ONEMANAGING ANIMAL WELFARE IN TOURISMONEMANAGING ANIMAL WELFARE IN TOURISM2SECTION 1Managing animal welfarein tourismWhere activities are offered for customers to view or interact with animals intourism destinations, they are often amongst the most popular with customers.In 2003, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) conducted a survey in theUK of the ‘Top 20 things to do before you die’. Swimming with dolphins wasthe number one ranked activity in the survey. Put simply, animal attractionshave become very significant in the tourism experience.3Tourism can undoubtedly be a force for positivechange across the globe and animal attractionslinked to tourism have the potential to offerauthentic experiences that enhance the appealof destinations. Aside from the enjoymentfactor for tourists, these attractions often playa vital role in improving education aroundbiodiversity, enhancing species protection andin aiding conservation. They are also a majorcontributor to economies and employmentopportunities around the world.As the number of activities involvinganimals in tourism has grown, so too has theunderstanding of the animals involved andthe potential impacts of interaction betweentourists and animals. It is clear that animalattractions require a carefully managedapproach to achieve best practice.Lion housed in a small, cramped cage with no enrichment.INDUSTRY CASE STUDYThe rise of online media hasheightened the risk of reputationaldamage in relation to animal welfareconcerns. In 2010, a campaign onFacebook was launched about a new‘swim with dolphins’ attraction inHisaronu, Turkey.To date, this campaign hasattracted more than 20,000followers.
