Fund Raising at <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>This term <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> has raised £1,998 for charity. This totals £35,944 since westarting counting in September 2008! Here are some of this terms highlights;Duke of EdinburghCongratulations to this year’s Silver Duke of Edinburghstudents who have raised £956 (and still counting) fortheir Duke of Edinburgh fund this summer and this term.The money will go towards new equipment for theirexpeditions.They have also decided to donate some of this money tothe Marie Curie charity. You can read more about this onpage 8-9. Well done girls!Sixth FormSixth form students have raised £259.82 for the followingcharities this term; AfterMath Support (road safety) TheBasement, a homeless advisory centre in Liverpool andfor Zoe’s place. Read more on page 14.Breast CancerThank you for all the effort/contributions that were madeon the last Thursday of half-term. So far we have raised£412.79 for a Breast Cancer charity – a fantastic sum!Children in NeedWell done to Morgan Goulding who helped to raise over£300 for Children in Need by helping to make cakes withher younger brother Gary who attends Lemington Primaryschool.Bag for SchoolThank you to all of you for your donations this term for Bagfor Schools. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!“Cinderella” ran over two nights to anaudience of over 400 people. The reactionfrom the audience was overwhelming andnothing like we could ever have imagined.It was fantastic to have everyone supportingus and encouraging us to do our very best.Audience members came from far and wideand visitors who’d never been to <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>before commented “It was a fantastic night”and “It was the funniest thing Ihave ever seen…I’m still laughingnow” which is an incredible reaction.It was humbling to see cast and crew working together to puton this show. Students involved were extremely efficient withtheir entrances; promptly getting from their dressing room to theentrances they needed to be at! Even when the show had started,the cast helped each other with final line rehearsals and it wassuch a proud moment for Mr. Maloney to witness.I am flabbergasted by the reaction to “Cinderella” and I amextremely proud of what the amazing cast and crew have achievedsince September. It has been an incredible journey for all involvedand I would like to thank everyone, from students and staff, to theaudience, for making this such an amazing experience.Mr MaloneyArt Students Become Graphic DesignersCongratulations to the following art students who designed the amazingposters for the Christmas production of Cinderella. CONGRATULATIONS TO LIVERPOOL’SNEW YOUNG LORD MAYORThis term I had the privilege oftaking a group of our students tothe Town Hall. Six of them stood tobe elected for Liverpool’s YoungLord Mayor, they had to do a twominute speech in front of 100Liverpool students.All students were fantastic, theyspoke eloquently, with confidenceand all managed to put a bit of <strong>Holly</strong><strong>Lodge</strong> humour in their speeches.They spoke of how proud theywere to be at <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> and to befrom Liverpool, it brought a littletear to my eye!!The girls were:Jennifer Heffron 7TM (one of only2 year 7’s to do a speech)Jayne Massey 9SRE, AbigailWhiteside 9KT, Lucy Highton 9HL,Chloe Shelbourne 9AMK and Stevie-Lea Cubbon-Sancto 8LF.The organisers of the event were particular impressed with <strong>Holly</strong><strong>Lodge</strong>.I am pleased to announce Jayne Massey has been elected as one of11 to be this year’s Young Lord Mayor. This means for one month ofthis year Jayne will get to escort the Lord Mayor on his Civic duties.She even gets to wear her own gold chain. Fantastic opportunity forJayne and great publicity for the school.Rachel PowellSCHOOL COUNCILAs always the School Council have been very busythis term, attending lots of Schools’ Parliamentmeetings and 8 of them stood for election asYoung Lord Mayor and Jayne Massey got elected.The School Councilalso had a visit fromReverend PhilippaWetherell from WestDerby Church to speakto the students abouthow the Church can helpwith any issues in schoolor if there were activitiesthe students would liketo get involved in at theChurch.The School Councilhave also organisedthe Christmas Mealfor the elderly as theyfelt they wanted togive something backto the local communityespecially in these hardeconomic times. HOLLY LODGESPECIAL VISITORIn September <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> had a very specialvisitor; Mr Lawrence Cooke came to the school.Lawrence Cooke came all the way from Californiato visit the school because his Great Grandfatherbuilt the <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> Building, Fremont and 2 otherbuildings which used to make up the grounds. HisGreat Grandfather was Isaac Cooke.The Friends of<strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>Notice BoardThis term Friends of <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> have beenvery busy planning lots of fundraisingactivities. These have included a schoolBINGO, raffles and making refreshmentsfor the Christmas School Play. This termwe have funded many trips and activitiesthroughout the school and funded somenew equipment for the hall to help with theChristmas play.With the help of the School Council we arealso organising a Christmas Meal for theelderly, serving up a feast for 90 elderlypeople in the local community.Staff and students at the schoolhave generously donateditems for Christmas hampersfor the guests as well.Our next meeting is onWednesday 1st Februaryat 5.30pm in the JollyMiller, all are welcome.FORMER PUPILSHARES HERMEMORIES OFHOLLY LODGEHello, I have only recently goneon the Internet and it was greatlooking up my old school which Iattended between 1951 and 1956,I can honestly say I was proud tobe sent there after passing the 11+scholarship, I started off at Sandheysand loved feeding the ducks on theway to the main school. I attendedsewing lessons at Uplands wherethe headmistress, Miss Drummondresided. We were all very proudwhen we scored points for our“houses”, I was in Challenger. Iremember scoring points for agood Coronation scrapbook. WhenI first started there I had to have abag for outdoor shoes and my Dadembroidered the school logo on thebag. My first job was at a dentist’sin West Derby and he always triedto employ girls from <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> asit had such a good reputation. Iemigrated to Melbourne, Australiain 1963 with my husband (who wasa technician at the dentist’s) andmy 2 boys. I now live in Wynyard,a small coastal town in Tasmaniawith my little dog Tess, sadly Irecently lost my 2nd husband andoften look back and wonder if anyof my school friends ended up here.My name was Ruth King when Iattended <strong>Holly</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>, anywayI hope the present students willappreciate their time there as muchas I did.Greetings from Down under,Ruth James13


SIXTH FORM NEWS‘PRE-DRIVER’ ROADSAFETY AWARENESSOn Wednesday 9th November 30 Year 12 students took partin a ‘Pre-Driver’ road safety awareness course as part of theirPSHE programme. As well as attending talks on reducingrisks as a driver and a passenger the students each had thechance to drive a car…with differing levels of success (LoisBacon-Jones was advised by her instructor to invest in a buspass!). Several students were also interviewed for a film onroad safety during the session; the film is to be premiered atFACT in Liverpool!FUNDRAISING & CHARITYSixth form students havebeen busy raising moneyfor charity this term; wehave donated £60.00to AfterMath Support(road safety) as part oftheir pre-driver courseand the student councilraised £151.82 for ‘TheBasement’, a homelessadvisory centre inLiverpool.Well done to all of thosestudents who have taken aleading role in organisingevents, particularlyChelsea Blundell-Nelsonwho raised £48.00 forZoe’s place by doing asponsored dotty nail paintevent in the sixth formcommon room!Class of <strong>2011</strong> SuccessDespite the intense competition for university placesthis year as students across the country scrambledfor places ahead of the planned tuition fee rise, <strong>Holly</strong><strong>Lodge</strong> sixth form students bucked the trend andsecured fantastic places at prestigious institutionsright across the country, as well as achieving fantasticAS and A2 results.
