Operation Christmas Child is the UK's largest children's Christmas appeal and has been running for over 19 years. Thanks to a
huge army of volunteers who give their time to help make this Christmas 'miracle' come to life, Samaritan’s Purse are able to
deliver gift-filled shoeboxes to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They work with local churches and charities
overseas to ensure that your shoebox gets delivered by hand to children who need it most.
This year the campaign was launched school wide by Grace Dalton in Yr13, who went into assemblies to talk about the cause
and encourage her peers to donate gifts to the worthy cause. Her presentation obviously moved many of you as we ended up
with a whopping 50+ boxes, all wrapped in festive paper and full of lovely gifts that will bring so much joy to children who
otherwise may not receive any gifts this Christmas.
Below are the names of all those who kindly donated gifts, boxes and in some cases, multiples of both. You’re generosity is to
be commended and as a thank you, everyone who donated has received positive points. 7Y were the lucky winners of a tin of
chocolates to share for being the most generous form with over 7 boxes between them. Yosra Elhamamy 10T also won the
prize for most generous individual donating 7 boxes of goodies!
Puzzle Challenge Day
October saw the return of the Year 11
Puzzle Challenge Day, organised by the Happy
Puzzle Company (www.happypuzzle.co.uk).
Spilt into teams, students had to exercise
their problem solving skills to tackle some
tricky puzzles ranging from road maps to
getting penguins balanced on a wobbly
iceberg. Thanks to Mr Palfreyman who
organised this successful event, and to the
students who took part so enthusiastically.
Gifted and Talented
The Maths Department is looking forward to
the launch of their Gifted and Talented
Maths workshops that will be starting next
half term, involving around 60 of our Year 7
students. This project, in collaboration
with the Kings College London, will be an
opportunity to explore connections in Maths,
outside of the usual curriculum. One
workshop will take place each half term.
Maths In Action
A group of 30 Year 12 students will be
heading to central London for a day of
lectures from leading Mathematicians
everything on Monday 23rd November.
They’ll be joining hundreds of other Sixth
Formers for the popular event which takes
place at the Institute of Education.

WELLS Well,
Enterprise
Day Report
Wells kicked off the series of Enterprise
days leading up to Christmas with a
frenzie of break and lunchtime food sales,
pinching custom from the canteen, but all
for a good cause.
Masterminding the venture was House
captain Maurice Morgan, who networked
with his team of 12 year contemporaries
to organise and advertise the day’s events.
Careful decisions were taken to decide
what to do and after undertaking some
research, getting teachers to shine
pupils’ shoes was one idea Maurice firmly
rejected; “Sir, there’s just no market for
it”. Alas, that was fairly accurate, but at
20p a go, Mr Pilling and I shined to make
a useful £9.
Year 8 Enterprise rep, Mickey
Wiwathanopas, and his team, sold two
hundred hot dogs using a production line
that Economist Adam Smith would have
been proud of, and year 7’s Rachel Sarson
and helpers handled the accounting with
impressive efficiency. Together with
sweets and chocolate (but sadly no
churros!) sales, total profit stood at £172.
Many thanks to all that helped out.
Mr Bradley and Ms Revie
News from the RE Department
what a jam packed term we are having here at Twyford, especially in the RE
department! First of all it is Happy Interfaith week. Interfaith week is new this year
and is a celebration to strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels. It is also to
increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK and
to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious belief.
To celebrate, the RE department have been out on several trips. Mr Cahill took the
Year 7 G&T group to the West London Synagogue where they were able to do lots
of fun and exciting things and especially enjoyed looking at the many wonderful artefacts.
Just check out the pictures;
Ms Turner took the lovely year 8 G&T group to the Gurdwara in Southall where they
even got to try the lovely food in the Langer!
Our Year 10 G&T group were also extremely lucky to visit the Jewish Film Festival
where they watched a film about Israel and Palestine inter relations and met the
director afterwards for a Question and Answering session!
We have also held an open door policy in RE1 and RE2 to allow any students the
opportunity to come and exchange dialogue with peers of all different faiths.
It has been a fantastic week and I would like to thank everyone for their sublime
contribution and participation.
Previous to Interfaith week, the Year 12/13 students (on occasional day-that’s
commitment guys) came to the screening of ‘The Human Experience’ in Leicester Square
where they met the male leads and also had the opportunity to attend a question and
answering session along with Cherie Blair! It was a great night and the students were
fantastic - well done to you all. I would also like to thank Ms Hinckley, Mr Loveless,
Ms Linsell and Ms Clark for attending the film as well.
Poetry By Nicholas Lloyd 8T and Katy Debois 8T
Do you know where your money goes?
From fair-trade bananas to fair trade clothes
Do you know how much the workers are paid?
For all the things they have picked and made
Do you know where they go home at night,
A shack made of wood that has no light
But look that’s a bright and shiny light
oh it’s the people from fair-trade who are fair and right.
IMPORTANT REMINDER!
Compulsory revision for those chosen to attend is on Wednesday’s in RE1 for FRDC,
week 1 and TWY in week 2. The open revision classes will also begin each night in
RE1 during the first week of December to prepare you for your MOCKs!!!!!!!

