Gulf Daily News Sunday, 9th June 2013 9Gemini May 22nd - June 21stdefines our existencehelping hand of each and every member ofthe society. Let’s join hands with the securitypersonnel for the sake of our own, and society’ssafety.DuriSafety alertAccidents and deaths are no longer acause of serious concern for the people ofBahrain because that’s all we see and read inthe newspapers. the blame cannot be put onany particular person or group of people asno soul has the time and concern to ensurethe safety of oneself and others on the roads. But today i am writing this letter because irealise the magnitude of importance of lifeand feel that it doesn’t deserve to be shattereddue to minor carelessness of the driver, pedestrians etc. or the people concerned withthe maintenance of roads.i would like to bring to the attention of authoritiesconcerned the maintenance of thetraffic controlling provisions and the roadsthemselves. in most parts of Bahrain polereflectors which are there for guiding andrerouting drivers have become quiet deceivingin nature as most of them have lost theirlustre and brightness which actually resultsin drivers not noticing these poles, causingserious accidents, which i think is a cause formajor concern.Action has to be taken immediately ratherthan wait for a day when you or i will have toface this disastrous and unavoidable problem. Most people might think that this is not a bigissue to be raised when the country is goingthrough turbulent times, but i always believethat prevention is better than cure.i hope the readers of this daily will understandthe seriousness of the issue and spreadthis matter, so that people may be extra cautiouswhile driving through these hazardousareas and some serious action will be takensoon.Life is at risk on these particular roads becausewithout the illuminated poles there isnothing that drivers can do other than createan accident (especially those not aware ofthe problem). i would be extremely gratefulif these poles are soon repaired because, through this small step Bahrain will slowlybut surely advance towards having entirelysafe and secure roadsAthul Thomas BennyOpen not shutBrAdLey Manning has admitted leakingmore than 750,000 classified documentsto WikiLeaks while stationed in Baghdad asan American intelligence analyst. in doing sohe broke Us law, betrayed important secretsas well as trivial ones and made a mockeryof the vetting system that exposed him tosuch sensitive material. At the end of his court martial, whichbegan last week, he will almost certainly behanded a stiff sentence. He deserves to goto prison. no government, however open, can function without confidential diplomaticcommunications. no military operation cansucceed if its officers have to presume thattheir reports are going to be published. evenso, the Pentagon’s pursuit of a convictionon the capital chargeof aiding the enemyis harsh. the sentenceof life without parolethat such a sentencecould carry would beexcessive.Manning’s supporters, who gather mostmornings outside thehigh-security Marylandbase where he is beingheld, call him a politicalprisoner. some see himas heir to an Americantradition of brave andclear-sighted whistleblowingembodiedby daniel ellsberg, the former militaryanalyst who leakedthe Pentagon Papers, which revealed theextent of Us involvementin Vietnam. Heis neither of these things. When posted toBaghdad he was a confused and profoundlyunhappy 21-year-old. From the available evidencehe was intellectually curious but notimpressively informed. He was not allowedto be open about his homosexuality owingto laws that have since been repealed, butwas open nonetheless on Facebook abouthis myriad frustrations. He has been detainedfor breaking rules that apply to all Usmilitary personnel, not for his politics.in a pre-trial statement Manning claimedthat his goal in copying and sending somuch material to WikiLeaks was to spark adebate “over the role of the military and ourforeign policy in general”. He has sparkedplenty of debate, but mainly on another subject– whistle-blowing and the duty of thestate to protect those who engage in it.With notable exceptions, including cableson the flimsy basis for holding certainGuantanamo Bay detainees, the leakeddiplomatic traffic wasuncontroversial. ifanything, it revealed amore thoughtful anddiligent foreign servicethan America’s habitualcritics were inclined toadmit. What promptedthe mainstreammedia’s interest inWikiLeaks’ output wasits earlier leak of gunPublished letters arenot necessarily theviews of the Editor.Readers wishing tomake a complaintthrough the GDNshould provide full detailsof the complainttogether with theircontact telephonenumbers.camera footage, also supplied by Manning, from a Us Apache helicopter shooting andkilling 11 civilians in Baghdad in 2007.the narrow question of Manning’s guiltor innocence has already been decided. He has pleaded guilty to 10 of 22 charges, which alone could mean a 20-year sentence. But in ruling on the other charges and anyadditional jail time, Judge denise Lind, whois presiding without a jury, should considerone simple counterfactual: What if that guncamera video had never been made public?it reveals a tragedy and, at best, appallingbattlefield judgment. At worst it shows awar crime. since 9/11 the “enemy” that theprosecution in this trial alleges Manninghelped has spread to every continent.the security apparatus that pursues it hasproliferated to meet the threat and its intelligenceis vital. But in the end an opensociety’s best defence is openness. thatentails disclosure, and to that, too, Manningcan plead guilty. He deserves a measure ofleniency.H GI have a dream...AFew years ago a group of young Swedish musiciansencouraged us to “Dream the impossible dream”.On picking up my copy of your newspaper the othermorning, I couldn’t help wondering whether there wassome truth in their words. In fact, the oppositeusually occurs, as investors flockto ‘safer’ plays.”For the week, the Dow Jones industrial averagerose 0.9pc, the S&P 500 added 0.8pc andthe Nasdaq advanced 0.4pc.Next week, there appear to be few obviouscatalysts to change the equation. Only two S&P500 companies – H&R Block and PVHCorporation – are scheduled to report results. The economic data calendar is light, thoughMay retail sales on Thursday and the preliminaryreading on June consumer sentiment onFriday will be closely watched.Inflation data will also be on the agenda. TheUS Producer Price Index, set for release onFriday, is forecast to rise just 0.1pc in May,according to economists polled by Reuters, aftera drop of 0.7pc in April. On a year-over-yearbasis, overall PPI is expected to rise1.4pc in May, the Reuters Poll showed.“It looks like we’re shaping up fora traditional summer where we’llbuild a base and perhaps enter intothe doldrums of summer trading,”said LEK Securities director of tradingFrank Davis .With the exception of consumerstocks, which could be affected by theretail data, Davis added, “I’m not anticipatingany meaningful follow-throughto next week, but I’m not anticipatingany measurable pulldown either.”
