costs P50 or P5000. As long as I intenselylove it, I wear it the way I want to and make it my own,” addedRissa. Her top three style staples include a beautifully bold necklace, which she said could be the star of a relatively simple outfit (withother pieces playing a supporting role); dresses, which flow overa woman’s flaws, hug the right places and are reliable pieces thatnever fail to make a woman feel remarkable, and finally, a greatpair of heels, which instantly transform outfits from simple tostunning and makes a woman’s legs look better. But her ultimate secret to looking young and beautiful is simple.“The better you take care of your skin, the better you look,” sheRissa shared that her favorite bonding moments were sharingstories over dinnertime with Enzo and reading books to Celestia. She also enjoys trying different restaurants and cooking togetherat home, spending many hours in the bookstores during theweekends (as they all love to read) and also traveling together. Her husband Paolo Trillo is also always there for Rissa andhis children. He met Rissa when she was still President ofProfessional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP) andthey were looking for a venue for their Christmas Party.“I was a Managing Partner of a resto bar at that time and so wemet during their ocular visit. I remember being attracted to herright away!” he said.2627

He recalled being drawn by her pretty face and adorable smile(with that dimple of course!), but what really attracted Paolowas Rissa’s demeanor – which he described as “poised andappealing, yet very unassuming at the same time.”Though he recently took on a new position as Team Managerof Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters in the PBA, he still makessure to have time for his family, whether it’s just hanging out, occasionally cooking a meal or barbecue at home or going outfor a meal or movie.Rissa also reminds women that it’s okay to take some me-timetoo, to relax and de-stress.“Love yourself! It’s important that you take care of yourself. You owe it not just to your family and your husband but toyourself too. When you feel great, it resonates to others and youcan do the most amazing things,” she said. She makes it a point to make time to do things with somebodythat has nothing to do with work like meeting up with friendsfor dinner or seeing a new movie with her family. A trip to thespa or the salon is a great way to unwind too, Rissa advised. She also enjoys going to Eastwood Mall, where she has hadcountless memorable dinners with her solid barkada of 20years, where they’ve announced wedding engagements, metnew boyfriends, and celebrated traditional Christmas dinners.“When I instantly need a fashionable outfit, Eastwood Mall, temple to the trendy, always saves the day for me. When themust-see movies are finally out, the cinemas of Eastwood Mallare simply the best!,” she said.Paolo also particularly likes Eastwood Mall. “Everything youneed is there and they have a great selection of restaurants.Holiday TraditionsFilipinos love to celebrate Christmas and Rissa and her family iscertainly no exception!“Not a lot of people know this but I love wrapping. June andDecember are my favorite times of the year because I get towrap and label books, school supplies, and Christmas presents,”shared Rissa. She also said that growing up, Noche Buena always felt specialas her dad would cook his Filipino dishes while her mom wouldmake her salad and pasta. “It was such a treat to have themcook! It’s nothing grand or extravagant but I’d never trade iteven for a king’s feast,” she said.Another wonderful Christmas memory Rissa said, wasChristmas morning when she was five years old and saw a hugepackage wrapped with her name on it.2829

“My brother and sister received their dream toys. When Iexcitedly opened mine, it was a wooden study table with apanel that opened to reveal a chalk board. Inside, too, was abox of colored chalk. I was five years old then. Looking back,I think that’s what fueled me to be a consistent honor studentand do well in school,” recalled Rissa.A holiday tradition they also celebrate now is their annualfamily vacation. “Every year, the Mananquil family - togetherwith everyone’s better halves - goes on a vacation abroadduring the holidays. These annual trips are our favoritebonding moments,” she said. For this travel-loving family, more trips together are definitelyon their bucket list, with Paolo hoping to visit more of thecountry’s beautiful beaches. TV host, radio jock and upand coming food guru SamOh gets a taste of some ofTuscany at McKinley Hill’sbest kept secrets. Fromalmost single-handedlyswigging down B&TMexican Kitchen’s notoriousslug to getting to knowCanada’s national dish atMain Street and learningsome wine connoisseur’svocabulary at Planet Grapes, find out other excitingculinary discoveries andthings that Sam Oh loved atMegaworld Lifestyle Mall’snewest dining destination.TUSCANY AT MCKINLEY HILLB&T MexicanKitchenSam’s