Please do feel free to talk to your year reps as they are always keen to hear your ideas and bring them to the council to see if we can
implement them. The next big issues we will be looking at include litter, the café and of course the toilets! So, watch this space
to see the next round of exciting improvements the School Council has implemented around your school.
Miss Clark
School Council Coordinator
School Council News
It’s been a very busy time for the school council
since returning in September and the new batch
of form and year council reps have certainly
earned their badges. We have been tackling the
major issue of Chicken Cottage opening outside
the school, as well as starting to get to grips with
bullying, litter and the play areas, and all after
only half a term back! The first whole school
meeting took place on 5 th October (with year
council meetings occurring either side) and the
students got straight to the heart of the issues.
Actions completed so far include: The basketball
hoop, more table tennis tables on order (so there
will be one per year group 7-11), designated
areas for various size sports balls, an assembly
programme delivered by students about Chicken
Cottage and a petition to restrict the opening
hours of the shop signed by hundreds of
students. The next meeting will have taken place
by the time this goes to print, but remember if
you want to get your point heard then let your
form/year rep know so that they bring it up for
you in the next meeting.
A big Well Done to all those who got elected this
year to represent their class as form rep, it’s a
really important job and I’ve been pleased to see
you taking the roles seriously and representing
your forms excellently, both in meetings and by
conducting yourselves as role models. Hopefully
you should all be aware of who your form reps
are, but you may not be so sure about your year
reps, so here is a list of the students who were
elected to represent their year groups:

Attention ! Year 8
There are a few places left on all 3 residential trips to France,
Germany and Spain. All three trips are now offered to anyone
whatever language they are currently learning.
See the Modern Language Department urgently if interested.
EARLY UCAS APPLICATIONS
This year another group of students
put themselves forward for Early
UCAS Applications. These are
University applications for any
course at Oxford and Cambridge
or any institution for Medicine,
Dentistry or Veterinary Science.
Early UCAS Applications are highly
competitive and therefore take
considerable time and effort.
This year students have attended
Open Days at Oxford and
Cambridge (including an overnight
stay in Oxford where Dr Evans
managed to get them locked in a
field), spent many hours editing
re-drafts of personal statements,
attending extra timetabled
sessions with Miss Hinckley on
writing personal statements and
interview training, had extra
tuition from subject tutors in
preparation for extra exams
(mostly sat at the start of
November), endured mock
interviews faced by panels
consisting of Senior Management,
subject specialists and often also
with external panellists from
Universities, and attended a
workshop given by the Head of
Admissions at Oxford.
All of this has combined to
produce some of the best
applications I have seen, so
we wish them well in their final
hurdle – the interviews (mostly
in the first week of December).
Many thanks are due to all the
staff who have written references,
given up their time for extra
tuition and sat on interview
panels. We would especially like
to thank the parents who gave
up their evenings to join the mock
interview panels – it is incredibly
useful for our students to
experience unfamiliar faces in
mock interviews. They might not
have enjoyed it at the time, but
they are much better prepared
as a result!
Support Your House!
Here are the dates for the House enterprise days so get
your House date in your diary and don’t forget to bring
in some extra cash that day to support the events. The
enterprise team for each house put massive amounts of
effort into making these days fun for everyone, plus it’s
a great opportunity to raise some money for some really
worthy causes. So GET INVOLVED and be part of the
Twyford Community by supporting these brilliant house
events. A big thank you to Mr Bradley and Miss Revie
who worked closely with a team of Wells students to
produce a great Wells enterprise day to kick off the
house events on the 6 th November.
Calligraphy is coming to Twyford!
Pen, Paper, Ink, Quills and Thrills.
The South London Lettering Association
(SLLA) will be holding their first workshop
at Twyford C of E High School on the 5th
December. The spacious and bright art
classroom, which the SLLA members will
be using, courtesy of Miss Hemmens and
Mr McKee, is ideal for teaching calligraphy.
But who are we?
We are a group of amateur and
professional lettering artists of all abilities
with one great passion, Letters and
Words, in any shape or form ranging from
formal calligraphy to the expressive use
of signs in pictures. As an association we
promote and encourage lettering in all
forms, organizing exciting workshops
on lettering and calligraphy, exploring
different tools and techniques. We hold
monthly lectures and social evenings
on lettering-related subjects, with
recognized experts offering insights into
Saracens v South Africa
at Wembley Stadium
an otherwise little-known world. Over
the years the SLLA has also organized
numerous exhibitions, demonstrations
at public events, and visits to places
of calligraphic interest. Membership is
open to anyone with an interest in fine
handwriting, calligraphy and the lettering
arts, regardless of experience or ability.
COMING SOON we are offering a free
beginners taster session exclusively for
Twyford students/Parents/staff on a future
Saturday (date to be confirmed). If any
students/Parents/staff wish to take part
and have a glimpse at this intriguing and
much admired craft, please contact
Michela Antonello via e-mail
m.antonello@btinternet.com or call 020
8896 2882. For more information on the
SLLA and more calligraphy examples, visit
our website www.slla.co.uk, where some
of our members display their stunning
work in the artists’ gallery.
Some of our students and
staff got the opportunity to
go to Wembley Stadium this
week, to watch Saracens v
South Africa in the Rugby.
It was a brilliant game, with
Saracens beating the World
Champions 24-23.
A great time was had by all,
and the talented players on
both the Saracens and South
Africa teams truly were an
inspiration to our own rugby
teams at Twyford.

