2006 Community Benefit ReportSTRENGTHENING OUR PARTNERSHIPSwww.lmccf.org 1

THE POWER OF PHILANTHROPYStrengthening ourPARTNERSHIPSDEAR FRIENDS OF LMC COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONThe year 2006 provided a great sense of achievement forthe Foundation. Through the strength of our communityties we have been able to combine our efforts with so manyothers. The completion of the Collier Hospice Center realizeda 20-year dream, the expansion of our Nonprofit PreservationInitiative built 12 new partnerships with local nonprofits, andour grantmaking was highlighted by an Economic Impact Studythat analyzes how nonprofits affect Colorado’s economy. The completion of the $7.5 million Collier Hospice Center wasthe pinnacle event for the Foundation in 2006. Twenty yearsago, end-of-life care was barely known in the U.S. LMC CommunityFoundation and Exempla Healthcare began to envision a worldclassend-of-life care facility that could accommodate the specialneeds of its patients. The long-dreamed-of Hospice opened topatient care on July 20, 2006; it highlighted a successfulcollaboration among the community, Exempla Lutheran MedicalCenter and the Foundation.A couple of years ago, we created a ground-breaking initiative calledNonprofit Preservation. Unlike other initiatives that support specificservices, Nonprofit Preservation was designed to support thelong-term future of nonprofit organizations. It is based on ourbelief in the importance of nonprofits in our community. Theinitiative is comprised of a variety of programs and services, suchas the Endowment Challenge Grants, Strengthening Partners Grants, mentoring, seminars, quarterly e-newsletters, and a web-basedgiving tool called GivingFirst (launched in May 2007).This past year, the Foundation continued its commitment toNonprofit Preservation by dedicating $1.35 million in matchingfunds for endowment-building. Twelve nonprofits rose to theFoundation’s second endowment challenge and began reachingout to their donors to support their long-term future. With theFoundation’s 50 cents per dollar match, millions of dollars willbe endowed for these 12 nonprofits by the end of the challengeperiod in late March 2008.Constantly monitoring the community’s philanthropic needs, attitudes, and behaviors, the Foundation partnered with theColorado Nonprofit Association and several local foundations tofund an Economic Impact Study that analyzes how nonprofitsaffect Colorado’s economy and the quality of life of its residents. The results will be used to help the general public understandthe significant value nonprofit organizations provide. We are proud that with a corpus of close to $54 million, theFoundation returned more than $6.8 million to the communitythrough initiatives, programs, and grantmaking in 2006 and grewits assets by more than $3 million. Each day we work with our partners, whether they are individualdonors, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, and/or our nonprofitpartners, to ensure that vital community services remain intactand flourish. As a community partner, our goal is to improve thehealth and well-being of metropolitan Denver residents. As we continue to grow, our commitment to our partners remainssteadfast. Our hope is that each person within our reach useshis or her personal Power of Philanthropy to make a significantimpact on the community’s well-being.Sincerely,Vernon Ritzman, M.D.Chair, Board of DirectorsKenneth W. Eggeman, Ph.D.President and CEOEach day we work with our partners to improve the health and well-beingof metropolitan Denver residents.www.lmccf.org 3

The Foundation coined theterm “nonprofit partner” to identify nonprofitorganizations that entrust the Foundationto manage their funds. Nearly 60 nonprofitorganizations in the metropolitan Denverarea are partners with the Foundation andenjoy the breadth of programs and servicesit offers.BUILDING ENDOWMENTSIn 2006, 12 nonprofit organizationsjoined the Foundation through its secondEndowment Challenge Grant program. The Foundation’s board of directorscommitted $1.35 million in matchingfunds for endowment-building. Collier Hospice Center:A Hope and Dream RealizedThe opening of the Collier Hospice Center in July 2006was not only the pinnacle event for the Foundation, but along-awaited community hope realized. The Foundation lead the $7.5 million capital campaign to buildthe 24-room, free standing Collier Hospice Center on the campusof Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. Designed to address specialend-of-life needs, the newHospice provides a peacefuland nurturing environmentfor its patients andtheir families during difficulttimes.Wendy Dietz (center), pictured with herfamily, donated $1 to the Hospice “InMemory of Grandma Great”.Since its inception in 1985,the Exempla LutheranHospice program has servedthousands of patients andtheir families thanks tostrong community support.Twenty years ago, end-oflifecare was barely knownin the U.S. LMC CommunityFoundation and ExemplaHealthcare began to envisiona world-class end-of-life care facility that could accommodate thevery special needs of its patients. With