first stop was at B&T Mexican Kitchen, a casual family style‘Tex-Mex’ restaurant that serves mouthwatering, do-it-yourself burritosand tacos as well as other signature Mexican dishes.Upon soaking in the B&T’s casual and laid-back vibe, Sam had ataste of its Ballpark Nachos, Naked Burrito, Shredded Beef Burritoand Wet Lamb Burrito – all of which had her raving with every bite. The fresh ingredients and flavors of the burritos appealed to Samas much as the generous servings. She particularly singled out theNaked Burrito and Wet Lamb Burrito, which she described as havinga different and interesting take on a familiar Mexicanfavorite. Even while still having a go on the burritos, B&T alreadyhad another surprise waiting – the Chipotle Chicken Pizza, a roastedthick tortilla with chipotle adobo sauce, cheese, pico de gallo, fajitas, chipotle chicken and mozarilla cheese. A self-confessedpizza-lover, Sam was so fascinated with the flavorful taste of hernew favorite, calling it a no-fail combo.Sam’s hearty meal was capped off by the equally yummydesserts, the freshly and in-house made Tres Leches and the ratherodd-sounding Spicy Yema, the rich, sweet, and spicy taste of whichhad her wanting more. Just when it seemed that entire banquetwas done, Sam got a literally big surprise, B&T’s signature drinkthe Mexican Bulldog, a combination of tequila and margarita andserved with a bottle of Corona beer turned upside down in a hugeglass. “This is definitely the most unforgettable thing I had here”,Sam said, taking short sips after another, almost in quick succession, leaving the glass almost half-empty.“It’s like being instantlytransported to a little Italiantown, not that I’ve everbeen but what I imagine itto be. Quaint and colorful, very charming!” she said, looking more and moreenchanted by the scenery’sundeniable charm with herevery gaze and step.”TUSCANY AT MCKINLEY HILLMain Street RestaurantAfter taking a short stroll, Sam stopped by Main Street Restaurant, a Canadian-American jointoffering a mouthwatering selection of meat dishes, comfort food and desserts.Sam instantly fell in love with the place, visibly enthralled by the little personal touches that ownerChef Adam Tan gave to the place and the nostalgic ambiance they exude. Sam was so impressedby the homey look of the restaurant that she could not help herself but quiz Chef Adam on almostevery minute detail of its design—from his choice of music, his collection of fancy old records, timeworn photographs hanging on the walls and even the font used in the chalkboard-like menu.Sam finally had a bite of Main Street’s Crab Cake, which was served with mango salsa. The CrabCake’s soft, moist and creamy fill and crunchy texture were enough to whet her appetite for thefeast to come.Chef Adam introduced Sam to Canada’s national dish, the Poutine, thick cut fries that come withbeef gravy and cheese curds. “Where have you been all my life, Poutine? This is total comfort, drunk, stoner food. It’s like a bear hug in food form!” she exclaimed, adding that the dish couldhave been perfect for the Mexican Bulldog she just had at B&T Mexican Kitchen.Sam was literally lost for words while going through the delightful course of entrees, which includedGrilled Steak on Rice, a choice cut Kitayama steak served with rosemary rub, herbed rice andfried egg on top; Grilled Pork Chop, which gets its flavorful taste from its home-made barbequesauce; and the Chopped Pork Belly, which is served with salsa verde and crostini. The Kitayamasteak was a standout for Sam calling it as tender enough and cooked to perfection.Everything ended on a super fun sweet note as Sam tried Main Street’s homemade ice cream, which comes in mouthwateringly sweet flavors like milk and cookie dough, organic maple andcandied bacon, smores and malted milk – all of which were ridiculously delicious and divineaccording to Sam.For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 0917-815 8187 or send an email toeatmain@gmail.com“I would definitely tell mygood friend to take his wifefor their anniversary here”,she said before leaving.Shortly after realizing that it was too early in the day to get tipsy,Sam made a vow to slay the Mexican Bulldog with her friends whenshe comes back. For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 221-63453/0917-8969939.3233