Year 11 News
Things are starting to slow down now,
everybody is settling into a routine, knowing
how to manage the workload that we now
expect this year. Well, not really. Suddenly we
are bombarded by new choices that we need
to make. Can you guess? 6 th form. Recently,
teachers have been popping into our various
lessons to pitch their subject to us. 6 th form
open evening, especially, was exciting.
Everybody was eagerly anticipating a brief
glimpse of the potential newbies of next year,
if they were nice, and what sort of competition
they might be. We want some fresh faces
around here. For some, the open evening really
put our choices into perspective. We realised
that we have to work as hard as we can in
order to get into the group we want, and
consequently, a good university, and/or the
best chances of a job.
D OF E
If you see students dragging around massive
camping bags, don’t misunderstand, it’s for our
D of E bronze award trip. I’m sure most of you
already know what this is, but just in case; D of
E gives people the chance to develop their skills
outside the school or family environment.
Many Year 11s have spent recent weekends
trudging through the mud and the rain, veering
(sometimes for miles) off course, all to achieve
a prestigious award. Not only is it fun, it also
looks really good on your CV, which is getting
increasingly important for us. At least during
the real assessment weekend, people didn’t
get sunburnt like they did on the practice
round!
NEW RULES
The school has once again introduced the one
way staircase policy. Twyford is constantly
being improved. In Year 7 we were all choked
by the dust of Mudge block rising. Then the old
cafeteria was discarded, and A block extended.
Do you remember when we used to have
vending machines? The new cafeteria is
awesome with its stage, pretty artworks (check
out the mural I did!) everywhere, and loads of
seating space. Thank you! Unfortunately for
most, there is a queue to get in but for us there
isn’t... as we can walk straight through.
Most recently though, the back playground has
melted into parking spaces for teachers, and
the former car park plays host to cricket
teams, pat ball players and the ever popular
table tennis. I’ve never seen those tables
empty so kudos to whoever thought of that!
New uniform rules have continued to raise the
standard of our appearance. (and girls, don’t
panic if you’re stuck, Mrs Lloyd can direct you
to an outlet selling ‘school safe’ skirts.)
CHICKEN COTTAGE
Are you one of those people who sprints across
the cage with your bags above your head,
hoping to avoid any missiles from the ominous
circling sea gulls above? It’s simple guys, the
sea gulls like litter and the bins are there for
a reason. Unfortunately for Ms Hudson, the
‘’bird vermin’’ perched smugly outside our
school is not so easily binned. Even though it
isn’t open yet, teachers have been spotted
hovering around the doors of the unwelcome
chicken cottage. It will be interesting to see
how students react once it isn’t just a shiny
sign outside our gates. Will we be able to resist
the alluring scents of greasy, fat fried chicken?
Well, you don’t have a choice. If you are
wearing school uniform, Chicken Cottage is off
limits to Twyford pupils between certain hours.
Acton high kids will be laughing their socks off
at us. But just think- when they start to wobble
it will be us laughing.
FOR YEAR 11s ONLY
Keep up the good work! It’s really hard with all
the pressures looming down on us, what with
mocks and 6 th form choices coming up, and
managing the studying and socialising parts of
our lives is never easy. Unfortunately for some,
others balancing their workload means that
they have to work harder, and many year 11s
have decided that they are struggling with
extra-curricular activities. Prefects are
continuing to do a great job and there are a
few places available – something that will look
great on any 6 th form / college application. So if
you have any spare time then ask Mr Science
Smith for an application form.
Thank you for reading!
Mariko Chadwick 11T.

Congratulations
‘Ealing's Got Talent’ competition.
Her exceptional singing talent won over the judges,
and we here at Twyford are very proud of her.
She astonished audience members and judges
with her beautiful rendition of Hallelujah by
Leonard Cohen.
Louise said: "I'm so happy to have won the
competition. I was so surprised when they called
Times Teaser
This month’s ‘puzzle’ involves problem-solving but also artistic ability!
The 4 by 4 grid below is shaded in such a way that if you rotate it
through 180 degrees you obtain the same pattern except that black
squares have become white squares and vice versa.
This month’s task is to use a 6 x 6
grid and create the best looking
design that also obeys the rule
that it looks the same upside
down apart from the black and
white squares swapping over.
(If there are a lot of entries,
I will ask the Art Dept for their
opinion!)
The winner this month, as ever, will win a puzzle book,
but your entry must be submitted to me, Mr. Palfreyman,
by Friday 27 th November.
