AbstractEight <strong>compounds</strong> were obta<strong>in</strong>ed from an ethanol extract from the aerial parts <strong>of</strong> Abies forrestii,by use <strong>of</strong> several different chromatographic techniques (size exclusion, TLC, normal andreverse ph<strong>as</strong>e). The chemical structure w<strong>as</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ed for three <strong>of</strong> them by use <strong>of</strong> MS- andNMR-techniques (the known diterpenes abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, 9,13(β)-epidioxy-8(14)-abieten-18-oic acid) and for one <strong>of</strong> them by compar<strong>in</strong>g to a standard on TLC (β-sitosterol).The rest w<strong>as</strong> either not pure enough or w<strong>as</strong> obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a too low concentration. The pulverizedplant material w<strong>as</strong> extracted <strong>with</strong> ethanol, purified <strong>with</strong> ethylacetate and fractionated <strong>with</strong>gradient elution over a silica gel column and a MCI-column. The <strong>compounds</strong> were isolated andpurified over silica gel-, Sephadex LH-20- and ODS-columns, and <strong>with</strong> P-TLC. The structures<strong>of</strong> the <strong>compounds</strong> were determ<strong>in</strong>ed by a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> LC-ESI MS, 1 H- and 13 C NMR data.The extracted <strong>compounds</strong> are well known <strong>compounds</strong> <strong>in</strong> other Abies species, but no recordshave been found describ<strong>in</strong>g earlier extraction from Abies forrestii.-4-