“I love that this place isaccessible! And there areso many restaurants tochoose from”TUSCANY AT MCKINLEY HILLPlanet GrapesIt was late in the afternoon when Sam decided to drop by Planet Grapes, a winebar where drinking of the world’s most popular beverage is reinvented through thepeculiar pairing of wine and exotic Filipino street food. The extensive wine collection, which ranges from fine white classics such as KundeFamily Sauvignon Blanc to rare and premium aged wines like the MV WoodstockVery Old Fortified, intricately spread across the walls of the store compelled Sam tolook around, even proceeding to the 2nd level of the wine bar.A fancy wine vending machine tucked in one corner caught the attention of theoften sharp-eyed Sam, who was instantly amazed by its innovative features includingits ability to dispense certain amounts of wine with just one swipe of a card, which can be bought for as low as P500 and reloaded any time. With the help ofthe store’s wine connoisseur, one can learn the proper way of appreciating wine, arather tricky art Sam mastered with undeniable flair.Sam tried two sets of white and red wines, carefully following the correct sequenceof proper drinking of wine: pour the wine to the glass, hold the glass by its stemand swirl the wine to gauge its color and consistency, appreciate its scent, take asmall sip and play with the liquid inside the mouth to discern its hidden flavors. To get the most out of the wines, Sam was given a selection of finger food, whichincluded Siomai, Baked Camembert Cheese and the good ‘ole Filipino delicacyBalut, which she didn’t take too well. Cheese and wine was a no-brainer for Sam,although she did explain that each of the food served to her produced a differentkind of taste when paired with a particular wine. Sam went on with her wine discoveryone glass after another while listening intently to the wine expert who heartilyshared every bit of thing she knows about wine. After a while, Sam came with atangy conclusion.“Planet Grapes is about wine without the drama so people who are intimidatedby wine, myself included, could go and relax, have some good wine with goodcompany.” she said, heaping praises to the staff’s flair for wines and for the fruitfulexperience she just had.For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 551-3713, visit www.planetgrapes.com.ph or e-mail info@planetgrapes.com.ph.Christmas is the perfect time to catchup with family and friends over afestive meal. No bone so it’s hassle-free slicing and you can also appreciatethe taste of the steak in its glorious simplicity. For those who want a bite in their steaks, those who want to feel themeat -- still tender though -- work in their mouths and appreciate thejuices sealed in by perfect searing, the T-Bone (Wagyu, grade 6) will deliver just that.As the cut implies, there’s a bone in this one which not only adds to the flavor but alsoa little maneuvering with your knife and fork.If you want a smooth take on steak with an opulent play of silky texture, then the Tenderloin(Wagyu) with Foie Gras is your ticket to a heavenly encounter. This bonelesscut, absolute tender perfection, with the foie gras bursting in its rich flavor the secondit hits your tongue, coating your taste buds with a blanket of buttery goodness. It’senjoyed best when cooked medium rare as the juices of both the steak and the foiegras are soaked by the bed of mashed potatoes it sits on.Finally, should you feel the need to go all-out, then go with the Prime Porterhouse(dry-aged, highest certified angus beef). Devoid of seasoning, sauces or any kind ofmarinade, it is with this choice that you will understand my claim that the beef speaksfor itself. It has a sweetness to it and even if it has the bone in, the meat melts in yourmouth.Melo’s is a discerning carnivore’s paradise. For those who know their steak or wouldlike to explore and know more about choice beef cuts, it’ll be your regular haunt/spot-- and you wouldn’t need an occasion to be there, just the need to havea great ‘meat’-ing place! For restaurant reservations and inquiries, please call 403-5968-69.34“Melo’s is adiscerningcarnivore’sparadise.”

BURGOS CIRCLE AT FORBES TOWN CENTERCantinettaWritten by Issa LittonItalian fare like pizza and pasta have become our go-to foodwhen looking for something to fill us up for hours on end.Cantinetta’s dishes meet your expectations in servingtraditional Italian offerings but leave you surprisingly light andguilt-free. All in celebration of the Italian way of eating, dolcegusto -- especially when shared in good company! The AntiPasti Platter sets you off quite well with their prosciuttowith mozzarella on baguettes, and grilled prawns with slices oflemon. This dish with the mix of salty, fried, and grilled samplingsis perfect to wake your taste buds for what else is to come.A standout in their pasta selection is the Tartufo, a bold pasta dishgiven its creamy white sauce with thin slices of parma ham (saltyslivers that cut through the rich cream), fresh & dried mushrooms(lovely play on texture and condensed earthy flavor), and truffle oil. However, I personally found eating this dish with the grillata de carneplatter (grilled chicken, pork, beef tenderloin, and Italian sausage withpepper sauce) even more satisfying.Should you want to try out pasta with red sauce, the Pescatora Linguini is madeup of tangy tomato loaded with seafood like shrimp, squid, mussels and clams.Pair this rich dish with the Cantinetta Classica pizza, topped with pepperoni, thinlysliced bellpeppers, minced beef, Italian sausage and mozzarella. The panna cotta serves as a wonderful finish. This smooth, vanilla-flavored, lighterthan-flanconsistency dessert will coat your tongue with a delicate sweetness totame all the rich flavors you enjoyed in the course of the meal.So if you find yourself in the Burgos Circle area wanting a bite of Italian Cuisine, head over to Cantinetta! For restaurant reservations and inquiries, please call 403-5220.