TRAILS | DESTINATION RED LODGE© Creative Design WorksCome Out ‘n Play! When your backyard consists of over a million acres of high countrywilderness, being told to “Go outside and play” is literally the Best. Thing. Ever.Whether they were looking for gold, minerals, or adventure, the area’s earliestexplorers always knew our backcountry was part of our wealth. As early as1897, trails began snaking their way up the West Fork canyon, cleared by handwith hacksaws and pickaxes. Today those same trails can take you to countrythat has changed very little over the past century.First things first: There is absolutely no shame in a stream-side saunter. Some ofour best-loved terrain is a quiet path through the woods with plenty of boldersto perch upon and watch the creek burble past. Don’t let the big packs andheavy boots fool you: we love Silver Run, too.Cutting Ties in the West ForkIf you’ve ever walked the Basin Lakestrail south of Red Lodge in the WestFork canyon, you know that not onlyis there a beautiful waterfall-cascadewithin 100 yards of the trailhead, butit’s one of the more interesting, denselyforested short hikes in the area. And forcurious types, one of its mysteries is thatabout halfway up the trail, at over 8,000’elevation on a mountainside less than 10miles from town, it suddenly feels likeyou’re walking through an abandonedvillage. Who would have built permanentcabins in such a remote spot? you askyourself. (You know you do.)In 1887, the town of Red Lodge wasbrand-spankin-new. Census-takersrecorded no more than “nineteen tenthouses and five saloons” (also tents, naturally) that year. But the coal wasplentiful and high quality, and withintwo years, the railroad had come totown, the East Side mine was up andrunning, and the boom was on.That boom created a massive need forready-to-use timber. Conveniently, in thelate 1800s, a series of wildfires had sweptacross the Beartooth Front, burningpractically everything you can see fromtown, and turning that vast expanse offorest into a goldmine of standing, kilndriedlumber. The only problem wasgetting it to town.Try to imagine this valley back then. Afew tents and some wooden structuresin the valley. Frenetic construction onthe east side. Glacier Lake dam, whichcontrols Rock Creek’s flows, won’t bebuilt until 1937, so in high water thecreek becomes a serious force of nature. And beyond a 3-mile radius of today’sSnow Creek Saloon is wilderness.Getting to the Basin Lakes trail now isan easy 12-minutedrive. But as late as1917, the only roadup that canyon wentabout half that far.Beyond that, youwere getting nothingthrough but a string ofpackhorses. The men seeking tocut enough trees forboth the mines and agrowing communityweren’t going to wastehalf their day justgetting to work. So,doing what loggersdo, they built camps near their jobsites. One of those camps is what you’rewalking through on your way to BasinLakes. One Forest Service inventoryin the late 1960s showed 13 cabins, some watering troughs, a dump andrandom pieces of equipment up there, all left quietly decaying for most of acentury now. Other tie-hacker camps(so-named because of a similarity to theway railroad ties were cut) were in theWillow Creek valley, high up NicholsCreek, and on the Silver Run system.According to Mayor Brian Roat, whosegrandfather was on one of those tiehackercrews, “all those Finnlanders were© Kari Claytonwoodsmen, and they’dwork up there summerand winter, cutting trees.Where they were able toget horses in, they’d loadthe logs onto a bolsterwagon and haul them totown.” But where theycouldn’t—the reallysteep terrain—they hadto improvise. (Haveyou noticed how steepthat West Fork canyonis?) Several places, youcan see the “skid trails,”vertical gouges in themountainside wherethey would slide the logsdown to lower elevation. Once they gotthe logs to the valley floor, they wouldstack them all up creekside, waiting forspring.2 FACEBOOK.COM/REDLODGE TWITTER.COM/REDLODGEMONTANA

