ANNUAL MEETING – PRESBYTERY & SYNOD SA<strong>Record</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Service</strong>Reverend Leonard (<strong>Len</strong>) John <strong>Jude</strong>31 October - 2 November 2013<strong>Len</strong> was born <strong>in</strong> St Arnaud, Victoria, <strong>in</strong> 1948, andlived <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> towns <strong>in</strong> country Victoria beforehis family settled <strong>in</strong> Bendigo. <strong>Len</strong>’s family was<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the Methodist <strong>Church</strong>, where heparticipated <strong>in</strong> worship, Sunday school, ChristianEndeavour, Methodist Order <strong>of</strong> Knights and youthgroup activities at a number <strong>of</strong> churches. He wasconfirmed at Forest Street Bendigo and taughtSunday school at Quarry Hill. <strong>Len</strong>’s secondaryeducation was at Bendigo High School after which hewas tra<strong>in</strong>ed as a Primary School teacher at BendigoTeachers’ College and taught <strong>in</strong> country Victoria forseveral years. <strong>Len</strong> was a member <strong>of</strong> the BendigoYMCA Harriers, serv<strong>in</strong>g as president and receiv<strong>in</strong>gfrom the YMCA a ten year service award thathighlighted his encouragement <strong>of</strong> younger members.After <strong>Len</strong> and Marie’s marriage <strong>Len</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue teach<strong>in</strong>guntil their move to Victor Harbor SA, when, <strong>in</strong> 1972,he commenced study at the Adelaide Bible Institute(now BCSA). This move came about through a desireto explore a sense <strong>of</strong> call to missionary teach<strong>in</strong>g andthe impact <strong>of</strong> a teach<strong>in</strong>g mission by the Rev Ge<strong>of</strong>freyB<strong>in</strong>gham, then Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> ABI. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Len</strong>’s threeyears at BCSA he had his faith and vision expandedthrough the teach<strong>in</strong>g and fellowship and completedhis Licentiate <strong>of</strong> Theology through the MelbourneCollege <strong>of</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>ity. Whilst at Victor Harbor <strong>Len</strong> alsotaught Sunday school at Adare Methodist, and servedas Student Pastor <strong>in</strong> the South Coast United Parish,preach<strong>in</strong>g at Nangkita, Goolwa, Port Elliot, Adare,Newland and Yilki.Dur<strong>in</strong>g his third year at BCSA, <strong>Len</strong> felt called topreach<strong>in</strong>g and to orda<strong>in</strong>ed m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> the Methodist<strong>Church</strong>. He candidated, was accepted for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g andbegan study at Park<strong>in</strong>-Wesley College <strong>in</strong> 1975, dur<strong>in</strong>gwhich time he was a Student Pastor <strong>in</strong> the Stirl<strong>in</strong>gDistrict United Parish. <strong>Len</strong> has fond memories <strong>of</strong>m<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g with the folk <strong>in</strong> the congregations <strong>of</strong>Aldgate, Stirl<strong>in</strong>g, Mylor, Bridgewater, Verdun,Ironbank, Scott’s Creek and Mt L<strong>of</strong>ty.At the 1976 annual meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the MethodistConference <strong>Len</strong> was placed on the station<strong>in</strong>g sheet togo to Luc<strong>in</strong>dale, <strong>in</strong> the state’s South East. So <strong>in</strong> 1977it was <strong>of</strong>f to Luc<strong>in</strong>dale with Marie and three children towork as a probationed M<strong>in</strong>ister. <strong>Len</strong> completed aDiploma <strong>of</strong> Religious Education and was orda<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>the Luc<strong>in</strong>dale <strong>Unit<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> on December 19 th 1978,by the South Eastern (SA) Presbytery, later namedThe Coorong Presbytery. <strong>Len</strong> travelled extensively forpreach<strong>in</strong>g opportunities at Lochaber, Francis,Naracoorte, Wrattonbully, Luc<strong>in</strong>dale, Avenue Range,Marcollat and Greenways. Amalgamation withNaracoorte, shar<strong>in</strong>g leadership <strong>of</strong> the Naracoorteyouth, lead<strong>in</strong>g the Biscuit Flat Bible study, harvestthanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a shear<strong>in</strong>g shed, a visit by the GodSquad, an evangelistic mission, a Lay witnessweekend, vacation Bible