“Cantinetta’s dishesmeet your expectationsin serving traditionalItalian offerings but leaveyou surprisingly light andguilt-free. There’s alsothe Assiette Terroir (cold cuts) platter made up of homemade ham, sausages, rillete, and three kinds of country-style pate -- two of which are duck and thethird is pork.Their soup selection includes La Classique soupe a l’oignon gratinee (classiconion soup baked with grated cheese) and at the time I dropped by, they alsohad traditional bouillabaisse (fish soup). They aim to offer something new everyweek, so ask the waiters if they have something special prepared.Main courses include seafood such as gambas a la Provencale, riz safrani (kingprawns flambé in anis liquor with saffron rice) and Saint Jacques a la fondue depoireaux et riz (scallops in creamy leek sauce and saffron rice). Both are verylight, very juicy, and colored with lovely reds (ratatouille with the prawns, andtomato salsa with the scallops). You can also try the Tournedos Rossini (beef tenderloin with foie gras) with itsthick, creamy duck foie gras sauce. Don’t hold back from scooping the saucewith bread, or swirling your sliced beef in it before taking a bite. They havetheir foie gras flown in from France every week -- fresh, not frozen.Save room for the crème brulee or the fondant Coeur caramel au beurre saleon chocolat (warm chocolate cake with whipped salted butter caramel), thatoozes with pure chocolate goodness.French dining and indulgence need not be stuffy. The Philippine Star’sresident food connoisseurPepper Teehankee takes hisfamily to a satiating gastronomicdiscovery at NewportMall at Resorts WorldManila. Get to know moreabout his culinary expeditionas he pursues his passionfor eating and find outthe things that impressedManila’ top glitterati andlifestyle authority.NEWPORT MALLat resorts world manilaImpressionsWritten by Pepper TeehankeeNewport Mall at Resorts World Manila is known to have some really good restaurantsthat are the city’s best kept secrets. I decided to take my family out one night and randomlytry some of them.First stop was Impressions. Any French restaurant in Manila that would discerninglychoose to serve Beurre d’ Isigny butter with their homemade breads signified a properFrench meal. I had no doubt about this since Impressions was owned by Chef CyrilleSoenen. I have been eating his food since he got to Manila several years ago. He isone of those innovative chefs who personalize his cooking without really veering awayfrom traditional French cuisine. This was evident with my starter, which was Crispy Soft Boiled Egg, Marinated Scallops,Herring Caviar, Watercress, and Asparagus Vichysoisse. The Vichysoisse was rightfullypoured only when the bowl was presented to the diner as not to make the crispy softboiled egg soggy. It was interesting to have a crispy texture outside with the soft oozingegg yolk mixing into the sweet scallops, salty caviar, and creamy soup. My mothertried the Pan Fried Diver Scallops and Mushroom Risotto with Truffles, Seared DuckLiver, Mushroom Emulsion and Parsley jus. Cyrille again keeps the elements of Frenchcooking with the truffles and duck liver and melds it wonderfully with the Italian risotto. The umami flavor of mushroom emulsion blended perfectly with the dish.I was fascinated with the flavors of my starter that I opted to have soup as well. SearedScallops, Crispy Chicken Skin, Bonito Consomme with Miso Vaporized oyster was arefreshing and light choice, again with the umami influences of Japanese cuisine. Thebonito consomme had the flavoring of the Japanese staple soup stock “dashi” madefrom the bonito fish flakes which complemented the slightly salty misoand the tastes of the sea in the form of scallops and oyster juice.I opted to go simple for my entree of US Beef Tenderloin with foie graswith Cappuccino of Truffle Mashed Potatoes, challenging them to grillit medium rare, but more on the rare side. This is not easy to cook as Iwanted the very thick slab of tenderloin more on the rare side, withouthaving the middle of the meat border on cold. The experiencedkitchen cooked my meat exactly how I wanted it, with a slight warmthin the middle of this almost rare and perfectly cooked steak. My dinner ended perfectly with a sinful dessert called “Crispy Apple”served with salted caramel, creme Anglaise, white chocolate sauce, vanilla, and salted caramel creme glace. The cored applewas light and crispy and melted in my mouth with thatultra-creamy homemade salted caramel ice cream.I was in heaven.Impressions certainly made an impression on myentire food loving family. We vowed to return soonto try the other enticing dishes on the menu.