DESTINATION RED LODGE | TRAILS© Creative Design WorksAnd then before high water hit, theybuilt a diversion dam in town, at abouttoday’s Bearcreek bridge, to send thewater east to a mill pond just above themine. Remnants of the pond can stillbe seen from the Bearcreek hill, thoughRoat remembers it covering most of thatflat land east of the creek when he wasa kid. Then when the water levels started torise, the tie hackers would head backupstream to roll the year’s worth of cuttimber into the creek for a few weeks ofwhat must have looked like mayhem. The local history book Red Lodge: Sagaof a Western Area recounts a story of oneyear when the dam broke and the timberwent down the main stream. “I can stillremember standing by the stream andwatching the timber float down thecreek. They spent most of that summergathering the timber and hauling it backto the mine,” one of the local miners said.Remnants of a single tie-cutter cabincan also be seen on the second SilverRun Loop just where the trail crossesIngles Creek. A few more cabins can befound higher up Ingles Creek and on theNichols Creek trail. Both Silver Run Loops and the BasinLakes trails are now National RecreationTrails, in part to honor their historyin the area’s development. Enjoyexploring these popular areas, but do soresponsibly and safely; USFS regulationsdon’t allow camping in any of the cabins.WWW.REDLODGE.COM 3

DESTINATION RED LODGE | TRAILSor take. And the Morrison switchbacks, per some quick, back-of-the-envelopecalculations, are about a 25% grade. Andsome of them are only 500 feet long. And you’re on a 1200-foot dropoff.According to Mark Kary, member ofBillings’ Magic City 4Wheelers Club, going down the switchbacks rather thanup means “you end up poking your noseout over the precipice, especially if youhave to back up to make the turn. Goingup, you poke your butt over. That’spsychologically a huge difference.”The Magic City 4Wheelers Club has along history of taking care of the trail. As it happens, their first ride proved asunforgettable as any. “It was 1998, and afew of us had been talking about it, butmany had never been on it. So we droveout to the trailhead at the bottom andran into some Forest Service rangerswho were—right then—discussingwhether it was worth keeping the trailopen. It needed a lot of work; the watererosion on that hillside can be really bad,and they weren’t sure anyone was usingit. So Ed Melcher, our ConservationOfficer at the time, said ‘What do youneed?’ And he put together a grantwhere we received $24,000 to makethe trail sustainable. That summer, wespent practically every weekend upthere, putting in water bars and signage, clearing felled trees, and doing otherthings to try to keep water off the trail.”These days the Magic City club goes upevery summer with Shoshone Forest staffto open the trail. “It’s always fun, becausewe’re the only ones there. I try to impressupon people to walk off the trail, evena quarter of a mile. The views are justtremendous. There’s one big meadow, about 10-11 miles in, where if you walksouth you’ll get to a cliff and you can seethe Pryors, Heart Mountain, over theClarks Fork canyon you just came out of,all the way to Sunlight Basin. It alwaysgives me the chills to be there.”“It’s just a kick-in-the-pants kind ofadventure,” Mark says. “I’ve got an oldJeep, and every time I take it up there, something breaks. One year I broke aspring on the rear axle.” He says theyused everything they could find—including a block of wood—to hold thething together to finish out the trip. “Butit’s still just a blast. It’s my favorite ride.”The trail opens mid-July (after springrun-off) and closes with the earlysnowfall. It’s also open to bicycles andhorses as well as foot traffic, but pleasebe aware that the tundra is fragile.Tundra foliage is the biggest deterrentto erosion on the Plateau, and it’seasily destroyed by repeated footsteps.Recovery can take hundreds of years. Both the Magic City 4Wheelers Cluband Team Rubberhead’s Epic Ride crewwelcome anyone who wants to join themin their trips this summer. Check out theMagic City club’s website at www.mc4w.com or call 446-3199 for Jerrett Millerfor more details on how to make thissummer in Red Lodge literally the Best.Thing. TRAILS | DESTINATION RED LODGEBeartooth HighwayDubbed “the most beautiful roadwayin America” by On the Roadcorrespondent Charles Kuralt, theBeartooth Highway climbs to anastounding 10,947 feet above sealevel. As it winds its way