Schools, arrang<strong>in</strong>g schoolsem<strong>in</strong>ars, leadership <strong>of</strong> the Presbytery children’scamp at Robe and Agricultural Show outreach werehighlights <strong>of</strong> the five years at Luc<strong>in</strong>dale. <strong>Len</strong> servedthe Presbytery as evangelism contact person and asresult attended a Vision Valley Conference onevangelism. <strong>Len</strong> also taught ‘Equipp<strong>in</strong>g Lay Personsfor M<strong>in</strong>istry’ with its emphasis on listen<strong>in</strong>g skills.In 1982 the <strong>Jude</strong>’s moved to Cleve to share m<strong>in</strong>istry<strong>in</strong> the County Jervois Parish. Many kilometerstravelled on dirt roads between Wharm<strong>in</strong>da, DarkePeak, Driver River, Rudall, Arno Bay, Coolanie,Cowell and Cleve further expanded <strong>Len</strong>’s appreciation<strong>of</strong> country life and the faith <strong>of</strong> the people. Teach<strong>in</strong>gwith Christian Endeavour, leadership <strong>of</strong> a youngadults study group, co-ord<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> the EyrePresbytery children’s camp at Thuruna, facilitat<strong>in</strong>g thefirst Christian Option Programme with the ScriptureUnion team, teach<strong>in</strong>g Humanities at Cleve AreaSchool with the M<strong>in</strong>isters’ Fraternal, serv<strong>in</strong>g on CleveArea School Council, holidays at Arno Bay, Port Neill31 October – 2 November 2013 Presbytery and Synod meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Record</strong> <strong>of</strong> service: Rev <strong>Len</strong> <strong>Jude</strong>A10.6
Presbytery & Synod SA31 October - 2 November 2013and C<strong>of</strong>f<strong>in</strong> Bay were memorable moments on EyrePen<strong>in</strong>sula. <strong>Len</strong> served the Eyre Presbytery as amember <strong>of</strong> its Pastoral Relations Committee andevangelism contact person.In 1987 <strong>Len</strong> commenced m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> the Berri-BarmeraParish. This placement was busy from the outset withthe constant flow <strong>of</strong> funerals, wedd<strong>in</strong>gs, welfaresupport, and visitation to two busy hospitals andengagement with the Aborig<strong>in</strong>al community. <strong>Len</strong> wastreasurer <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>isters Fraternal that handled manythousands <strong>of</strong> dollars <strong>of</strong> government money foremergency relief. M<strong>in</strong>istry with the Aborig<strong>in</strong>alcommunity <strong>in</strong>cluded baptisms <strong>in</strong> a home at GerardMission, the baptisms <strong>of</strong> six or seven Aborig<strong>in</strong>alchildren <strong>in</strong> the Barmera church and a number <strong>of</strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al funerals. Several small groups participated<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Unit<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Vision programme us<strong>in</strong>g ‘Twelve Keysto an Effective <strong>Church</strong>’. <strong>Len</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ated andsupported many Glossop High School sem<strong>in</strong>ars andChristian Option Programmes <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> PrimarySchools. <strong>Len</strong> supported the Kids Clubs and youthgroups and their capable leaders. Even<strong>in</strong>g services atK<strong>in</strong>gston-on-Murray were also a significant part <strong>of</strong> thevaried m<strong>in</strong>istry at this time, <strong>Len</strong> led Lay Preachertra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses and encouraged people to use theirgifts. Confirmation classes were a feature <strong>of</strong> <strong>Len</strong>’sm<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> Berri-Barmera, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> one <strong>in</strong>stance <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>eteen confirmations at one service. <strong>Len</strong> served theWakefield Presbytery as convenor <strong>of</strong> its Faith andOrder committee for a number <strong>of</strong> years and then fortwo years as Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Presbytery <strong>of</strong>ficiat<strong>in</strong>gat ord<strong>in</strong>ations, <strong>in</strong>ductions and commission<strong>in</strong>gs,chair<strong>in</strong>g Stand<strong>in</strong>g Committee and serv<strong>in</strong>g on thePastoral Relations Committee,In 1994, after seven years <strong>in</strong> the Riverland, <strong>Len</strong>commenced a placement <strong>in</strong> the Onkapar<strong>in</strong>ga Parishliv<strong>in</strong>g at Woodside, shar<strong>in</strong>g preach<strong>in</strong>g and pastoralresponsibilities at Balhannah, Charleston, Lobethal,Murdoch Hill and Woodside. