Section Cutting and Mounting in a Plant MaterialEach student must provide himself with a dissecting set including: Sharp flat ground razor Needles or tooth pick (as an aid) Forceps or tweezers Clean and dry glass slides Cover slips‣ For cutting a section, hold the razor horizontally between the fingers of yourright hand and the material is held vertically between the fingers and thumbof the left hand. The material and razor should be flooded with water; themovement of the razor should be a sweeping one towards the left arm.‣ A number of sections have to be made in order to make a choice of the best. The razor should be dried and stropped immediately after use.‣ The section or the material to be examined is transferred to a drop of wateror glycerin at the center of a clean glass slide.‣ Add a drop of water at center of the slide and add your specimen inside it.‣ Then, place your cover slip near one edge of the water drop and slowly slidethe cover slip up in an inclined position being supported by a needle. Bylowering the needle gradually, the cover is gently lowered till touch thewater drop and comes to rest on surface of the slide. In this way air bubblesare avoided. If water run the edges, the slide is plotted with a soft piece ofpaper towel to remove the excess water.9