NEWPORT MALLat resorts world manilaTWG TeaWritten by Pepper TeehankeeWe walked through Newport Mall and browsed through the shops whichstay open quite late. We chanced upon TWG Tea, that tea salon I lovedand discovered in Singapore years ago. I convinced my family to haveafter dinner tea.TWG Tea was picture perfect... exactly what a beautiful tea salon oughtto look like. Roughly 800 teas were offered in their extensive menu.My father was relieved to choose from several decaffeinated teas so hewouldn’t have a problem sleeping that night. I was surprised to find outthat TWG Tea also served food as I thought it was just a tea and dessertplace. Browsing through the menu was tempting as the dishes offeredsounded great. I was stuffed from the meal in Impressions caved in andordered TWG Tea’s irresistible macarons and other tea-infused delicacies.I tried a variety of macarons, all were delicious and crispy outsideand soft inside, as macarons should be. None of the macarons wereoverly sweet, which was a welcome surprise. The tea infused ice creamswere incredibly tasty and not too sweet either, just the way I like it.URL: http://becausecandysaysso.blogspot.com/2013/01/bacardi-night.html“TWG Tea was pictureperfect... exactly whata beautiful tea salonought to look like”EASTWOOD CITYPUBLIKO Eat+DrinkGastro PubAs a host of arguably the most popular evening radio talkshow and being one of the most recognizable faces in theMetro’s nightlife scene, it would be easy for anyone tothink that Sam YG (Samir Gogna in real life) fancies brightparty lights and raucous revelries, places where he can fullydisplay his wacky personality while carousing all night longup to the wee hours.Sam says he is familiar with Publiko and that he looksforward to checking out its great lineup of imported draftbeers. “They got a great beer selection. They have myfavorites Hoagaarden and Beck’s, and you have them in tap,so they’re really fresh, which is a good thing,” said a smilingSam, who confessed being instantly smitten by the steady, homey ambiance and relaxing feel of the gastro pub.TV Host, Radio Jock andcertified partyphile Sam YGchecks out Eastwood City’snewest and hottest nightlifehotspot. The huge servingthat included four slices of meatloaf wrapped in bacon, and served with corn and carrots, flavorful onion gravyand steamed rice, was good enough for two, accordingto him. After a few digs at the meatloaf, he was fascinatedby how it was perfectly-cooked and how tenderthe meat was.The Barbeque Ribs, grilled smoked pork ribs with friesand cilantro lime slaw, was an easy favorite for Sam. “Itliterally fell off the bones! It’s not like other barbequeribs that get their taste from the sauce,” Sam said, raving about the meat’s tenderness and the flavors thatwent all the way to the bones.Of course the tea hit the spot, with myself wishfully thinking that the hotliquid I was drinking was actually melting the fat stored in my tummy. Ihave tried several varieties in TWG Tea but I am often drawn to their“Place Vendome” tea, an all-time favorite of mine, which I had to havethat night. Alas, I could not eat another bite after that.Impressions and TWG Tea are going to be added to my favorite placesto visit in Newport Mall at Resorts World, along with Beurre Blanc, TaoYuan, and Cru Steakhouse. EASTWOOD CITYRed Crab Alimango House & Flying PigA couple of hours after closing their daily radio program, thepair took a short drive to Eastwood City to check out RedCrab Alimango House, a restaurant that made its name fromserving succulent crab dishes and other seafood specialties.By the time they set their foot on the restaurant, Chico couldnot help but be intrigued by the restaurant’s unique jar-likelighting fixtures, which complemented well the spacious andintricately designed dining area.Upon soaking in the cozy ambiance of the place, a simmeringbowl of Halaan Soup was served as starter. Del gave ita two-thumbs-up, saying that the savory taste of the clambroth reminded her of her mom’s cooking.Their meal took a healthy turn with two delightful saladbowls, the Cebu Danggit Salad and the Crab and MangoSalad. A self-confessed salad-eater and fan of the famousCebu delicacy, Chico marveled at his every bite, “I reallyloved the Cebu Danggit Salad. It’s like getting your danggitfix in a refreshing and healthier way.”“The balance of the saltiness of the danggit, and the freshgreen, allows you to eat more of it,” Del, chimed in, ravingalso about the dressing, which they both think is verylight and just right. After having their fill of their newfound favorite, the pair had a taste of Deep Fried Lapu-Lapu in Chili Mango Sauce, a mouthwateringdish that had them fancying its unique sweetand salty tang and spicy twist. Crab Maritess,Red Crab’s famed house specialty, was servednext and it was good as advertised, according tothem. “For me, this is the crowning glory of theentire meal,” a visibly amazed Chico said, addingthat the dish’s simplicity didn’t take away much ofits tastiness and interplay of flavors.