a successful collaborationamong the community, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center andthe Foundation, the construction of the Hospice began in April2005 and the facility opened for patient care in July 2006.The dedicated leadership at the Foundation spent 18 monthsraising the necessary funds to build the facility by holding specialevents, stewarding donors, and cultivating local business andfoundation support. The individual donations that built theHospice came from various donors, from eight-year-old WendyDietz who donated $1 in memory of her “Grandma Great,” tothe $1.5 million lead gift from philanthropists Bud and NancyCollier, for whom the Hospice is named.Referred to as “state of the art,” “beautiful and practical,” and “thenew standard for a hospice care facility,” the Hospice and itscare providers have received sweeping accolades from industryLead donors Bud and Nancy Collier look on as Collier Hospice Center isunveiled at the June 20, 2006 dedication celebration.critics and the community. Grant HighlightsThe Foundation has developed a network of nonprofits in metropolitan Denver to keep us intimatelyaware of the issues facing our community. In addition, our staff and board of directors maintain activeties with local leaders and organizations. These relationships enable us to develop initiatives that areproactive and strategically focused to address specific community needs. Monitoring trends, fundingstudies, and analyzing service gaps also lend to the Foundation’s ability to prioritize funding. In 2006, the Foundation partnered with, and financiallysupported, several metropolitan Denver nonprofitorganizations. Two innovative projects, one a study andthe other a pilot project, exemplify the Foundation’s commitmentto innovation and to the nonprofit community.Late last year, LMC Community Foundation partnered withthe Colorado Nonprofit Association and several local foundationsto fund an Economic Impact Study that analyzeshow nonprofits affect Colorado’s economy and the qualityof life of its residents.Nonprofits account for five percent of the Colorado economyand provide a high percentage of the state’s health andhuman services programs. When government funding is cut, nonprofits are there to pick up the slack. The Economic Impact Study is the first phase of the ColoradoNonprofit Association’s “Colorado Generosity Project.” Thestudy will establish a baseline of information from primaryresearch (e.g., interviews, focus groups, and surveys) andsecondary research (e.g., demographic information, and statisticsfrom local, state, and Federal government agencies)to be used as a road map for the larger Generosity Project(the Colorado Generosity Project aims to increase annualgiving in Colorado by $105 million). The Foundation willuse the data from the study to develop additional tools tosupport philanthropy, to build partnerships and to helpnonprofits prosper.Constantly searching for innovative ideas that improvecommunity well-being, the Foundation funded a pilotproject in 2006/2007 that helps older adults remain activeand involved in their communities.Older adults typically look to their doctors for help with avariety of personal needs. But often, these needs are notmedical, and the doctor is not the best resource for help.Personal needs may include transportation, personal careand simple health checks. With the number of olderadults expected to double in Colorado over the nextdecade, this challenge in non-medical care is growing. The pilot project placed a full-time trained care coordinatorfrom Seniors’ Resource Center at Wheat Ridge Internal Medicineto provide assessments, handle non-medical calls andarrange services such as home visits, meals, transportation, personal care and health checks. The goal of the project isto reduce the non-medical congestion in physicians’ officesoften created by isolated seniors. The results have been encouraging. Those receiving communityservices arranged by the care coordinator have reported lessisolation and better overall health. Additionally, the doctor’soffice staff has experienced a reduction in non-medicalinquires, allowing them to focus on pressing medical issues.Foundation Works TowardsHealthy CommunitiesAlthough Denver has a reputation for health and fitness, issues of overweight and obesity are climbing at alarmingrates. “[Our] waistlines are expanding at the samerate or faster than the rest of the nation,” says Colorado’sLt. Governor Barbara O’Brien. “That means 55 percent ofmetro Denver adults are overweight or obese.”To help reverse this trend, LMC Community Foundationmade a grant to the Metro Denver Health & WellnessCommission—a group drafting a strategic plan to ensurethat Denver is “America’s Healthiest Community.” Thecommission is comprised of close to 80 healthcare, government and business leaders.LMC Community Foundation’s grant helped to supportthe commission’s first year of operations and its goal todraft a strategic plan to make Denver the nation’s leaderfor healthy lifestyles. Key initiatives of the plan addressobesity in schools, work places and communities.www.lmccf.org 7
