DESTINATION RED LODGE | TRAILS© Creative Design WorksAnd then before high water hit, theybuilt a diversion dam in town, at abouttoday’s Bearcreek bridge, to send thewater east to a mill pond just above themine. Remnants of the pond can stillbe seen from the Bearcreek hill, thoughRoat remembers it covering most of thatflat land east of the creek when he wasa kid. Then when the water levels started torise, the tie hackers would head backupstream to roll the year’s worth of cuttimber into the creek for a few weeks ofwhat must have looked like mayhem. The local history book Red Lodge: Sagaof a Western Area recounts a story of oneyear when the dam broke and the timberwent down the main stream. “I can stillremember standing by the stream andwatching the timber float down thecreek. They spent most of that summergathering the timber and hauling it backto the mine,” one of the local miners said.Remnants of a single tie-cutter cabincan also be seen on the second SilverRun Loop just where the trail crossesIngles Creek. A few more cabins can befound higher up Ingles Creek and on theNichols Creek trail. Both Silver Run Loops and the BasinLakes trails are now National RecreationTrails, in part to honor their historyin the area’s development. Enjoyexploring these popular areas, but do soresponsibly and safely; USFS regulationsdon’t allow camping in any of the cabins.WWW.REDLODGE.COM 3
