31WELCOME TO OSOYOOS 2013 Official <strong>Visitor</strong>’s <strong>Guide</strong>Pioneer Walkway & Cottonwood Park:The first of <strong>the</strong>se two public lake shore parks is along MainStreet, <strong>the</strong> second on Cottonwood Drive. Beautiful gardenschange with <strong>the</strong> seasons. Easy short strolls with benches,picnic tables, public washrooms. Wheelchair accessible.Lakeshore Drive Pathway:This paved pathway starts at <strong>the</strong> public beach access where <strong>the</strong>road makes a sharp left turn, <strong>the</strong>n runs parallel to <strong>the</strong> roadwayand next to <strong>the</strong> waterfront. This is an easy family biking routefor those staying in RV campgrounds along Lakeshore Drive.Irrigation Canal Walkway:This popular 12 kilometer round trip trail is accessed on 62ndAvenue just north of <strong>Osoyoos</strong> Secondary School. Parkingis available around <strong>the</strong> corner adjacent to <strong>the</strong> trail sign. Thewalkway can also be accessed from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Visitor</strong> Centre parkinglot. This trail follows an abandoned section of <strong>the</strong> irrigationcanal, once <strong>the</strong> lifeline of <strong>Osoyoos</strong> that opened up <strong>the</strong> area for<strong>the</strong> fruit industry. Flat with hard surfaces, ideal for easy strollsand strollers.Haynes Point Wetlands Trail:Located within Haynes Point Provincial Park, this easy 1.5kilometer gravel trail is designed for bird watchers and o<strong>the</strong>rnature lovers. Pathways, a spotting tower, boardwalks andinterpretive signs will heighten appreciation for this preciouswetlands area.International Bike and Hike Trail:Located at <strong>the</strong> north end of Lake <strong>Osoyoos</strong> and runningparallel to <strong>the</strong> Okanagan River channel, this 18.4 kilometertrail is perfect for biking between wineries, fruit stands andfarms. The parking lot is accessed on Road 22 off Highway 97eight kilometers north of <strong>Osoyoos</strong>.Lake <strong>Osoyoos</strong> Oxbows:Recenty restored, <strong>the</strong> oxbows at <strong>the</strong> north end of Lake<strong>Osoyoos</strong> are ideal for watching both migratory and residentbirds. Access at <strong>the</strong> same parking area as for <strong>the</strong> InternationalHiking and Biking Trail but head south instead of north.Located next to and as part of <strong>the</strong> Haynes Lease EcologicalReserve.Mount Kobau Trail Network:The five kilometer Testalinden Trail has outstanding <strong>view</strong>s of<strong>the</strong> Similkameen and Okanagan Valleys. Access via Highway3 approximately 11 kilometers west of <strong>Osoyoos</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n 11kilometers along <strong>the</strong> gravel/dirt access road (not suitable forlow clearance vehicles) which takes you within one kilometerof Mt. Kobau’s summit. Follow <strong>the</strong> trail to <strong>the</strong> forestry lookoutfor a great <strong>view</strong> of <strong>the</strong> valleys and mountains.<strong>Osoyoos</strong> Desert Centre:The <strong>Osoyoos</strong> Desert Centre is located just off Highway97, three kilometers north of <strong>Osoyoos</strong> at 146th Avenue.Take a guided tour in this rare environment complete withinterpretive kiosks and exhibitions.NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre:Located on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast side of <strong>Osoyoos</strong>, explore <strong>the</strong> Syilxcultural heritage and beautiful desert landscapes. WELCOME TO OSOYOOS 2013 Official <strong>Visitor</strong>’s <strong>Guide</strong>Call of <strong>the</strong> OkanaganValleyFur, gold, farming and ranchingattracted new people to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Osoyoos</strong>region. The first recorded whiteexplorer and fur trader came to <strong>the</strong> areain 1811 with <strong>the</strong> Pacific Fur Company,following a trail north from FortOkanogan, in what is now WashingtonState. The Hudson’s Bay Company tookover <strong>the</strong> lucrative fur trade and <strong>the</strong>trail in 1821. Known as <strong>the</strong> Fur BrigadeTrail, HBC utilized <strong>the</strong> route from <strong>the</strong>Okanagan Valley to Fort Kamloops andpoints north until 1846.The discovery of gold 30 mileseast of <strong>Osoyoos</strong> at Rock Creek in1859 brought <strong>the</strong> next onslaught ofAmerican pioneers, turning <strong>the</strong> areainto a major crossroads. Progresscontinued with <strong>the</strong> establishment ofa Customs Port of Entry in 1860 andconstruction of a Customs Building in1862. The Dewdney Trail, completed toRock Creek in 1861, is now Highway 3.A government building of heavy logsconsisting of living quarters and anannex for two jail cells, constructed in1892, now serves as <strong>the</strong> main room of<strong>the</strong> local museum.The next boon came from cattle ranchesset up to feed nearby mining campsand communities. A new opportunitypresented itself when an engineerplanted 12 hectares of peaches,cherries, pears, plums, apricots andapples in 1907. This was <strong>the</strong> start ofcommercial fruit growing, whichcontinues to typify <strong>the</strong> area today.