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time vibrantjunior youth and young adults groups, expand<strong>in</strong>gSunday schools, and the emergence <strong>of</strong> freshleadership evidenced new life. In 1999 Balhannahbecame a separate entity while <strong>Len</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istered withthe folk <strong>of</strong> the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g four Congregations under thenew name <strong>of</strong> Onkapar<strong>in</strong>ga Valley <strong>Unit<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong>es.Study groups, teach<strong>in</strong>g sem<strong>in</strong>ars, kids club, youthgroup, Lay Preachers gather<strong>in</strong>gs, speak<strong>in</strong>g at craftgroups, conduct<strong>in</strong>g services at three nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes,support <strong>of</strong> the Oakbank Area School chapla<strong>in</strong>, theAlpha course and ‘Forty Days <strong>of</strong> Purpose’ studiescontributed to growth <strong>in</strong> faith and the development <strong>of</strong>leaders. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time <strong>Len</strong> served on the Mt L<strong>of</strong>tyPresbytery Pastoral Relations Committee and was amember and president <strong>of</strong> the Woodside RecreationGrounds Committee. <strong>Len</strong> and Marie’s five childrenwere all married dur<strong>in</strong>g their stay at Woodside, three<strong>of</strong> them <strong>in</strong> the Woodside church.In 2006, after twelve years <strong>in</strong> the hills, <strong>Len</strong> beganm<strong>in</strong>istry with the Ald<strong>in</strong>ga-McLaren Vale-Willungal<strong>in</strong>ked Congregations. At the end <strong>of</strong> <strong>Len</strong>’s first yearWillunga become a separate entity with <strong>Len</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>gthe Ald<strong>in</strong>ga-McLaren Vale L<strong>in</strong>k. Growth <strong>in</strong> faith andfellowship cont<strong>in</strong>ued through Sunday even<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>g-alongs,mid-week and home communions, pre and postworship morn<strong>in</strong>g teas, the re-establishment <strong>of</strong> Sundayschools, regular work<strong>in</strong>g bees, café church, cafémorn<strong>in</strong>g teas where the young serve the older, <strong>Len</strong>’slead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> two Bible study groups, his preach<strong>in</strong>g andteach<strong>in</strong>g and pastoral work especially at funerals and<strong>in</strong> hospitals. <strong>Service</strong>s at nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes and aged carefacilities gave a chapla<strong>in</strong>cy feel to some <strong>of</strong> the workand this was complemented by a steady <strong>in</strong>-flow <strong>of</strong>younger families and other new-comers tak<strong>in</strong>g theirplace <strong>in</strong> the fellowships and serv<strong>in</strong>g their Lord.<strong>Len</strong> is grateful for the many people <strong>in</strong> Congregationshe has served, the many colleagues <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry, bothlay and orda<strong>in</strong>ed, the wider church, his teachers andcountless others who have contributed to his life. Heis thankful for the support they have <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> theproclamation <strong>of</strong> the gospel <strong>of</strong> God’s grace <strong>in</strong> JesusChrist, our Lord, and <strong>in</strong> the worship <strong>of</strong> our graciousGod.<strong>Len</strong>’s wife, Marie, cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>of</strong>fer strongencouragement, faithful support and wise counsel.Their children, Stephen, Talitha, Mark, Naomi, Pauland families are a constant source <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spiration.<strong>Len</strong> retires on December 31 st 2013 after thirty-fiveyears <strong>of</strong> orda<strong>in</strong>ed m<strong>in</strong>istry, <strong>in</strong> the assurance thatJesus Christ is Lord <strong>of</strong> all and that he has brought usthis far by his grace.31 October – 2 November 2013 Presbytery and Synod meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Record</strong> <strong>of</strong> service: Rev <strong>Len</strong> <strong>Jude</strong>A10.7
