TarraWarra Museum of ArtAnnual Report 2010/2011STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCEThe TarraWarra Museum of Art Limitedwas established as a company limitedby guarantee in October 2000. It isthe first privately funded, significantpublic visual arts museum to be set upunder the Australian Government’sphilanthropic measures announced inMarch 1999. TWMA operates as a notfor-profitinstitution, with a charter todisplay Australian art from the secondhalf of the twentieth century to thepresent day. The museum was launchedby the Prime Minister, The HonourableJohn Howard in April 2002.Eva and Marc Besen had long dreamtof sharing their inexhaustible passionfor Australian art with the people ofAustralia and beyond. In 1999, the firststeps were taken to make this dream areality, with the formulation of a visionfor a new museum in the Yarra Valley, with its own collection of Australian artchosen from their private collection thathad been lovingly assembled over theprevious fifty years. In 2000, an architectural competitionwas conducted with five of Melbourne’smost outstanding architects invited topresent design schemes for the museum.Allan Powell’s design for this elegantbuilding, arcing gently from the earthin concert with the contours and huesof the landscape, was chosen. With itshull resting permanently at TarraWarra, this vessel provides a worthy additionto recent Australian architecturalaccomplishments within the public artssector, and an inspiring environmentwithin which to view modern andcontemporary art. This new museum builtby Probuild Constructions was openedby the Victorian Premier, The HonourableSteve Bracks, in December 2003.To date, the TarraWarra Museum ofArt collection comprises Australianworks of art from the early 1950s to thepresent day, the same period duringwhich Marc and Eva Besen havecollected art. It highlights artists whosework has come to prominence fromthe 1950s onwards; artists who haveshaped the development of modernart in Australia. The collection exploresthe development of contemporaryart, highlighting differences, styles andmovements, attempting to demonstratethat which distinguishes Australianmodernism. While containing examplesof internationally informed art, the TWMAcollection demonstrates a coherent anduniquely Australian character, stronglyfounded in this nation’s interior andexterior world. This collection also retainsan intimate character reminiscent of,and derived from its origins as a privatecollection. The museum’s AcquisitionPolicy centres on the consolidation ofthe obvious strengths of the collectionthrough the acquisition of works from the1950s onwards. In addition, exceptionalworks by artists working from 1950 to thepresent day are assessed both on theirindividual merit and on their potentialto extend upon the strengths of thecollection. Using the same method ofassessment, contemporary works, as wellas works by precursors to the 1950s areacquired where appropriate.Indigenous art has not been initiallyincluded in depth but in order for thecollection to represent contemporaryAustralian practice the acquisition policyhas been broadened to includedindigenous art and in particularurban indigenous art in the context ofAustralian contemporary art. While theinitial collection donated by Eva andMarc Besen focused upon painting, therange of media has expanded to furtherdevelop the collection. TarraWarraMuseum of Art has a commitmentto making a selection of this uniquecollection available for the publicto view throughout the year. Duringeach annual programme, temporaryexhibitions focusing either on particularfacets of the collection, or using thecollection as impetus for an examinationof a wider selection of art are exhibitedtogether with contemporary installationsand themed exhibitions. This realisationof Eva and Marc Besen’s vision in theirgift to the public, provides a retreatfrom the city and an opportunity toexperience three of their enduringpassions, Australian modern art, architecture and the landscape of thebeautiful Yarra Valley.Maudie Palmer AODirector2

During the 2010/2011 financialyear the seven original exhibitions held in the museum provided a uniqueperspective on how we view art today.