from RedLodge to Yellowstone National Park, the Highway traverses an impressiverange of ecosystems—from lush lodgepole pine forests to alpine tundra. Atthe highway’s summit, travelers findthemselves in a sky-high world ofglacial cirques, clear alpine lakes, andsnow that lingers through the summermonths. In late June and July, the fragiletundra blossoms in a lavish display ofwildflowers – shooting stars, columbine, and Indian paintbrush, to name a few. With 20 peaks over 12,000 feet inelevation (including Granite Peak,Montana’s highest at 12,799 feet), theBeartooth Mountains lie within the943,377-acre Absaroka-BeartoothWilderness. Grizzly and black bearsmake their home here, as do elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountaingoats, mountain lions and bobcats. Withover 950 alpine lakes and hundreds ofmiles of trails, these mountains offerample opportunities for recreation—much of it accessible from theBeartooth Highway.During the early Summer months, theBeartooth Highway is your ‘chair lift’to acres of lift access and backcountryskiing. At an elevation of 10,900 feet thearea offers 3,000 vertical feet of shuttledaccess to huge headwalls, chutes, steeps, cliffs, gullies and cornice jumps.Plan on at least three hours driving timeto make the trip between Yellowstoneand Red Lodge—more if you reallywant to experience the beauty of theAbsaroka-Beartooth Range. CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT | DESTINATION RED LODGEHistoryThere are a lot of legendsfrom the past that need simply to betaken for granted and not scrutinizedtoo closely. The legend of John “LiverEatin’” Johnston is a goodexample. Here’s a guywho reportedly earnedhis nickname bycarving out andeating the livers ofmen who harmedhim. Amonghis many frontierexploits, he servedas the Red Lodgedeputy sheriff for aperiod of time justbefore the turn of thecentury. The sheriff’sgig was probablyeasy compared to allthat carving and eating – only his closefriends knew for sure. Still, he gets a nodfor originality and his log cabin nowstands next to the Red Lodge Visitor’sCenter on the north end of town.By the way, how did the town of RedLodge get its name? One theory stemsfrom the fact that Crow Indians usedthis part of the country as a summercamp. They came to worship, rest andhunt – apparently living in lodgesthat were colored red. For the othercouple of theories and some accurateinformation, visit the Carbon CountyStep into the past…Red Lodge’s Historic Walking TourHistorical Museum – convenientlylocated on Broadway and staffed bypeople who have read their historybooks. We know that Red Lodge was officiallyestablished in 1884. Shortly after, in1887, the Rocky Fork Coal Companyopened the area’s first (coal) mine.Finding work wasn’t easy in the late1800’s, so European immigrants movedFor those of you wanting to explore Red Lodge’s historically richneighborhoods up close, a self-guided walking tour is available thanks to the CarbonCounty Historical Society. The tour will take you to the site of the Sundance Kid’s 1897bank robbery. It will teach you about the town’s mining boom and the bootlegging heydaythat followed the bust. It will guide you to the Victorian “castles” of the Hi Bug district andto the once glorious Theatorium decorated with marble statues imported from Italy. Withneighborhoods dubbed “Little Italy” and “Finn Town,” and many buildings on the National HistoricRegister, Red Lodge is a fascinating place to explore. For a copy of the walking tour contact the Carbon County Historical Museum at 406-446-3667.Or, download a copy online at www.redlodge.com/tours.40 FACEBOOK.COM/REDLODGE TWITTER.COM/REDLODGEMONTANA