“This a perfect placeto go if you want to impresssomeone, whetherit’s your parents, boss orloved one” – ChicoThough admitting she was not that into seafood,Delamar could not agree more, “Thecombination of the crab and olive oil, with thefried garlic, it’s just perfect. It’s healthy and tastyat the same time.”Just when they thought the feast was over,a delightful course from The Flying Pig, RedCrab’s sister all-meat French-American diner, was served. Banging Bagnet, crispy pork bellyserved with adobo rice, special vinegar andbalsamic liver sauce, was a no-brainer, much likethe Pork Treasure Pot, and the Pork and Beans, both of which easily appealed to Chico and Delgiven its flavorful and tender meat that fell offthe bones. While they absolutely loved the meat-dishes,the Flying Pig, the restaurant’s namesake specialtychicken lollipops, had them madly smitten. The two continued going over the dishes theyjust had while having their sweet tooth fix withthe classic Leche Flan, literally leaving a sweetnote on the longtime duo just before they headto their next destination.Red Crab Alimango House and Flying Pig are locatedat the GF of Eastwood Mall. It’snot your usualrestaurant, it’s aplace where youcan bond, enjoya good conversationand have fun.The pancakes willbring out the kidon you.” - ChicoA short walk across Eastwood Mall Open Parkbrought Chico and Del at Slappy Cakes, anAmerican diner that originated from Portland,Oregon, a place where foodies can enjoy breakfastall-day long, together with a sumptuous variety ofcomfort food and a delightful selection of do-ityourselfpancakes.The sleek-looking couches made out of fine wood, painted walls, intricately-designed interiors andopen counter easily provided a distinct Americanvibe, a very inviting ambiance they instantly fell inlove with upon their entry.“This place is very American in look and feel,”Chico said while slowly walking towards their seat, admitting that he frequents the place for breakfastand of course, for the incomparable fun of makinghis own chocolate pancakes. As they sat in frontof the griddle, the fun-loving duo were temptedto begin making their own pancakes, though thelook and aroma of the Cheese Sticks and BalsamicGarlic Burger gave them enough reasons to pausemomentarily.“The Cheese Sticks are very light and fluffy, you’llnever get tired of eating it unlike the other cheesesticks I had before,” said Del while dipping thehand-breaded sticks to the marinara sauce. They marveled at how good the Balsamic GarlicBurger was and it’s no surprise that the burgerbecame an easy favorite for the two, labeling it asa must-try. “The Balsamic vinegar really enhancedthe flavors of the meat, and the potato on the sideis a definite winner,” Del said. Chico also loved thepotato wedges and the burger’s parmesan cheese. The Southern Fried Chicken Tenders, deep-friendchicken fingers served with special spices, sausage gravy and crispy potatoes, was a stand-outfor the two of them that they almost ran out ofwords to describe it.By the time their pancakes were done, Chico wentchoco-loco. “I love the chocolate pancakes. It’s justthe whole chocolate overload that I really enjoyevery time I eat here,” he muses, while putting aheap of chocolate chips and rich chocolate syrupon his steaming pancakes.Midway through their delightful meal, Del discoveredsomething on the menu that would furtherspice up their culinary adventure. “The fact thatthey offer alcohol any time of the day, I’m sold! This is just a perfect way to feel good and makethe whole experience more fun,” a seeminglygiddy Del remarked.Chico and Del loved the place, the food and theDIY pancakes so much that slews of ideas andquirky thoughts came and went as fast as theirpancakes were cooked. “Let’s say you’re sittinghere with your crush, you can just make a heartshapedpancake and see how she reacts,” saidChico in jest. “This is a perfect dating spot. Youcan just sit here, enjoy the food, have a goodconversation, while having fun and making pancakestogether,” Del said, adding that the place isalso ideal for families and groups of friends.Given their almost same thoughts on each of theentrees they tried, it was obvious that the longtimeon-air partners are in harmony this time. Therewere hardly any of the usual disagreements orheated arguments that ‘Rushers’ hear over theradio every morning. It was just mutual elation anda resounding eagerness to dine together at SlappyCakes once again.Slappy Cakes is located at the ground floor ofEastwood Mall, across the mall’s Open Park.