A widevariety of Red Lodge historical booksare also available at the museum, inmany stores throughout Red Lodge andonline at the museum’s websitewww.carboncountyhistory.comhere by the hundreds. Finns, Scots,Irish, Italians, Slavs and a few othernationalities settled in to a frontier wayof life. They brought civilization andcommon sense to an otherwisebleak landscape. Red Lodgeentered a period of economicwealth and questionablebehavior, boasting as manyas 20 saloons when populationnumbers peaked. All that money was bound to attractsome interest, so in 1897, members ofthe outlaw band the Wild Bunch rolledinto town bragging about how theywere going to rob one of the banks.Local lawmen got wind of theirplans, though, and ran themout of town before they sawa penny. Not that this wasanything new to some ofthe characters listed on thehotel’s historic guest register– Buffalo Bill Cody andMany good things come to an end atsome point, and so did the coal miningboom. The West Side Mine closedin 1924, followed by more closuresduring the Great Depression. Finallyan underground explosion at the SmithMine near Bearcreek killed 74 men in1943 and the era was over.Showing their entrepreneurial spirit, the local citizenry responded tocircumstances created by Prohibitionand developed their own brand ofbootleg liquor. Known as “coughsyrup,” the concoction replaced coalas the town’s economic mainstay, supplying “patients” from the Midwestto California.Just in time and at an appropriatejuncture, it became apparent that peoplewanted to come here to take a lookaround and have some fun. Tourism, recreation and ranching became thearea’s primary means of support, andthey still are today. The next chapter isup to you!WWW.REDLODGE.COM 41

To thisday, most of this land is used for beefproduction, on small family ranchesrun by descendants of the valleys’ firsthomesteaders in the 1910s and ‘20s.But it wasn’t agriculture that firstbrought white men to this high country. After gold was discovered in thegranite mountains around Cooke City, prospectors fanned out over this wholeterritory. Instead of gold, what theyfound in the Stillwater River valley wasChromite – a metal whose fortunes aretied to war, as it is critical in hardeningsteel for munitions. The area’s first miningcompany started upin 1884, and withintwo years the townof Nye boomed tonearly 400 hardy soulssupported by a smelter, store, commisary, andsix saloons (the morecivilizing influences ofa church and schoolwould come later).Unfortunately for thetown of Nye, though, they were smack-dab inthe middle of Crow Reservation lands, and the mine was forced to close. By1889 this little boom town had seen itsfirst bust.© Sweet Medicine Guest RanchIt wouldn’t be long, though. In 1892,Crow lands were pushed east towardthe Bighorn River, which meant localminers were back in business. Becauseof things like limitations in miningtechnique and the mines’ high-countryremoteness (at the Benbow mineduring the ‘40s, a 3.5-mile aerial tramcarried ore down the mountainsideto the mill), the next 80 years saw thesame pattern of boom and bust. July’s annual NyeGoes Nuts celebration (check ourcalendar for dates) originated in 1939,when 1,400 neighbors and friendsgathered on a local ranch for a partythat included wrestling, clowns, snakecharmers, a picnic and fundraiser. Theevent is still a great way to take a peekinto how a vibrant ranching communitylets loose and shakes off the long winter.Once you’re in the neighborhood, youcan’t help but stop off in Fishtail. At one point,Cooke City was said to have as many asa thousand inhabitants. But what was the big draw? Themountains surrounding Cooke areexceptionally rich in mineral deposits:Stories of gold, silver, lead, copper andzinc drew adventurers from far and wideto this remote corner of Montana. Butshipping the ore was always a problem, often costing more than the value ofthe ore itself. Until the completion ofthe Beartooth Highway, the nearestrailhead was north of Gardiner,Montana which required travelthrough Yellowstone National Park.It was probably this talk of gold thatpiqued railroad financier Jay Cooke’sinterest in building a railroad to thearea. He pushed for a bill that wouldopen up access to the northern edgeof the Park, but Congress wouldn’tbudge. When that attempt failed,Cooke turned his attention towardmaking the proposed Red Lodge-Cooke City route a reality. Many of the silver mines went bustin the early ‘30s when silver valuesdropped, but several of the original goldmines remained in fitful productionthrough the 1990s.So when you’re booking your trip, plan afew extra days for Cooke City and SilverGate. Because year-round, they keep theWelcome Mat out for those of us in needof some high-country adventure.WWW.REDLODGE.COM 63
